Leonie Hamill
Residing in this innovative home is an intergenerational family from India, consisting of parents, two children and grandparents. The family’s values centre around traditional Indian culture and cuisine, so a strong emphasis on a well-organised storage system for the heavy use of spices and flavours was needed.
Daily meals are prepared by mother and grandmother; it was important for the layout to reflect how the pair liked to work together. Dividing the room into zones has resulted in a multifunctional kitchen suitable for all generations to engage in different activities simultaneously. A designated area for spices, grains, and heavily used utensils has met the brief for a well organised storage system that is both uncluttered and practical.
Dark timber contrasted with light stone and fully integrated appliances creates a truly contemporary design. Innovative curved corners on the cabinetry and recessed handles in aged brass further elevate the wow factor. The large island dining table with bespoke legs is a stand-out feature to inspire guests and entertain. Seating can be arranged around the island to foster conversation during mealtimes. Variety is the spice of life in this innovative kitchen, and the family could not be happier.

A phenomenal kitchen with many challenging elements and a standout in the 2024 EiD awards. From a design detailing perspective, this kitchen is a level above. It is a beautiful kitchen, that looks great from every angle; the designer hasn’t missed any detail, just look at the leg on the island, it is visually stunning. Another area of success in this space is the interpretation of the brief, they haven’t overdone it, and have designed a superb kitchen that works very well for multiple cooks. It is clever, clean and modern and the main core island is just exceptional. We love it.

The homeowner requested that the ensuite feel light and bright, while also moody in the evening. They wanted a large double shower with a dumper and a bidet toilet, in addition to a ‘his and hers’ vanity with a good amount of storage. To create both moods of light and bright during the day and moody in the evening, Georgia worked with natural and artificial light.
The spatial design was determined by the high window in the shower. The shower was designed in a decorative glass enclosure. The bottom of the glass detail is an etched fabric look print to provide privacy and ease for cleaning. The top of the glass is clear to flood natural light into the bathroom.
The vanity was designed in front of the glass enclosure, in the centre of the ensuite, to allow natural light onto the face. Hanging mirrors create drama and height. The vanity was designed with a beautiful Fior Di Bosco marble mitred to 110mm to create a palatial high-end hotel like feel.

THE JUDGES SAID
A nicely detailed bathroom with unique features, stunning materials and tones. A lovely space that walks the delicate line between masculine and feminine. There are so many incredible design details. The texture and the consistent use of metallics and luxurious materials are all very successful in the space. The bath Is an interesting and stunning feature, as is the giant walk-in shower. This designer has a very good understanding of bathroom design, they know how to define a space and we applaud the technical design. One particularly successful aspect is the way the space allows for communication and solitude; the zones are separate and at the same time connected, which allows for varying degrees of privacy.

THE 2024 JUDGES SHOWERED HEAVY PRAISE ON ALINA FOR HER DESIGNER OF THE YEAR AWARD.
Alina is a Bronze designer and a first time
It is a rare and incredible achievement for a Bronze designer to take out two of NKBA’s most prized awards, winning Designer of the Year and Kitchen Distinction $120k+. Alina is a relative newcomer to the New Zealand design scene, becoming employed by Cube Dentro

She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in interior design in 2012 and worked as an interior designer for a few years before her

We are extremely impressed with this first-time entrant. There was a high calibre of design execution from aesthetics to the quality of plans in their entries. In addition, the designer produced some lovely details and the delivery of beautiful and creative spaces. Luxe Living Kitchen is in a vacation home, designed with three wishes in mind. First to capture the breathtaking views, secondly to enhance indoor and outdoor flow and finally to create a gathering point for the whole family.
A beverage centre and an outdoor kitchen area were also required. Inspired by their Italian heritage, the client desired a luxe European look, one that was cohesive with the rest of the home. The kitchen now stands as a social hub, where the entire family can gather around the marble island and solid oak round table. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the oak table was strategically elevated to function as an informal bar leaner, softening the straight lines of the kitchen and fostering an inviting atmosphere for social interaction. Thoughtful spatial planning, design and exquisite craftsmanship has resulted in a kitchen space that meets the client’s brief.

This is a stunning looking kitchen with a wonderful use of materials and textures. The judges love the curves on the end of the bar and the way the splashback behind the cooktop slides open. This is a great party house. It almost has two personalities, one as a functional kitchen and the other as a bar. These homeowners definitely entertain, more than they cook. It is a wow kitchen with a fantastic combination of stone and timber along with the right proportions of curves.

