One of the great benefits of being a younger university is that we can look at things with fresh eyes and change them for the better. Traditionally, most universities take the same approach to class-based learning; in the first year you’re likely to be taught in large lecture classes; in subsequent years your classes are likely to be smaller, but only because they become more specialist – fewer students taking the class. This approach suits universities more than it suits students. Our approach to learning is different. We’re here to help you succeed, so we work closely with you from the very beginning of your first year, giving you the time and attention to help you develop into a confident and independent learner. At Suffolk, we talk about ‘guided learning’ in year one, characterised by learning in smaller groups, allowing you to build a solid foundation of academic skills.

By year three, you’ll be equipped for ‘independent learning’. You’ll have access to expert support relating to your specialist interests, and you’ll be learning by undertaking personal projects and research, peer-group activities and independent work. Throughout your degree, you will develop employability skills with a particular focus on professional development in your final year to prepare you for life after university.

Your undergraduate experience

Our diverse student body will also give you the opportunity to learn more about different cultures, beliefs and philosophies. By becoming involved in clubs and societies, you will find others who share your passions, whether they are sporting, educational or social.

Your learning experience is supported by our very simple philosophy of assessment: every assessment (whether it’s an exam, an essay, or something much less traditional) does not just test your progress, it is part of your learning process. Key to your progress is the quality of the feedback we give you. We make sure our feedback is regular and timely, whether this is face-to-face or written. Our approach to learning, assessment and feedback will provide you with the tools to change, evolve, succeed and change again.

Year two is focused on ‘negotiated learning’. This is learning that helps you to become more self-directed and reflective. You’ll be focusing on problem-based learning and various forms of collaborative work.

Suffolk has some of the UK’s finest coastline, nature reserves, rivers and forests. The cycle tracks, paths and boat hire make it easy to explore the landscape that inspired famous artists Constable and Gainsborough. Paddle board on Alton Water or visit Orwell Country Park or Rendlesham Forest for some peace and inspiration.

Being from London I find the location very ideal as it is only an hour on the train from Stratford. Be ready for serene architecture and waterfront views, as well as lively nights out in town.

Try the local beer with Adnams, Aspall, Calvors, Mauldons and St Peter’s, just a few of the regional breweries, great to fuel a long walk and give you a true taste of Suffolk with many using local ingredients like Suffolk malt. Or maybe have a cocktail on the Waterfront and watch the boats go by?

Our Honorary Doctorate Ed Sheeran Ed Sheeran happens to be one of our Honorary Graduates. His hit single ‘Castle on the Hill’ describes his love of the county, visit his hometown of Framlingham and see where he shot the music video.

Be independent and explore Throughout the county you will find many towns all with their own unique characteristics and history, packed with an eclectic mix of independent shops, eateries and local artisans, there is plenty to explore. You might want to start with The Saints, a quirky and interesting thoroughfare in Ipswich town centre, visit Ipswich Museum, stretch out on a climbing wall or challenge yourself in an escape room.

Our location

If you want student life without the expense, you will love the convenience and location of the University of Suffolk. The University is located on the stunning Ipswich Waterfront, home to a lively restaurant and bar scene popular with students and offering entertainment from sailing opportunities in the marina, to performances at DanceEast. The Waterfront also hosts the annual Maritime Festival attracting over 55,000 visitors.

Also, just a short walk away is Portman Road, the home of Ipswich Town Football Club and several parks all offering beautiful open spaces for picnics and exercise. The annual Ipswich Arts Festival hosts a series of events and exhibitions across the town and there is an exciting calendar of sporting events to get involved with, including the Great East Run.

Ipswich is the perfect choice for those seeking entertainment combined with peaceful, relaxed charm. The main campus in Ipswich is a ten-minute walk from the town centre which is packed with independent shops, restaurants, pubs, cafés, theatres and cinemas.

Ipswich is just over an hour away from London and has excellent road, rail and air links to the rest of the UK and overseas. There are also several hotels within easy walking distance, which may come in handy for visiting relatives!

The recommended on-campus halls of residence, Athena Hall, is located on the Ipswich Waterfront just 300 metres from the Waterfront Building and adjacent to the James Hehir Building. Local shops and amenities are close by and the town centre is just a ten minute walk away. Housing up to 590 students, Athena Hall offers a mixture of cluster flats and studio rooms; all with en-suite bathrooms.

Accredited off-campus accommodation includes purpose-built halls of residences and shared student houses of varying sizes; some properties will offer en-suite bathrooms whilst others have shared facilities. All properties are within easy walking distance of the campus, local shops and amenities. We recommend that you research the accommodation options available to you before booking a room. Partner colleges If you are studying at the University of Suffolk at Suffolk New College you can easily live in University of Suffolk student accommodation on or off-campus and be within walking distance of your study location. We may be able to advise about a limited amount of accredited accommodation around other partner college campuses, subject to availability. NEW DEVELOPMENTS Facilities and support

Health and Wellbeing Building The University of Suffolk will be opening its new Health and Wellbeing Building in early 2022, a space on campus dedicated to the promotion of integrated care among our student body, practice partners and the wider community. The new building will house two floors of brand-new clinical simulation facilities, featuring two state-of-the-art hospital wards, a midwifery

birthing unit, a new sports and exercise science facility, a working radiography imaging suite, counselling/physiotherapy clinic rooms and the Suffolk Institute of Health and Wellbeing Research. Students joining us in September 2022 will be among the first to have access to this brand-new facility.

