from the editors What’s good, free birds?

Look at us. Look at this. It’s our last issue together. And behind this letter are the 16 issues that these editors have contributed to. We could not be happier with the outcome of our scholastic journalism careers. But we didn’t do it alone. Not even close.

And now, we must digress into the cliche “thank yous” and “goodbyes.”

We want to thank the Academy...

No, but actually. We owe our successes and passion for journalism to all of the people who have made room 603 our home.

We owe it to our first adviser for introducing us to the wonderful world of journalism and for showing us the importance of the news. We owe it to our last adviser for showing us that we, too, can make an impact on that world, and that we will continue to in the future.

We owe it to our editors, who took red ink to our articles relentlessly and remarkably, and no matter how frustrating it was at the time, we are all the better for it. We owe it to our staffers for supporting us in all of our crazy endeavors, and for reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously, no matter how stressful the world seems.

We owe it to the newspapers we grew up reading--all of the New Yorker articles, the CNN alerts, and the wildlife photography--that inspired us to join the most universal documentation endeavor: the news. We owe it to our readers, who indulged us in every strange headline, every offbeat article, and every trite news story until we finally got it right.

Thank you to everyone who read with us. Thank you for sticking by us through every comma, colon, and quotation mark. Thank you for giving us the privilege to share our news with you.

As this letter comes to a close, we want to send one last message to our readers: we may be leaving this publication, but this publication will never leave us. And you are going to be blown away by the amazing people who will adopt [Uncaged.] as their own in the years to come.

very day, approximately 105 people in the United States die from drug overdoses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While drugs have always been a societal issue, drug overdoses have been rapidly increasing over the past decade. Cocaine overdose deaths have increased by 42%, prescription drug deaths by 280%, and heroin deaths by 600% over the past 10 years, according to the National Institutes of Health.

HITTING THE WALL

rug usage affects people beyond the user themselves. Twenty-two and a half million people above the age of 12 needed treatment for an illicit drug or alcohol abuse problem in 2014, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s national survey on drug use and health. Family members of those drug users have to deal with safety concerns for their loved ones, potential theft to feed an addiction, and can be victims of the turmoil that surrounds drug users. In addition to the overwhelming physical and mental toll that drugs take on individuals, users who recover face other challenges when they become clean. One of these struggles is the financial burden that drug abuse brings. Abuse of illicit drugs costs the American people $181 billion per year according to the Recovery Brands. This means that even if addicts can escape the chemicals that have infected their brain, they may be unable to recover their lives due to an inability to climb out of a financial hole.n 4

RWAR D This issue is nationwide, and has emerged in Northern Virginia, even amongst adolescents. One recent victim is Alexia Springer - a Centreville High School junior who was found dead from an overdose on March 1 of this year.

Seven percent of VA residents reported usage of “illicit drugs (including non-medical use of prescription drugs),” in a recent survey administered by The White House. Drug overdose deaths in VA increased by 14.7% over the past year according to the CDC. Springer is just one example of an teen who made the fatal mistake of accepting drugs, according to WJLA, and her story reiterates why it’s so crucial to raise awareness about substance abuse. n [Stories by Maryam Azeem, Campbell Niehaus and Simar Kohli]

he reason quitting addictive drugs is so difficult is that chemicals in drugs begin to imitate the brain’s natural chemical messengers and overstimulate the “reward circuit” of the brain. Drugs release two to ten times as much dopamine, a neurotransmitter that regulates pleasure, compared to natural activities like eating or exercise, according to National Institute on Drug Abuse. Treatment is difficult, but possible as long as the process is properly approached. One local drug rehab center - Blackwater Outdoor Experiences- offers assistance for individuals in Northern Virginia.

“From our perspective, [the way to help] is finding out what is driving the person to using,” said Blackwater Program Director Curt Schwartz. “[Treatment is] finding [their] skills and then having a structure of school, physical activity, eating well [and] just getting into a positive, healthy routine.”

As FHS social worker Monica Belton puts it, breaking free of a drug addiction is a torturous cycle, as one part of your mind wants to stop abusing drugs while the other still craves the addictive substance.

“When people admit that the struggle [with drugs] is too hard, they are usually ready to receive help,” Belton said. “The first thing you have to do is let somebody know. By letting someone know I mean [finding] someone who has resources to get you help.”

