UNICEF and UNICEF USA are jointly launching an Industry Toolkit on Children’s Online Privacy & Freedom of Expression (the “Toolkit”). The Toolkit contains five, rights-based “General Principles” and a practical checklist for companies to review their policies and practices.
• The General Principles — grounded in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) — apply broadly — and outline how policymakers, companies, educators, parents and children can respect and protect children’s online privacy rights while also enabling their rights to online freedom of expression.
• The Checklist (the “Checklist”) in the Toolkit is designed for use by any company that has an impact on children’s rights in the digital environment, from online service providers to game and toy brands, and offers additional suggestions to online platforms, mobile operators and device manufacturers.
