The first edition of ACADEMIAE – Youth Art Biennale took place from July 1st to October 30th, 2016. It was hosted in an old fortress , in South Tyrol / Italy, converted into a museum.

The exhibition showed the works of 35 young artists coming from 11 of the best Art Academies across Europe. The artists and their respective works have been selected by their professors/mentors together with the curators of the Biennale. Everyone was invited for some days to set up the exhibition, work, debate and live together.

Students from the Art and Design Faculty of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano have been selected to document this “live happening”. The present publication is about this work: it recounts the team spirit and willingness of the participants, their passion, the energy of every artist, the sensation of being part of a huge event that overcomes all barriers of language, culture and history.

Tutti invitati e presenti a Franzensfeste, per alcuni giorni hanno lavorato, discusso e vissuto insieme per preparare collettivamente l’esposizione. Questa pubblicazione vuole documentare e raccontare quei giorni di allestimento, l’energia creativa che ne è scaturita, lo spirito partecipativo che ha accumunato i protagonisti, la forte sensazione di essere partecipi di un grande evento artistico che superava ogni confine culturale e linguistico.

Von Juli bis Oktober 2016 fand in der spektakulären Kulisse der Festung Franzensfeste die erste ACADEMIAE - Youth Art Biennale statt. 35 junge KunststudentInnen aus 11 der renommiertesten Kunstakademien Europas haben daran teilgenommen. Ihre Professoren haben zusammen mit den Kuratorinnen der Biennale signifikante Werke ausgewählt.

Die StudentInnen haben mit großer Begeisterung die Ausstellung aufgebaut und die Festung eine Woche lang mit viel Diskussionsstoff belebt. Diese Publikation dokumentiert die spannenden Tagen des Ausstellungsaufbaues, die kreative Energie und die Gemeinsamkeit, die sich in der Festung entwickelt hat. Alle Beteiligten hatten den Eindruck, Teil einer großen Kunstveranstaltung zu sein, die weder kulturelle noch sprachliche Grenzen kennt.

Valeria Burgio: In short, to start off with, what are your roles in this project?

Patrizia Spadafora: I’m the president of the ArtintheAlps Association, run by a group of people animated by their love for art: entrepreneurs, intellectuals, people who work in the world of culture. Geographically, these people live and work between Trentino, South Tyrol and the south of Austria. We believe that a cross-border cooperation is very important as it creates an opening towards northern Europe. For this reason we received the patronage of the Euroregion Euregio and we started with the idea of valorising both local and international artists, encouraging mutual exchange and stimulating a meeting that is profitable for both.

Paolo Berloffa: I am one of the members of the Association and I took on the role of artistic director of the Academiae event.

The area from Innsbruck to Trento involving ArtintheAlps is not only a geographical area, but a cultural area with many affinities. ArtintheAlps tends to valorise this common culture and transfer it towards Europe. Conversely, it wants to bring Europe towards these areas. To have and to exploit a specific and unique identity does not mean closing in upon oneself, but rather opening up to international flows. Academiae was conceived to speak the languages of art, which are universal, at a time when the world and Europe are under great pressure and tend to close in upon themselves. We decided not to focus on mature artists, but on young people who have not yet approached the art market and therefore have not yet been affected by its contamination. They are free to experiment. We seek innovation and creativity, that can be referred to as “lateral thinking,” a way of responding to contemporary queries that go beyond customary schemes and propose hypotheses on the future. For us, Academiae is a view on the future.

Kuno Prey: It is not by chance that this project was conceived in South Tyrol, a thoroughfare area, where traces are left by both those who travel North and those who travel South. Nowadays, young people no longer have the weight of the past on their shoulders, but they are like sponges that absorb all possible inputs and then create new ones. They can easily retouch and rework what has been before.

PB: It sounds like one of the classic speeches by local politicians talking about South Tyrol as a crossroads between the North and South, but that is what it actually is. Those travelling from north to south in Europe, have always passed through these lands. A kind of intermediation takes place here and we must have the ability to grasp the fundamental aspects from those passing through. Young people are those most capable of capturing the signals and re-processing them.

Valeria Burgio: in this regard, if young people have no inhibition towards the past and tend towards the future, what, in your opinion, should their relationship be with the present, with current affairs and, therefore, with the political-social problems we are experiencing? In this sense, the Fortress assumes a symbolic role as it is on the border, a defence mechanism and bastion site against a hypothetical foreigner. Do young people have to take on the responsibility of the present they are living, or can they afford not to take an interest as they are projected towards the future?

KP: In my opinion, they must perceive and suffer contemporary situations in order to move on.

A designer who makes the same juicer over and over again, as others have and continue to make, would be making a huge mistake. On the contrary, he should expand the field and ask himself other questions about what a citrus fruit is and what it means; he should squeeze on and drink it. Obviously, one has to know something about the history of similar products: I can appreciate Juicy Salif by Philippe Starck, and in fact I learned how to use it, because squeezing citrus fruit makes a marvellous show, even if I cannot use it to make juice in the morning for the whole family. Then, if you think about it, you wonder if it’s worth spending 48 euro to have one and, above all, using so many resources to manufacture it.

Anyway, young people who want to become designers must read the contemporary world attentively, and suffer it so that they can react adequately.

PB: The idea is not simply to invite students from the faculty of design and arts to work for Academiae, but to have the Bolzano University as an ongoing partner that is an expression of the territory. Academiae only works if there is an osmosis in the territory too. So having the Bolzano University as a partner is a structural and strategic decision.

KP: The Civic Gallery exhibition was organised specifically to continue talking about the exhibition beyond the exhibition, after its closure, to raise awareness within the territory with respect to an experience of aperture and communication with the citizens who did not have the opportunity to come to the Fortress last summer. As an institution, we can be a partner to fill in the gaps between one biennial and another. The work is aimed at the youngsters directly involved, but also to the territory, we have to consider not only those who come from away, but also those who live, study and work here.

PS: the collaboration with the university not only foresees the involvement of art students, but also communication students who can work on the visual display of the exhibition, on social media, on the catalogue. There are several courses that can be involved in a practical experience of such a complex organisation. That is why we have already started talking to the university dean to establish a framework agreement that aims to involve students in a practical experience. We are offering a field experience to those who study and work in the academic field.

Valeria Burgio: You have already mentioned the relationship between academy, lecturer and students. In this regard, I would like to read together Bernard Rüdiger’s very decisive words used in the exhibition catalogue and ask you for your thoughts: “A good school is immediately recognisable for the fact that it produces young artists who are very different from one another. A bad school produces clones”.

PB: In spite of the name, Academiae strives to be anything but academic. We do not seek to achieve a stereotype situation, otherwise the visitor would find no inspiration. It would be like finding all the same products lined up like in a supermarket. Creative strengths can indicate different solutions at a time when Europe has realised that by following the same old paths, it is unable to give the right answers and emerge from a deadlock situation.

KP: As a university, this is yet another reason why we have every interest in following this project.

It boosts and increases in international exchange at almost no cost. We act as local hosts here, and we are bestowed with the gift of getting to know lecturers and young artists. We will meet professors who are internationally recognised artists, and maybe we can invite them to stay a few more days and work at the university with our students.

PS: it is also an opportunity for the art galleries seeking new talents. They will be offered a selection of artists who have not yet entered the market circuits and whose works they may decide to promote.

PB: with Academiae, Bolzano can become an important centre for young contemporary art, a platform where, among other, it is possible to compare the goals and the criteria of academic teaching. To be in the centre of Europe with the participation of everyone. All said and done, it was the French and the British who invented modern mountaineering. Valeria Burgio: In breve, per iniziare, quali sono i vostri ruoli all’interno di questo progetto?

Patrizia Spadafora: Sono presidente dell’Associazione ArtintheAlps Verein, cui partecipa un gruppo di persone animate dall’amore per l’arte: imprenditori, intellettuali, persone che operano nella cultura. Geograficamente, queste persone vivono e lavorano tra il Trentino, l’Alto Adige e il sud dell’Austria. Riteniamo infatti che sia importante una collaborazione transfrontaliera che porti a un’apertura verso il nord Europa. Abbiamo avuto per questo motivo il patrocinio dell’ Euroregione Euregio e siamo partiti con l’idea di valorizzare sia gli artisti locali sia quelli internazionali, favorendo lo scambio reciproco e stimolando un incontro che sia proficuo per entrambi.

Paolo Berloffa: io sono uno dei soci dell’Associazione e ho assunto il compito di direttore artistico della manifestazione Academiae.

