Special Notices Whether the individual is the first or last to receive a degree in the graduation ceremony, the conferring of that degree is a very special event for every graduate and family. To this end, it is requested that everyone remain seated until the conclusion of the commencement ceremony.

A professional photographer will take a picture of each graduate as he or she receives the diploma scroll. A few weeks after the ceremony, a proof and information about ordering pictures with a PIN number will be sent to the student’s official UND campus e-mail address. The PIN number should be used to order photographs on-line.

Today’s UND Commencement Ceremony will be broadcast on Grand Forks Cable Channel 3 May 19, 20, 21, and 22 at 12:00 noon, and 8 p.m. They will run the pre-ceremony show, Celebrate Achievement, first at those start times followed by the ceremony itself. The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late UND benefactor Chester Fritz, 1892-1983. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” Nominations are solicited from members of the V.P.A.A. Academic Cabinet and the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors; these are evaluated by a committee chaired by the graduate dean and composed of three Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors and faculty representatives from each academic college not represented by a Fritz Professor. The recommendations are reviewed by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and forwarded to the President for final decision.

Chester Fritz attended UND from 1908 to 1910. He became an international trader in precious metals and lived most of his life in China and Europe. In establishing the endowment for the professorships — just one of his many gifts to UND — as an “investment in the future of my Alma Mater and of the people who make the future what it shall be.”

He added, “I am especially indebted to the fine teachers who, in the end, have determined in large measure, how well I was able to learn and to use the knowledge that the University of North Dakota could provide.”

2015 Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors Two faculty members will be honored as a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor during today’s spring commencement ceremony. They are Dr. Sharon Carson, professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Cindy L. Juntunen, professor of Counseling in the College of Education and Human Development.

The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late benefactor Chester Fritz. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” The first Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor was named in 1973. Just 75 individuals — ­ including this year’s selectees — have been designated Fritz Professors, 31 of whom are currently on staff.

“She is the most concerned and engaged campus citizen that I have ever met,” wrote a colleague in nominating Sharon Carson for the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorship.

Carson holds a joint appointment to the Department of English and the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. She teaches a wide range of graduate and undergraduate courses and also special Honors seminars. She has been a member of the UND faculty since 1991.

Carson earned an associate’s degree in human services: emergency mental health/crisis intervention. She then earned a B.A. degree in editorial/political journalism and then M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English, all from the University of Washington.

Carson is a scholar in American literature with expertise in the 19th century and early to middle 20th century, African American literature, and interdisciplinary Black Studies. Her teaching and research interests also include comparative religions and literatures, Bibles as literature, narrative journalism, and cross-national and comparative study.

Dr. Sharon Carson

As well as publishing in academic journals, Carson reaches out to broader audiences through pieces in reference works, radio documentaries and editorial journalism. She took on a leadership role in the editorial collective for UND’s widely respected North Dakota Quarterly journal.

Carson has incorporated an international context for the study of American literature in many of her classes. She has promoted opportunities for cross-national teaching exchanges and integrated international guests in her classes through Skype.

Carson is widely admired across the campus not only for her exemplary teaching and scholarly work but also for her service. She has been a strong advocate for human rights and diversity issues, particularly for American Indian priorities.

“I feel extremely fortunate to have a professional colleague at UND as ethical and passionately committed to humanity and the full realization of equality and social justice for all as Sharon is,” a nominator wrote. “She makes the University of North Dakota truly shine on a national and even global level.”

Cindy Juntunen “is a real ‘jewel in the crown’ when it comes to a faculty member who can perform every role in the areas of teaching, research, and service with distinction,” wrote on colleague in nominating her for the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorship.

Juntunen has been a faculty member in UND’s Department of Counseling Psychology and Community Services since 1994. She has served in several leadership roles within UND’s College of Education and Human Development, including eight years as associate dean for research and graduate education. She received her B.A. in psychology from UND, the M.A. in pre-counseling psychology from Ball State University, and the Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Juntunen is widely respected as a teacher, not only among her students but also as a faculty mentor. A prolific scholar, she has published three books, authored or co-authored numerous book chapters, and made presentations at the regional, national and international levels.

