Small-scale food producers or "smallholders" are responsible for most of the food consumed in the world and most of the investments made in agriculture but however, they also need people and companies that link them to the market. This has given rise to home delivery startups like The Crop Box owned by Phumzile Chifunyise. This is an innovative fresh produce delivery service that provides a variety of fresh and quality produce from urban farmers in and around Krugersdorp packing and delivering directly to Commercial, NGO, and Household clients. The start-up plays a pivotal role in linking the farmers with alternative markets by sourcing up to 14 various commodities directly from farmers to market based on what customers want. day or within two days post-harvest. It is more concerned about food security, localization, job creation, quality & shortened supply chains, and growing farmers through alternative markets. In addition to their wholesale supply service, they also supply family boxes that are they set and prepare seasonal crop boxes filled with up to 15 produce items delivered on a weekly basis to household clients.

They've carved a niche offering of NGO feeding supply. Here The Crop Box uniquely partners with NGOs, schools and local communities to put together 'crop boxes' that they fill with up to 10 items of wholesome produce, bread and farm fresh eggs that last impoverished households for longer periods. As a supply partner to NGOs, they take away the headache of project managing the supply of care packs for organizations with various feeding programmes that benefit recipients such as child headed homes, school children, and local communities. Over 5000kg and 400 boxes of Crop Boxes have been packed, supplied, and distributed to local beneficiaries through NGOs in areas such as Mpumalanga and Soweto.

The Crop Box has also partnered with poultry farmers who provide them with farm fresh eggs. This start-up is well on the way of making a significant impact in creating employment opportunities through their value chain, and contribute to food security and nutrition, local, social and economic development in the Secondary Agriculture sector.