La zona da Innsbruck sino a Trento che coinvolge ArtintheAlps non è solo un'area geografica, ma un'area culturale con molte affinità. ArtintheAlps tende a valorizzare questa cultura comune e a portarla verso l'Europa. Viceversa, vuole portare l'Europa verso queste aree. Avere e valorizzare un'identità specifica e unica, non significa infatti chiudersi in sé stessi, ma piuttosto aprirsi ai flussi internazionali. Academiae nasce per parlare i linguaggi dell’arte, che sono universali, in un momento in cui il mondo e l’Europa sono sottoposti a grandi pressioni e tendono a chiudersi. Abbiamo deciso di focalizzarci non sugli artisti maturi, ma sui giovani, che non sono ancora entrati nel mercato dell’arte e quindi non risentono ancora delle sue contaminazioni. Sono liberi di sperimentare. Cerchiamo l'innovazione e la creatività, quello che può essere chiamato “pensiero laterale”, un modo di rispondere alle domande del contemporaneo che esuli da schemi consueti e proponga ipotesi sul futuro. Per noi Academiae è uno sguardo sul futuro.

Kuno Prey: Non è secondario che questa iniziativa nasca in Alto Adige, una zona di passaggio, dove lascia tracce sia chi va verso nord, sia chi va verso sud. Oggi i giovani non hanno più su di sé il peso del passato, ma sono come delle spugne che assorbono tutti i possibili input, per poi crearne di nuovi. Possono con leggerezza ritoccare e rielaborare quello che c'è stato prima.

PB: sembra uno dei classici della narrazione dei politici locali parlare dell'Alto Adige come luogo di congiunzione tra nord e sud, però è proprio la realtà. Chi andava da nord a sud in Europa, è sempre passato per queste terre. Qui avviene una specie di intermediazione e noi dobbiamo avere la capacità di cogliere da chi passa le cose fondamentali.

I giovani sono quelli più in grado di captare i segnali e rielaborarli.

Valeria Burgio: proprio a questo proposito, se i giovani non hanno inibizione verso il passato e tendono verso il futuro, quale deve essere secondo voi la relazione con il presente, con l'attualità e quindi anche con i problemi politico-sociali che stiamo vivendo? In questo senso, il luogo di Fortezza assume un ruolo simbolico proprio in quanto luogo di confine, di difesa, di baluardo contro un presunto straniero. I giovani devono assumersi la responsabilità del presente che stanno vivendo, o possono disinteressarsene in quanto già proiettati verso il futuro?

KP: secondo me devono percepire e soffrire il contemporaneo per andare avanti. Un designer che facesse e rifacesse sempre lo stesso spremiagrumi, come già hanno fatto e stanno facendo altri, farebbe un errore. Piuttosto, dovrebbe allargare il campo e porsi altre domande rispetto a cosa è che cosa e significa un agrume, provare a spremerlo e consumarlo. Ovviamente, bisogna conoscere cosa è stato fatto prima: io posso apprezzare Juicy Salif di Philippe Starck, e infatti ho imparato ad usarlo, perché è una bellissima messa in scena del gesto dello spremere un agrume, anche se non posso adoperarlo per fare la spremuta la mattina a tutta la famiglia. Poi, allargando lo sguardo, ti chiedi se vale la pena spendere 48 euro per averne uno e soprattutto usare tante risorse per fabbricarlo.

Comunque i giovani che vogliono fare i designer, devono leggere con tanta attenzione il contemporaneo, patirlo, così che poi possano reagire adeguatamente.

PS: Devono avere coscienza critica ed essere informati. A livello di partecipazione, curiosità, coinvolgimento, è fondamentale che anche

KP: questo perché voi non li avete portati a Parigi, a Londra, a Vienna, in città piene di stimoli.

PB: Il confronto a quel punto è stato inevitabile, perché si sono trovati chiusi insieme in una stanza. Mi ricordo i loro

PS: La mostra fotografica documenta proprio questa settimana degli allestimenti, che è stata come una live-performance all’interno dell’esposizione stessa. Sono nati dei conflitti, ma soprattutto occasioni di scambio. Non a caso, una studentessa di Brera andrà a fare il suo master a Lione. Quest'apertura, questa conoscenza di altre metodologie di educazione, ha spinto molti studenti ad aprire i propri

Valeria Burgio: Un effetto Erasmus. Una curiosità per il futuro: continuerete a coinvolgere solo scuole europee o pensate anche di guardare ad altri continenti?

KP: certo, l’aver presentato le singole scuole avrebbe permesso una lettura molto più semplice.

Terrete qualcuna delle accademie che hanno già partecipato o cambierete interlocutori per la prossima Biennale?

Invece provare a capire il discorso delle curatrici e costruire tu stesso il legame tra le singole opere, ti dà molto più spazio di azione nella fruizione della mostra, ma devi essere disposto a metterci del tuo e non voler essere un visitatore passivo.

PS: qualche Accademia verrà confermata, anche se l’impostazione generale è quella di proporre ogni volta nuove Accademie con nuovi professori, e nominare un nuovo curatore. Per quanto riguarda l’apertura oltreoceano, abbiamo avuto una richiesta di partecipazione da parte di CalArt , la più importante Accademia americana, dove per esempio ha insegnato per molto tempo John Baldessari. Si parte

PB: L'idea non è solo di invitare studenti della facoltà di design e arti a lavorare per Academiae, ma di avere l'università di Bolzano come partner stabile perché espressione del territorio. Academiae funziona soltanto se anche sul territorio avviene un'osmosi. Quindi avere l'università di Bolzano come partner è una decisione strutturale e strategica.

KP: La mostra in Galleria Civica è stata organizzata proprio per continuare a parlare della mostra oltre la mostra, dopo la sua chiusura, per sensibilizzare il territorio rispetto a un’esperienza di apertura e per comunicarla ai cittadini che non hanno avuto occasione di venire a fortezza l’estate scorsa. Noi come istituzione possiamo essere partner per colmare questo momento di pausa, di vuoto tra una biennale e l’altra. Il lavoro serve ai giovani direttamente coinvolti, ma anche al territorio, bisogna pensare non solo a chi viene da fuori, ma anche a chi vive, studia e lavora qua.

PS: la collaborazione con l'università prevede non solo il coinvolgimento degli studenti di arte, ma anche di studenti di comunicazione che possano lavorare sul visual display della mostra, sui social media, sul catalogo. Sono vari corsi che possono essere coinvolti in un’esperienza pratica di un’organizzazione così complessa. Appunto per questo abbiamo già iniziato a dialogare con il presidente dell'università per fare un accordo quadro per il coinvolgimento degli studenti in un’esperienza pratica. A chi studia e lavora in ambito accademico, offriamo un’esperienza sul campo.

Valeria Burgio: Avete già accennato al rapporto tra accademia, docente e allievi. A questo proposito, mi piacerebbe rileggervi le parole molto decise di Bernard Rüdiger nel catalogo della mostra e chiedervi cosa ne pensate: “A good school is immediately recognizable for the fact that it produces young artists who are very different one from another. A bad school produces clones”.

PB: A dispetto del nome, Academiae vuol essere tutto fuorché accademica. Non cerchiamo un discorso stereotipato, altrimenti il visitatore non troverebbe alcuno spunto. Sarebbe come trovare prodotti tutti uguali allineati come al supermarket. Le forze creative possono indicare soluzioni diverse in un momento storico in cui l'Europa ha capito che seguendo sempre le stesse strade non riesce a dare le rispose giuste e a uscire dalle impasse. Molto spesso i giovani sono molto più avanti dei politici, hanno fatto l’Erasmus vivendo in città estere e sono molto più europei.

Il loro approccio rispetto al mondo esterno è molto più fluido.

PS: questa nostra esperienza si colloca perfettamente in questa idea dell’Erasmus, sperando che il mondo futuro non sia quello dei confini.

KP: Anche per questo, come università, abbiamo tutto l'interesse a seguire questa iniziativa. È un incremento degli scambi internazionali a costo quasi zero. Noi qui fungiamo da locali che ospitano, e ci viene fatto un regalo nel poter conoscere docenti e giovani artisti. Abbiamo a disposizione dei professori riconosciuti a livello internazionale come artisti, e magari possiamo invitarli per farli stare qualche giorno in più per farli lavorare in facoltà con i nostri studenti.

PS: è un'opportunità anche per le gallerie d’arte, che fanno ricerca di nuovi talenti. Gli si offre una selezione di artisti che non sono ancora

ArtintheAlps und die Fakultät für Design und Künste - unibz - ein Interview mit P. Berloffa, K. Prey und P. Spadafora von Valeria Burgio Valeria Burgio: Können Sie zur Einführung kurz erklären, welche Rolle Sie bei diesem Projekt haben?

Patrizia Spadafora: Ich bin die Vorsitzende des Vereins ArtintheAlps, in welchem sich eine Gruppe von Kunstliebhabern zusammengefunden hat: Unternehmer, Intellektuelle, Kulturschaffende. Geografisch gesehen, leben und arbeiten diese Personen zwischen Trient, Südtirol und Südösterreich. Wir halten eine grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit, die sich in Richtung Nordeuropa öffnet, für sehr wichtig.