DigiTech Centre

The Hold

The new DigiTech Centre opened in early 2021 and is a hub for digital research and training. The result of a collaboration between the University of Suffolk and BT, with £6.5m funding from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the Centre provides cutting-edge digital skills for people looking to pursue careers in the nationally important information and communications technology (ICT) sector and fuel high-tech businesses who increasingly require access to a talented technology workforce.

In partnership with Suffolk County Council, the University of Suffolk has developed The Hold, a purpose-built heritage research centre which opened in 2020. The Hold houses Suffolk’s exceptional historic masterpieces dating back to 1119 with a Royal Charter of King Henry I.

The DigiTech Centre is based at Adastral Park and supports the delivery of the ICT and Digital Creative courses offered by the University of Suffolk. Specialist high-tech laboratories will form the heart of the new Centre which is used jointly by University staff, students and businesses at Adastral Park and across the region.

The Hold supports research, teaching and public engagement, creating an environment for different disciplines to engage with the history of Suffolk. The £20m cutting-edge teaching spaces and public facilities are part of the University’s main campus in Ipswich and provide students with a contemporary new learning space in an immersive modern building to explore the memory bank of Suffolk.

LEARNING AND TEACHING The Library and Learning Services are at the heart of the academic journey, working in conjunction with course teams and other support services across the institution to ensure your time at Suffolk is as successful as possible. It is an adaptive learning system allowing you to work at a flexible pace and break free from the one-size-fits-all learning model. Study support Our team of Academic Skills Advisers, Learning and Teaching Librarians and Digital Learning Designers deliver a range of workshops, both face-to-face and online, all targeted at developing key academic skills such as referencing, academic reading and critical writing. Individual support is available at our main campus in Ipswich and can be booked online with our team who will offer you advice and guidance on all aspects of academic work, including assignment help, maths and statistics, research skills and lots more. We also offer a wealth of support on our website with workshops and toolkits to help get you started on your academic journey.

Careers and employability Our Advisers are here to provide impartial advice and guidance to support you with your personal and professional development before and during your studies, and after you graduate. You will also have access to our online interactive career learning platform FutureMe.

Chaplaincy We are a multi-faith community and welcome students from a diverse range of backgrounds. Our multi-faith chaplaincy at our main campus in Ipswich is open to staff and students of all faiths and no faith.

Childcare If you have dependants, we can advise you of funding that may be available.

Support

Counselling We can provide independent, impartial and professional counselling at some of our campuses, or we can signpost you to the appropriate support services. Our counselling support is confidential and offers you the opportunity to explore topics such as exam anxiety, low mood, stress, relationships and personal issues.

Disability support We are here to support you if you have a disability, a mental health difficulty, or a specific learning need. We aim to create an environment that is accessible and inclusive for all students. We will work with you to ensure that appropriate individual support is in place and we can advise you on your eligibility for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). Your individual needs and support arrangements can be discussed before you start your course or at any time during your studies.

Financial support Our expert Advisers can advise you on financial support that may be available to you. We have partnered with Blackbullion, the e-learning platform equipping students with money skills for life to maximise student success.

Health and wellbeing We can provide guidance on how to register with a local GP, and how to access sexual health and wellbeing services. Maintaining good mental and physical health is important and we offer as much help as we can to support your life as a student.

International opportunities

Suffolk Life Mentors are experienced students who can offer information and support to help you with your transition to university. They also organise activities to help you to learn more about university life and meet new people. Student Life Advisers are here to make your transition to and journey through university as smooth as possible.

We offer a wide range of international opportunities, including our popular exchange programme. You can enrol onto a four-year programme with a sandwich year, enabling you to combine studying and working abroad as part of your university experience.

Our Exchange Programme includes over 20 partner universities in Europe, Canada and Australia, offering a unique opportunity for studying, working and volunteering abroad, equipping you with many new skills and enhancing your experience and employability.

40 Mature and part-time students

MATURE OR PART-TIME STUDENT STUDYING AS A

We recognise that there are many different reasons for wanting to study part-time, whether it’s to fit around your family commitments, boost your career prospects, or enable you to earn while you learn. Around a fifth of undergraduate students in the UK study part-time. It can offer a more flexible approach to learning, allowing you to complete your studies over a longer period. This is typically four and a half to nine years for an undergraduate degree, following the same structure as full-time students, but taking fewer modules per year. The number of modules per year depends on how long you wish to take to complete your course. If you want to study part-time, you must apply directly to the University. All applications are judged on their individual merits. The government offers maintenance loans to eligible students who wish to study part-time. These loans are meansassessed, and the rates are pro rata (must be a minimum of 25 percent equivalent of a full-time course to qualify). To get a maintenance loan you must also be under the age of 60 on the first day of the first academic year of your course. Ask the Infozone for more information.

These are targeted at supporting you to develop the key academic skills that assist you with your study. Our workshops focus on topics such as referencing, academic writing and reading, maths and statistics, understanding feedback and being critical. We also have a wealth of support available on our website including toolkits and workshops to get you started on your academic journey.

