Thomas Jefferson High School senior, Ashley Guidone, named Grebb’s Summer League MVP, Ashley Guidone recently committed to continue her basketball career by playing for Chatham University. The 5’5” Guard announced her decision on Twitter.

Although Guidone is missing her senior basketball season due to a torn hip labrum, she was still recruited by several Division II and III programs such as Hiram, SUNY Fredonia, Saint Vincent and Grove City. She was very pleased to receive an offer from Carlow University. Guidone is a High Honors student who enjoys volunteer coaching and giving back to her community. She plans on studying Exercise Science and looks forward to getting started with the Chatham Cougars.

Registrations forms for the Ninth Annual Art Show, hosted by the Friends of Clairton Library, are now available at the Clairton Library. Local artists are invited to enter their work. Paintings, photographs, fabric art, sculpture, and work in other media are all eligible for display. Registration forms must be received by April 3, 2020. All work, matted and framed (or otherwise ready for display, should be taken to the library by April 16. The Reception for Artists will be held on April 22, and artwork may be viewed by the public on April 23 and 24.

Breakfast With the Easter Bunny in Elizabeth, April 4 RESN Parents Wish to Properly Acknowledge School District Police Officer Dear Editor, The February 2020 edition of the South Hills-Mon Valley Messenger contained an article about the Law Enforcement Appreciation Day event held at Ringgold Elementary School North. The police departments and officers present were recognized. However, Officer Rob Vitalbo was identified as RESN Security from Ringgold School Security. I would like to clarify and give the proper recognition. The Ringgold School District Police Department is a state recognized police department and it utilizes sworn officers that carry weapons and have extensive training including active shooter/violent intruder training. Officer Vitalbo previously served in the Donora Borough Police Department. We are very fortunate and grateful to have this level of protection at our schools. We appreciate Officer Vitalbo not only as a professional but as a role model and resource for the students.

South Hills Children’s Choir to Host ‘Bridges of Song’ Youth Community Sing Experience choir for a day with high quality instruction, superior choirs, good food, and new friends.

The South Hills Children's Choir (SHCC) will host the annual “Bridges of Song” with teaching artist Dr. Joy Hirokawa, director of the Bel Canto Youth Choir.

Joined by the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus, Pittsburgh Girls Choir, and Giovani Voci, SHCC shares a day of choral singing and camaraderie open to all local youth. This event takes place on March 21, 2020 from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Peters Township.

This event is meant to build bridges of understanding through friendship and the richness of a choir community. Constant interface with technology erodes societal relationships; singing develops them. Journalist Cassandra Sheppard notes “that singing in groups triggers the communal release of serotonin and oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and even synchronizes our heart beats. Group singing literally incentivized community over an 'each cave dweller for themselves' approach. Those who sang together were strongly bonded. . .”

A healthy lunch will be provided by Heisler’s Market, Trader Joes, Eat N Park, Starbucks- McMurray, Chick fil A, and local bakeries. The day concludes with a free performance conducted by Dr. Hirokawa. Choristers will learn ASL in “Can You Hear Me?” by Bob Chilcott, recount WWII memories in “Homeland” by Randall Stroope, and enjoy a new work by Dr. Hirokawa.

Bethel Art Guild Meeting to Host Inspirational Painter The Bethel Art Guild March meeting will be held on Thursday, March 5 at 12:30PM at the Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave., Bethel Park, PA. This month’s speaker is a local artist who grew up in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. David Wadsworth discovered his passion for painting in 2007, and he has been painting almost every day since. His paintings feature cityscapes and landscapes, many from the surrounding communities of Pittsburgh. He uses bold contrasts and simplification with his impressionistic style of oil painting. His art is also influenced and inspired by his full-time job.

David works at a local ministry for those seeking recovery from homelessness and addiction. Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency Announces $99,657 in Tourism Investments Washington County Pennsylvania, which is home to some of the country’s finest historical and cultural attractions, continues to lead the southwestern Pennsylvania region in both economic and tourism growth.

