Congratulations to the Graduates Greetings to you all on this momentous day! On behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, I would like to congratulate you on this great achievement. Today, as you receive your diploma from the University of North Dakota, know that it is much more than a certificate of participation – it is the bedrock for building a successful future.

Everyone is capable of aspiring to great goals in life. But dream as we may, the most important factor is becoming capable of achieving them. Henry David Thoreau, a great American mind, put it best: “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now, put foundations under them.” Graduates, by pursuing and completing your education at UND, you have well equipped yourselves to lay the foundations upon which your castles — your ambitions, your aspirations — can stand.

I commend you for choosing to pursue higher education in North Dakota, and congratulate you on reaching the first of many goals: college graduation. I look forward to seeing the impact that you, our soon-to-be UND alumni, can make on this state and beyond.

Special Notices Whether the individual is the first or last to receive a degree in the graduation ceremony, the conferring of that degree is a very special event for every graduate and family. To this end, it is requested that everyone remain seated until the conclusion of the commencement ceremony.

A professional photographer will take a picture of each graduate as he or she receives the diploma scroll. A few weeks after the ceremony, a proof and information about ordering pictures with a PIN number will be sent to the student’s official UND campus e-mail address. The PIN number should be used to order photographs on-line.

Today’s UND Commencement Ceremony will be broadcast on Grand Forks Cable Channel 3 May 20, 21, 22, and 23 at 12:00 noon, and 8 p.m. They will run the pre-ceremony show, Celebrate Achievement, first at those start times followed by the ceremony itself. Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late UND benefactor Chester Fritz, 1892-1983. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” Nominations are solicited from members of the V.P.A.A. Academic Cabinet and the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors; these are evaluated by a committee chaired by the graduate dean and composed of three Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors and faculty representatives from each academic college not represented by a Fritz Professor. The recommendations are reviewed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and forwarded to the President for final decision.

Chester Fritz attended UND from 1908 to 1910. He became an international trader in precious metals and lived most of his life in China and Europe. In establishing the endowment for the professorships — just one of his many gifts to UND — as an “investment in the future of my Alma Mater and of the people who make the future what it shall be.”

He added, “I am especially indebted to the fine teachers who, in the end, have determined in large measure, how well I was able to learn and to use the knowledge that the University of North Dakota could provide.”

2014 Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor One faculty member will be honored as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor during today’s spring commencement ceremony. He is Dr. Santhosh Seelan, chair of the Department of Space Studies, in the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences.

The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late benefactor Chester Fritz. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” The first Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor was named in 1973. Just 73 individuals — including this year’s selectee — have been designated Fritz Professors, 30 of whom are currently on staff.

In nominating Santhosh Seelan for the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorship, colleagues, graduates and students cited his dedication to quality teaching, his ability to guide and inspire students, his wide reputation for productive research and professional experience, and leadership within his department and the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences. Bruce Smith, dean of the Odegard School, observed, “Dr. Seelan has the innate ability to gauge specific student learning needs and adjust his teaching style accordingly.”

As a principal investigator or co-principal investigator, Seelan has been awarded more than $11 million in external funding, primarily from NASA. He has authored over 50 technical reports and made more than 70 presentations, many at the international level.

A Space Studies alumnus wrote, “Dr. Seelan is an extraordinary teacher who had the ability to inspire, challenge and motivate me with his lectures and assignments. He is thoughtful, hardworking, creative, and an outstanding listener . . . he fosters a learning environment based on openness, collaboration and teaming in his classes.”

An alumnus wrote, “In his field of remote sensing and geospatial analysis, Dr. Seelan works tirelessly toward the application of cutting-edge technologies, not for personal enrichment but Dr. Santhosh Seelan for the betterment of the global community. These techniques and capabilities that Dr. Seelan provides represent significant game-changing technologies for mitigating the risks of disease progression, protecting natural environments, securing the global commons, and improving the ability of developing nations to feed their citizens.”

As chair of the Department of Space Studies, Seelan promotes high academic standards and strong commitment among faculty and students. Space Studies was honored with the UND Foundation/Thomas J. Clifford Award for Departmental Excellence in Teaching at the University’s Founders Day banquet last February. Seelan has been honored three times for outstanding service in advising student organizations.