Mature and part-time students

Part-time study

Our Infozone Advisers are your first stop for guidance on finance and can direct you to Student Finance Advisers for support with more in-depth issues. As a mature student, you are eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan and may get a maintenance loan to help with living costs. Student Finance England offer a reduced rate means-assessed Special Support Loan for eligible students aged 60 or above commencing a full-time undergraduate first degree. Additional financial support may also be available in some cases. We operate a flexible admissions policy for mature students, giving consideration to life and work experience. Mature students A large proportion of our students are over the age of 21, so if you’re considering a return to study, you won’t be alone. We understand that the prospect of being a mature student can sometimes be daunting, so we put in place a range of support measures to help.

Library and Learning Services offer additional support to students at all levels of study and provide year-round workshops, drop-ins and one-to-one appointments.

If you are aged 21 or over, you are classed as a mature student. A large proportion of the student population at the University are mature students. The University and the Students’ Union run a programme of events aimed specifically at mature students.

The University of Suffolk seemed to me like the best for multiple reasons: the specialist equipment, it was a newer university and the student-to-tutor ratio meant that I would get more one-on-one time with the lecturers if I needed it.

INFOZONE The Infozone is a one-stop-shop, giving information and advice on all aspects of student life. Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre (IWIC) The Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre (IWIC), located in The Atrium, has been established as our focal point for developing new entrepreneurs and businesses, supporting student entrepreneurs, apprentices and alumni and connecting the University to industry. Through the IWIC you can receive support to create your own business, access internships and placements, connect with a large network of businesses and attend development skills workshops. Many of our alumni have gone on to set up their own business and come back to support new students with advice and mentoring. Your relationship with the University is for life and does not end when you complete your course.

The DigiTech Centre provides BT with a great opportunity to enhance our partnership with University of Suffolk. It opens the QUOTE doors for research collaborations in data science, cyber security and other technology areas that are key for BT and the UK.

Biscuit Sandwich Games was founded in 2019 by Tom Gibbs, Elliot Chester, Amy Potter and George Flude. The team was created to participate in the Tranzfuser Competition, where they entered the concept for their first game ‘Ready Set Sumo!’ The team were selected as one of the winning teams to receive funding of up to £25,000, enabling them to become a fully-fledged company and continue with the development of their game. “We’re thrilled our hard work has taken us this far. Being awarded funding will enable the team to continue development full-time and allow us access to the resources we need to meet our development milestones.” Tom Gibbs, Biscuit Sandwich Games.

Our 3D Productivity Suite has a range of 3D printers, including an industry-standard printer with the future-proofed capability to work with almost any plastic in applications across all disciplines. If you can dream it, you can build it, in a fraction of time and at a fraction of the cost of traditional manufacturing methods. These facilities are available to all students and staff regardless of their course and can support a range of interesting projects.

Suffolk Centre for Female Entrepreneurship The Suffolk Centre for Female Entrepreneurship launched in October 2017 as a key partner of the IWIC. The Centre is a unique resource regionally and nationally within UK Innovation Centres, aiming to provide a leadership role and knowledge base for the support and promotion of female entrepreneurship, innovation within business and a reduction in gender inequality across all business sectors. The Centre supports students and graduates to develop their entrepreneurial skills, empowering them to create, plan and manage their own businesses and inclusivity.

Professor Alistair Mathie joined the University in January 2021 from the University of Kent. Dr Paul Driscoll-Evans, Dean of School Dr Paul Driscoll-Evans is passionate about improving the patient experience and playing an active role in healthcare education. Professor Brian McCook, Dean of School Professor McCook is a social and cultural historian. As Dean, he has the privilege to lead an innovative and professional School with a strong interdisciplinary ethos dedicated to serving the needs of a diverse and vibrant student population. A PhD graduate from UC-Berkeley, he joined Suffolk in 2019 after previous academic leadership roles at Manchester Metropolitan and Leeds Beckett universities. Many of our courses lead to Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) awards, usually studied full-time over three years, or part-time, where available, over four and a half to nine years.

Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas are awarded by Pearson or the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

Foundation degrees

In addition to our undergraduate degree portfolio, we offer a range of postgraduate courses, including postgraduate taught degrees and postgraduate research degrees.

Foundation degrees are highly flexible programmes of study with a strong vocational focus. The Foundation degree in Arts (FdA) and Foundation degree in Science (FdSc) are generally available in both full and part-time study modes. They are normally studied full-time over two years or part-time, where available, over three years. Upon successful completion, you can gain an Honours degree by transferring on to the final year of a related Honours degree or complete a specific Progression Route year.