Unter der Schirmherrschaft der Europaregion Tirol-Südtirol-Trentino arbeiten wir mit dem Ziel, sowohl einheimische als auch internationale Künstler miteinander in Kontakt kommen zu lassen, um einen gegenseitigen Austausch und ein für alle Beteiligten fruchtbares Zusammentreffen zu fördern.

Paolo Berloffa: Ich bin Mitglied des Vereins und Intendant der Veranstaltung Academiae. Der Raum zwischen Innsbruck und Trient, den wir mit ArtintheAlps abdecken, weist nicht nur geografisch, sondern auch kulturell viele Gemeinsamkeiten auf.

ArtintheAlps möchte ebendiese Gemeinsamkeiten aufwerten und für Europa zugänglich machen. Umgekehrt soll aber auch Europa hierher gebracht werden. Eine spezifische und einzigartige Identität zu haben und diese aufzuwerten bedeutet nicht, sich abzusondern, sondern vielmehr, sich internationalen Einflüssen zu öffnen. Academiae wurde ins Leben gerufen, um in einer Zeit, in der die Welt und Europa großem Druck ausgesetzt sind und zur Abkapselung neigen, in der Universalsprache der Kunst zu kommunizieren. Wir haben beschlossen, uns nicht auf reife Künstler, sondern auf junge Menschen zu konzentrieren, die den Kunstmarkt noch nicht erobert haben und deshalb noch nicht von ihm beeinflusst sind. Sie können frei experimentieren. Wir suchen Innovation und Kreativität, gewissermaßen Querdenker auf der Suche nach Antworten auf die Fragen unserer Zeit - mit Perspektiven für die Zukunft, abseits der gewohnten Schemata. Für uns ist Academiae ein Blick in die Zukunft.

Kuno Prey: Es ist kein Zufall, dass diese Initiative ihren Ursprung in Südtirol hat, einem Durchreisegebiet, in dem Reisende in Richtung Norden und Süden ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Heute müssen junge Menschen nicht mehr die Bürde der Geschichte tragen, sondern können wie ein Schwamm alle möglichen Einflüsse aufnehmen, um neue zu schaffen. Sie können leichten Herzens Altes aufgreifen und neu bearbeiten.

PB: Es hört sich nach einer der klassischen Redensarten der lokalen Politiker an, wenn man über Südtirol als eine Verbindung zwischen Nord und Süd spricht. Aber genau das ist es. Wer sich in Europa historisch vom Norden in den Süden begab, reiste immer durch diese Gegend. Hier ereignet sich eine Art Vermittlung, und es muss uns gelingen, von denjenigen, die durchreisen, das Wesentliche zu erfassen. Junge Menschen können die Zeichen besser erkennen und aufarbeiten.

Valeria Burgio: Und genau das ist der Punkt: Welche Anknüpfungspunkte gibt es Ihrer Meinung nach zur Gegenwart, zu aktuellen Themen und damit zu unseren politisch-sozialen Fragen, wenn die jungen Menschen sich nicht von der Vergangenheit einschüchtern lassen, sondern in die Zukunft schauen? In diesem Sinne nimmt die Festung eine symbolische Rolle ein, und zwar genau deswegen, weil es sich um einen Grenzort, einen Verteidigungsbau und einen Schutzwall gegen Eindringlinge aus der Fremde handelt. Müssen junge Menschen für die Gegenwart, in der sie leben, Verantwortung übernehmen, oder können sie sie ignorieren, da sie bereits auf die Zukunft ausgerichtet sind?

KP: Meiner Meinung nach müssen sie die Gegenwart wahrnehmen und diese auch erleiden, um weiterzukommen. Ein Designer, der stets die gleiche Zitrusfruchtpresse entwirft, so wie es die anderen schon immer gemacht haben und machen werden, würde einen Fehler begehen. Er sollte vielmehr seinen Horizont erweitern und sich andere Fragen stellen, Fragen nach dem Wesen und der Bedeutung einer Zitrusfrucht, er müsste sie auspressen und verzehren.

Selbstverständlich muss man auch etwas darüber wissen, was vorher gemacht wurde: Ich kann

KP: Als ich von dieser Ausstellung erfahren habe, hat mich fasziniert, dass fünfunddreißig

KP: Auch deshalb haben wir als Universität Interesse, diese Initiative zu verfolgen. Es handelt sich dabei um eine Steigerung des internationalen Austauschs mit Kosten, die gegen Null gehen.

PB: Mit Academiae kann Bozen zu einem wichtigen Zentrum für die junge, zeitgenössische Kunst werden, zu einer Platt-

demiae auch auf der Organisationsebene zu unterstützen. Bisher haben wir mit unserer kleinen

form für den Vergleich der Ziele und Kriterien des akademischen Lehrstils. Im Zentrum Europas, mit der Beteiligung

Dokumentation einen ansehnlichen Beitrag geleistet: Sie erforderte Einsatz, und die Studie-

aller. Vergessen wir nicht, dass Franzosen und Engländer die Begründer des modernen Alpinismus waren, nicht

Stefania Zanetti und Andrea Sebastianelli, zwei Studenten, die sich besonders bei der Herstellung von Fotos und Videos hervorgetan haben, die Chance gegeben, sich mit anderen jungen Menschen und anderen Disziplinen auseinanderzusetzen.

PB: Unsere Idee war nicht nur, Studierende der Fakultät für Design und Künste einzuladen, um für Academiae zu arbeiten, sondern auch, die Universität Bozen als einen festen Partner zu gewinnen, da sie Ausdruck der Region ist. Academiae funktioniert nur, wenn auch vor Ort ein Austausch erfolgt. Die Universität Bozen als Partner zu haben, ist eine strukturelle und strategische Entscheidung.

KP: Die Ausstellung in der Stadtgalerie wurde organisiert, damit die Ausstellung auch nach ihrer Schließung weiter im Gespräch bleibt, um die Region für die Öffnung zu sensibilisieren und die Initiative jenen Bürgern vorzustellen, die keine Möglichkeit hatten, die Ausstellung im vergangenen Sommer zu besuchen. Wir als Institution können Partner sein, um diesen Augenblick der Pause, der Leere zwischen einer Biennale und der nächsten, zu überbrücken. Von der Arbeit profitieren nicht nur die direkt beteiligten jungen Künstler, sondern auch das Einzugsgebiet.

Dabei darf man nicht nur an diejenigen Menschen denken, die von außerhalb kommen, sondern auch an all jene, die hier leben, studieren und arbeiten.

PS: Die Zusammenarbeit mit der Universität sieht neben der Mitarbeit der Kunststudenten auch jene von Studierenden der visuellen Kommunikation vor, die am Visual Display der Ausstellung, der Präsenz in den sozialen Medien und am Katalog mitarbeiten können.

Es gibt verschiedene Fachrichtungen, die in die praktische Arbeit an einer solch komplexen Organisation eingebunden werden können.

Gerade deshalb haben wir bereits mit dem Präsidenten der Universität gesprochen, um einen Rahmenvertrag abzuschließen, der allen Studenten wertvolle Praxiserfahrung ermöglicht.

Valeria Burgio: Sie haben schon von den Synergien zwischen Schulen, Dozenten und Studierenden gesprochen. Diesbezüglich möchte ich Ihnen die sehr entschiedenen Worte von Bernhard Rüdiger aus dem Ausstellungskatalog vorlesen und Sie um Ihre Stellungnahme bitten: „A good school is immediately recognizable for the fact that it produces young artists who are very different one from another. A bad school produces clones.”

PB: Anders als ihr Name vermuten lässt, ist Academiae durchaus keine Akademie. Wir suchen keine stereotypierten Aussagen, denn ansonsten würde der Besucher keine Ideen vorfinden. Es wäre, als würden wie im Supermarkt immer die gleichen Produkte angeboten. Kreative Kräfte können verschiedene Lösungen aufzeigen. Und zwar in einem historischen Augenblick, in dem Europa verstanden hat, dass es nicht möglich ist, die richtigen Antworten zu geben und Engpässe zu überwinden, wenn man immer nur nach demselben Schema vorgeht. Sehr oft denken junge Menschen weitaus fortschrittlicher als Politiker. Sie haben dank Erasmus ausländische Städte besucht und fühlen sich mehr als Europäer. Die Art, wie sie auf die äußere Welt zugehen, ist weitaus fließender.

PS: Unsere Erfahrung passt perfekt zur Erasmus-Idee - in der Hoffnung, dass die Welt der Zukunft keine Grenzen haben wird.