To demonstrate this growth and tourism’s impact on economic development, the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency announced $99,657 in new tourism investments today. The Agency was joined by the Washington County Commissioners and representatives of the county’s tourism attractions at an event held at The Spring House, in Washington.

Jeff Kotula, President of the Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency, commented on the importance of tourism as a major economic driver in the county.

“Washington County’s economy is not only being driven by energy, education and advanced manufacturing, but by a strong tourism industry. Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation Helps Area First Responders 2020 Events and Fundraisers Announced The Monongahela Area Revitalization Corporation (MARC), a 501c(3), is a Community Development Corporation (CDC) comprised of volunteers interested in the sustained development of the Greater Monongahela Area: Monongahela, New Eagle, and Carroll Township.

MARC has recently donated money to the Monongahela Volunteer Fire Department, New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department, Carroll Township Volunteer Fire Department, Valley Inn Volunteer Fire Department and the TriCommunity Ambulance Service.

“Our First Responders are a valued service in our communities,” stated George I. Eckert, The President of MARC, who has just started his fourth year as the head of the organization.

“Many times, our First Responders are overlooked for what they do for our citizens. It takes a large cash flow to keep equipment up to current standards for these organizations to function properly not to mention the continuing education needed to keep certifications updated.”

sizes, trekking the business district of Monongahela from Second Street to Chess Park. The Monongahela Animal Hospital hosted a Rabies Clinic in New Eagle last fall and generously donated all proceeds to this year’s “Pooch Parade” Planning is underway for the 2020 “On Your MARC 5K Run/Walk.”

Last year’s highly successful event was held on the Saturday of the Monongahela 250th. A date for this year’s event will be posted soon.

“Movies in the Mounds” will return for a second consecutive year.

The Bronco Field at Memorial Park on Mound Street will be the site of yet to be selected movies. Free to the public, the films will be shown on the third Friday of June, July, and August and will begin at dusk.

In September, MARC will hold its “Annual Town Hall Meeting” sponsored by EQT. Topics will be released in July. The event will be held at the Monongahela Fire Hall.

October and December will bring on the Fall Harvest and Christmas Season decorating contests. These events have been growing in popularity the past few years with greater community participation throughout the MARC area.

MARC meetings are held the third Monday of the month and are open to the public. The meetings begin at 6:30 PM and are held at the Monongahela Fire Hall.

South Park Democratic Committee to Meet Changes to PA Voting Permit Mail-in Ballots, No Straight Party Voting The next South Park Democratic Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, at 7:30 PM in the South Park Township Community Room. It is open to the public and to all voters.

Last year, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed into law that Pennsylvania voters have the option of casting their ballots by mail without having to provide a reason.

Which means South Park voters can now apply for a mail-in ballot for the April 28 primary at www.pavoterservices.pa.gov for an online absentee ballot or a mail-in ballot. Instead of going to their polling place on election day, voters can apply for a mailin ballot if they don't qualify for an absentee ballot.

People who want to apply online must provide a driver's license number or a PennDOT ID number.

Anyone without those I.D. numbers must download a paper application and mail it to their county election office. The deadline for county election offices to receive applications for

mail-in ballots is 5:00 p.m. April 21.

Voters will get a ballot in the mail to complete and return to their county election office by 8:00 p.m. on election day.

The online application also allows mail-in voters to request that their county election office add them to an annual mail-in voter ballot request list. Their ballot application will then be automatically mailed to them each year.

Also new this year, Straight Party voting will no longer be available on the ballots. Voters will now have to vote for each candidate, meaning you cannot check one box. And, if you want to register to vote or change your registration you can easily do it at www.pavoterservices.pa.gov.