This degree brings together the disciplines of Accounting, Finance and Management (AFM). You will study a range of topics from Accounting and Banking to Audit and Taxation as well as Financial Strategy. Our BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing degree is an excellent choice if you want a fulfilling and rewarding career. You will be made to feel welcome from your first day by our friendly, enthusiastic and committed team of experts. The course is based in the School of Health and Sports Sciences and has the NHS Values and 6 C’s of nursing at its heart. We are committed to embedding these values in everything we do. You will study in a state-of-the-art learning environment with fifty per cent of your time in practice and fifty per cent in lectures, simulation laboratories and independent study. We work closely with hospital Trusts and the independent and charity sectors, to provide experience in clinical practice. Our practice partners offer a variety of opportunities in the following areas and specialities: community nursing; acute medical and surgical nursing; specialist care areas, including palliative and end of life care, and out-patient departments. Students in their third year are encouraged to arrange an elective placement which could be at home or abroad. Whilst in practice, you will be allocated a Practice Assessor responsible for your clinical assessments in conjunction with the Practice Supervisors with whom you will be working. The course is full-time, which equates to 37.5 hours per week. Practice placements comprise of a variety of shift patterns: long days (12.5 hours), early, late and night shifts. At times, you will also be expected to work weekends to ensure you encounter the range of experiences during a service user’s journey of care. Student nurses at the University of Suffolk develop into informed, enthusiastic, motivated and competent Registered Nurses, empowered to deliver the best possible care. I applied for University after leaving the military and used the ELCAS scheme as part of the funding. After running into some issues with this, I contacted the University Finance team to explain the situation and they went out of their way to get it resolved. Suffolk has excellent student satisfaction and high-quality course content. You are encouraged to engage, lectures are not a one-way information stream, you are in control of your own learning. With my course I am able to access the IT suites exclusive to students studying IT based subjects as they are pre-loaded with industry-leading software. My course is designed to be directly useful in industry today, utilising the technologies and techniques that are very likely to be needed in my first job after graduation. I currently work full-time in a job unrelated to my degree. It can be hard at times, but it’s achievable, and made easier by the support available from student services, like time management. As a mature student who commutes to university the location is excellent and there is plenty of parking available in and around the campus. The University is also within walking distance to the best bars and clubs. Always a positive! Think about what you want from university. If you want to be recognised as an individual and made to feel as though help is available at every turn, Suffolk is the place for you.

CHILDHOOD*

The BA (Hons) Childhood programme explores the well-established academic disciplines of Childhood, Education and Disability studies. The programme focuses on the multi-disciplinary nature of the study of childhood, which embraces diverse academic disciplines such as sociology, education, psychology, history, philosophy, social policy and health. This enables you to explore the diverse, multi-faceted experiences of children through a range of perspectives. Within the programme, a variety of discreet pathways are available, allowing you to acquire specific knowledge and understanding in specialised aspects of childhood and their associated career opportunities. The first year of the programme provides you with an introductory knowledge of childhood, child development, health and education. From the second year onwards, you can choose a specific pathway aligned with your interests and employability outcomes. These pathways are specifically named in the final degree award. Pathway 1: Disability, Special Needs, Health and Wellbeing: offers a grounding in human development from an ecological perspective; health, wellbeing; and disability, from both a bio-psycho-social perspective and the disability studies, rights-based approach. Pathway 2: Society and Welfare: examines welfare ideologies and the ways in which childhood is constructed within the social structures. It explores the welfare needs of children through local, national and international institutions. Pathway 3: Education: examines early and primary education and the underpinning values of professional practice. Practice modules are available within this pathway. You can work towards an optional Early Childhood Graduate Competencies certification, developed by the Early Childhood Studies Degrees Network (ECSDN) and supported by the Department for Education (DfE). The academic team draws on years of academic and professional expertise in childhood, education, child health, development and therapeutic working. Primary Education with QTS is a new and exciting opportunity for students wishing to become primary school teachers. The programme enables students to gain a BA Honours degree while working towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This programme is delivered in partnership with our ITT partners, North Essex Teacher Training and Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT. The course enables you to explore the diverse, multi-faceted experiences of children through a range of perspectives such as sociology, education, psychology, social policy and health, while also acquiring an in-depth understanding across several subject disciplines and clearly defined core curriculum specialisms. From year one, you will combine studying with practical classroom experience at partnered primary schools, allowing you to put your academic knowledge into practice on a continuous basis. The academic team draws on years of academic and professional expertise in teacher training, childhood, child health, development and therapeutic working. You will benefit from close working relationships with a highly qualified teaching team who will support you in your journey to becoming a primary teacher. This academically challenging route is designed especially for high performing, motivated students as it combines a full-time academic programme with school placements throughout each year of the course. CHILDREN’S NURSING

Children’s Nursing focuses upon the health and wellbeing of children and young people from infancy to adolescence, in hospital and community settings. Children’s nurses work in partnership with the child, young person and parents/carers to promote a flexible and holistic approach to their care. They also support and educate the child/young person and family in managing their health, illness and disability and work as part of the interprofessional team with other professionals from health care, social care and education. This course promotes NHS values and seeks to develop knowledge, skills and competence required to respond to health care needs. By the end of the course, you will have acquired in-depth knowledge of key subjects, including anatomy and physiology, physical emotional and psychosocial development, acute and long-term childhood illness and subsequent nursing care. Your time will be split, 50% in the classroom and clinical skills laboratories and 50% in clinical placement; demonstrating integration and consolidation of theory and practice. You will gain a wealth of experience in a wide range of clinical placements, for example a children’s ward, neonatal unit, children’s emergency department, a children’s hospice, a child’s home and in the community.

Our Counselling degree provides you with the theory and skills to become a practising therapist able to work from humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) approaches. This course uses an integrative philosophy to counselling that centres on the needs of the client. You will develop your own self-awareness and the ability to use your counselling skills to become a confident therapeutic practitioner. As part of the course you will complete a placement, which could include supporting those with addiction, depression, sexual or physical abuse, anxiety, bereavement and trauma. You will be equipped to work with people who are in difficult or distressing circumstances or are dealing with challenging life events. You will develop strategies for self-care that enable you to be robust and resilient. This course is structured to support future applications for registration and individual accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and subscribes to the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions 2018.