ETERNODESIGN
Emma Morris
This beautiful bathroom was part of an extensive 1930s, three-story, homestead renovation. The bathroom design brief was to tailor a spacious, luxurious, yet functional space with a freestanding bath, double vanity, mirrors, walk-in shower, hidden toilet, and sufficient venting.
The aim was to use a delicate touch and create warmth with carefully chosen materials and finishes to best capture the beauty of the space. This was achieved with a textured palette, soft, subtle lighting, colour, and attention to detail. Subtly grooved floor to ceiling tiles contrast with large warm porcelain tiles, producing the perfect backdrop to a magnificent freestanding belle vessel bath. The carefully designed tile layout was achieved through close collaboration of designer and artisan to ensure attention to detail and that the grooved tiles, mitred edges, and larger format tiles all flow seamlessly.
Two bespoke, bevelled-edged mirrors accentuate the verticality of the bathroom. A pared-back, double wall-mounted vanity has been wrapped in American oak timber and features a 12mm glazier white benchtop and framed drawers. Striking brushed-brass
heated towel rails and a grooved wall act like a piece of art, adding lovely depth while concealing the shower and toilet. Shutters provide privacy while allowing natural light to filter through.
THE JUDGES SAID
A lovely, soft, tranquil bathroom. The shower is gorgeous, and the space has a generous use of texture. Pretty, restrained and refined, this bathroom is calming and offers a sense of respite. The textured stone provides layers and warmth and the shower niche with the lighting is a beautiful addition. Like the name of the project suggests, it is tranquil, almost like a Balinese day spa with its calm tones and timber accents. An inviting space.

This kitchen is defined by ultra-minimalism, leveraging a palette of light grey and black to highlight architectural sophistication.
Super matte lacquers enhance the tactile experience, with the centrepiece of the space, a 4.2m long Nero Assoluto peninsula island, featuring a leather texture and an innovative appearance. A key innovation is the island’s diagonal separation of cooking and cleaning zones, accentuated by an LED strip for ambiance and a unique upper frame design for a modern edge.
The island’s front showcases butterflywing cabinets with Salice air hinges and Kesseböhmer shelves, blending sleek aesthetics with futuristic functionality. Customengineered solutions ensure the longevity and smooth operation of these elements. Unlike traditional kitchens, the homeowner opted against a breakfast bar, seeking instead a spacious, elongated bench that complements the island’s functionality while enhancing the minimalist aesthetic. A linear pendant light and negative detailing on the tall units enhances the kitchen’s open feel and cohesive design. The handle less back wall integrates a Fisher & Paykel oven series and a concealed pantry, leading to a hidden chef’s kitchen.

This is an ultra-modern and minimal kitchen that has been achieved with a high degree of detailing and craftsmanship. There are many subtle and unique design details that have helped this project to succeed. A lot of the design details are hidden, not noticed at first, however when you dig deeper it is very layered. The island is an example of this, with its discreet layering in height, mitred doors and extremely bespoke corner door detailing. There are hidden gems consistently throughout this project. The detailing is subtle but bold. It is sexy.

With a timeless aesthetic that complements the breathtaking views, this kitchen has been purposely designed to be big on functionality and make entertaining easy. Working with the small footprint of the home, designer Jenny Holmes created a design that allowed for maximum storage and practicality, while ensuring a seamless fl ow around the kitchen and to the adjoining living room and deck. Demonstrating this, the angle of the internal wall is repeated on the dining room table for emphasis and fl ow to adjoining spaces.

area makes good use of available space beside the living room gas fi re. When in use, a mirrored back wall adds wow factor when entertaining.
Continuing the theme of steel joinery seen in the dining table, a steel-framed wall cabinet imparts a sense of lightness. Powder-coated to blend with the wall colour, it recedes into the background and provides a hidden space for the TV. Timber veneer cabinets complement the timber fl ooring and cedar-clad walls, while soft, muted neutrals were chosen for a serene interior.
Integrated appliances and handle-free cabinetry maintain clean lines, while textures like the old recycled European oak dining table add depth to the design. Orienting the kitchen towards both the view and the living room makes for e ffortless entertaining and socialising for any occasion.

