2022 NORTH FLORIDA BASEBALL

SEASON NOTES & 2021 REVIEW Power Five Wins North Florida pounced on No. 21/24 Florida State in the season opener, defeating the Seminoles 7-4. Alex Kachler hit safely three times, Tanner Clark homered and the North Florida bullpen spun six innings of one-run ball. Kachler Makes History Speaking of Kachler, the storybook season for the graduate transfer from Division III Methodist University concluded with a series of awards. Kachler became the first player in ASUN history to be named ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year and ASUN Player of the Year in the same season. His prolific work on the field and in the classroom helped him become one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Senior Class Award. The Lithia, Fla., native set a program record by hitting safely in eight consecutive at-bats between April 25 and April 28. He tied a program record for hits in a game when he went 5-for-5 April 25 vs. Jacksonville. Swinging Sequera Switch hitter Abraham Sequera homered for the first time in his career in 2021, and he did it in a big way. The senior homered from both sides of the plate in the same game against No. 7 Florida February 23. He tied a UNF record by doubling four times in the same game during a 7-3 win at FGCU May 2. April 23 he finished a double shy of the cycle and May 28 he launched two homers against Jacksonville in the ASUN Baseball Championship Semifinals. Sequera concluded the year 10th in the league in slugging and leading the Ospreys in homers with nine. Freshman Sensation Freshman Aidan Sweatt was a unanimous selection to the ASUN All-Freshmen team, the lone midfielder tabbed as a unanimous pick on the team. Sweatt opened his UNF career with a bang, starting the season on a 10-game hitting streak. He finished in the top 10 in four statistical categories among UNF freshmen during their rookie season. Hits (8th - 50) Runs (9th - 28) Doubles (3rd - 14) Triples (T-4th - 2) All-Region Righty Righty Brandon Reitz originally came to UNF as a starting pitcher before closing his career as the one closing down games for the Ospreys. Reitz led the ASUN with 10 saves, tying the UNF DI record for saves in a single season.

The closer was selected to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Southeast Second Team, the first ABCA All-Region pick for UNF since Frank German in 2018. The Ocala, Fla., native had a 2.42 ERA and held batters to a .174 batting average, the third lowest mark in a single season in UNF history. Bullpen Arms In addition to Reitz’s numbers, there was a cast of hurlers around him to solidify UNF’s bullpen. Four relievers finished with a sub-3.00 ERA in Eddie Miller, Reitz, Stephen Halstead and Darin Kilfoyl. Halstead and Miller picked up a save apiece, while Halstead and Miller held hitters to .233 and .224 batting averages respectively. Miller finished his UNF career with the second most appearances in UNF DI history, concluding with 81 appearances, 10 saves and 11 runners picked off. Notables -UNF spun 46 double plays, good for first in the ASUN and 16th in the nation. -The Ospreys’ 1.02 double plays turned per game led the ASUN and was fourth in the country. -Tanner Clark struck out just once every 12.8 at-bats, good for the best in the league and 14th in the nation. -McKinley attacked hitters, walking only 1.26 every nine innings, the best in the conference and 12th best mark in Division I. He also finished 2nd in the league in strikeoutto-walk ratio at 5.62.

2021 Coach Parenton’s fourth season as head coach at North Florida was one of the most challenging and unique seasons in college sports history as teams balanced the changes brought on by COVID-19 along with the everyday demands required to succeed. North Florida finished 22-23 and 11-7 in the ASUN, finishing just one game back of first place in the ASUN South Division. The Ospreys finished ahead of Stetson and Jacksonville, going 7-2 against the Hatters and 5-2 against the Dolphins on the season.UNF eliminated Stetson from the ASUN Championship