CRIMINOLOGY CRIMINOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY

Students studying criminology routes at Suffolk will be challenged to seek answers to fundamental questions such as: What is crime? Who are criminals? Are we all equal before the law? How do we prevent crime? Criminology is an academic discipline with strong roots in sociology, psychology, law, social policy and philosophy. It is a discipline with a number of lively and sometimes controversial debates and it is through engagement in debates that students gain the very important undergraduate skill of critical thinking. As well as studying criminology as a single route, students can also choose to study this discipline as a combined route with sociology or psychology (see page 126). Sociology is a subject that developed with the modern world and its key task is to analyse the changing nature of the social world. Responding to growth in demand for dance artists working in health, education and community settings, this innovative course will prepare you for a successful career and develop your artistic voice. It is delivered intensively over 40 weeks each year, from mid-September to the end of July, supporting continuous learning, training and professional exposure. DanceEast is one of the UK’s leading national dance organisations, hosting an eclectic selection of internationally renowned dance companies and choreographers and its reach extends far beyond work presented in the theatre. FRANKIE SHAFTAIN-FENNER BA (Hons) Digital Film Production I spent hours talking to one of the lecturers on an open day. It was refreshing to be able to talk openly with staff about their subject. One of the best parts of the course is collaborating with other students. Developing ideas and filming them as a group helps to bring everyone together. We have a dedicated computer suite, loaded with the latest industry standard software, including Avid, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve. With constant access to these facilities, we can sit and edit together all day.

I felt instantly at home when I came to the audition for my course, it felt less overwhelming than some larger universities. I enjoy the class sizes as it means I get lots of feedback and individual attention and the modules really prepare me for a variety of careers. I’ve had some great opportunities through this, from video editing to documentary work and promotional films! The people who run the student societies are really friendly and welcoming. DATA SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Many areas of our daily lives are influenced in one way or another by the use of Data Science, from the investigation of medical issues through to political campaigns, elections and social media technology. This degree course will provide you with the foundational computing skills necessary to begin exploring the exciting and topical world of Data Science, which is the collective term given to the tools, techniques and strategies used in trying to discover valuable information from (often enormous) datasets. The roots of Data Science lie in developments made in the field of Artificial Intelligence and this course will also give you an introduction to those foundations. Firstly you will need to build core computing skills and knowledge. In your first year you will gain a solid grounding in programming, platforms and operating systems, and be introduced to the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, together with practical skills in Python programming. Your second year will focus in depth on software engineering, data structures and algorithms, relational and NoSQL databases, and Data Mining, together with the necessary computing research skills needed to carry out your final year project work. In your final year you will be assigned a supervisor to guide you and who is familiar with your chosen topic. Diagnostic Radiographers produce high quality images to diagnose injury, illness and disease, using a variety of imaging modalities including X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Nuclear Medicine. Each examination is different, requiring radiographers to have excellent communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. You will study the science underpinning image production and radiation safety and develop a detailed understanding of the anatomy, physiology and pathology required by diagnostic radiographers. You will learn about the diverse needs of the individuals attending for imaging, supported by stories from service users and your experiences in practice. Many graduates work in the NHS, but there is an increasing number of openings in the private sector. Radiographers can also work in education, research and industry (sales or development). Graduates are eligible to apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to practice.

DIGITAL FILM PRODUCTION

This degree explores the creative and professional aspects of filmmaking. Working in small crews, students are trained in a multitude of roles including camera operator, director, producer, lighting technician, editor and sound recordist. This practical filmmaking knowledge is supplemented by modules in screenwriting and film theory, providing students with the creative, technical, critical and entrepreneurial skills to begin a professional career. Our teaching facilities have been completely refurbished and upgraded. We have a large multipurpose production studio used for shoots, skills workshops and masterclasses, as well as showcasing student work. There is a dedicated colour grading suite with DaVinci Resolve Studio software and mini panel, and a large edit suite with all computers running the industry standard software Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools. We also have an audio post-production studio with 5.1 surround sound and teach students how to record, edit and mix sound professionally during two dedicated audio modules. Students have access to top-of-the-range professional equipment throughout the year, including Sony FS5, Canon DSLR and Blackmagic Ursa Mini 4k cameras, a variety of zoom and fast prime lenses, 633 sound mixers and audio kits, lighting and grip gear. Students also have the opportunity to learn on ARRI ALEXA Mini LF cameras, which were used in the filming of Sam Mendes’ 1917. Students obtain a wide range of transferable skills, in the classroom and through work placements and are well positioned to respond to changes in the modern film and broadcast landscape and succeed in this highly competitive industry. Past graduates have found employment with Warner Bros., Fox Searchlight, BBC, Grade A Productions, Applause Store Productions, Apple and iSite TV, in roles such as film editor, cinematographer, visual effects editor, talent runner, audience manager and programmer.