Another nominator wrote, “Dr. Seelan actively pushes the frontier beyond the traditional academic realm. For him, publishing a scientific paper is not the end; instead, it is just the beginning of transferring scientific knowledge into societal benefit. Under his tireless effort, UMAC brought space technology into the homes of numerous farmers and ranchers, who not only saw increased profit but also became better stewards of the environment.”

Seelan came to UND in 1998 as a research associate with the Upper Midwest Aerospace Consortium (UMAC). He was the first chair of the newly formed Department of Earth System Science and Policy from 2003 until 2005, when he joined the faculty of the Department of Space Studies. He has served as chair of the Space Studies Department since 2010; he also serves as director of the North Dakota Space Grant Consortium and manages the NASA EPSCoR (Experimental Project to Stimulate Competitive Research) for North Dakota.

Seelan received his B.Sc.. in geology at Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu, India, in 1971; his M.Sc.. in applied geology at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in 1974; a post-graduate diploma in groundwater research from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in 1975; practical training in remote sensing for geosciences at the Free University of Berlin, Germany, in 1979; and the Ph.D. in remote sensing at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad, India, in 1994.

Colleagues in the School of Aerospace Sciences praised Seelan’s energy, managerial skills, mentorship, and collegiality. One observed, “As the current chair of the department, he exhibits incredible discernment in dealing with the many times difficult decisions that must be made in this position, and is fair in his interactions with all faculty and students.”

Before coming to UND in 1998, Seelan worked with the Operations Research Group in Baroda, India; the National Remote Sensing Agency, Department of Space, Government of India, Hyderabad; and Terralink New Zealand Ltd.

Honorary Faculty Flag Marshal Gordon Iseminger A UND faculty member, chosen from the ranks of the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors, carries the University flag and leads the commencement procession.

The Faculty Flag Marshal at today’s ceremony is Dr. Gordon L. Iseminger, Professor of History.

Dr. Iseminger joined the UND faculty in 1962 and was honored as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor in 2003. He was the department’s director of graduate study from 1993 to 2009. His major teaching responsibilities have included Western Civilization and courses in modern European history. He is among the region’s leaders in state and local history, sharing his work with both academic and popular audiences.

Honorary Degrees Awarded Honorary degrees have long been awarded by institutions of higher learning to recognize lives of achievement. In 1909 UND presented its first honorary degree, a Doctor of Laws, to Webster Merrifield, who served the University for 25 years, including 18 as its third president.

2014 Honorary Degree Recipients Michael J. Jacobs

and publisher on Jan. 1, 2004. He stepped down as editor in 2012 and retired as publisher in March 2014.

Over the course of more than four decades, Mike Jacobs has distinguished himself in the areas of journalism, community involvement, and service to education and his profession.

Jacobs’ leadership of the Grand Forks Herald proved especially critical when the historic flood of 1997 forced evacuation of the entire city. Despite the loss of its own offices and printing plant, he developed workarounds that enabled the Herald to publish without missing an issue and to reach displaced citizens desperate for information. This outstanding effort resulted in the Herald being awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 1998. Jacobs was named “Editor of the Year” by the National Press Foundation for the Herald’s coverage of the flood.

A native of Mountrail County in North Dakota, Jacobs graduated from UND in 1970 with a B.A. in philosophy and religious studies. Before beginning his long career with the Grand Forks Herald, Jacobs worked at The Forum (Fargo), Dickinson Press and Mandan Pioneer, and for the North Dakota Farmers Union. From 1974 to 1978, he owned and published a newspaper devoted to politics, agriculture and the environment in the Northern Plains. In 1975 he published One Time Harvest, a book-length critique of rapid coal development on the Great Plains.

Jacobs has been a member of the board of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and of the North Dakota Newspaper Association. He has also been a member of the advisory committee to UND’s Native Media Center and the Alumni Advisory Board for the College of Arts and Sciences, and a strong supporter of UND’s Communication Program. Jacobs has been extensively involved in civic affairs, including the United Way, the American Diabetes Association North Dakota affiliate, the North Valley Arts Council, and the Nature Conservancy of North Dakota, just to name a few. He also has a wide following among Grand Forks Herald readers for his frequent columns on bird life in the region.

