The Arts and Sciences Foundation Mission, Overview and Director Responsibilities Mission The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Arts and Sciences Foundation exists to raise philanthropic support for the highest priorities of the College of Arts and Sciences. Under the leadership and governance of its Board of Directors, and with support from alumni and friends of the College, the Foundation raises and stewards expendable and endowment funds that advance the College's research, teaching, and creative mission. Board Role and Responsibilities Since its founding in 1975, the Arts and Sciences Foundation has benefited from directors who serve the College through their counsel, philanthropy, advocacy, and fiduciary oversight. Directors are elected to renewable three-year terms and serve in accordance with the Foundation's bylaws, mission, and annual operating plans. As members of an independent 501(c)(3) organization, directors are fiduciaries responsible for overseeing the Foundation's assets, investments, and operations. Directors review and approve the Foundation's budget and major expenditures and provide governance that ensures the Foundation's long-term financial health and effectiveness. Counsel Directors serve as trusted advisors to the Craver Family Dean and Foundation leadership, drawing on their professional and personal expertise in areas such as finance, communications, entrepreneurship, real estate, fundraising, and organizational administration. Directors provide strategic guidance that helps advance the College's mission and priorities. Philanthropy The Arts and Sciences Foundation Board is a fundraising board. Directors are expected to make the College of Arts and Sciences among their highest philanthropic priorities and to support the College generously according to their means. This typically includes: • • •

An annual unrestricted leadership gift to the Arts and Sciences Fund. A personally significant major or principal gift commitment, which may include outright and/or planned gift components. Active participation in fundraising initiatives, campaigns, special projects, and annual giving efforts.

Directors also help identify, cultivate, and engage prospective donors and may host or support events that introduce alumni, parents, and friends to the College and its priorities.

Advocacy Directors serve as ambassadors for the College and advocate for its mission and leadership. They strengthen relationships with alumni and friends, facilitate introductions, share information and perspectives from their communities, and help connect Foundation staff and College leadership with prospective supporters and partners. Engagement and Service Directors are expected to: • • • • •

Attend and actively participate in two board meetings each year, as well as committee meetings as assigned. Engage thoughtfully in board discussions and Foundation activities. Serve the interests of the College as a whole rather than any specific constituency. Maintain the confidentiality of information received through board service. Demonstrate an enthusiastic and sustained commitment to the College and its central role within the University.

Little Award for Distinguished Service was established in 2009 to honor a faculty or staff member who has served the College with distinction, above and beyond the duties of his or her position, in the tradition of Bill Little. Bill Little served the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with distinction for more than 40 years. He entered Carolina in 1951 as a graduate student in the first class of Morehead Scholars and earned his master's degree in 1952 and doctorate two years later. He also played a seminal role in founding the College of Arts and Sciences Foundation in 1975 and he served on the first class of the board of directors. From 1973 to 1978, he served as vice chancellor for development and public service. For many years, Little chaired the Central Selection Committee of the Morehead Foundation and the Executive Committee of the Research Triangle Institute. Until he retired in 1996, Little served for five years as senior vice president for academic affairs under UNC President C. D. Spangler. The recipient of the William F. Little Award for Distinguished Service is selected by the Dean and Senior Associate Deans of the College of Arts and Sciences in consultation with the Chair of the Arts and Sciences Foundation Board of Directors.