EARLY YEARS PRACTICE

This course offers a vocational qualification and is designed to encourage all practitioners employed or volunteering in the Early Years sector working with children from birth to twelve and those aspiring to work with young children, to access higher education to develop through academic and experiential learning. It emphasises multi-agency working, helping to create a workforce committed to joint working and improving standards of care for all children. You will study a range of modules such as: introduction to professional practice through research; children’s development and promoting wellbeing; inclusive practice; safeguarding young children; early years’ research; and supporting play and learning, all through one day a week of university attendance. As this is an employment-based course, you will require the support of your employer/setting to successfully complete the qualification. You will also need a mentor in the workplace to support you with your studies and you will need to be in practice for 12 hours per week, this could be on a voluntary basis. On completion, you can progress to a BA (Hons) (Progression Route) in Early Learning. Completing this Foundation degree and then progressing to complete a relevant BA (Hons) (Progression Route), you would then be able to undertake postgraduate study, such as Initial Teacher Training. Distance Learning pathway In addition to traditional on-campus study, the FdA Early Years Practice can be studied via Distance Learning. This has been created in response to a need for practitioners working in the sector, wishing to study alongside their full-time employment. This course provides the opportunity for Early Years practitioners working within the sector to access higher education for simultaneous development of academic and experiential learning entirely online through the University’s Online Learning Environment (OLE). On completion, you can continue your studies to Level 6 by progressing to the BA (Hons) Early Learning (Progression Route) which is also available as Distance Learning.

Before applying, I did my research and found that the Course Leaders and Tutors at the University of Suffolk were friendly and passionate about their subjects. The University provides loads of support and resources, and Infozone is a great starting point for useful information. You will find some fantastic staff to help you! I encourage everyone to take up every opportunity for support as this will help to make your studies easier. Since starting University I have been inspired to try and make a difference by advocating for social justice and take a stand against inequalities. In 2019, I was elected as the BAME Officer for the Students’ Union (SU). Although this is a part-time role alongside my studies, I am really committed and work closely with the SU to provide support, advice, and guidance for students and staff. I have also started the first BAME Society; we have regular events, hold drop-in sessions and work with staff and students to understand any challenges being faced, provide a safe and respected environment, and ensure a fair learning experience for all. My favourite part of campus is the new social area; I think it is the best thing ever for socialising and relaxing with friends. The campus location is just right, perfect for walking into the busy town centre with loads of facilities and shops. The University is right on the Waterfront; it feels and looks amazing any time of the year. If you want a different and unique experience, I recommend the University of Suffolk.

I chose the University of Suffolk because I wanted to work full-time while I studied. The smaller classes and informal contact with lecturers are a real bonus, you get better one-to-one support and being on first name terms with everyone makes for more relaxed learning. The campus is modern and spacious and right on the Waterfront which is far nicer during down-time than being in the middle of a busy city, though it is only a short walk into the town centre. I am one of the mentors on the Suffolk Life Mentor Scheme giving new students the chance to meet someone to point them in the right direction and get the most out of their time at university and I’ve found Infozone great for general queries, they quickly get things sorted. I’m also involved with the SU as Business School Officer and Student Trustee of the SU Board. It’s so easy to get involved helping the SU to grow and thrive and gives all students a better experience. I work full-time as a Civil Servant and they’ve been fully supportive of my desire to get a degree. I get my timetable well in advance and resources are readily available on Brightspace if I need support outside of university. I never feel guilty approaching my lecturers for additional advice and support. They are always more than happy to give their time and it can really help in the more complicated parts of your course.

MIDWIFERY

The BSc (Hons) Midwifery course prepares students to practice midwifery in all settings, including a hospital environment, community setting or a woman’s home. You will be prepared for the academic award of BSc (Hons) Midwifery and be eligible for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The course enables you to explore and develop the skills associated with the art and science of midwifery practice. You will study the role of the midwife, providing care for women and families at the time of pregnancy, labour, birth and early parenting. The skills and underpinning knowledge are explored and practised both on campus in the Clinical Skills Laboratory and in practice placements, working alongside midwifery and other health and social care professionals. Modules studied include anatomy and physiology relating to childbearing; sociological and psychological aspects of childbearing; critiquing research and how it informs evidencebased practice; and the role of the midwife. In practice, you will gain valuable experience working with midwives, learning from them as you develop skills and confidence. Working with women and families and the multidisciplinary team will also prove invaluable to your learning on the course. There is a strong support network, learning from peers in small groups and the midwifery teaching team, who specialise in hypnobirthing, normal birth, high-risk care and public health.

The Adult Nursing course has so many opportunities, including connections with other nurses around the world. The lecturers are lovely and have inspired me with their different stories of becoming a nurse and their backgrounds and specialisms. The strong community within the course and the University as a whole motivates me, I always feel supported in my studies. The staff here understand that every student is different, learning in different ways, at different levels and pace. There’s a place for every individual to be themselves. I have made great friends and my whole cohort are an inspiring group of people. I think our lectures are more enjoyable because we’re a smaller University, we can all engage a lot more and feel supported as a team. All the modules have been interesting and exciting so far! I have recently finished my first placement in hospital, applying theory, such as anatomy and physiology to practise has been a great experience. The location is the best, I enjoy my walks to the University every day! It is fun to have different places to go for studies, lectures and clinical skills. The Waterfront building always feels welcoming and I love venturing over to the John Heir Building for clinical skills, it’s allowed me to become more confident and prepare for going into practice, and the library over the road is perfect to sit and study with my friends. NETWORK ENGINEERING