CARMEN HUBBER

AWARDS CATEGORY WINNER SOUTHERN CHAPTER RECOGNITION — KITCHEN
A Queenstown family loved their new home but wanted that extra-special touch to make it feel like their own. With three teens, including one keen chef, and a mother who adores cooking and preserving, the kitchen needed to be functional, welcoming and the heart of the home.
The kitchen was in a di ffi cult spot, so the design needed to take into consideration the existing schist stone columns and the layout – a long narrow room with a large fireplace near the island. The kitchen was integral to the family’s social activities, so the decision was made to extend it past the sliding door and into the adjacent sitting area. This not only opened up the space, but made entertaining much easier.

The kitchen contains a discreet bar with integrated Sub-Zero wine fridges behind pocket doors “

The rustic round feature table on the end of the island balances the long narrow feel of the room. The table also pays homage to the rich gold-mining history of the Central Otago region, with its riveted steel base and aged timber top. It created a cosy talking space for the family, overlooking the vegetable and herb garden.
The kitchen contains a discreet bar with integrated SubZero wine fridges behind pocket doors. This area doubles as a display for the family’s beautiful antique pieces, which bring added colour and texture to the space.
The island’s induction hob has pipe-style extractors to minimise the obstruction of the mountain views and to echo the style of the round rustic feature table. The pantry now has a custom steel door which complements the steel base of the feature table and offers a glimpse into the natural texture of the tiles and custom timber shelving.
By incorporating materials that complement nature –travertine tiles, beautiful Neolith porcelain reminiscent of jade, and natural timbers and steel – the kitchen has been transformed into a cohesive, warm, homely and purposeful room the family loves.

DESIGNER
MICHELLE GILLBANKS
Kitchens By Design
Two years after enlisting the help of designer Michelle Gillbanks to transform their kitchen, the homeowners wanted to update the second most important room of their abode, the master ensuite.
The clients wanted the renovation to be in keeping with the 1950s home’s character, but with much more glamour. It also needed to make better use of the space, and considering the existing built-in bathtub hadn’t been used for 20 years, it was the first thing to go. This provided more space for much-needed storage and a full suite of amenities, including a double vanity, a freestanding tall storage unit with rubbish bins and a large shower.
The vanity, with two beautiful geometric crystal brassframed hanging pendants, adds a lovely symmetry to the space. The LED light shines directly on top of the crystal, re fl ecting intricate patterns onto the walls, ceilings and the

crisp white vessel basins. Brushed-brass wall-mounted spouts and mixers add extra glimmer.
Custom-made cabinetry provides ample storage to give both users of the bathroom their own space. The traditional tall unit has a detailed cornice with uplighting and large grooved tapered posts to ground it. Another exquisite design detail is the fl oor-to-ceiling Italian tiles, a stunning mix of black, brass and white that sets the tone for the room’s colour palette.
The bathroom’s original scotia was reinstated, fl owing through to the adjacent bedroom and the rest of the home. This retains the original look of the house while adding an enviable modern luxury and elegance to the bathroom.

For these reasons, an open-concept layout that integrates the kitchen, dining area and living spaces was chosen. This design promotes an atmosphere of openness and sociability, making it ideal for hosting guests and promoting bonding moments in the daily use of the kitchen.
At the core of the design is a versatile island serving as the kitchen’s centrepiece. The exquisite Caesarstone Bianco Drift with a waterfall finish, paired with a solid oak bar, enhances both the aesthetics and functionality of the space. This choice not only enhances the visual appeal, but also provides an ideal setting for culinary creations and social interactions.
The back wall features brushed stainless steel, while the kitchen and pantry fronts showcase Prime Art Planked Oak, stained to accentuate the beautiful vertical grain. The pantry comprises another brushed stainless bench and a striking steel splashback.
The wingwalls and pantry door have been designed with a steel surround and oak slats to evoke drama with light and shadow while keeping the space open. Placing the main fridge in the pantry maintains the openness of the front kitchen area, and the bar seamlessly blends into its surroundings with the schist door panels closed during the day. During opening hours, the bar comes to life with LED strip lights!
This design focused on entertaining and accommodating a family of four along with their extended relatives. The result is a welcoming environment that fosters socialising and shared experiences.

A family’s TV room has been transformed into a bar which perfectly exudes 1920s Parisian glamour. The space, located on the main living floor and leading to the outdoor pool area, is perfect for entertaining family and friends in style.
The starting point for the design was the shapes existing in the room – the curve of the bay window and the curved window seat. The curves in the arches of the bar shelving and the curve of the bar benchtop and cabinetry were repeated throughout, with the curve of the bar also serving to create a smoother traffic flow around the room.

