In our New Media lab, a group of students are creating a photorealistic, 3D-animated version of Abraham Lincoln. Their project, led by Assistant Professor Chris Oakley, is a convergence of art, technology and extensive historical research. It’s just one example of the liberal arts at work.

All classes are taught by faculty, not teaching assistants, and students are often chosen to serve as research assistants. Natasha Schwade spent her summer wrenching weeds out of the ground, hacking through tangled overgrowth with machetes, and crawling through thorny shrubs—all while conducting undergraduate research vital to the understanding and preservation of biodiversity on campus.
Inquire Undergraduate research offers hands-on experience in the field, guided by expert faculty who will let you take the lead. Students present and publish original work, from creative projects in art and literature to scientific studies. More than 60 percent of UNC Asheville students complete original research on a topic of their choice— an opportunity most often found in graduate programs.

Joe Phillips ’09 is taking his degree in atmospheric sciences to new extremes—to the deepest reaches of Antarctica, where winter temperatures average around minus 70 degrees. As station chief for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research post, he maintains a suite of instruments that sample the atmosphere, and he witnesses some of the atmospheric phenomena once discussed in his classes more than 8,600 miles away.