Jacobs was named editor of the Grand Forks Herald in 1984, having previously served as managing editor, city editor, editorial writer and statehouse reporter. He was promoted to a dual role as editor

U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan paid this tribute to Father Sherman upon the occasion of his retirement from the active priesthood: “… for almost half a century, a Catholic priest in North Dakota has lived a remarkable double life. In one guise, Father Bill Sherman is a holy man, the kind of warm and perfect parish priest who would have once been played by Spencer Tracy. But in his other role, he is the talented scholar and painstakingly diligent chronicler who, like no other authority, commands the ethnic history of North Dakota.”

Father William C. Sherman William Sherman was born in Detroit, Mich., in 1927. His parents moved from Michigan to Oregon to North Carolina, and then to North Dakota. After completing his high school education in Lidgerwood and Hankinson, N.D., he joined the Army and served in the Philippines and Japan at the end of World War II. He graduated from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., with a B.A. in sociology and philosophy in 1951 and with a divinity degree in 1955. He received an M.A. degree in sociology from UND in 1965. He taught Sociology of Religion and Sociology of the Great Plains at North Dakota State University from 1971 to 2001.

In nominating Father Sherman for the honorary degree, the Department of Sociology observed, “His volumes on the state’s ethnic heritage are extraordinary works — painstakingly researched, rich with thoughtful analysis, brightly written, and handsomely designed. They are works of careful scholarship of a high order and a real treasure for anyone intrigued with the marvelous ethnic diversity of America.”

His remarkable record of scholarly publications includes coauthorship of Plains Folk: North Dakota’s Ethnic History, as well as works on African-Americans and Syrian-Lebanese in North Dakota, Germans from Russia, the churches of the Fargo Diocese, and much more. He continues to build on this record of scholarship. The nomination of Father Sherman for the honorary degree concludes, “He is a scholar of the first order, a priest of the classic and finest model, and an exemplary citizen, indeed.”

Father Sherman was ordained a priest in 1955, and served the parishes of the Cathedral of St. Mary in Fargo from 1955 to 1962, the Newman Center at UND from 1962 to 1964, St. Raphael’s in Verona from 1964 to 1965, the Newman Center at NDSU from 1965 to 1975, St. Patrick’s in Enderlin from 1975 to 1976, and finally the Fargo Diocese’s largest parish, St. Michael’s of Grand Forks, from 1976 to 2003.

Academic Pageantry The pageantry of American colleges and universities, including such ceremonies as commencement, has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Academic life as it is known today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church and then in the guilds.

The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, in which the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility.

continued. To maintain continuity with the past, University of North Dakota faculty, the stage officials and the degree candidates will wear academic dress.

Principal features of academic garb are the gown, cap and hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of academic dress. Both Cambridge and Oxford since the 15th century have made academic dress a matter of university control even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations.

American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895.

The ceremony you will witness today will be less formal than would have been the case even two decades ago. Still, many traditions have been

For undergraduate students, the tassels hang on the right side of the cap until they receive their degrees, at which time the tassel is moved to the left. For master’s students, the tassel hangs on the left side of the cap and is not moved.

THE GOWN. The flowing gown comes from the 12th century.

While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, it has today become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any trappings of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, or full bell double sleeves for the doctoral degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.

THE HOOD. The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college which granted the degree. The official colors of the University of North Dakota, selected by the student body in preparation for the institution’s first commencement in 1889, are the pink and green of the prairie rose.

THE CAP. Under Roman law, a slave that had been set free received the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship, and of the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Ancient poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book.

The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. At the University of

Ceremonial Objects was usually worn around the neck for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. One side of the medallion worn by the president bears an engraving of the University’s official seal and the names of all former presidents are included on the chain of office.

THE MACE. The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century implement of war. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. A mace is placed as the symbol of royal authority on the treasury table in the British House of Commons at the opening of each session and is removed at its close. In the U.S. House or Representatives, it is a rather plain staff mounted in a marble pedestal at the right hand of the Speaker. The mace of the University of North Dakota symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Made from the oak of the University’s first building, “Old Main,” the mace is carried by a marshal during academic processions and is placed at a prominent spot on the stage during commencement.