We live in a networked world, where computing and communications have converged. Our home computers, our work computers, our tablets and our mobile phones link us to networks, wired Ethernet, WiFi, 4G/5G cellular, radio, or satellite, enabling us to work, to play, to talk and live our lives online. This degree will provide you with the skills to design, build, test and maintain networks of every kind, so that you become an expert network engineer. Your course will start by providing you with fundamental skills and knowledge within the area of network maintenance and configuration and progressing to explore advanced routing and switching, project management and on to advanced internet and mobile technologies. As networks become defined by software, we add in computer programming and databases to expand the skills set and provide a deep understanding of cyber security. All students will also be prepared for security and CISCO networking industrial certification, but it is not mandatory for you to take the associated certification exams. As a graduate of this course, you should expect to secure employment in the IT industry generally and with telecommunication and carrier providers especially, as network designers, mobile and wireless network engineers, network administrators, project managers, network security specialists and similar roles. SCREENWRITING

The BA (Hons) Screenwriting course at the University of Suffolk teaches students how to write professional-quality screenplays for film and television through a programme of intensive creative writing workshops. The degree is taught by award-winning screenwriters, script editors and visiting industry professionals. Students graduate with a full-length ‘calling card’ script (or a pilot episode and series outline), a portfolio of highly-developed work, and all the essential skills required to launch a career as a successful screenwriter. The course places firm emphasis on practical writing, with modules and assignments designed to mirror current industry-standard development processes throughout. You will be shown how to nurture a story from initial idea to a polished final draft by using key documents such as loglines, premises, synopses, step-outlines and treatments. Small class sizes and exceptional tutor support ensure that you receive frequent, substantial feedback on your creative work and you will hone your critical skills by studying some of the greatest screenplays ever written. The course provides opportunities to write for a range of genres and formats (including feature films, short films, sitcoms, adaptations and soaps) and a range of mediums such as television, radio and digital platforms. Radiotherapy is the use of high energy X-rays, and other ionising radiations, to treat patients who have a cancer diagnosis. Therapeutic Radiographers use cutting edge technology in the preparation and delivery of increasingly complex approaches to cancer treatment. Therefore, excellent scientific, technical and numerical skills are essential. The University is equipped with a 3D immersive Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT), and ten Varian Eclipse treatment planning workstations. These programmes are designed for those interested in working as designers, engineers or managers within the civil engineering and construction industry. Both provide a thorough grounding in the role and function of the Civil Engineer as well as the more specialist areas of civil engineering practice. Both the FdSc and BSc (Hons) (Progression Route) are delivered on a part-time basis and are specifically aimed at those who are already in, or aiming to be in employment within the civil engineering industry and who have the full support of their employer. Attendance is required one day a week, on a day release basis for two semesters per year. The first semester runs from September to January and the second from January to May. Students come from a variety of employment backgrounds including general civil engineering, local government, highways management, structural design and specialist sub-contracting companies. Students study the environmental and ethical impact of construction activity, alongside the scientific, mathematical and technical study of a range of theoretical and practical work in materials technology, structures, health and safety, geology, law, hydraulics and sustainability supported by an extensively equipped laboratory. Several of the subjects within these programmes are delivered with the assistance of full-time professional engineers who bring with them a wealth of practical experience of their subject and of the civil engineering industry. Students will apply knowledge and participate in practical activities through these and other employers. In addition, students will complete independent work placements outside course hours. Climate, energy, resource and ecological uncertainty define the beginning of the 21st century. The FdSc in Environment and Sustainable Energy is a unique and multi-disciplinary programme aimed at individuals with a strong interest in the environment, conservation and sustainability science, but with a desire to investigate and understand the carbon economy, climate change, non-carbon and renewable technologies, and the interactions and impacts these have on the climate, ecosystems, ecology, wildlife and human populations. The Foundation degree in fashion and textiles is designed to enable students to develop the creative and practical skills to pursue a career in the industry. There are various entry routes available to start a career at sea within the Merchant Navy. In East Coast College, you will study a two-year programme that gives you skills sought by shipping companies. Additionally, you will be required to sail a total of one year at sea to complete work-based learning and gain internationally recognised qualifications needed to become a professional seafarer. You will gain core leadership, navigation, shipboard operation and meteorological skills through time on ships and in our simulator. You have an opportunity to distinguish yourself with a degree accredited by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB), which will provide the underpinning knowledge for the Officer in charge of Navigation Watch (OOW) Unlimited under the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) (Regulation II/1) and Chief Mate Unlimited Under STCW (Regulation II/2) Certificates of Competency (CoC). This course provides high quality professional counsellor education through a supportive and stimulating learning experience. It is delivered by experienced, practising person-centred counsellors and offers a wide range of learning experiences including experiential, theoretical, placements, group and individual work. The course offers opportunities for personal development and is designed and implemented in accordance with the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) requirements, supporting students in acquiring the supervised placement hours required towards BACP accreditation. The Foundation degree in Professional Photographic Practice provides the opportunity to develop your photography/postproduction skills alongside your awareness of opportunities within the sector and the necessity of self-promotional work through marketing, social media and portfolio development. Arts and photography programmes are based in East Coast College’s purpose-built studios at the Great Yarmouth campus. Studio 1 houses three computer bays and one set of Macs, which all have up-to-date software including the complete Adobe suite, Final Cut Pro and Microsoft Office programmes. Within this area is also a digital printer suitable for large-scale exhibition prints. There are rooms attached to the studio, which provide the opportunity for photographers to use traditional black and white darkroom methods, a fully equipped green screen studio with lighting (including ambient) and a still-life table. A technician is available to support students and to hire out a wide variety of camera equipment including Nikon cameras, 35mm-large format film cameras, tripods, LED lighting and video cameras. Academic skills are developed through contextual study of genre and individual practitioners, and progression to Level 6 is provided through the BA (Hons) Arts Practice (Progression Route). You will concentrate on your portfolio development and will have the opportunity to exhibit your work through annual art exhibitions and other promotional events. This course is designed to deliver the practical, critical and theoretical tools required by the modern film and TV visual effects post-production industry. Visual effects post-production is common in modern film and TV programmes; this course offers students the opportunity to develop the skills and techniques to produce visually impressive pieces of work and to stand out to the visual effects industry. The BA (Hons) (Progression Route) provides students holding a Foundation degree in Visual Effects and Post-Production or similar post-production/VFX Level 5 qualification a route to obtaining a full Honours degree. The course has a focus on high-quality film making with an emphasis on visual effects and post-production techniques, including the opportunity to work with VFX fluid dynamics and 3D model and environment constructions. Creativity, inspiration and commitment are developed to enable students to produce their vision in a range of VFX/film projects. Hands-on professional work placement opportunities are available with local production companies, and industry specific events and trips give students relevant industry experience. A unique aspect of the course is the in-course production company AMP which gives students valuable real-life work experience, AMP takes on live commissioning briefs from businesses and communities within the local area and we have a close working relationship with the creative industries within the eastern region.