Learn how “lipstick’” helped to win World War II during a fashion tea as part of the “We Can Do It! WWII” traveling exhibit on Saturday, March 14, at 1:00 p.m. when Debbie Popp Gilbert visits from the Elizabeth Township Historical Society to present "WWII Fashions on the Home Front and Frontlines," along with a fashion tea – a joint effort by the Donora and Elizabeth Township Historical Societies. Gilbert will present displays of vintage clothing from their collection in Donora Library’s lower level Community Room in the midst of the WWII Exhibit located at 510 Meldon Avenue. Photos will also illustrate the impact that slogans like “We can do it” as well as “Make do and mend” and “Victory in the kitchen” had on the fashion icons, as well as women on the home front and frontlines.

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts Cuts Ribbon on New Digs Mon Valley Academy for the Arts Inc. (MVAA) is taking its mission to the next level as it officially opens doors on its first administrative office, studio and music store.

The four-year-old nonprofit's newly renovated space is located at the former Montgomery Ward department store at 309 5th St., in downtown Charleroi. In the past year, MVAA has secured nearly $60,000 in grants and private donations to advance its mission to develMark A. Local People News South Park Scout Troop 510 Honors Two Eagle Scouts Michael Alexander Bradley and Sam Jess of Scout Troop 510 in South Park, were recognized for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in Court of Honor ceremonies held on Saturday December 28 at New Day Assembly of God in Upper St. Clair, and on Saturday January 4 at St. Joan of Arc. Church in South Park. Michael is Sam Jess the son of Barb and Todd Bradley, and Sam is the son of Pat and Tom Jess.

The final hurdle in the quest for this highest rank for Boy Scouting is a community service challenge, titled “Eagle Project”.

The candidate for Eagle must be in charge of all aspects of the project. The tasks include but are not limited to; planning, financing, implementaMichael Alexander Bradley tion, completion and final presentation of the completed project to a committee of Boy Scout leaders.

Michael’s Eagle project consisted of taking down a play set at the church, leveling the ground and putting up a new play set for the children at his church, New Day Assembly of God. Sam’s Eagle project involved constructing a multi-stage compost bin for the garden at St. Joan of Arc Church. The garden is part of the South Hills Interfaith Ministry where crops are donated to the food bank.

The new Eagle Scouts received many letters of recognition from National, State and local dignitaries. Russ Spicuzza, Elk Scouting Representative, of South Hills B.P.O.E. Lodge 2213 in Bethel Park gave a short congratulatory talk and presented the new Eagle Scouts with two framed Certificates of Merit, one each from the Local and National Elks Lodge (Chicago).

Finleyville Resident Wins Grand Prize in Local Newspaper Contest

Lori Shoemaker of Finleyville was the grand prize winner of the South Hills – Mon Valley Messenger’s weekly “Crunch Time” Football contest.

Shoemaker received a brand new 55” flat screen HDTV and a new recliner.

Her name was selected at a random drawing from all the weekly winners who participated in the contest that was held throughout the NFL regular season.

“The armed services have a longstanding tradition of celebrating the promotion of its members in a formal ceremony, and with friends and family able to attend, this is no different,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jesse Maund, a fellow graduate of Yough Senior High and current Team Leader with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard’s recruiting & retention battalion.

Maund served as the master of ceremonies. Prah was commissioned as a second lieutenant of infantry in 2006 from California University of Pennsylvania. Benning, Ga., and is currently enrolled in the command & general staff college through Ft. Leavenworth, KS (TASS).

“Today is a special day for the Army, Rob’s family and his community,” said Lt. Col. Kevin Kropf, organizational integrator-maintenance, G37, Pentagon. “When we think about promoting a captain to major, that is a pretty big deal. As a field grade officer, there is a significant increase in responsibility and decision-making.

Rob is now second-in-charge of more than 500 Soldiers in his battalion.

Rob has clearly demonstrated the abilities to perform at the next higher grade and performed quite admirably throughout his service,” he said.

The event was hosted by Lt. Col. Kevin Kropf, Prah’s close friend and comrade from his deployment to Iraq.

Retired Army Maj. (Ret.), Dr. Michael Hummel served as Maj. Prah’s guest speaker.