by taking the first two games of a best-of-three game series in the ASUN Divisional Round. In the ASUN Championship Final Four, UNF knocked out Kennesaw State before coming up one win shy of the ASUN Championship game.Parenton’s team picked up two top-25 wins, both coming on the road. UNF opened the year with a 7-4 win against No. 24/21 Florida State before beating No. 21 Georgia, 7-4, just weeks later.Coming up big in both of those wins and throughout the whole season was Division III graduate transfer Alex Kachler, who went on to become the first student-athlete in ASUN Baseball history to be named ASUN Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the same season. He also was one of 10 studentathletes in NCAA DI Baseball to be named a finalist for the Senior Class Award. Joining Kachler on the all-conference team was freshman Aidan Sweatt who was a unanimous pick to the ASUN AllFreshmen team after producing one of the most consistent years on record for a UNF freshman. Sweatt helped lead a defense that finished first in the ASUN in double plays turned (46) and fourth in the nation in double plays spun per game (1.02). In the outfield, Blake Marabell dazzled with three home run robs on the season as he appeared on SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays on multiple occasions. On the hill, righty Brandon Reitz paced the ASUN with 10 saves, finishing tied for first in UNF DI history for the most saves in a season. Joining him in a solid bullpen was Eddie Miller and Stephen Halstead who turned in sub-2.50 ERAs across 40-combined appearances. 2020 The 2020 season concluded in mid-March due to the COVID-19 developments, but the Ospreys had a slew of strong teams slated for Parenton's third season leading the Ospreys. UNF was set to host 36 games at Harmon Stadium and

play 15 games against teams in the 2019 NCAA Championship. UNF did play six of those games after hosting Central Michigan and Ohio State. The Ospreys would host VMI, Rutgers, Hartford, CMU and OSU in addition to playing a road contest at South Carolina Feb. 25. North Florida opened up the season with a 5-4 walk-off victory against VMI Feb. 14, making UNF 2-1 in season openers under Parenton. Parenton put forth a squad that saw the UNF debut of 14 players, 10 of which were newcomers. UNF concluded the shortened season with a 9-5 defeat of visiting Ohio State March 11. The Ospreys received a three-run home run from catcher Tanner Clark and a 3.2-inning save from redshirt-senior Eddie Miller in the win. 2019 Parenton's second season saw the Ospreys achieve notable individual and team numbers and honors. For the first time in UNF's ASUN affiliation the Ospreys received superlative pitching and academic all-conference honors. Redshirt-senior Brad Deppermann was singled out as the ASUN Pitcher of the Year, while junior center fielder Tanner Murphy was tabbed as the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Deppermann and Murphy weren't

2022 NORTH FLORIDA BASEBALL first team honorees representing the Ospreys, as senior second baseman Jay Prather had a breakout year to help him land on the first team. Senior righty Nick Marchese went 7-0 and junior designated hitter was fourth in the league in hitting as they landed on the ASUN Second Team. Parenton guided UNF to a 23-11 record at home and a 3-1 mark against SEC opponents. UNF opened the year by hosting Missouri, taking twoof-three games. The Tigers would go on to finish 34-22-1, proving to be a stingy SEC opponent after taking two of three against No. 20 Ole Miss, Kentucky and No. 8 LSU. Missouri would also sweep South Carolina in late April. The Ospreys kept the foot on the gas following the season-opening weekend, downing No. 3/5 Florida February 20, 7-1. It was the second-highest ranked opponent that the Ospreys defeated in its DI days after doubling-up No. 1 UF, 10-5, in 2012 when Parenton was an assistant coach at North Florida. UNF earned wins in both games against 2019 Conference USA Champion, FAU. The Ospreys defeated the Owls on back-to-back days, 7-5 and 9-8. North Florida would finish the season as the number-five seed in the conference, going 16-8 against in-state opponents. 2018 In his first season with the Ospreys, Parenton led the Ospreys to a 2828 record as UNF made it all the way to the ASUN Finals before falling to top seed Stetson. North Florida had three players make the first team all-conference (Tanner Murphy, Blake Voyles and Frank German). UNF defended it home turf with it's fourth straight 20 win season at Harmon Stadium. Parenton also had three pitchers of the week (German x2 and Brad Deppermann) while Chris Berry earned hitter of the week honors as well. The Ospreys did make some history during Parenton's first year as they swept FGCU in Fort Myers for the first time in school history in a series that dates back to 2008. In Minor League Ball Parenton, who served as an assistant coach at North Florida from 2010-13, returned to the Ospreys following a three-year stint as the manager of the Hudson

Valley Renegades, the Short Season-A team affiliate in the New York Penn League for the Tampa Bay Rays. As the manager for the Renegades, Parenton guided the squad to a pair of Division titles in 2014 and 2016, while finishing runner-up in the Penn League last summer. In addition, he also coordinated the Rays’ extended spring training program in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Parenton was named the 2004 OVC Coach of the Year and also led the Bulldogs to conference tournament appearances in both the OVC (2004) and ASUN (2002). He oversaw a $1,000,000 renovation project at Samford for the baseball stadium and had over a 90 percent graduation rate with 51 academic all-conference honorees during his seven-year tenure.