An exhibition about the exhibition Is an exhibition just an exhibition or can it be another exhibition that illustrates its secrets? Is it therefore the connections between the invention and the set-up, between those who designed it and those, on the other hand, who viewed it. Because, as is often the case in the art world, there is never a precise boundary between the work in itself and how the “in itself” of the work is displayed to those who observe it. Stefania Zanetti and Andrea Sebastianelli walked straight into these spatio-temporal meanders at the Academiae Youth Art Biennial. Where the space was the Franzensfeste Fortress, and the time was the days spent in the impassively rough corridors where youths from all over Europe attempted to cohabitate with the dizzy experience of confronting themselves with one of their works that was suddenly talking a new language, one to be discovered. Because it is one thing painting a picture in one’s room and watching it grow in a never-changing environment, and quite another to discover it suddenly almost lost among crumbling walls in the midst of other works, other paintings, searching for silent connections.

“The context was the first theme - says Stefania Zanetti also made of people not just art”. And Andrea Sebastianelli: “As soon as I arrived I realised something: that, above all, I was most interested in the space. The Fort, its lights and its shadows. The walls and the works still closed inside the crates, immobile and waiting. Stefania and Andrea are two Lub students, the free university of Bolzano. The former is from Trento, the latter from Chieti. They spend their days in the Design faculty laboratories, constantly experimenting the often invisible relations between forms and functions, between space and materials. They visited the Fortress last summer, to document with images and videos the birth of something that was not yet there: an exhibition set up in a fortress and not in a standard art gallery.

Designed with the young graduates of the European art academies in mind, with the presence of their professors, also artists in their own right. Here are the meanders, the cross-roads without a clear view. “There was a palpable tension in the air - Stefania remembers - yet positive and totally unique”. Andrea describes it as “a strong friction that made me aware of an energy that was very much pres-

ent at that time. Something that went beyond the ritual of the set-up operations. “The primary idea, imagined

by ArtintheAlps, the organisers of Academiae, was to document an event. To do it, however, through the eyes and the optical instruments of two students, like the students who were exhibiting their works, accompanied by their Professor at Lub Mr. Kuno Prey, just as many European teachers in turn accompanied their exhibiting artists.

“It was clear from the very start that it would not simply be a photographic documentation - remembers Stefania Zanetti - because the iterations were many and complex.

Those between the works and such an extraordinary exhibition space, those between the students and the works and finally between themselves and the professors”. That this experience had gone way beyond the documentary aspect was also clearly perceived on the day of the inauguration of this “exhibition about the exhibition”, which took place a few months after the Academiae, in the Bolzano Civic Gallery in Piazza Domenicani. The two authors had almost taken on the role of explorers, up there at the Fortress. “What did I decide to photograph? I simply focused on observation, - says Stefania - and I took my time. I used my lens to observe the movements from the inside, what made me curious where the pauses people made, their faces intent on scrutinising the works, and then establishing a connection with what they saw around them. For both of them, it was like the documenting task entrusted to them had suddenly vanished, and they started to perceive that something was coming to life, in its own right and its own strength. Being carried by the waves during the set-up days. “In the videos I was looking for stories - says Andrea - I was trying to create a storytelling, rather than a capturing a single moment. It was work in progress, just like what I was doing. Then came the assembly, the tension of the operational moment, the observation of things that after a while started to take on a different depth”.

And hence a detail emerged, instead of the initial scheme.

A detail that, given its power, stole the whole scene, clearly disregarding any form of priority. This led to the boundary between the work of art and the documentary work became ever more ephemeral, as the latter became a work 41

in itself, boasting its own aesthetic and creative autonomy.

“It’s true - they both agree - the boundary became increasingly more subtle and the creative space clearly gained the upper hand. So that the first observation of the artists and their works, after a while, transposed into images, became something totally unique. As was unique the entity of the Bolzano exhibition documenting the Fortress. These are questions that Stefania Zanetti and Andrea Sebastianelli face every day at University, each with their own form of sensitivity. Because, all said and done, what is design, if not a continuous living and reliving of the “limes “between creativity and function, between an object and the inner soul of the same that becomes aesthetic. “Design also interprets the world when it creates tools to live in it” says Andrea. Stefania went on to comment: “There is always a process behind a creation. Also in the creation of a work

Dove lo spazio era il forte di Fortezza e il tempo sono state le giornate sospese tra i corridoi implacabilmente ruvidi dove ragazzi di tutta Europa provavano a convivere con la vertigine del confrontarsi con una loro opera che d'improvviso si trovava a parlare una lingua nuova, tutta da scoprire. Perché un conto è dipingere un quadro nella propria stanza e vederlo crescere in un luogo sempre uguale, un altro e scoprirla d'improvviso quasi persa tra mura sdrucite e in mezzo ad altre opere, ad altri quadri, in cerca di mute connessioni.

“Il contesto è stato il primo tema - dice Stefania Zanetti - fatto anche di persone non solo di arte”. E Andrea Sebastianelli: “Appena sono arrivato ho capito una cosa: che mi interessava lo spazio, prima di tutto. Il forte, le sue luci e le ombre. I muri e le opere ancora chiuse nelle casse, ferme ad aspettare”. Stefania e Andrea sono due studenti della Lub, la libera università di Bolzano. La prima è di Trento, il secondo di Chieti. And it is always fascinating to wonder - they add - how the artist creates his concept through his research and how the designer creates his. So, in the end, the exhibition set up by Andrea and Stefania for Academiae was both the documentation of an event and the portrayal of an emotion.

That of the artists at the Fort and that of the two of them who lived the experience in symbiosis, but from another stage of the theatre of life.

di Paolo Campostrini nuamente le relazioni spesso invisibili tra forme e funzioni, tra spazio e materiali. Sono saliti al forte, l'estate scorsa, per documentare in immagini e in video la nascita di qualcosa che ancora non c'era: una mostra allestita in una fortezza e non in una comune galleria d’arte. Pensata per i giovani diplomandi della accademie d'arte europee, con l’ulteriore presenza dei loro professori, a loro volta artisti. Ecco i tornanti, gli incroci senza visuale certa. “Si avvertiva una tensione palpabile - ricorda Stefania - ma positiva e comunque inedita”. Andrea la definisce “una forte frizione che mi faceva percepire un'energia molto presente in quei momenti. E questo al di là della ritualità dell'allestimento”. L'idea primigenia, immaginata da ArtintheAlps, gli organizzatori di Academiae, era quello di documentare un evento. Di farlo però attraverso gli occhi e gli strumenti ottici di due studenti, come studenti erano coloro che stavano esponendo, accompagnati dal loro professore Kuno Prey della Lub, così come i docenti europei a loro volta affiancavano i loro artisti espositori. “Subito è stato chiaro che non sarebbe stata solo una documentazione fotografica - ricorda Stefania Zanetti - perché le iterazioni erano molte e complesse. Quelle tra opere e lo spazio espositivo così straordinario, quelle tra studenti e opere e infine tra loro e i professori”. Che questa esperienza sia andata al di là dell'aspetto documentaristico si è percepito chiaramente anche il giorno dell'inaugurazione di questa “mostra sulla mostra”, avvenuta qualche mese dopo termi-

nata Academiae, negli spazi della Galleria civica di Bolzano, in piazza Domenicani. I due autori erano stati quasi degli esploratori, lassù a Fortezza. “Cosa decidevo di fotografare? Mi sono basata sull'osservazione - dice Stefania - e mi sono presa il mio tempo. Guardavo dentro l'obiettivo i movimenti dall'interno, mi incuriosivano le pause delle persone, i loro volti intenti ad osservare le opere e poi a mettersi in relazione con quello che vedevano intorno”. Per tutti e due era come fosse improvvisamente sparito il compito affidato loro di documentare e stesse invece formandosi la percezione di qualcosa che stava nascendo “di suo”, per forza propria. Lasciandosi andare sull'onda di quei giorni di allestimento. “Nei video ho cercato storie - racconta Andrea - tentavo mettere in piedi una storytelling, invece che fermare un momento. Erano lavori in corso, come quello che stavo facendo io. E poi il montaggio, la tensione del momento operativo, il rivedere cose che dopo un po' acquisivano altre profondità”. E così emergeva un dettaglio, invece che lo schema iniziale. Un dettaglio che, per forza sua, si prendeva tutta la scena, infischiandosene così delle priorità. Così facendo diventava sempre più labile il confine tra opera d'arte e opera documentale, divenendo quest'ultima sempre più opera in se, dotata di una sua autonomia estetica e creativa. “È vero - dicono tutti e due - il confine si faceva sempre più sottile e lo spazio creativo prendeva il sopravvento. Così che la prima osservazione degli artisti e delle loro opere, dopo un po', trasposta in immagini, è diventata inedita”. Inedita è stata anche la sostanza della mostra bolzanina, quella che documentava Fortezza. Sono questioni che Stefania Zanetti e Andrea Sebastianelli ognuno con

la propria sensibilità, affrontano ogni giorno in facoltà.