Prah said he wanted to focus on two terms most often glossed over in other ceremonies — trust and resiliency. “I have been more than fortunate to surround myself around hard-working, trustworthy and extremely resilient Soldiers in my nearly 19-year career. As a company commander and senior staff officer at the battalion and brigade levels, you must be able to trust your Soldiers will do the right thing and work together as a team. My strong relationship with seniors, peers and all the Soldiers I have served with has helped me in my career. We have to work together to accomplish the mission. There is no alternative,” Prah said.

“The support from my wife, daughter and parents has been remarkable. Serving as a citizenSoldier, a dual-military couple and taking care of Soldiers takes a lot of dedication,” he said. “Achieving this promotion to Major is truly humbling.”Prah was pinned by his wife Capt. Hoods Up Quick Lube Opens in Carroll Township

Giant Oaks Winery has opened a tasting room at 3540 Washington Avenue located in the heart of Finleyville. They welcomed their first official guests at their Grand Opening that was held on Saturday, February 8, 2020.

The tasting room is a new venture for owners Lou and Linda Siyufy who are Peters Township residents. What started as a hobby more than a decade ago turned into a lifelong passion with thousands of bottles of wine produced each year. Wines featured at the tasting room are produced with grapes from California, Chile, Pennsylvania and Washington state and include a selection of semi-sweet white wines and dry reds. In addition to Giant Oak’s wines, Pennsylvania crafted spirits and beers are also available. A small plates menu offers a selection of cheese and fruit trays, charcuterie boards, hummus plates and hot dips.

The Siyufys are currently remodeling a second location within their building to host private tastings. The room will also be available for rental for events/parties for up to 60 people.

Regular business hours for the tasting room will be Thursdays and Fridays from 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM, Saturdays from 12 noon – 10:00 PM, and Sundays from 12 noon – 8:00 PM. Private parties may be scheduled on off-business days.

Hoods Up Quick Lube has opened a new location in Carroll Township.

New owner Gary Koteles, a resident of the Mon Valley, has been in the Quick Lube business since the age of seventeen. He managed his first store at the age of twenty one and became a district manager at the age of thirty. Koteles had inquired in the past with the Bartolotta family about purchasing the former Duke of Oil, located in the parking lot at Fisher The Koteles Family Invite you to visit their Heights (Giant Eagle) in business ‘Hoods Up’.

However – Camera Bartolotta instead asked Koteles to manage the store, which he has for the past thirteen years. Finally, on February 12, 2020 he was able to successfully purchase the Duke of Oil and officially changed its name to Hoods Up Quick Lube.

Koteles’ family is also involved in the Quick Lube business. His son, Cody Koteles, operates the Belle Vernon Hoods Up Quick Lube location at 1640 Broad Ave, in Belle Vernon, which opened in August 2017. Son, Jonathan Koteles, a high school senior, works for them, also.

Both the Carroll Township and Belle Vernon Hoods Up Quick Lube locations offer no appointment oil changes, tire rotation, air filters, cabin air filters, wiper blades, and light bulbs. They also offer State Inspections, emission testing, and most auto repairs.

Protect Yourself From Social Security Scams Calls and e-mails from scammers pretending to be government employees are widespread. Social Security phone scams are the #1 scam reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Chances are you, a friend, or a family member have received a call like this.

You don’t have to be receiving benefits to become a victim. You may get a call saying there is a problem with your Social Security number or account. Everyone, regardless of age, income, and geography, is at risk.

Scammers will try to scare and trick you into giving them your personal information or money.

Is It A Scam?

The best way to protect yourself and your money is to recognize a scam. Scammers use intimidating language and often offer a “solution” to fix what they say is a serious problem with your Social Security number or account. How can you tell when it’s a scam? Social Security will not: • Say your Social Security number has been suspended.

• Promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information.

• Call to demand an immediate payment.

• Insist you pay a debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe.