BTEC HIGHER NATIONALS Our partner colleges deliver both Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses, targeted at delivering specialist vocational learning. HNCs and HNDs are awarded by Pearson, a well-established national awarding body, and studying these with the University of Suffolk allows students to benefit from the combination of a nationally recognised curriculum delivered by local experts in the field. Students also benefit from the close relationships that our tutors have with local employers, ensuring delivery reflects current knowledge and development, preparing students to take their place in employment.

Learning and teaching on Higher National courses is characterised by an emphasis on ensuring theoretical content is well grounded in industrial practice, complemented by opportunities for workbased learning, and individual and group project work.

Part-time study of a HNC will take around two years, with a further one or two years required to achieve a HND. A full HND will typically take two years’ full-time study to complete. Following the completion of a HND, students are often able to progress onto Honours degree courses, usually requiring one or two further years of study.

Our apprenticeships are offered at Levels 5–7 and apprentices are awarded a Foundation degree (Level 5), a Bachelor degree (Level 6) or a Masters degree (Level 7) at the end of their course.

The Apprenticeship Hub The Apprenticeship Hub is based in the Ipswich Waterfront Innovation Centre (IWIC), located within The Atrium. The Hub has been set up to support apprentices and employers on their journey providing a one-stop-shop working across various professional and support services within the University of Suffolk.

Apprentices have a contract of employment with their employer and are required to spend at least 20% of their working hours undertaking apprenticeship training. Training takes place either at the University or within specialist teaching facilities agreed with the employer; using the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) or within the workplace.

Funding Apprentices will normally be in full-time employment and are therefore not eligible for additional financial support either through Student Finance England or directly from the University. Apprenticeship training is funded by the employer.

Assessments Apprentices will undertake a range of assessments as required by their degree course, including work-based projects, assignments, exams, presentations and group work. To complete the apprenticeship, apprentices will be required to sit an End Point Assessment (EPA). Upon completion, apprentices will receive their University Award (e.g. Bachelor degree) and a certificate of completion.

How to apply

Higher and Degree Apprenticeships

Prospective apprentices must be in employment and will need to apply for an apprenticeship at the University via their employer. Employers contract

the University of Suffolk to deliver the apprenticeship training and prospective apprentices are sent an application to complete. For reference, the fees for 2021/22 are: £9,250 per year for full-time BA/BSc degrees and £8,220 per year for full-time FdA/FdSc degrees.

Working while studying

Part-time study is £1,454 per 20-credit module for Bachelor degrees and £1,370 per 20-credit module for Foundation degrees. Fees for a full-time HNC/HND are £6,168 per year. Part-time HNC/HND fees are £771 per 15-credit module, and £1,028 per 20 credit module. Fees for two year accelerated degrees are £11,100 per year.

Healthcare grant In December 2019, the Government announced that from September 2020 all health students will receive a non-repayable and non-means tested grant of £5,000 a year, in addition to existing financial support for students. Individuals wishing to study full-time undergraduate courses should apply online through UCAS at ucas.com/apply You will need to select the University of Suffolk institution code (S82), and the course and campus code for your programme. These details are provided on the course pages of our website. For September 2022 entry you can complete and submit your application from September 2021.

How to apply

You should submit your application by 15 January 2022 for your application to be given equal consideration. We may still be able to consider your application after this date, depending on your choice of course. If you are applying after 15 January 2022, please contact us or check the course page on our website to find out if your course is still open before you make your application.