THE CHARTER. The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. The original, handwritten charter, enacted in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly, is preserved in UND’s archives. One facsimile is displayed in the President’s Office and another is used at commencements and other special occasions.

THE UNIVERSITY FLAG. The University flag features the UND flame logo set on a white background. The flag is used at ceremonial events and is carried by the honorary faculty flag marshal to lead the commencement procession. The flag is displayed on the stage during the commencement ceremony along with the mace and charter.

THE MEDALLION. A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was used to mark documents as official. Possession of the seal was so important that it

Performing the finest wind literature available, the ensemble has established a reputation for musical excellence through state, regional, national and international appearances.

The UND Concert Choir is a nationally recognized choral ensemble consisting of the most talented vocalists at the University. Its repertoire includes music from the last six centuries, from many nations, and in a variety of languages.

The University of North Dakota Wind Ensemble, conducted by Professor of Music and Director of Bands Dr. James Popejoy, and the UND Concert Choir, conducted by Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Joshua Bronfman, will provide music during today’s Commencement ceremony.

In addition, both groups will be featured during UND’s live PreCommencement television show, “Celebrate Achievement.”

While orbiting the Earth in the International Space Station, astronaut Karen Nyberg recorded a message of congratulations for candidates and their guests at the summer commencement ceremony in August 2013. A native of Vining, Minn., Nyberg earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering at UND, graduating summa cum laude in 1994. She became the first UND graduate to go into space in 2008, riding the space shuttle Discovery to the International Space Station on a 14-day mission. On May 28, 2013, she was launched on her second mission to the Space Station. She returned to Earth on Nov. 10, 2013; her 166 days in space covered 2,656 orbits of Earth and more than 70 million miles. Photo by Jackie Lorentz.

Signs, banners, brochures and even T-shirts were employed to generate wide participation for the University’s reaccreditation site visit by a team from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. In advance of the visit, UND conducted an exhaustive self-study and was the first HLC member to publish its report entirely online. In September 2013 the UND campus hosted the Grand Forks premiere of “The Road to Little Rock,” a documentary film on the momentous 1957 decision of Judge Ronald Davies to enforce school desegregation in Little Rock, Ark., and the courage of the nine African-American students who stood up to the forces of racism. The event gathered international attention, and the New York Times called Davies’ ruling the “landmark decision on racial integration in our nation.” Following the film, a discussion featured Dr. Terence Roberts, one of the nine Little Rock students.

A Crookston, Minn., native, Davies graduated from UND in 1927.

He was a recipient of North Dakota’s highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from UND.

2013-2014

A Year of Vision and Achievement

In April 2014 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that North Dakota was the first to go active among six national test sites chosen to perform research and testing on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). FAA Administrator Michael Huerta (center) visited UND’s John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences to make the announcement. On hand for Huerta’s visit were Gov. Jack Dalrymple and the members of North Dakota’s Congressional delegation, Rep. Kevin Cramer, Sen. John Hoeven and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp. The University of North Dakota, through its Center of Excellence for UAS and cross-disciplinary collaboration across the campus, is a national leader in UAS research, testing, evaluation and applications.

The women’s basketball team came out as regular season and tournament champions in the Big Sky Conference. UND athletes gave their fans lots to celebrate over the year. The women’s volleyball team was the Big Sky co-champion, and UND swimmers and divers had six All-Western Athletic Conference first team honorees and 20 second team mentions. The men’s hockey team made its 20th appearance in the NCAA Frozen Four championship tournament, and the women’s hockey team played the University of Minnesota in the championship game of the Western Collegiate Hockey Assocation. Pablo de León, director of UND’s Human Spaceflight Laboratory, leads a multidisciplinary effort to develop systems for future planetary exploration. De León’s lab is the home of the NASA-funded NDX Planetary Exploration System, encompassing spacesuits, a pressurized habitat, air locks, and a rover. In October 2013 three UND students spent 10 days in the habitat simulating a mission on the Moon or Mars.