Perché, in fondo, che cos'è il design se non un continuo passare e ripassare il “limes” tra creatività e funzione, tra oggetto e anima interiore dello stesso che diventa estetica.

“Anche il design interpreta il mondo, nel momento in cui crea degli strumenti nel quale viverci” dice Andrea. E Stefania: “C'è sempre un processo dietro la creazione. Anche nella creazione di un'opera d'arte. Arte e design comunicano sempre più strettamente, a volte con successo a volte no.

Ed è sempre affascinante riflettere - aggiungono - come l'artista arrivi al concetto attraverso la sua ricerca e come ci arriva il designer attraverso la sua”. Così, alla fine, la mostra allestita da Andrea e Stefania per Academiae è stata sia una documentazione di un evento ma pure il racconto di una emozione. Quella degli artisti al forte e quella di loro due che l'hanno vissuta in simbiosi, ma da un altro palco del teatro della vita.

Wie es so oft in der Kunst geschieht, gibt es keine klare Abgrenzung zwischen dem Werk an und für sich und dessen Verständnis durch den Besucher. Stefania Zanetti und Andrea Sebastianelli haben sich auf eine Entdeckungsreise durch Raum und Zeit der Biennale für junge Kunst Academiae begeben: Der Raum war die Festung Franzensfeste, die Zeit hingegen jene Tage in den rauen Gängen der Festung, in denen junge Künstler aus ganz Europa zusammenleben und sich mit ihrem eigenen Werk und

seiner völlig neuen, unerforschten Ausdrucksform auseinandersetzen mussten – denn es ist bei weitem nicht dasselbe, in einem immer gleichen Raum an einem Bild zu malen und es wachsen zu sehen, oder es urplötzlich inmitten alter Mauern und anderer Werke, auf der Suche nach stummen Beziehungen, wiederentdecken zu müssen. „Der Kontext war unser erstes Thema: Nicht nur Kunst, sondern auch Menschen", so Stefania Zanetti. Andrea Sebastianelli fügt hinzu: „Gleich zu Beginn wusste ich: Mich interessierte vor allem der Raum. Die Festung mit ihrem Licht und ihren Schatten. Die Gemäuer und die Werke, die noch in ihren Kisten verpackt lagen und warteten. “Die beiden sind Studierende an der Freien Universität Bozen.

„In den Videos suchte ich Geschichten, ich versuchte, einen Erzählstrang aufzubauen, und nicht nur Momente festzuhalten. Die Arbeit der Menschen, die ich aufnahm, ähnelte in gewisser Weise meiner. Dann kamen der Schnitt, die Spannung bei der Aufarbeitung und der Sichtung von Elementen, die nach und nach eine andere Bedeutung und Tiefe annahmen. “Was ursprünglich als reiner Überblick geplant war, wurde nach und nach zur liebevollen Betrachtung einzelner Details, die sich in den Vordergrund drängten und aus eigener Kraft die Hauptrolle übernahmen. Die Grenze zwischen Kunst und Dokumentation verblasste, je mehr der Foto- und Videobericht einen eigenen ästhetischen und kreativen Charakter entwickelte. „Die kreative Seite überwog schließlich", bestätigen die beiden. „Aus der reinen Beobachtung der Künstler und ihrer Werke wurde ein eigenständiges Werk, etwas Neues. “Somit wurde auch die Veranstaltung in Franzensfeste im Rahmen der Bozner Ausstellung zu etwas Neuem. Dies sind Themen, mit denen sich Stefania Zanetti und Andrea Sebastianelli Tag für Tag an ihrer Fakultät auseinandersetzen: Was ist Design schließlich anderes als ein ständiges Ausloten der Grenze zwischen Kreativität und Funktionalität, zwischen dem Objekt und seiner Seele, der Ästhetik. „Auch Design interpretiert die Welt, wann immer es Instrumente für das Alltagsleben schafft", so Andrea. Stefania meint dazu: „Hinter jeder Kreation steht ein Prozess – auch bei der Schaffung eines Kunstwerks. Design und Kunst verschmelzen immer weiter, wenn auch nicht immer erfolgreich. Es ist stets hochinteressant, nachzuvollziehen, wie Künstler und Designer über Nachforschungen zu ihren jeweiligen Konzepten gelangen. “Die Academiae-Ausstellung von Stefania und Andrea war abschließend also nicht nur die Dokumentation eines Events, sondern vermittelte auch Gefühle: jene der Künstler in der Festung und jene der beiden Studierenden, die sie – wenn auch von einer anderen Warte aus – gewissermaßen in Symbiose miterleben durften.

Stefania stammt aus Trient, Andrea aus Chieti. An der Fakultät für Design und Künste experimentieren sie ständig mit den oft unsichtbaren Beziehungen zwischen Form und Funktion, Raum und Material. Im vergangenen Sommer dokumentierten sie in der Festung Franzensfeste mithilfe von Bildern und Videos die Entstehung von etwas völlig Neuem: Einer Ausstellung, die nicht in einer gewöhnlichen Galerie, sondern in einer Festung stattfinden sollte. Diplomanden europäischer Kunstakademien würden hier im Beisein ihrer Professoren – ihrerseits ebenfalls Künstler – ihre Werke präsentieren. Ein Projekt, das sozusagen mit einer Vielzahl unerwarteter Abzweigungen und unübersichtlicher Kreuzungen aufwartet. „Die Spannung war spürbar", erinnert sich Stefania, „aber auf jeden Fall positiv und frisch.

“Andrea beschreibt„ eine gespannte Erwartung, die mir, jenseits von der rituellen Aufbauarbeit, ein Gefühl von der Energie des Moments vermittelte. “Die ursprüngliche Idee des Vereins hinter Academiae, ArtintheAlps, war eine reine Dokumentation des Events, die, wie die ausgestellten Werke selbst, von Studenten erstellt werden sollte. Ebenso wie die Künstler von ihren Professoren begleitet wurden, stand auch Stefania und Andrea mit Kuno Prey von der unibz ein Dozent zur Seite. „Es war von Anfang an klar, dass wir nicht lediglich eine Fotostrecke produzieren würden", erinnert sich Stefania Zanetti. „Die Interaktion zwischen den Werken und dem außerordentlichen Ausstellungsraum, den Studierenden und ihren Werken und schließlich zwischen den Studierenden und ihren Dozenten war ungemein vielseitig und komplex. “Dass diese Erfahrung weit über die bloße Erstellung einer Dokumentation hinausging, wurde auch am Tag der Eröffnung dieser „Ausstellung über die Ausstellung “in der Stadtgalerie am Bozner Dominikanerplatz einige Monate nach dem Abschluss von Academiae deutlich. Die beiden Autoren waren gewissermaßen als Entdecker in der Festung unterwegs. „Was sollte ich abbilden?

Ich beschloss, mir Zeit zu nehmen und alles zu beobachten", erklärt Stefania. „Durch das Objektiv verfolgte ich Bewegungen mit. Das Innehalten der Menschen, ihre konzentrierten Gesichter beim Betrachten der Werke und bei der Auseinandersetzung mit dem, was sie in ihrer Umgebung wahrnahmen, sprachen mich besonders an. “Sowohl für Stefania als auch für Andrea rückte der Auftrag plötzlich in den Hintergrund – vielmehr hatten sie das Gefühl, in den Tagen emsiger Vorbereitung etwas Eigenes zu schaffen. Andrea:

“THROWING BALLS IN THE AIR” Christiane Rekade & Francesca Boenzi Curators of Academiae - Youth Art Biennale 2016 “It’s all your fault, you called them artists”, is what Lawrence Weiner apparently said to his friend John Baldessari, referring to the way Baldessari addresses his students.

The episode underlines a deep conviction on the part of Baldessari, considered one of the most influential teachers of our times, the belief that art cannot be taught.

Art academies are special places that do not operate in the same way as other schools or universities. With their different approaches, priorities and programs they represent a sort of “sheltered space” for young artists in which they can practice their own art, articulate and formalize their ideas and ask themselves fundamental questions about art— away from the pressures of the market and the struggle to make a living. This is a crucial moment for the development not just of the artist’s work, but also of his or her social role in contributing to a relevant and lively artistic discourse: “Indeed, the academy is perhaps one of the few remaining social spaces where one has the time at all to engage the question: What does my dream have to do with that of the others?” (Jan Verwoert).

The first ACADEMIAE Youth Art Biennale presents an exhibition devoted exclusively to the work of emerging artists, students at art academies and universities in various countries, and offers the chance to reflect on a series of questions related to artistic training, its potential and its peculiarities. Why study art? Can art be taught? What kind of an institution sets itself the task of training artists, and what does it represent? What can an artist learn?

And what can an artist teach young people aspiring to become one?

