THE STARFISH STORY

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up, and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

A MESSAGE FROM...

Welcome to the 2025 Starfish Benefit!

I’m beyond excited that we’re gathering this year at the Hilton Garden Inn—we’ve officially outgrown every other venue! That alone speaks volumes. It means people like you continue to show up and pour love into the children and families who need us most. And that right there? That’s what this night is all about.

Throughout the evening, you’ll hear powerful stories of families in crisis who found hope and healing thanks to the work happening every day at Child & Family Guidance Center—and thanks to generous hearts in our community. Together, we are changing lives. Together, we are saving the starfish among us.

My heart led me to this organization because I know how critical mental health care is—and how many people go without it. There’s still a stigma attached to asking for help, and for families already struggling to make ends meet, getting care can feel out of reach. That’s where CFGC steps in. No one is turned away due to financial hardship. Services are offered on a sliding scale, and many clients receive care at no cost. That means a child who’s experienced unthinkable trauma can sit with a caring therapist, learn to process their pain, and—most importantly—know it’s okay to ask for help.

Mental health care should be as normal and accessible as going to the doctor when you’re physically sick.

While a large portion of our funding comes from grants, about 15% of our operating budget is raised through the Starfish Benefit—which makes tonight incredibly important. Every dollar helps provide care to those who need it most.

Thank you for being here. Thank you for believing in this mission. And thank you for helping us help others.

With heartfelt gratitude,

THE WHY!

YOU make it possible for us to be here for Amelia & Henry!

Amelia - Age 12

This 12-year-old female began counseling over two years ago due to severe anxiety affecting multiple areas of her life, including car rides, school separation, and peer interactions. Her symptoms caused significant emotional distress and disruption to daily functioning. Her parents sought therapy to reduce her anxiety and help her build effective coping skills. Over time, she has made meaningful progress in understanding and managing her anxiety, becoming more open in session and able to recognize and respond to early signs of distress using learned tools. She has also embraced her creativity, using art as a form of emotional expression and regulation both in and outside of therapy. As her confidence has grown, she has become more socially active, joining school sports and activities, including basketball, softball, cheerleading, and serving as her school’s upcoming mascot.

Client Story - Age 8

Therapist started seeing the client when he was five years old. The client initially started treatment when his parents separated. Client expressed feelings of abandonment, fear of separation from caregiver, and complications with adjustment to new living situation. The client would become angry and threaten self-harm and suicide. Through play therapy, the therapist noticed symptoms consistent with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). As play therapy progressed, the client was able to develop healthy coping skills for anxiety and has adjusted well to regular bedtime routines. The client no longer threatens suicide or self-harm and continues to make progress with his anxiety disorder.

THE WHY!

YOU make it possible for us to be here for Nayan, Beau & Christopher!

Nayan - Age 16

At just 16 years old, Nayan has already demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience. She began counseling at the center to work through the complex emotions stemming from early childhood sexual abuse. In the face of significant challenges— including depression, anxiety, and body image struggles—Nayan committed herself fully to the healing process.

Over the past year, Nayan has made incredible strides. Through consistent therapy and the development of healthy coping strategies, she has successfully refrained from self-injury, choosing instead to reach out for support and use the tools she’s gained in counseling. This is a powerful testament to her dedication and personal growth. One of the most transformative aspects of Nayan’s journey has been her evolving relationship with her body. Nayan has been able to shift her mindset, embrace a healthier self-image, and let go of restrictive eating behaviors. Today, she maintains a balanced, healthy weight—reflecting both physical and emotional progress. Nayan's story is one of hope, courage, and determination. Her continued growth is an inspiration, and she remains a shining example of what is possible through support, selfawareness, and strength.

Beau & Christopher - Age 11, 8

These two brothers were victims of domestic violence and have been separated from both their mother and father. The older is a caring brother who has been growing in how they express their emotions and anger. He enjoys the new sensory room, sports play and games in session. He is often testing himself and his abilities. The younger brother is thoughtful and reflective. He enjoys processing his feelings through pretend play with the dolls and doll house. He often creates art in session for his family.