While overcoming substance abuse may seem like an insurmountable obstacle, professional treatment can frequently lead to a successful recovery. [STAND O

STUDENTS]

n Thursday, March 17, sophomore Zander Rodriguez competed with other students from high schools around the county in the 35th annual LCPS Regional Science and Engineering Fair (RSEF). This is the second consecutive year in a row that Rodriguez placed second in his category and this year he was the only student from FHS to compete that does not attend the Academy of Science (AOS).

Rodriguez brought a thorough explanation of his newest venture into the scientific world to the fair.

He did this through a levitational device that requires one to wear a backpack and utilize the two attached handles to get off the ground. Four electromagnets, two in each of the handles, connect to

the backpack through wire. Altogether, the device weighs approximately 40 pounds. As long as the device can support the weight of the person wearing it, one can theoretically go to whatever height they wish, while utilizing the connection between the handles and the backpack to propel themselves into the air.

Rodriguez’s two high school fairs worth of experience have improved his thought process and allowed him to better consider what he could create for future fairs and for the purpose of being universally beneficial. Rodriguez has learned that within his projects, there needs to be an equal representation of humanitarian benefits and personal enjoyment.

s freshman Sammy Omar walked through the doorway of a crowded classroom, he saw fear plastered on the faces of competitors. Omar immediately sensed the presence of overwhelming tension. Rather than feeling intimidated by this pressure, Omar found himself unexpectedly drawn to the atmosphere inside the FHS Speech and Debate Club.

“Once I settled into speech, I fell in love with it and all of itsdifferent events,” Omar said.

Omar competes in an event called declamation in which the speaker does not write a speech, rather they look for a speech that they can connect with and memorize it.

As a veteran science-fair participant who has experienced the ups and downs of every project, Rodriguez knows a lot about the importance of staying committed.

“Just continue with what interests you. If you want to get somewhere, try to contact people immediately. The more contacts you have, the better,” Rodriguez said. “[That] is your key to success.” n [Story by Jessica Scott]

With each passing competition, Omar gradually picked up on many different techniques to help him compete at the highest level.

Recently, Omar qualified for the National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) National Speech and Debate Tournament in Sacramento, Ca. by finishing in the top six of his event at Metro finals, a regional competition.

“Honestly, I was so shocked [that I qualified],” Omar said. “I don’t even think it really like registered.”

Despite his individual success, Omar remained humble, acknowledging the help he has received to get to this point.

made it to nationals was when I was walking down the hall to go to the finals room and I saw Dhruv [Sheth, 11] running down the hall trying to catch up to me,” Omar said. “That really meant a lot because Dhruv was like a mentor that taught me almost everything up until this point.”

For the competition, Omar is practicing to deliver an emotional speech inspired by a Ted Talk written by Shane Koyczan about his recovering self esteem after overcoming bullying. Omar will have about a month to memorize and perfect his speech before performing it in front of the judges. n [Story by Jessica Scott]

[LET’S TAKE A TRIP]

A

n all-knowing figure watching citizens’ every move. Newspapers and television brainwashing their citizens with false information. A rigid state preventing self-expression.

“Red China.” That’s what history teacher Jessica Legnini and math teacher Carl Giesy expected when they led the annual FHS trip to Beijing, China - a communist state with severe media restrictions and censorship. They couldn’t have been more surprised by what they found.

“When I went there, I was expecting to see that it was only going to be kind of a series of statements from the politburo,” Dr. Legnini explained. “But when I got there, I discovered that that’s not what was happening at all.”

As a child of the Cold War era, Giesy was also expecting to see the China he had known growing up.

“In my memory, China was ‘Red China’, and they were essentially our enemy, much like the Soviet Union was our enemy,” Giesy said.

Another aspect of Chinese life that both teachers had misconceptions about was the media. Both expected that newspapers and television would be highly repressed.

“They’ve got something called “CCTV,” Legnini said. “This is China’s official television, like the BBC. And it’s very like CNN... It doesn’t have speculation in it, it doesn’t have advertising in it.”

MEET THE...

espect, a feeling of admiration towards someone because of their qualities and achievements, is something that anyone who has helped the FHS community as much as its custodians deserve. Custodian Tim Tyler does a lot of good for a lot of people, and deserves an immense amount of respect for all that he does.

Tim Tyler has worked in manual labor for 40 years - at a tire store, in grocery stores, as a construction worker, and now as a custodian at FHS. He originally wanted to be an electrician, but obstacles prevented him from doing so. “[I wanted to] continue on being an electrician, but the economy crashed,” Tyler said.