The U-shaped bar contains a double keg pourer with a keg fridge and a wine fridge, perfect for keeping up with the demands of a roaring party. A single DishDrawer dishwasher and double rubbish bins contain any mess, providing practical clean-up services.
Plenty of storage is provided with drawers and cupboards; the cupboards on the outer side of the table are perfect for storing the family’s board games. LED lighting in the shelving area and under the bar overhangs adds to the glamour, while the home’s chandelier was restored and hung above the round table in the bay window.
Oak timber veneer offers warmth, and the fi nishing touch to the room is provided by the custom brass foot rail and the brass edge of the polished Dekton benchtop. Small mosaic tiles curve around the upstand between the two bench heights. The result is a family-friendly bar that welcomes guests into this homely yet classically chic environment.

LARISSA BREUKELAAR
Modern Age Kitchens & Joinery

A couple who adore entertaining in their home needed a kitchen that would allow them to do so. Their previous kitchen didn’t have enough room to welcome people, and it also lacked storage.
The 1920s dwelling was due for a refresh and the owners were after a light and calming kitchen that would better utilise the space. The existing footprint of the kitchen was retained and by pushing out the area to the end of the wall, a U-shape was created. This then provided more storage and more bench space.
A centralised cooking zone allowed for a coffee nook area to the right of the pantry, as well as room around the cooktop for preparation. Utilising space next to the oven for oftenused cooking ingredients, as well as having internal drawers within the pantry, freed up space and ensured everything needed for cooking is organised and accessible.
The incorporation of curves and a minimal handle design added a softness to the room, which plays nicely with the angle of the ceiling above. The selection of warm lighting adds to the calming and welcoming feel of the kitchen.
Creating a biophilic design by using materials that mimic nature is thought to decrease stress. To elicit a natural feel in this the space, Acrymatte Coconut was paired with a beautiful 12mm Dekton to bring texture and lightness to the space, while Liquid Shell Dekton injected pearlescent shades of white with rippling patterns of the ocean fl oor.

Use of materiality adds interest while also cleverly concealing critical elements, creating the ultimate hidden gem “

VIKKI WHYTE
This kitchen has been designed to be the focal point of a builder’s own new home, acting as a stunning showpiece for their own clients. It also needed to be functional for the young family to use in their busy day-to-day lives.
With a focus on integrating appliances and providing smart storage solutions, the space also connects harmoniously with the architecture of the home. By restricting the colour palette, visual interest was created with textural elements and crafted details.
A large walk-in pantry, located behind an oak slatted wall with a concealed door to the left of the kitchen, provides a practical space for small appliances and bulk food storage. The strong vertical lines of the slats respond to the three vertical columns in the entry adjoining the kitchen. The oak slats are featured again on the storage cupboards to the back of the island and together with the pantry wall, they frame the kitchen within the large open-plan space while also cleverly hiding visible practical storage.
The bank of tall cabinetry contains a pantry for daily food storage, along with an integrated fridge and freezer. Clad in oak veneer, this ties the two ends of the kitchen together with height and common materiality.
The main kitchen colour was selected to match that of the under-bench oven – as the only visible appliance, it blends into the surrounding cabinetry. The expansive island provides an ample preparation zone and is an inviting space for the family and guests to gather. The engineered stone bench is repeated on the island, hob bench and splashback, with the subtle vein pattern adding texture and connection to the colour story.
Centrally located within the footprint of the home, the kitchen fl ows to the dining, living and outdoor entertaining spaces seamlessly, and the design of the kitchen ensures the cook is always connected with family and guests.
The result is a stunning kitchen with strong visual impact that sits comfortably within the home’s architecture. Use of materiality adds interest while also cleverly concealing critical elements, creating the ultimate hidden gem.

Considered spatial planning was important for functionality and fl exibility

This home by the sea in Bach provided an exciting yet challenging prospect. Considered spatial planning was important for the functionality and fl exibility necessary for the work-at-home homeowners.
Their love of mid-century design was demonstrated by the framing of individual cabinets. The dining booth incorporated behind the peninsula island was chosen as a hub for eating, socialising and working. A perfect space saver and ful fi lling the need for a “must have” dining area, the kitchen island gives a nod to the couple’s beloved midcentury style. It is north-facing, making the most of the spectacular sea views.
The previous kitchen and laundry were merged to create a multi-purpose space. A cooking zone was positioned at the rear of the kitchen, allowing unimpaired movement between sink and hob. Additional bench space for a coffee machine was selected away from the main kitchen, with the placement of a washing machine on the western wall segregating di fferent functions.