• Require payment by retail gift card, pre-paid debit card, Internet currency, wire transfer, or by mailing cash.

• Ask for your personal information.

Scammers prey on your fears. The stories they tell you would scare anyone. No matter how horrible the story, if they do anything above, it’s a scam.

What Should You Do? If you receive a suspicious call, the safest thing for you to do is: 1. Hang up!

2. Don’t share personal information or make a payment.

If you get a threatening call from someone saying they are from Social Security, it is from a scammer.

3. Report the scam to the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov.

And, if you receive such threats via e-mail, delete the e-mail and do not click on any links or download any attachments. Even if the e-mail or an attachment contains Social Security’s seal or names of real people, ignore it.

Then, report the scam.

Other Tips How about if Social Security needs to contact you? Generally, they will mail you a letter and only contact you by phone if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with them.

Usually, Social Security will mail you a letter that contains telephone numbers for contacting them. You can also contact Social Security by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting SSA.gov.

Scammers are always looking for the next way to trick someone. No matter how someone might try to scam you, learning the warning signs shared here can go a long way to protecting yourself and someone you care about from identify theft and financial loss.

If you think you have been scammed, don’t be embarrassed.

Report the scam to Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov and share this important information with your family and friends.

Seniors for Safe Driving Classes ‘Seniors for Safe Driving’ presents highway safety education programs for Seniors 55 years of age and older. The programs are certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The successful completion of the program makes senior drivers eligible for a 5% discount on their automobile insurance premiums, across the board, for a period of three years. Receiving this discount is mandated by Pennsylvania State Law. Mature driver improvement course helps drivers understand how aging affects abilities and provides insight about driving on today’s roadways. Free Tax Help Available at Community Centers in Western PA Staff from the Department of Revenue will also be available to assist with applications for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

Representatives from the Department of Revenue will visit senior and community centers over the next month to help Pennsylvanians who need help filing their Pennsylvania personal income tax returns and Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program applications.

“We know from our experience that many times our taxpayers and applicants for the Property Tax Rent/Rebate Program benefit from having a face-to-face conversation with someone who can help guide them through the filing process,” Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell said. “We hope that Pennsylvanians will take advantage of the opportunity to receive free help from our staff in person.” Department of Revenue staff will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the locations listed below. What Should You Bring With You? Taxpayers who need assistance with the Pennsylvania personal income tax return (PA-40) should bring their tax information/income statements and a photo identification card (driver’s license, etc.) or Social Security card for themselves and their dependents. As a reminder, all taxpayers who received more than $33 in total gross taxable income in calendar year 2019 must file a Pennsylvania personal income tax return by midnight, Wednesday, April 15, 2020.

Applicants who need assistance with the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program application (PA-1000) should check the eligibility guidelines and obtain an application by visiting the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program page on the Department of Revenue website. Additionally, PA-1000 applications and instruction booklets, which include information on the documentation that you’ll need for your application, are available at Department of Revenue district offices, local Area Agencies on Aging, senior centers and state legislators’ offices.

Protecting Your Ability To Drive Safely For As Long As Possible (NAPSI)—Driving a car means maintaining independence for many older adults. Driving allows you to shop, see friends and family, keep up with medical appointments, and avoid social isolation. But sometimes staying safe behind the wheel as you age can be a challenge.

Age-related physical and mental changes can affect your ability to drive safely. If you’re alert to these changes and manage them carefully, you may be able to continue driving safely for some time.

To keep your skills as sharp as possible, consider following these suggestions from experts at the American Geriatrics Society (AGS), healthcare professionals dedicated to improving the health, independence, and quality of life of older people: CHECK YOUR EYESIGHT TO KEEP IT AS SHARP AS POSSIBLE BY GETTING A COMPLETE ANNUAL EYE

EXAM ONCE YOU TURN 60.

TEST YOURSELF TO MONITOR YOUR VISION: • Do you have problems reading street signs?

• Are you having difficulty seeing road or pavement markings, curbs, or other vehicles or pedestrians, especially at dawn, dusk, and nighttime?