Tyler described himself as having been an average high school student. He didn’t play any sports or participate in any clubs. There are a few things from his high school experience that he regrets. “ I wish I spent more time in school and got better grades... It’s okay though,” Tyler said.

After looking back on his own high school career, Tyler has some advice for current students.

“Work smarter, not harder” Tyler said. “If you apply yourself, get decent grades, you will get a decent job. Go to college.“ Although he might have some regrets about his past, there are still many aspects of Tyler’s job that he genuinely enjoys. He loves talking to students and teachers and getting to know them. Tyler is a “people person,” as he calls himself, and by working hard, he makes sure that everyone is having a good day.

“It ain’t the best job, but I like people,” Tyler said. “A lot of people liked me [in high school].”

Tyler does a lot to make sure that everyone at FHS is happy. He sets up every lunch, play, 8

concert, event and simultaneously manages to keep the school clean. But despite the high amount of work during school hours, his job doesn’t stop when the bell rings. He and the other custodians work hard to make sure everything is neat and in order - in the evenings, on snow days, cleaning the ice away when everyone else is at home enjoying it, and even during the summer.

“We are here all year-long. Eight and a half hours. While the kids are off in the summer, we are cleaning the school, stripping the floors, waxing them, cleaning the classrooms, making sure they are nice and clean.

That includes the desks, file cabinets, glass,” Tyler said.

Tyler feels as though some students do not appreciate the custodial staff even after all the work they do to make FHS a pleasing environment. He has had some bad experiences with students, where they have disrespected him or another custodial staff member.

“It makes me feel like the world is changing. You know when I was growing up, you had respect. Respect[ed] your elders, you didn’t back talk, you didn’t down them or anything. Nowadays, some, not all students, [but with] some, it’s the way they are. It could be the way they were raised, I don’t know.

There are some in here that don’t have no respect,” Tyler said. “I don’t like when people think [that] because I am a custodian that I’m down here and they are up here. We are all equal. No matter what nobody says, yeah this isn’t the greatest job, but as long as I get respect, people say thank you, and are very polite, it ain’t so bad.”

Our custodians tirelessly work to keep our school clean and polished, and they deserve complete respect from any and all students for the effort that they put forth for the well being of FHS. n

The word “school” usually conjures images of yellow school buses, classrooms, teachers, and piles of homework. This classic image, though, is lacking one essential piece. Gone are those whose presence would be most sorely missed if they were not a part of the school: custodians.

Custodians work over eight hours a day taking care of schools to make them a more pleasant environment to be in. Without their service, the current educational environment would not be able to exist. Three members of the FHS custodial staff - Francis Holmes, Ericka Mogolbay, and Tim Tyler - each have their own unique stories The [Uncaged.] staff wants to bring to the students they work hard for each day. n [Stories by Tahia Karim and Mallory Stokker]

ricka Mogolbay has been working as a custodian for 9 years, but only for 3 months at FHS. She moved here from Lima, Peru with her husband and two kids. Mogolbay is very positive and passionate about her job.

“The best [part] of my job is helping organize, helping everybody, and moving around because I don’t really like staying in one spot. And I do enjoy my job!” says Mogolbay.

She works from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, making sure classrooms are in proper condition and cleaning the cafeteria so students can eat in a healthy, safe environment. Mogolbay also makes sure kids stay inside the school, and helps any students that need assistance.

Before working as a custodian, Mogolbay once had a dream of becoming a secretary or assistant. In Peru, she worked as a librarian, but decided to move to America because it offered better opportunities for her kids and herself - particularly the increased opportunity for women. She believes that if a man can do a certain job, a woman can do the same.

“[I wanted to be] an assistant or secretary because I like to help out others,” Molgolbay said. “It’s better for me and my kids because there are more opportunities here. Both men and women are equal. It’s just a job to me. If women can do it then men can do it just like if men can do it then women can too.”

Mogolbay has had experience with her own kids, which has given her advice for students. She recommends having a plan and following through with it.

“You just need to be prepared to get out of college. I want them to be to be prepared and study very well or else you will be screwing up or getting confused along the way,” says Mogolbay.