Throwing Balls in the Air creates a space for meeting and comparison of the different interests and approaches that characterize contemporary artistic practice It is not a thematic exhibition, but one that focuses on an exclusive condition: the freedom to explore subjects and techniques in an atmosphere of sharing and exchange. The exhibition is conceived as an open-ended conversation about multiple questions and themes—which emerge from the interpretation of the individual works as well as from the way the exhibition itself is structured as a dialogue.

The title of the exhibition has been borrowed from the series of photographs taken

by John Baldessari in the seventies: Throwing Four Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (1972-73) and Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get an Equilateral Triangle (1972-73) can be regarded as a comment on the artistic process, as an act of balancing characterized by experimentation that involves chance and the risk of error.

For the selection of the artists, we invited professors of eleven art schools, active in the international context and artistic debate, to recommend six students, out of whom we chose thirty-five to take part in the exhibition.

In order to establish a dialogue between them, we have put the artists’ works on display in the fourteen rooms of the Franzensfeste Fortress, working on their possible connections and on the creation of an atmosphere. We did not want the exhibition to have a rigid structure, organized into sections representing single schools or classes, but for it to represent an encounter. Thus the exhibition focuses on the works of the artists, their different conceptual and formal premises, fostering the possibility of coexistence and exchange between these different approaches, which enrich one another with new interpretations and meanings. The great potential of ACADEMIAE lies precisely in the meeting and dialogue between the artists, and between their works and the exhibition space. [ …]

To go back to John Baldessari: there is something that he likes about art academies, the fact that they can be places of exchange, where students are to meet other artists.

ACADEMIAE offers this possibility too. The collaborative mounting of the exhibition, a process in which the students took part, has been a very important part of the project. Redefining their own work in relation to that of the others and opening themselves to dialogue has been fundamental. As Boris Groys once aptly wrote on the role of the academy: “Contemporary art education is an education without rules. But so-called real life where we are subject to an endless variety of improvisations, suggestions, confusions, and catastrophes is also finally without any rules. Ultimately teaching art means teaching life.”

“THROWING BALLS IN THE AIR” Christiane Rekade & Francesca Boenzi Curatrici di Academiae - Youth Art Biennale 2016 “It’s all your fault, you called them artists” avrebbe detto Lawrence Weiner al suo amico John Baldessari, riferendosi al modo in cui Baldessari si rivolgeva ai propri studenti – chiamandoli “artisti”. L’episodio sottolinea quella che in Baldessari – considerato uno dei professori più influenti dei nostri tempi – è una forte convinzione, ovvero che l’arte non può essere insegnata.

Le accademie d’arte sono luoghi speciali, funzionano in modo diverso dalle altre scuole o università. Con i loro approcci, priorità e programmi differenti rappresentano per i giovani artisti una sorta di “spazio protetto” in cui possono esercitare la propria pratica artistica, articolare e formalizzare il proprio pensiero, porsi le fondamentali domande sull’arte – al riparo da pressioni di mercato e di sopravvivenza economica. Questo è un momento fondamentale non solo per lo sviluppo del lavoro artistico, ma anche del proprio ruolo sociale per contribuire a un discorso artistico attuale e vivace: “Indeed, the academy is perhaps one of the few remaining social spaces where one has the time at all to engage the question: What does my dream have to do with that of the others?” (Jan Verwoert) La prima edizione di ACADEMIAE presenta una mostra dedicata esclusivamente al lavoro di artisti emergenti, studenti di scuole e università internazionali, e offre la possibilità di riflettere su una serie di domande relative alla formazione artistica, il suo potenziale e le sue peculiarità. Perché studiare arte? L’arte si può insegnare? Cosa è – e cosa rappresenta –un’istituzione che si prefigge il compito di formare gli artisti? Cosa può imparare un artista? E cosa può insegnare un artista a giovani aspiranti tali?

“Throwing Balls in the Air” crea uno spazio per il confronto e l’incontro tra i diversi interessi e approcci che caratterizzano la ricerca artistica contemporanea. Non è una mostra tematica, ma si focalizza su una condizione esclusiva: la libertà di esplorare temi e tecniche in un clima di condivisione e scambio. La mostra è pensata come una conversazione aperta intorno a contenuti e tematiche molteplici – questi emergono dalla lettura dei singoli lavori così come dall’impostazione dialogica della mostra stessa.

Il titolo della mostra è preso in prestito dalle serie di fotografie realizzate da John Baldessari negli anni Settanta: Throwing Four Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (1972–1973) oppure Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get an Equilateral Triangle (1972–1973) possono essere considerati come un commento al processo artistico, come azione di bilanciamento caratterizzata dalla sperimentazione che coinvolge la casualità e il rischio di errore.

Per la selezione degli artisti, abbiamo invitato undici professori di altrettante accademie, attivi nel contesto e dibattito artistico internazionale a segnalare ciascuno sei studenti, da cui abbiamo selezionato i trentacinque partecipanti alla mostra.

Nelle stanze del Forte di Fortezza abbiamo voluto mettere in dialogo le opere degli artisti lavorando sulle loro possibili connessioni e sulla creazione di un’atmosfera. Non volevamo che la mostra avesse una struttura rigida, organizzata in stanze che rappresentassero le singole accademie o classi, ma che rappresentasse piuttosto un incontro. La mostra pone quindi al centro i lavori degli artisti, i loro diversi presupposti concettuali e formali, favorendo le possibilità di coesistenza e dialogo di questi approcci diversi, che si arricchiscono reciprocamente di letture e significati nuovi. Il grande potenziale di ACADEMIAE consiste proprio nell’incontro e nello scambio tra gli artisti, tra i loro lavori e lo spazio espositivo. [ …]

Per tornare a John Baldessari: c’è un fatto che ama delle accademie, ovvero che possano essere un luogo di scambio, dove lo studente si può confrontare con altri artisti. Anche ACADEMIAE offre questa possibilità. L’allestimento corale della mostra, condivisa con gli studenti, è stata una parte molto importante del progetto. Ridefinire il proprio lavoro in rapporto a quello degli altri e aprirsi al dialogo è stato fondamentale. Come Boris Groys ha giustamente scritto una volta sul ruolo dell’accademia: “Contemporary art education is an education without rules. But so-called real life where we are subject to an endless variety of improvisations, suggestions, confusions, and catastrophes is also finally without any rules. Ultimately teaching art means teaching life”.

“THROWING BALLS IN THE AIR” Christiane Rekade & Francesca Boenzi Kuratorinnen der Academiae - Youth Art Biennale 2016 „It’s all your fault, you called them artists – Es ist Dein Fehler, Du hast sie Künstler genannt“, soll Lawrence Weiner zu seinem Freund John Baldessari gesagt haben. Er meinte damit die Studierenden, die Baldessari konsequent als Künstlerinnen und Künstler und nicht als Kunststudent/innen bezeichnet. Diese Äußerung unterstreicht Baldessaris Haltung, dass Kunst nicht gelehrt werden kann. Und trotzdem unterrichtete Baldessari fast ein halbes Jahrhundert lang an Kunsthochschulen und gehört zu den einflussreichsten Professoren der Gegenwart.

Kunstakademien sind besondere Orte – nicht nur, weil sie nicht wie andere Ausbildungsstätten oder Universitäten programmiert werden und funktionieren können. Kunstakademien – in ihren unterschiedlichen Herangehensweisen, Schwerpunkten oder Programmen – bieten jungen Künstler/innen eine wertvolle Zeit, eine Art „geschützten Raum“, in dem sie ihre eigene Praxis erproben und sich auch die grundsätzlichen Fragen nach der Kunst stellen können – ohne dabei schon unter dem existenziellen Druck des (finanziellen) Überlebens zu stehen. Diese Zeit ist für die Entwicklung eines eigenen Werkes, aber auch für einen aktuellen und lebendigen Kunstdiskurs unersetzlich. „Die Akademie ist vielleicht überhaupt einer der wenigen verbliebenen gesellschaftlichen Räume, wo überhaupt Zeit dafür da ist, sich mit der Frage auseinanderzusetzen: Was hat mein Traum mit den anderen zu tun?“ Mit der ersten Ausgabe von ACADEMIAE wurde ein Ausstellungsformat geschaffen, das sich ausschließlich dem Schaffen von Kunststudierenden an internationalen Akademien und Hochschulen widmet. Dies eröffnete die Möglichkeit, über Fragen der künstlerischen Ausbildung, über ihr Potenzial und ihre Konditionen nachzudenken. Wie kann Kunst gelehrt werden? Kann sie überhaupt gelehrt werden? Warum Kunst studieren?

Besinnung

Oder wie? Und wann bin ich ein Künstler, eine Künstlerin? Und wie bestreite ich mein Leben als Künstler/in?