When renovating their rural property, this creative family wanted improved flexibility and functionality, fast hot-water supply, better storage, modern appliances and a dramatic aesthetic. A favoured piece of art was to inspire the colour and material palette. Drama was necessary for the kitchen to sit comfortably among strong architectural elements.
For this revamped modern farmhouse, an asymmetrical layout saw the working area near the scullery and fridge, with a social and seating zone near the drinks station allowing di fferent tasks to happen simultaneously.
An induction cooktop was selected as it was easy to clean, has a low profi le and excellent cooking e ffi ciency. LED lighting provides ample illumination for food prep and enjoyment. The choice of 12mm Dekton frames the cooking zone, while Dezignatek cabinetry’s nano technology minimises fi ngerprints.
With ample storage and clever waste systems to manage composting, chook scraps, land fi ll and recycling, the space works harmoniously and is a comfortable, enticing place for the family to be.

A home by a pond was in need of a revamp, with the master bedroom blessed with good bones but having no style. The bedroom had limited storage and one family bathroom, shared with teenagers.
The solution was to divide up the room to create a walkin wardrobe and ensuite. A tall, slim window was added to allow morning sun to come into the generous shower. Pink and grey tones give a nod to the ’70s, as well as provide a softer aesthetic.
The Blush bowl was the start of building up the colour theme with a matching Yubi Blossom fi nger tile, complementing the large Calacatta matt tiles on the fl oor and walls. A rounding element in the cabinetry and benchtop matched with the Moonglow Nature basin.
The matt-black-framed glass shower enclosure packs a punch, as do the black bathroom fi ttings and knobs on the vanity. The curve is replicated in the stacked benchtops which help create de finition of the wet area. The curve also eliminates sharp corners and provides a safety element in this small ensuite, which is also a thoroughfare to the spa.
KITCHEN STUDIO WAIKATO

The new owners of a 10-year-old home on a lifestyle block were hoping to bring a mid-century feel to it. The kitchen in its original location did not provide enough space or storage, so it was relocated to the south-west side, overlooking a pond.
A 2.4m x 6.6m pop-out over the pond was added to contain the kitchen. It has a 700mm deep cedar frame overhang and nib walls to prevent the afternoon sun reaching into the kitchen, and give the external architecture a mid-century flavour.
The kitchen had the length for all the cooking, preparation and cleaning zones on one wall. Fridge and pantry were close at hand, with the scullery tucked in. To complement the layered benches, stepped vertical faces were included after the top-drawer line. A mixture of mahogany veneer, stainless-steel and lacquered faces provide fun and durability in areas of high wear.
Direct access to the outdoors was provided either end of the pop-out. An outdoor kitchen was designed for the barbecue on one side, while the other door was identi fi ed as the new main entrance to the home due to changes in garaging and tra ffi c fl ow.
A stepped circular designed island not only allows for wide tra ffi c fl ows around the island, but also gathers guests together in a social circle separated away from the kitchen. A small scullery is hidden behind the fridge and pantry, with a huge amount of storage provided.

The kitchen of a semi-retired professional couple in their architectural new build was designed to embody a light, airy and luxurious atmosphere while ensuring comfort and functionality.
Incorporating Lifemark standards was crucial for future-proofing the space, ensuring accessibility and ease of use as the couple progresses through later stages of life. The layout features an island bench free of obstacles, promoting seamless movement and interaction within the kitchen area.
The appliances and the sink have been strategically placed along the back wall, optimising work fl ow and maintaining a clean, uncluttered aesthetic on the island. The toe-kick height and depth were strategically increased, facilitating easy access for all users. In line with these standards, handles were selected solely on lower cabinets, with upper cabinetry featuring push-to-open mechanisms for e ffortless operation.
At the heart of the design lies the selection of the natural Taj Mahal Quartzite for the boxed island countertop, evoking a sense of grandeur with its luxurious feel and captivating veining reminiscent of a braided river. A polished concrete fl oor provides a modern, sleek foundation for the design. Bespoke joinery was designed for the butler’s pantry and other areas of the dwelling.
The result is not just a home, but a sanctuary where accessibility and luxury converge seamlessly, enriching the lives of its inhabitants for years to come.