Mogolbay does not complain about cleaning up on a daily basis - in fact, she enjoys it. The only downside to her job is the slight language barrier because of her move from a different country, which can make it challenging for her to communicate with others here. Nevertheless, her positive attitude and motivation is a true inspiration. n [Translated by Juan Romero]

[FUNDRAISING ROYALTY] F

or many students, one of the most anticipated moments of the school year is prom. Just like every other year, this prom was planned by the juniors - but this year’s junior class officers were on a mission to create something special. One idea in particular stood out - a charity prom to support pediatric cancer research. The junior officers’ dreams soon became reality when Principal Doug Fulton granted this approval, and a prom with a great cause was quickly underway.

FHS raised money for Ellie’s Hats, a local charity that gifts hats to children with cancer. This charity decided to focus fundraising endeavours towards raising money in support of pediatric cancer research through St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

While this year’s prom kept the tradition of centering around a theme, the voting process for prom king and queen was different. Traditionally, voting for king and queen was done online, and students were able to vote for any nominated senior. Although some students regularly participated in the voting process, there never seemed to be enough people taking part in it.

“Previously, voting would be done through a link online, and we wouldn’t get very many people to vote,” Jessica Connors, the junior class representative, said.

This year’s selection process was unique: the prom king and queen were the students that raised and donated the most money for the two charities.

“We saw this as a way not only to allow everybody to be able to be prom king and queen, but it also helped us raise more money for the cause,” Donna Draisey, the senior class representative, said. Students raised a total of $58,422 with a whopping $4,000 of that coming from senior Isabella Maddiex, granting her the title of prom queen.

Maddiex’s fundraising went beyond simply donating money. She also spread word about the cause to her father’s business, as well as her boss, at Long & Foster Insurance. While raising the money, she had no idea that prom queen was chosen by donations.

“When this first started and the junior officers brought us in, they told us to make sure we can get a bunch of businesses on board,“ Maddiex said. “I just had the idea [to] ask my dad, so then I just got [his business] and my boss [at Long & Foster Insurance] to donate money.”

Maddiex’s dad and her boss were intrigued by the idea of a charity prom and donated $3,000 and $1,000 respectively.

Their contributions alongside dozens of others encouraged Maddiex and the other class officers to fly to Memphis, Tennessee and personally deliver the $58,422 check to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

With the huge fundraising total and the amazing dance, FHS looks to be having charitable proms in the foreseeable future and will hopefully continue to raise large amounts for good causes. n

[Excerpt from “Cosmic Eulogy” by Jessica Carter]

THE PROCESS OF

A POET T

rying to find inspiration can be a difficult process for senior Jessica Carter.

Inspiration is an organic process that Carter cannot prepare for because it strikes at random moments when she leasts expects it. However, this obstacle that she faces happens to be part of her favorite form of self expression-- writing.

Carter has drawn inspiration from some of her favorite writers-Neil Gaiman and Ellen Hopkins-as well as from any other literature she could get her hands on.

Through her creative writing class, Carter’s love for writing blossomed and she discovered a newfound interest in poetry.

“I’ve always loved to write, but I had never written poetry until creative writing.

So I can credit my interest in poetry to Mrs. O’Foran,” Carter said.

By exploring her newfound interest, Carter has realized her true love and talent in writing poetry.

Her creative writing teacher, Shelly O’Foran, suggested that Carter submit

her work to TeenInk, which is a nationally known teen magazine, book series and website dependent on only teenage writing and art, in hopes of getting published.

Although Carter was hesitant at first, due to this being her first poem, she finally submitted the poem realizing she had nothing to lose. She had complete confidence in her writing.

“The first [idea] I had I went through the process of writing and it was the first [poem] I was actually proud of,” Carter said.

After the submission, Carter was later notified that she was published and she obtained higher recognition than she was expecting.

“I was honestly [excited] once I got the editor’s choice award; I thought that was the end of it,” Carter said.

This achievement caused Carter to think about future goals for herself.

“You’re always told to be practical and you want to follow your dreams but on

one hand will your dreams support you and on the other what even are my dreams,” Carter said. “I would really like to do something in my life that incorporates my passion for literature and writing.”

Carter maintains the belief that finding a passion and encapsulating oneself in it is the best way for an individual to express themself.

“I am a believer in freedom of expression,” Carter said. “For a lot of people, writing is a way to express things or channel things. Even if is not necessarily therapeutic for you, it makes whatever you’re feeling tangible.”

Through this form of expression, Carter was able to realize her love for poetry and she began to craft her future.