• Is glare from oncoming headlights making it hard to see when driving at night?

Assess your physical fitness to drive by asking yourself: • Can I comfortably turn my neck to see over my shoulder when I change lanes?

Rostraver Township Has a Separate Storm Sewer System As an ‘MS4’ Community, Residents Encouraged to be Mindful of Water Pollutants What is an MS4 community? MS4 stands for Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) program. It is a program regulated by the EPA and DEP. What does this mean for you as a resident of Rostraver Township? Stormwater is the precipitation that flows across the land including anything from the natural ground to the runoff water that goes over hard surfaces such as your roof or driveway. Rain or snowmelt that falls on a roof, driveway, or patio pick up pollutants as it goes. Those pollutants flow into streams or storm drains that empty into our waterways like the Monongahela and Youghiogheny River. You can do your part by being mindful of what you put into the water and reduce the number of pollutants that need to be filtered.

Here are some simple things we can all do to make a difference: • Wash your car on grass or gravel instead of in the street on in your driveway. All the soap, scum, and oil residue run along the curb and into a storm drain where it ends up in streams.

• When you fertilize your lawn, avoid fertilizing it the day before a rainstorm to avoid fertilizer chemicals being carried into the local streams and rivers.

• Do not direct grass clippings or raked leaves into a storm drain or stream.

• Other small things you can do include making sure your trash is securely tied; shoveling the snow before salting; and storing chemicals in waterproof containers.

These small acts can make a huge impact for the safety and cleanliness of our community’s water as stormwater pollution is the primary source for water pollution. YOUR HEALTH Monongahela Valley Hospital Offers Free Colorectal Cancer Education and Screening Program Monongahela Valley Hospital will offer a free colorectal cancer education and screening program on Wednesday, March 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the hospital’s Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center. The event is free, but seating is limited; preregistration is required by calling 724-258-1333. A free take-home immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood test will be given to all participants.A panel of health care professionals, including Andrew Zahalsky, M.D., director of Medical Oncology at MVH; Arshad Bachelani, M.D., gastrointestinal surgeon, and Kristen Begonia, clinical dietician, will provide information on treatments for and prevention of colorectal cancer.

The American Cancer Society recommends men and women should begin testing for colorectal cancer at age 50. Early detection leads to easier treatment and improved survival. Treatment options are available, even for patients with a more advanced stage of the disease and for older patients.

Monongahela Valley Hospital Welcomes New Physician to Primary Care Practice in Finleyville Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH), along with Mon-Vale Primary Care Practices, Inc. welcomes Thomas Sisk, M.D., to the mid-Mon Valley region. Dr. Sisk is board certified in family medicine with a certificate of added qualification in primary care sports medicine. He received his medical degree from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, performed his residency at Christiana Care Family Medicine in Wilmington, DE and completed a fellowship in Dr. Thomas Sisk sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Primary Care Sports Medicine. MVH Offers a Multiphasic Health Screening Monongahela Valley Hospital will hold a Multiphasic Health Screening on Saturday, March 21, from 7 to 10 a.m. in the Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center on the hospital campus. The multiphasic blood analysis is open to the public with a cost of $30 per person. In addition to the blood analysis, a mammogram screening and colorectal take-home kits will be available.

From one small blood sample, 36 individual tests will be performed that can detect diseases of the heart, liver, kidneys and circulatory system. At no additional cost, the screening will also include a full lipid profile. Additional blood tests are not included in the analysis, but can be added for a cost. These screenings and additional blood tests will also be available for an additional fee: • Immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood take-home test • 3-D mammogram (insurance card required) • Hemoglobin A1C (blood test for diabetes) • Thyroid stimulating hormone

• Prostatic specific antigen • Vitamin D Participants will be asked to provide insurance information and identification for a prescribed A1C test or mammogram. When registering, participants will be asked to provide the full name and complete address of the physician to whom their test results will be sent. A 12-hour fasting period is required prior to testing. Persons on medication should consult their physicians. Certified medical professionals from the MVH laboratory and medical imaging will administer the testing. The procedure takes between 15 and 20 minutes; allow added time if scheduling a mammogram.

Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Parking is free for participants.

There were over 150 entries of crafts, paintings, string art, drawings and more. Students in grades Pre-K through 4th grades earned awards for overall artistic ability, best storytelling through art, outstanding builder, and most creative art piece.

Local Graphic Designer Julianne Eisel and Kristen Cowen, Design Assistant, Brookside Lumber, donated their time to judge the entries.

Other donations included: The Pie Place, The Y, Studio Make, Children’s Museum Pittsburgh and Museum Lab, Savarino Studio Just some of the RESN student subPhotography, Dana Monticelli, Fox missions on display at the Art fair. in Box by Silvi, Deborah Mainwaring Studio. The Art Show sponsors were Brookside Lumber, Lilliput Play Homes, and Eat’n Park. Special donations were created and given by two RESN staff, Ms. Rebecca Galanko, aide, and Mr. Earl Gilpin, Art Teacher.

The Art Fair took wrapped up with Parent & Awards Night on Thursday, January 30 with attendance of approximately 200!

Monessen/Rostraver Rotary Recognizes Students of the Month On February 18, the Monessen/ Rostraver Rotary recognized four students from the School District of the City of Monessen for their academic achievements and extracurricular activities.

The students included seniors Cammi Kovach and Zane Lakin. The eighth grade students were Sidney Campbell and Matthew Sawa. The middle school and high school students attended the Rotary’s weekly meeting to accept their certificates and pens.

During the meeting, each student briefly discussed his or her extracurricular activities and career goals with the Rotarians.

Cal U Announces Spring Open House Dates California University of Pennsylvania has scheduled three open house programs this spring.

Open house programs begin with an academic experience day on Monday, Feb. 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. beginning at the Convocation Center.

Other open house events will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21, and Saturday, April 18. Registration for both events will be on the third floor of the Natali Student Center.

At an open house, prospective students can meet faculty and current students, take a campus tour, learn about our clubs and organizations and more.

During the academic experience day on Feb. 17, visiting students will have an opportunity to sit in on classes taught by Cal U faculty members.

Campus tours will include the residence halls, classrooms and academic departments, and facilities such as the Herron Recreation and Fitness Center and the Convocation Center. Students and families can talk with Cal U students, meet faculty members, and learn about financial aid options. All students receive a free Cal U T-shirt at the end of the day.

"Weeping Icon" at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Monongahela A weeping icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 6th Street, Monongahela on Friday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m. The icon, from St. George Orthodox Church in Taylor, (Lackawanna County) Pa. has been oozing large amounts of fragrant oil continually for the past eight years.

The phenomenon has been witnessed by numerous Orthodox archbishops, bishops, and clergy of many Christian denominations. A service of prayer will begin at 7 p.m. Following the service, Father Mark Leasure, custodian of the icon, will share many of the stories associated with the icon.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church Celebrates Rev. Dr. Gary L. Hughes’ First Pastoral Anniversary Rev. Dr. Gary L. Hughes celebrated his first Pastoral Anniversary as Senior Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Rev_Gary_Hughes.

Rev. Dr. Hughes was elected as Senior Pastor in November 2018, and was installed as Senior Pastor in February 2019. During his first year as pastor-elect, Rev. Dr. Hughes has become acquainted

with the Mt. Zion members, the community of South Park, and church membership has increased.

Rev. Dr. Hughes, a native of Pittsburgh, accepted his call to the ministry in 1997. For 11 years, he served as Associate Minister at Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. William H. Curtis, Senior Pastor at Mount Ararat Baptist Church. Rev. Dr. Curtis was the preacher for the afternoon worship service on Feb. 23. The community choir comprised of singers from South Park, Bethel Park, Finleyville and surrounding areas rendered the music.