First Stint at UNF During his first stint at UNF, Parenton helped recruit and develop several standout performers including Alex Bacon, Shane Kennedy and Tyler Moore, who all garnered Freshman AllAmerican honors and ASUN AllFreshman accolades. Bacon also earned the ASUN Freshman of the Year award. The Ospreys also enjoyed other milestones with Parenton on staff including a 10-5 victory over No. 1-ranked Florida in 2012 and a No. 23 ranking in the College Baseball Daily Mid-Major Top 25 poll. Prior to his first stint with the Ospreys, Parenton spent three seasons as the head coach Jesuit High School in New Orleans (2007-09), his prep alma mater. He guided the Blue Jays to three consecutive state tournament appearances and a pair of American Legion playoff runs. His coaching ledger with Jesuit featured a runner-up and two quarterfinal finishes in the state tournament while also collecting an American Legion state championship.

Sun Belt, Colonial and SEC Before taking over his own program, Parenton also worked two successful seasons at Mississippi State (1996-97), helping lead MSU to a pair of NCAA Regional berths along with a trip to the 1997 College World Series. He began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at Old Dominon (199095), where he was part of a 18897 record in five seasons. ODU snared a back-to-back Colonial Athletic Conference crowns in 1994 and 1995 while advancing to NCAA Regional play. He was also part of an ODU runner-up finish in the Sun Belt Conference (1991).

At the University of Florida Parenton took the break from college baseball following a threeyear tenure as an assistant coach at the University of Florida from 2004-2006. During his time at UF, the Gators claimed the 2005 SEC title and also advanced to the College World Series, finishing second in the nation. As the club’s hitting coach, he oversaw an offense that finished among the program’s top all-time leaders in total bases, hits, runs, RBIs, walks and home runs. Florida made two NCAA Regional and Super Regional appearances during his time in Gainesville. Head Coach Samford University As the head coach at Samford University from 1998-2003,

Personal and Playing Experience Along with his extensive coaching career, Parenton was a two-sport letterwinner in football and baseball at Mississippi State University. He helped the Bulldogs to the 1980 Sun Bowl and 1981 Hall of Fame Bowl as a quarterback while earning a pair of NCAA Regional baseball appearances as an infielder on the diamond. Parenton later spent three years at MSU serving as a graduate assistant football coach and two seasons as assistant director for athletic facilities and game management. A native of New Orleans, Parenton starred at Jesuit High School, where he earned 11 letters in baseball, basketball, football and track. He was chosen the school’s Athlete of the Decade for the 1970s. Parenton earned his bachelor's degree from Mississippi State in 1989 and is married to the former Sheila Cummins of Kosciusko, Miss.

Tommy Boss

ASSISTANT COACH, Fifth Season Florida, 2005

23

Tommy Boss joined the UNF Baseball Coaching Staff prior to the 2018 season serving as the assistant coach and acting pitching coach for the Ospreys under head coach Tim Parenton. 2021 The Ospreys recorded a 22-23 overall record and 11-7 mark in the ASUN during Boss’ fourth season with UNF. A total of 15 different arms saw time in 2021, combining to post 306 strikeouts and just 180 walks, one of the best strikeout-to-walk ratios in the league. All told, UNF pitchers allowed the second-fewest free passes of any team in the conference, just one behind Stetson’s 179. North Florida had one of the deepest bullpens across the conference, led by closer Brandon Reitz’s conference-best 10 saves. Reitz paced the ASUN in that category, finishing tied for first in UNF DI single season history for saves in a campaign. Righty transfer Stephen Halstead notched a save, held opponents to a .233 batting average and turned in a 2.28 ERA across 19 outings. Lefty Eddie Miller added 21 appearances to his career total, finishing with 81 as an Osprey, the third most in UNF DI career history. As for starters, Austin Bogart posted a career year on the rubber, going 4-2 with a 3.58 ERA over 70.1 innings. The lefty hurled nine starts of at least five innings and three of at least 7.2 frames. 2020 Tommy Boss returned for his third year serving as assistant coach, cultivating a staff of seven lefties and 10 right-handed arms. Boss and UNF saw the emergence of a few new faces on the mound, headlined by freshman Tony Roca who made starts in all but one of his appearances. The local talent from Ponte Vedra Beach worked himself into a starting role and finished the abbreviated season with a 3.31 ERA over 16.1 frames.