“I would really like to do something in my life that incorporates my passion for literature and writing but I gotta see where I go,” Carter said. n [Story by Serena Thapa] 11

Mars One is a non-profit organization whose goal is to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars. The first unmanned mission will depart in 2020 to prepare for the settlement. Some call it alteration. Some call it vandalism. But these five people...they call it art. These tattoos aren’t just doodles. These tattoos aren’t just words. These tattoos are extensions of their personality, of their individuality, of what makes them them. Here are the stories of five people who choose to express themselves freely...and with a little ink.

elf expression comes in many forms. While most people typically consider it in art forms such as drawing or painting, many fail to acknowledge the art form and self expression hidden within tattoos. Senior Kendall Novak recognizes the beauty within it.

Novak has five tattoos and got her first one when she was 16 years old.

“You are your own canvas,” Novak said. “You can paint yourself however you want.”

Her first tattoo was originally a small ladybug on her right wrist. The ladybug was for her mom and she put it on her right arm as a way to overcome past struggles.

“I struggled a lot with things freshmen year, like self harm, so I wanted my mom to be here so I wouldn’t do that anymore; and I didn’t, I stopped,” Novak said.

She eventually ended up covering the ladybug with another tattoo but the meaning of it remains the same. She wasn’t fond of the way the ladybug faced so she covered it with an enlarged picture of her cat’s paw print.

This is only one fifth of the stories that she has written on her body. She also has a singular dot on her finger that she and her best friend both got. They chose a dot because it’s small and simple, yet they both have it on them.

People question why she would get a tattoo with another person, but Novak already thought that through before she got it done.

“It’s just a dot so if anything happens, it’s just a dot,”

Novak said.

Her next two tattoos are on the inside of her ankles. On her right ankle, she has her birth tree, or a poplar tree for the month she was born in, Febuary. On her left ankle is a sketch of a planet that she found drawn by Matthew Gray Gubler, a well-known actor and painter.

“I just thought it would be cool [for these] to be right next to each other, so I got them on my ankles,” Novak said.

The last of Novak’s tattoos comes from the Patrick Stump song “Spotlight.” She has the lyrics ‘you can be your own spotlight’ tattooed on her inner bicep. “[This tattoo] is a song lyric by one of my favorite artists and it holds a lot of meaning to me,” Novak said. “It’s in his handwriting, too, so it’s pretty cool.”

Not everyone she encounters appreciates them on the same level that she does. One of her bosses has even commented about the respectability of her tattoos.

“Some people look at me and they’re like, ‘Why do you have that?’” Novak said.

However, Novak chooses to focus on the people who do appreciate her tattoos, as she loves to explain the stories and meanings behind them to people who ask.

Regardless of what others think, Novak has illustrated what means something to her on the most personal platform: her own body. n

hile not all tattoos carry a meaning, those that do often have a connection deeper than what’s on the surface. They can be anchors; a constant in turbulent times. For sophomore Victor Diaz, this anchor is symbolic of his family’s strength.

Both of Diaz’s intricate tattoos depict an element of family that he carries close to him. His first tattoo on his right forearm, a cross with two dates superimposed on it, is for his late grandfather.

“He was a farmer. He lived in El Salvador, so when I would go down there, the whole time I spent it with him…I saw him every summer,” Diaz said.

Diaz’s connection with his grandfather has an interesting story behind it; a family name.

“I’m the only one named after him in the whole family, my whole name”, Diaz said. The name, Victor Diaz, has been at the center of Diaz’s close relationship with his grandfather.

“He’s one of the grandparents that I really knew,” he said.

Diaz’s second tattoo is on his right shoulder; two hands folded in prayer with a cross behind them.

“That symbolizes my mom,” Diaz said. As it turns out, both of his tattoos are closely linked.

“When I went down [to El Salvador], she was always hearing on the news about what happens down there, all the killings and stuff.

So she was always praying for me,” Diaz said.

He said he got the second tattoo as a gift for his mom while he was away.

“When I was down there, I was like, I’m gonna surprise her. So I got [the tattoo] and it symbolizes her praying for me...she really liked it,” Diaz said.

While he has experienced negative attitudes from people who disapprove of tattoos, Diaz says his parents have been supportive.

“There’s some good reasons to look down on tattoos cause some of them don’t have good meanings, but don’t be so judgemental right away...if it means something and you hear what they say about it, it’s not a good feeling,” Diaz said.

it’s like always having him with me

“

indsey Ferrufino, junior, lost an important figure in her life at a young age. Growing up without a father is one of the most challenging things that she has had to overcome, so she decided to get a tattoo in his name.