Dr. Cindy Juntunen

Juntunen has served in key leadership positions within the profession. She currently holds the prestigious position of a Commissioner on Accreditation for the American Psychological Association. Juntunen has also served in review and editorial capacities for professional psychology journals.

Her leadership on campus has been decisive. “As an administrator, Dr. Juntunen has the rare gift of being able to comprehend complex situations, provide excellent organizational strategies, and motivate others to meet common goals,” a colleague wrote. Another commented, “Her colleagues look to her as a role model of academic leadership.” She has been active in curriculum development for the past two decades.

Juntunen has achieved notable success in winning grants. Two grants, funded for more than $1 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, focused on the integration of psychology in rural health care settings. She spearheaded the initiative to implement online counseling to provide services to rural North Dakotans who traditionally did not have access to such resources. She has served as acting director of the Northern Lights Behavioral Health Center, which offers mental health services to underserved populations.

Student Honor Medallions Honor Medallions are worn by candidates for the bachelor’s degree who have at least 50 graded hours from the University of North Dakota and achieve a scholastic average of 3.50 (cum laude), 3.70 (magna cum laude), and 3.90 (summa cum laude) in courses completed at the University of North Dakota. For the purpose of the commencement program and publication, honors are based on the UND grade point average at the end of the previously completed term. Once final semester grades are recorded and the degree has been cleared by the college, grade point averages are recalculated and final graduation honors are recorded to the transcript and diploma.

A UND faculty member, chosen from the ranks of the Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors, carries the University flag and leads the commencement procession.

The Faculty Flag Marshal at today’s ceremony is Dr. Michael Wittgraf, Professor of Music.

Dr. Wittgraf joined the UND Music Department in 1998. He has been chair of that department since 2009, and was named Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor in 2013. In 2011 he was named the North Valley Arts Council Artist of the Year.

He earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Carleton College, and graduate degrees in music composition from the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University. His specialties lie in music composition, music technology, music theory, and bassoon. For the past decade he has focused on electronic and computer music composition. His music has been performed in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Honorary Degrees Awarded Honorary degrees have long been awarded by institutions of higher learning to recognize lives of achievement. In 1909 UND presented its first honorary degree, a Doctor of Laws, to Webster Merrifield, who served the University for 25 years, including 18 as its third president.

2015 Honorary Degree Recipients William J. Gross

From his birds-eye view of the farms below, Gross often thought about the uncertainties of rural life, especially when serious injuries or other circumstances occur. In 2005, he put his thoughts into action and founded Farm Rescue.

Bill Gross is someone who’s made a living soaring through the clouds, but his heart has always been connected to the ground. He grew up on a family farm near Cleveland, N.D. There he learned about the risks and struggles that come with making a living off the land.

Farm Rescue is a nonprofit organization that helps farmers in the Upper Midwest who, through injury, illness or natural disaster, are unable to plant or harvest a crop. Farm Rescue furnishes state-of-the-art machinery and dedicated volunteers to help these farmers remain financially viable.

Farm Rescue is supported by more than 200 business sponsors and almost 1,000 volunteers.

Following a dream of flying, Gross enrolled in UND’s aviation program and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1988.

A skilled pilot while still a student, he was often chosen to fly UND’s president (then Tom Clifford) to and from important meetings in Bismarck. These shuttle flights doubled as approved training flights for Gross.

Gross was recognized nationally by CNN News in 2008 on their inaugural “CNN Heroes Show.” In the fall of 2014, Farm Rescue provided help to its 300th farm family.

Last November, Gross visited UND to present a talk on “Creating Avenues of Goodness in a World of Detours.”

He discussed his own experiences with “the detours of life,” and the importance of nonprofit organizations and the spirit of volunteering. Based in Seattle, Wash., he continues to fly for UPS.

Following graduation, he was hired by Pan American Airlines. He then joined United Parcel Service (UPS) and has been flying for them since, delivering cargo around the world.

