Underground Hip-Hop Magazine caught up with one of the best underground artists in the game, Deshaun Jay, in Austin, Texas, and this is what he had to say.

How long have you been doing music?

That's a tricky question for me, honestly. I've been pushing myself and growing as an artist for about 10 years now, but if you ask anyone who truly knows me, music has been a language for me since I was a child.

How was your experience at the SXSW?

It was motivating and eye-opening for sure. I take moments like these to remember where I've come from. So as an artist who has gone from not even knowing how to structure songs and being too nervous to record adlib, to becoming an official SXSW artist, it gives you more of a reason why you never know how things can work out until you try.

How did you get connected to the SXSW?

Well honestly, last year I made it a bigger focus for myself to try and tap into other cities in this huge state of Texas for performances and thanks to my manager I got connected with DJ Hollygrove out of Houston. He gave me a shot early last year and after seeing what I was capable of he gave me a bigger opportunity. For people that don't know you what does your music have to offer to new fans and followers?

I would say it provides a realistic view of a misrepresented part of our culture. As an artist and as a man in general. I'm an early 90's baby, so I'm part of the age group that'll be labeled as "too young and dumb" to the next generation, but "old and stubborn" to the group after us. But it's also a realistic POV. You don't have to be a trap star, street figure, or business mogul to enjoy or relate to what I provide.

What's the biggest support you need as an artist from fans and new followers?

I would say streaming, supporting any merchandise we provide, and purchasing our music. Of course, there are new ways we can be paid as artists with social media platforms but when it comes to what WE do, in my opinion, we're the last pieces of the puzzle to benefit from the complete picture. DJs, Producers, and promoters, all get paid before us even as they're coming along but when it comes to the actual artist who has to deal with shows being called "opportunities" to replace the mention of a budget, DJs that want money to play music in a club they're already paid to play music, it's safe to say that we're in a world where we have to give much much more than we receive in our favor. So when we give you all our art or something that represents such it'll help if you support as much as you can.

As for the rest of 2025, what are your goals?

Build off the creative momentum honestly. I do have a project or two I'm looking to release this year if all goes well. But I just want to capitalize off the great start to the year, keep learning and growing, and FLOURISH.