2019 In 2019 the Ospreys held opponents to a .261 batting average, the best mark by UNF pitchers during the program's Division I history. Pitchers posted a 3.84 ERA, good for second in the ASUN and 38th in the nation. North Florida hurlers did not beat themselves, striking out 417 batters while permitting only 192 walks, good for the 78th best strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.17) in the country. The Ospreys finished first in the league in WHIP (3.44), slotting them 44th overall in Division I. Three different pitchers (Max McKinley, Nick Marchese and Brad Deppermann) combined to earn four ASUN Pitcher of the Week honors, the most conference-weekly laurels earned by UNF pitchers in one season during its ASUN affiliation. The season was capped off with the first-ever ASUN Pitcher of the Year award received by an Osprey hurler when Brad Deppermann picked up the award after leading the conference in strikeouts (108) while spinning a 2.46 ERA. Deppermann's breakout year saw a slew of UNF records fall to the wayside. The righty set the UNF Division I career strikeouts record (240), innings pitched mark (246), single season innings pitched record (95), while tying the single season strikeouts (108) and games started (15) tally. 2019 also saw the emergence of senior righty Nick Marchese as he stepped in to solidify the weekend rotation midway through March. The Plantation, Fla., made 12 more starts, struck out 34 more batters, lowered his ERA .91 points and garnered five more wins than he had in 2018, earning him ASUN Second Team All-Conference recognition. The bullpen was strong behind the front-end strength. UNF pitchers combined for 17 saves, the most during the program's Division I history, most since 2005 (21), and third-most in school history. Redshirt-junior lefty pitcher Eddie Miller had a breakout year out of the bullpen, spinning a 1.31 ERA over 30 appearances (tied for a UNF DI single season record), eight saves, 43 strikeouts and a UNF DI record, .155 opponents' batting average. Trace Norkus was also strong, providing a right-handed arm out of the pen. Norkus spun six saves, fanning 42 in 23 appearances. He struck out a single game career-best six batters during a start against Florida State March 6, helping the Osprey arms collect a UNF DI single game record 17 strikeouts. Two pitchers on Boss' staff in 2019 went on to be picked up by MLB teams. Deppermann was nabbed by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round (222nd pick), and Nick Marchese joined the Arizona Diamondbacks as an undrafted free agent signee. 2018 UNF pitchers were big with the strikeout while being stingy with walks in 2018. The Ospreys touted 425 strikeouts, walking only 164 batters (2.59 K/BB ratio). Per nine innings Osprey arms struck out 7.58 batters, led by MLB Draft Pick Frank German's 108. German led the ASUN with a 1.58 ERA, going 8-3 while becoming the first Osprey pitcher to notch 100 strikeouts since Travis Stanton did in 2004. His year helped him become the highest drafted pitcher in program history after being selected in the 4th round as the 127th overall pick by the New York Yankees. Shortly after being drafted he received DIBaseball.com Second Team, Perfect Game/Rawlings Third Team and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-South Region honors. Lefty Austin Drury joined German in the 2018 MLB June Draft, becoming the 48th draft pick in program history after going in the 34th round as the 1,034th overall pick to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Drury fanned 58 in 2018, finishing second in UNF DI history in career victories (16). Playing Career - University of Florida and Independent Ball Boss was a four-year pitcher for the University of Florida from 2002-05 and was part of two NCAA Regional Tournament teams, including the SEC Champions and National Runner-Up team his senior season. Boss made 75 appearances as a Gator including 39 starts, four complete games and 263.1 innings pitched during his career. He boasted a career 3.00 NCAA Postseason ERA with a 4-1 record in eight appearances, five starts, three complete games and 45.0 innings pitched.