Gerald W. VandeWalle

Throughout his career, VandeWalle has made important contributions to the North Dakota Supreme Court and the state court system. He played an integral role in the unification of the court system, establishing a unified, statewide approach to court proceedings and the administration of justice. He was instrumental in redefining North Dakota's judicial districts and increasing the number of judges to accommodate growth in the state's economy and population. He also promoted the establishment of a mediation program for family law cases and created a trial court administration system to place administrators within the judicial districts to oversee court procedures.

VandeWalle’s record of service in national legal affairs is extensive. He has been honored by the American Bar Association, the National Center for State Courts, and the American Inn of Courts. On Jan. 7, 2015, he was presented the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, North Dakota’s highest commendation to its citizens. At the ceremony, Gov. Jack Dalrymple observed, “When you think about visionary leaders having a significant impact on our state, Justice VandeWalle stands out among the rest.”

Gerald VandeWalle has been described as “perhaps the most accomplished graduate of the UND School of Law.” A native of Noonan, N.D., he received his bachelor’s degree in commerce and law degree from UND in 1955 and 1958, respectively. He was admitted to the bar in 1958 and accepted an appointment as a special assistant attorney general. In 1975, he was appointed first assistant attorney general. During his 20 years in the attorney general’s office, he held several portfolios, including elementary, secondary and higher education, the North Dakota Industrial Commission oil and gas division, and the State Retirement System.

In August 1978, VandeWalle was appointed to the North Dakota Supreme Court. That November, he was elected to serve an unexpired term and was re-elected to 10-year terms in 1984, 1994, 2004 and 2014. He was elected Chief Justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court in 1993 and has been re-elected to that post for five consecutive terms.

VandeWalle is the longest-serving of all sitting Chief Justices in the United States.

Academic Pageantry The pageantry of American colleges and universities, including such ceremonies as commencement, has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Academic life as it is known today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church and then in the guilds.

Principal features of academic garb are the gown, cap and hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of academic dress. Both Cambridge and Oxford since the 15th century have made academic dress a matter of university control even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations.

American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895.

Academic Dress THE GOWN. The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, it has today become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any trappings of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, or full bell double sleeves for the doctoral degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains.

THE HOOD. The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college which granted the degree. The official colors of the University of North Dakota, selected by the student body in preparation for the institution’s first commencement in 1889, are the pink and green of the prairie rose.

THE CAP. Under Roman law, a slave that had been set free received the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship, and of the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Ancient poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. At the University of North Dakota, the tassel colors associated

Ceremonial Objects THE MACE. The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century implement of war. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority.

A mace is placed as the symbol of royal authority on the treasury table in the British House of Commons at the opening of each session and is removed at its close. In the U.S. House or Representatives, it is a rather plain staff mounted in a marble pedestal at the right hand of the Speaker.

The mace of the University of North Dakota symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Made from the oak of the University’s first building, “Old Main,” the mace is carried by a marshal during academic processions and is placed at a prominent spot on the stage during commencement.

for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. One side of the medallion worn by the president bears an engraving of the University’s official seal and the names of all former presidents are included on the chain of office.

THE CHARTER. The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. The original, handwritten charter, enacted in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly, is preserved in UND’s archives. One facsimile is displayed in the President’s Office and another is used at commencements and other special occasions.

THE UNIVERSITY FLAG. The University flag features the UND flame logo set on a white background. The flag is used at ceremonial events and is carried by the honorary faculty flag marshal to lead the commencement procession. The flag is displayed on the stage during the commencement ceremony along with the mace and charter.

THE MEDALLION. A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages.

Performing the finest wind literature available, the ensemble has established a reputation for musical excellence through state, regional, national and international appearances.

The UND Concert Choir is a nationally recognized choral ensemble consisting of the most talented vocalists at the University. Its repertoire includes music from the last six centuries, from many nations, and in a variety of languages.

The University of North Dakota Wind Ensemble, conducted by Professor of Music and Director of Bands Dr. James Popejoy, and the UND Concert Choir, conducted by Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Joshua Bronfman, will provide music during today’s Commencement ceremony.

In addition, both groups will be featured during UND’s live PreCommencement television show, “Celebrate Achievement.”