Throwing Balls In The Air reflektiert diese Überlegungen und schafft einen Raum für Begegnung und Auseinandersetzung mit den unterschiedlichsten Interessenansätzen und Herangehensweisen jüngster zeitgenössischer Kunstproduktion. Es ist keine thematische Ausstellung, sondern sie zeigt einen Zustand: die Freiheit, Techniken, Themen und Methoden zu wählen und sie in einer Gemeinschaft zu teilen und zu erproben. Die Ausstellung liest sich schließlich wie ein offenes Gespräch über viele unterschiedliche Inhalte und Themen, die sich aus der Betrachtung der einzelnen Arbeiten und ihren Bezügen innerhalb der Ausstellung ergeben.

Den Ausstellungstitel für die erste Edition von ACADEMIÆ haben wir ebenfalls John Baldessari entliehen. In den 1970er-Jahren schuf dieser eine Reihe von Fotoserien wie etwa Throwing Four Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (1972–1973) oder Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get an Equilateral Triangle (1972–1973). Diese Serien können als Kommentare zum künstlerischen Prozess gelesen werden, als ein permanenter Balanceakt, geprägt von Experimenten und Versuchen, die den Zufall sowie das Risiko des Scheiterns miteinbeziehen.

Für die Auswahl der teilnehmenden Student/innen haben wir 11 international tätige Professoren und Professorinnen von verschiedenen Kunstakademien eingeladen, uns bis zu 6 ihrer Studenten und Studentinnen zu empfehlen. Aus den vorgeschlagenen Student/innen wählten wir schließlich insgesamt 35 junge Künstlerinnen und Künstler für die Ausstellung aus.

In den 14 sich aneinanderreihenden Räumen in der Franzensfeste wollten wir diese verschiedenen Werke miteinander in einen Dialog bringen, Verbindungen kreieren und eine Atmosphäre schaffen. Die Arbeiten sollten nicht nach Hochschulen oder Klassen geordnet in verschiedenen Räumen präsentiert werden, sondern die Ausstellung sollte aus dem Zusammentreffen der Arbeiten entstehen. Im Zentrum der Ausstellung stehen die einzelnen Werke, ihre unterschiedlichen formalen und konzeptuellen Herangehensweisen und Präsentationen und ihr Zusammenspiel – die Möglichkeit, Arbeiten nebeneinanderzustellen und aus den Kombinationen andere Perspektiven auf die Arbeiten zu gewinnen. In diesem Zusammentreffen und im Austausch zwischen den jungen Künstlern, ihren Arbeiten und dem Ausstellungsort liegt für uns das Potenzial von ACADEMIAE. [ …]

Das Gute an Kunsthochschulen – um nochmals auf Baldessari zurückzukommen – sei, dass die Studenten und Studentinnen dort andere ebenfalls tätige Künstler/innen treffen.

Academiae schafft auch eine solche Möglichkeit des Zusammentreffens: Das gemeinsame Aufbauen und Installieren war ein wichtiger Teil der Ausstellung, die Konfrontation der eigenen Arbeit mit den Werken der anderen, das Definieren und Überdenken von Positionen – und in allem die Begegnung mit den anderen Künstler/innen. Oder – wie Boris Groys einmal treffend über die Rolle der Kunstakademie schrieb: ”Contemporary art education is an education without rules. About the partnership between the Faculty of Design and Art - Free University of Bolzano and the Associazione ArtintheAlps Verein

The partnership with the Associazione ArtintheAlps Verein has been for the students of the Faculty of Design and Art a unique opportunity to experiment the project-based study model that they are taught at the school. This innovative approach of teaching and learning combines practical and theoretical aspects throughout the development of the project, creating a close link with the world of production and services.

The projects encompasses complex problems requiring close critical analysis and stimulates students to research and create useful and innovative solutions autonomously. Theory is integrated with project work, the content of which is planned in relation to project topics. Project work is complemented by specialised courses and in-depth workshop courses where students can experiment and explore alternative solutions.

Courses do not consist of “classes” in a more traditional sense, but of work groups with a maximum of 20 students from various years. Due to the non-hierarchical nature of the organisation, all individual skills are enhanced and promoted.

The students, who come from all over the world, are taught in the three official languages of the Free University of Bolzano: Italian, German and English.

The teaching staff is likewise international, and comprises both teachers and designers who share their professional expertise with the students.

The courses organised by the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano provide an optimum working environment which guarantees students continuous and direct contact with the teaching staff.

The Faculty of Design and Art offers three main courses of study: The Degree Course in Design and Art - Curriculum in Design aims to educate students in the project culture as a whole. In order to achieve this objective, the course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of design, and includes work both on visual communication projects and product design.

The Degree Course in Design and Art - Curriculum in Art aims to investigate the aesthetics of the present in a course of study that takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Image (photography/video/film); Space (sculpture/installations); Interact (performance/new media); and Exhibit (visual culture/curatorship).

The Master’s Degree Course in Eco-Social Design aims to prepare students to create tangible, visible practices of eco-social change to enhance the value of local enterprises and other bodies and promote their potential in a globalised world. The course content draws on design and science in an interdisciplinary approach which engages students in a dialogue between entrepreneurship, activism, technology and craftsmanship.

Sulla collaborazione tra la Facoltà di Design e Arti - Libera Università di Bolzano e l’Associazione ArtintheAlps Verein

La collaborazione con ArtintheAlps è stata per gli studenti della Facoltà di Design e Arti un’importante occasione, perfettamente in sintonia con il modello didattico dello studio per progetti su cui si basa la facoltà. Si tratta di un modo innovativo di insegnare e apprendere, integrando nello sviluppo di un progetto aspetti pratici e teorici. Esso permette uno stretto collegamento con il mondo della produzione e dei servizi. Nei progetti si affrontano problematiche complesse che richiedono un’attenta analisi critica e stimolano gli studenti alla ricerca e alla realizzazione individuale di soluzioni utili e innovative. Al lavoro di progetto si integrano i corsi teorici, i cui contenuti sono declinati in relazione ai temi progettuali. Completano il lavoro di progetto i corsi specialistici ed i corsi di approfondimento nelle officine, nelle quali è possibile sperimentare ed esplorare soluzioni alternative.

Non ci sono “le classi”, bensì dei gruppi di lavoro con un numero massimo di 20 persone, nei quali si mescolano studenti provenienti dai vari anni di corso. Grazie ad una impostazione non gerarchica le capacità degli studenti vengono valorizzate e promosse.

Gli studenti, provenienti da tutto il mondo, studiano nelle tre lingue ufficiali della Libera Università di Bolzano: italiano, tedesco e inglese.

Il corpo docente è anch’esso internazionale. Ne fanno parte sia docenti, sia progettisti che condividono le loro esperienze professionali con gli studenti.

I corsi della Facoltà di Design e Arti della Libera Università di Bolzano offrono una situazione di lavoro ottimale che garantisce allo studente un contatto continuo e diretto con i docenti.

La Facoltà di Design e Arti offre tre corsi di studio principali: Il Corso di Laurea in Design e Arti - Curriculum in Design intende educare alla cultura del progetto nel suo complesso, proprio per questo, al suo interno, il design viene insegnato in modo interdisciplinare facendo lavorare studenti sia a progetti di comunicazione visiva che di design del prodotto.

Die Zusammenarbeit mit ArtintheAlps war für die Studierenden der Fakultät für Design und Künste eine hervorragende Möglichkeit, die gut in das Studienmodell der Fakultät passt. Dieses von mir für die unibz entwickelte Lehrmodell beruht auf dem Konzept des Projektstudiums. Es handelt sich um eine innovative Herangehensweise, die praktisches und theoretisches Lernen gleichermaßen fördert. Im Mittelpunkt steht ein enger praxisnaher Kontakt sowohl zum produzierenden Gewerbe (Industrie und Handwerk) als auch zu Unternehmen, welche Dienstleistungen erbringen. Innerhalb der Projekte geht es um komplexe Thematiken, die eine aufmerksame und kritische Analyse seitens der Studierenden erfordern. Ziel ist die Erarbeitung individueller, nützlicher, innovativer sowie nachhaltiger Lösungen.

Der Projektarbeit an die Seite gestellt sind Theorie-Kurse, deren Inhalte auf die Themen der Projekte abgestimmt sind. Eine wichtige praktische Vervollständigung erfolgt über die technischen Kurse sowie über die Arbeit in den Werkstätten der Fakultät, wo Ideen und Lösungen vor Ort in einer Vielzahl von Materialien und Techniken erprobt und realisiert werden können.

Innerhalb des Projektstudiums gibt es keine “Klassen”, sondern Arbeitsgruppen mit maximal 20 Studierenden. Ältere und jüngere Studierende ergänzen sich hier und befördern sich gegenseitig in ihren Kenntnissen, Begabungen und besonderen Interessen. Die Studierenden selbst kommen aus aller Welt und kommunizieren in den drei offiziellen Sprachen der Hochschule: Deutsch, Italienisch, Englisch.

