The Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science (SILS) prepares students to become leaders in the design, implementation, evaluation, and administration of information systems. The program guides students toward expertise in analyzing, organizing, representing and retrieving information, with an emphasis on developing information systems and processes to meet the information needs of the future.

Students in the MSIS program find exciting careers in a variety of settings: businesses and corporations including the health-care and financial industries, non-profit organizations, government agencies, academic institutions, as well as entrepreneural opportunities. Within these settings, they may focus on systems analysis and design, database administration, information retrieval and data mining, knowledge management systems, Web design, instructional technologies, social media, user interface design, user experience, and emerging technologies.

The information industry is one of the fastest-growing in the U.S. economy: the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that, by 2024, there will be over four million jobs available in the information industry – a growth of 488,500 jobs from 2014 levels. Students in the MSIS program are often recruited by businesses and institutions before they graduate. Curriculum The curriculum of the Master of Science in Information Science offers a combination of required courses (28.5 credit hours) that expose students to the core knowledge of the field, and elective courses (19.5 credit hours) that broaden students’ understanding and enable them to pursue their own specific areas of interest. The elective courses draw from the school’s course offerings and from other pertinent disciplines, and include a Field Experience course to provide students with real-world, practical experience. Students and faculty work together to develop an individualized program of studies that will support students’ future career interests.

Archives & Records Management (ARM)

The School of Information and Library Science (SILS) is ranked #1 in the nation for the Archives and Preservation specialty by US News & World Report.The activities of individuals and organizations leave documentary traces (e.g. letters, reports, photographs, maps, e-mail messages, Web pages, videos) that will inform the future about contemporary life. This documentary heritage will be essential for developing appropriate policies, holding public officials accountable, protecting the rights of citizens, promoting organizational sustainability, conveying social memory and allowing individuals to understand their own identities in relation to the past.

The amount of information being generated continues to grow every day, but this does not mean information will be available, usable or understandable in the future. A new generation of information professionals will be needed - working with those who create valuable information - to appraise, describe, preserve, interpret and provide meaningful access to records.

Concentration of Study in ARM The Concentration of Study in Archives and Record Management (ARM) at SILS provides students with the knowledge and skills required to work in archives, special collections, historical societies, records management units within organizations and various other curatorial environments. The principles and practices of ARM are based on provenance, collection-level arrangement, and attention to context, all of which are becoming increasingly relevant with the massive explosion of information across all sectors of society. Students with an ARM concentration can pursue either the Master’s of Science Information Science or the Master’s of Science in Library Science degree. Preparation for a career in archives and records management is not associated specifically with either one of the Master’s degrees at SILS.

Practicum Field Experience There are numerous opportunities at UNC to apply and develop ARM skills through practical engagement. Just a few examples of field experience placements include the Southern Historical Collection, the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, Documenting the American South, ibiblio, Ackland Art Museum, University Archives, and Information Technology Services. With Chapel Hill’s close proximity to Raleigh, the Research Triangle Park, North Carolina State University and Duke University, students can also pursue opportunities in various settings such as public archives, colleges and universities, museums and cultural heritage sites, photographic and film collections, public libraries, foundations, government agencies and corporations.

In a time where our world is changing so fast and information is overwhelmingly abundant, children and young adult librarians are in a pivotal position to help young people learn to navigate, make sense of, and take positive action in the world around them. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Information and Library Science Children and Young Adult Library Program maintains a long history of commitment to the preparation of graduates to serve and advocate for these unique library patrons.

Guided by a comprehensive knowledge and applied understanding of theory, practice, and emerging trends in librarianship, graduates of our program go on to become leaders in the field of children and young adult library services and play an influential role in the shaping of 21st century libraries.

Exchange Programs On an exchange program, students attend a foreign university and choose and attend classes just as they would at UNC. The chief difference is that instead of paying tuition to the foreign institution, the student continues to pay their same tuition rate to UNC. This makes these programs particularly attractive to in-state students. Out-of-state students may have the option of paying the partner school’s tuition rate, which is sometimes cheaper. We currently offer 6 exchange programs: • Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic • National University of Singapore: School of Computing • Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile in Santiago, Chile

Short-Term Seminars Our seminars have been developed and are administered by SILS. They run every summer for 2 weeks, and they are held in Prague, Czech Republic, and London, England. The seminars are open to graduate and undergraduate students and offer an optional 3 hours of INLS credit which can be counted as an elective toward your SILS degree.

Other Opportunities Programs offered through UNC’s Study Abroad Office are also available to SILS students. Study Abroad offers several internship programs, and over 130 exchange programs. In coordination with SILS, students can find internships and coursework relating to Information Science or Library Science.
