DEAR FRIENDS,
I am excited to introduce the 2024-25 performance season at UNCSA, which offers a myriad of productions ranging from plays and musicals to concerts and recitals to ballets and contemporary dance to films and – well, things you have to see to believe!
The upcoming season will feature performances, events and screenings created and performed by our talented students, world-class faculty, distinguished alumni and celebrated guest artists. Whether you like dance, drama, film or music – or all of them – this season is not to be missed. Here are a few highlights.
The School of Dance will feature the works of two of the greatest choreographers of the 20th century, with a work by José Limón featured on Fall Dance’s contemporary showcase, and highlights from Martha Graham’s evocative “Dark Meadow Suite” featured on Spring Dance as part of the worldwide celebration of 100 years of the Martha Graham Dance Company.
The School of Drama brings an array of award winners and nominees to the season. Andrew Lippa’s “The Wild Party,” winner of the 2000 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and Obie for Best Choreography (by Dance alumnus Mark Dendy), is a jazzy 1920s whodunit. “Frankie & Johnny in the Claire de Lune,” a romance by legendary playwright Terrence McNally and directed on Broadway by Drama alumnus Joe Mantello, was nominated for a Tony Award for best revival of a play in 2003. And “Natasha, Pierre, & the Great Comet of 1812,” recipient of 12 Tony nominations, is a musical mashup of 70 pages of Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.”
The School of Filmmaking will present two Legacy Celebration Screenings celebrating its early years. The first screening, in October, includes selections of student films from the first decade, 1993–2003, followed by student films from 2004-14 in February 2025. The curated program highlights a multitude of genres and styles from innovative filmmakers who first pursued their art here.
The School of Music takes advantage of summer with “Pops on the Plaza” in August, featuring the UNCSA Wind Ensemble on Daniels Plaza performing music from famous movie and musical soundtracks. The UNCSA Symphony Orchestra gives several concerts at Centenary United Methodist Church and Wake Forest University, featuring such classics as Beethoven’s electrifying Seventh Symphony and Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” UNCSA’s annual Chamber Music Festival returns for fall and spring celebrations, featuring guest artist and alumnus Stefan Jezierski, longtime hornist for the Berlin Philharmonic. February brings two treats: The A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute performs a beloved classic, “Die Fledermaus,” or “The Bat,” at the High Point Theatre, while the worldfamous Canadian Brass brings its high-energy show to Watson Hall.
In addition to providing all of the design, technical and production support for UNCSA performances and productions, the School of Design and Production presents its annual “Photona,” the dazzling multimedia show of lighting, projection and sound, in December.
And speaking of December, don’t miss our cherished holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker,” presented for the second time at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro, and the second iteration of our “Holiday Suite” on campus, where you can enjoy the sights, sounds and flavors of winter festivities celebrated across diverse cultures and communities.
There’s lots more to see and do. Check out this brochure and our calendar online, at www.uncsa. edu/performances. I hope to see you around the Triad this season!
Sincerely,

Brian Cole Chancellor