Auch der Lehrkörper ist international zusammengesetzt und besteht aus Lehrenden theoretischer und praktischer Fächer sowie aus Gestaltern mit langjährigem Praxis-Knowhow.

Die Studiengänge der Fakultät für Design und Künste an der Freien Universität Bozen bieten optimale Studien- und Arbeitsbedingungen im überaus direkten und konstanten Zusammenwirken mit den Lehrenden.

Design und Künste – Studienzweig Design: Entwurfskultur wird hier in ihrer Gesamtheit behandelt und – gerade deswegen – interdisziplinär unterrichtet: Studierende belegen Projekte sowohl in Produktgestaltung als auch in Visueller Kommunikation.

Il Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Design Eco-Sociale intende preparare gli studenti a dare forma e visibilità a pratiche di cambiamento eco-sociale e aiutare le realtà locali a valorizzare il loro potenziale in un mondo globalizzato, attingendo in modo interdisciplinare dal design e dalle scienze, in dialogo con imprenditorialità, attivismo, tecnologia e artigianato.

Design und Künste – Studienzweig Kunst: Anders als an vielen Kunsthochschulen und Akademien orientiert sich dieses Kunststudium an den kulturellen Entwicklungen des 21. Jahrhunderts.

Fotografie, Film und der Computer sind die Leitmedien. Künstlerische Projekte sind Teil einer kreativen Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen. Es existieren keine „Klassen“ (wie normalerweise an Kunsthochschulen).

Master in Ökosozialem Design: In diesem zweijährigen Master geht es um die Gestaltung ökosozialen Wandels mit einem Fokus auf lokale Potentiale und ihrer Entfaltung in einer global vernetzten Welt.

Das transdisziplinäre Projektstudium vereint Praktiken und Wissen verschiedener Designdisziplinen und Wissenschaften im Zusammenspiel mit Unternehmertum, Aktivismus, Technologie und Handwerk.

Biographies Paolo Berloffa: a degree in Law, Manager for IT and fashion companies which teach him how to link organisational skills and aesthetics. Partner of ArtintheAlps and developers, as well as Artistic Director, of ACADEMIAE. Francesco Bevilacqua: student on the Design BA at the Faculty of Design of the Free University of Bolzano since 2013. He’s a freelancer in video and animation production.

Valeria Burgio: PhD in History and Art Theory, researchers in Theory and Language of Design at the Free University of Bolzano. She also teaches Theory and Visual Communication at the Faculty of Design and Art. Paolo Campostrini: professional journalist. He’s served as chief editor of the Alto Adige and oversaw its news section for Trento, and has been the regional correspondent for Il Corriere della Sera. He also collaborates with architecture and design magazines and has published some books on South Tyrolean events.

Mariagiovanna Di Iorio: designer and researcher specialised in the presentation of books, objects, objects-books, events, workshop and visual identities. Professor at the Free University of Bolzano and the IED in Milan.

Kuno Prey: self-taught designer since 1978. He’s been professor of Product Design since 1993. After 9 years at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar he returns to Italy in 2002 to found the Faculty of Design and Art in Bolzano.

Andrea Sebastianelli: graduated in Design in 2014 at the l’Istituto Superiore delle Industrie Artistiche in Pescara; he carries out research in regional systemics using a personal language developed globally. Since 2016, he’s been attending the MA in Eco-socil Design at the Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University of Bolzano.

Patrizia Spadafora: president of the Associazione ArtintheAlps Verein that is behind the development and organisation of the Academiae -Youth Art Biennale. Former vicepresident of the Venice Guggenheim Circle. Has organised art exhibitions in Venice as well as assisting international artists with their work.

Stefania Zanetti: with a degree in Design obtained in 2015 at the LABA in Brescia, she’s now taking an MA in Eco-Social Design at the Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bolzano. Her research focuses on planning approaches and strategies and her approach to them. She believes photography to be expressive, vibrant, analytical and a source of satisfaction.

Paolo Berloffa: laureato in giurisprudenza, manager in imprese nel campo informatico e del fashion, dove apprende a coniugare organizzazione ed estetica. Socio di ArtintheAlps è fra gli ideatori ed ora direttore artistico di ACADEMIAE.

Paolo Berloffa: Abschluss in Rechtswissenschaften. Strebt als Manager von Unternehmen in den Bereichen IT und Mode nach der perfekten Verbindung von Organisation und Ästhetik. Er ist nicht nur langjähriges Mitglied von ArtintheAlps und einer der Köpfe hinter ACADEMIAE, sondern auch künstlerischer Leiter des Events.

Francesco Bevilacqua: studente al BA in Design presso la Facoltà di Design - Libera Università di Bolzano dal 2013. Lavora come freelance nel campo del video e dell’animazione.

Valeria Burgio: dottore di ricerca in Storia e teoria delle arti, è ricercatrice in teorie e linguaggi del design alla Libera Università di Bolzano, dove anche insegna Teorie e linguaggi della comunicazione visiva alla facoltà di Design e arti.

Paolo Campostrini: giornalista professionista. Tra le sue esperienze, è stato caporedattore centrale dell'Alto Adige, ha diretto la cronaca di Trento dello stesso giornale, è stato corrispondente regionale del Corriere della Sera, collabora a riviste di architettura e design e ha pubblicato alcuni libri sulle vicende altoatesine Mariagiovanna Di Iorio: designer e ricercatrice, specializzata nella progettazione e nello sviluppo di libri, oggetti, libri-oggetto, eventi, workshop e identità visive.

Docente alla Libera Università di Bolzano e allo IED Milano.

Kuno Prey: designer autodidatta dal 1978. È prof. di product design dal 1993.

Dopo 9 anni di esperienza alla Bauhaus-Universität Weimar torna in Italia nel 2002 per fondare a Bolzano la Facoltà di Design Arti.

Andrea Sebastianelli: laureato in Design nel 2014 presso l’Istituto Superiore delle Industrie Artistiche di Pescara; pratica ricerca nella sistemica territoriale con un linguaggio personale orientato ad uno sviluppo globale. Dal 2016 frequenta il MA in eco-social design alla Facoltà di Design e Arti - Libera Università di Bolzano.

Patrizia Spadafora: presidente dell’Associazione ArtintheAlps Verein che organizza e realizza Academiae -Youth Art Biennale. Già Vicepresidente del Venice Guggenheim Circle. Esperienze sia nell’organizzazione di mostre d’arte a Venezia, che nella produzione di opere di artisti internazionali.

Stefania Zanetti: laureata in Design nel 2015 alla LABA di Brescia. Frequenta ora il MA in eco-social design alla Facoltà di Design a Arti - Libera Università di Bolzano dove sta ricercando e definendo il suo approccio al mondo progettuale.

La fotografia è per lei espressione, vibrazione, analisi e soprattutto fonte di soddisfazioni.

Francesco Bevilacqua: belegt seit 2013 den BA-Studiengang an der Fakultät für Design der Freien Universität Bozen und arbeitet freiberuflich im Bereich Video und Animation.

Valeria Burgio: Forschungsdoktorat in Geschichte und Kunsttheorie, arbeitet als Researcher im Bereich Theorien und Ausdrucksformen des Designs an der Freien Universität Bozen und ist ebendort als Dozentin für Theorien und Ausdrucksformen der visuellen Kommunikation an der Fakultät für Design und Künste tätig.

Paolo Campostrini: Profijournalist. Arbeitete unter anderem als Chefredakteur der Tageszeitung Alto Adige, leitete ebendort die Berichterstattung für das Trentino und war Regionalkorrespondent für den Corriere della Sera. Schreibt für Architekturund Designzeitschriften und hat mehrere Bücher über die Südtiroler Geschichte veröffentlicht.

Mariagiovanna Di Iorio: Designerin und Forscherin mit den Schwerpunktbereichen Bücher, Objekte, Kunstbücher, Events, Workshops und visuelle Identität. Dozentin an der Freien Universität Bozen und am IED Mailand.

Kuno Prey: arbeitet seit 1978 als Autodidakt im Bereich Design und ist seit 1993 Professor für Produktdesign. Nach 9 Jahren Erfahrung an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar kehrte er 2002 nach Italien zurück, und in Bozen die Fakultät für Design und Künste zu gründen.

Umfangreiche Erfahrung in der Organisation von Kunstausstellungen in Venedig und in der Produktion von Werken internationaler Künstler.

Belegt derzeit den MA-Studiengang Ökosoziales Design an der Fakultät für Design und Künste der Freien Universität Bozen, wo sie derzeit ihre Herangehensweise zu Design und Projekten erforscht und verfeinert. Fotografie ist für sie eine Form des Ausdrucks, Schwingung, Analyse und vor allem eine Quelle der Freude.
