Oliver Miller Homestead Hosts Frontier Thanksgiving

A

n 18th-century time of visiting and thanksgiving for the harvest will be observed at the Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park on Sunday, November 18, from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. Long before President Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday, it was common for the frontier people to gather sometime after the harvest to give thanks and visit before winter set in. The “Miller family and their friends (volunteers dressed in period attire) will prepare and display foods common to the times. At 2:30 p.m. guests are invited to meet at the Log House to learn about a typical church service of the late 18th century. The “Rev. John Macmillan, an eighteenth century minister, will be present with Biblical readings and a portion of an actual sermon of his from 1780. Historic crafts such as spinning, weaving, quilting, and blacksmith work will be demonstrated. Tours of the Stone House, Log House, springhouse, forge, and barn will be given throughout the afternoon. The Oliver Miller Homestead is open every Sunday through December 9 from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. An admission of $2 is requested. nyone looking for a natural, non-commercial holiday experience will find it when the greening of the Wright House Museum of Western Expansion occurs for its popular sixth annual “Candlelight Soup and Stroll event on Sunday, December 2 from 12:30 - 5:30 p.m., a labor of love for area families presented by Peters Creek Historical Society. Visitors will spend Christmas in the 1800s, entering by candlelit walkways, peeking into the decorated old sleigh, then stepping into the 1816 Wright House bedecked in beautiful 19th century style natural Christmas decorations. They will dine by candlelight and live music on a variety of homemade soups, breads and desserts in one of several of the museum’s “greened display rooms. This year, a visit to the 1780s log house is the showcase of the event, but guests will find an abundance of activities to enjoy. Takeout food will also be available. Admission tickets available at the door only. The Wright House Museum of Western Expansion is located at 815 Venetia Road. Handicapped parking is available.