“Getting his name [tattooed] is like always having him with me,” Ferrufino said.

Ferrufino lost her father due to a brain tumor, and when her family found out, it was too late. She matured much faster compared to the rest of her peers, and grew to be independent because of this experience.

“It changed me emotionally because I don’t have a father figure in my life. As a little girl, you look up to your father,” Ferrufino said.

One of the last few memories that Ferrufino has of her father is when she was visiting him in the hospital. By that time, her father could not physically speak, nor was he fully aware of what was occurring. Visiting hours were over, and Ferrufino had to leave. She was holding her father’s hand, and was attempting to let go, but he would not.

“I [said] I have to go now, and [by] the look on his face, it looked like he wanted to tell me something, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t talk,” Ferrufino said.

Ferrufino cherishes the memories that she shares with him, and the tattoo is a permanent and intimate way of doing so.

“I love him, and to have his name right there forever is a good way to express it,” Ferrufino said. n

ome and take it. While it may seem like a simple phrase, this line hits home for FHS economics teacher, Philip Sessoms. This phrase is tattooed on Sessoms’s left bicep in its Greek form - ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ (Molon Labe).

Although this statement has historical relevance for its importance during the Greco-Persian War and the American Revolutionary War, to Sessoms it means something more than that. Currently, Sessoms only has this one tattoo because he understands that tattoos are permanent, and he is only willing to ink the most personally inspirational ideas. To Sessoms, his tattoo has a double meaning.

“Defiance is half of it, and the oth24

er [half] is resistance to oppression,” Sessoms said.

Although Sessoms placed his tattoo in an area frequently covered by his shirt sleeves, he feels no need to either hide or openly display the art since it retains more of a personal significance.

“I feel that there are times in which our individual liberties are not being inspected as much as they should be,” Sessoms said, “Amongst them are our second amendment rights.

[The tattoo] is fairly closely tied in with our second amendment rights as well. And it’s just something to remind me that we need to always be on guard for our rights and our liberties.”

Each individual is entitled to their

opinions, and Sessoms knows exactly what he believes in. As the statement tends to indicate, it is fairly rebellious in nature - expressing defiance.

“It’s generally an expression of defiance against oppression by governments or by bad forces in the world and it’s a tattoo I share with my sons who are in the military,” Sessoms said.

Sessoms and his sons have built strong bonds through their mutual military service and the shared tattoo reflects this relationship. “Come and take it” bears a much more personal significance to Sessoms than to most people. n [Story by Campbell Niehaus]

attoos are a part of one’s life story. They are the permanent reminders of someone’s past, present, and future. Each tattoo has a different meaning - and for FHS Health and Physical Education teacher, Mark Markosky, his two tattoos are symbols of important areas of his life.

Markosky’s favorite tattoo depicts his sixteen year old brother’s baby handprints and it is located on his right shoulder. His brother, Mason Markosky, was born with Costello Syndrome, which left him mentally and physically disabled.

The usual life expectancy of an individual with Costello Syndrome depends on the amount of biological problems, including short stature,

lower growth hormones, and heart conditions. While some people may view the disabilities as a disadvantage, Markosky says otherwise.

“He lives his life every day to the fullest,” Markoksy said, ”He’s always happy. His goal every day is to make you smile. He’s an amazing little boy.”

The tattoo is Markosky’s constant reminder to have a genuinely positive outlook on life.

Markosky has another tattoo located on his back. This tattoo is of a knight wearing a cloak fighting a demon, both beaten up. Growing up as an at-risk child, Markosky was told that he was not going to go to high school. This tattoo represents his troubles that he faced, and he

uses it to motivate himself to do better. “[The tattoo] just tells me to face my fears, face my demons head on.

You know, I’m going to get torn up on the way there and beaten down, but stay focused,” Markosky said.

This tattoo is an overall representation of his childhood and the battles he continues to face and knows he will get through. The knight has a cross on his cloak and that is used as a reminder to Markosky that he is never alone. “[It reminds me that] God’s behind me, my family and all those kinds of things to keep me moving,” Markosky said. n [Story by Amanda Peña] 25

HEIGHT 6’0’’ SPORT TAEKWONDO TRAINING SINCE AGE 7

addie Sugg’s life has been influenced by martial arts since she was seven. Although taekwondo is arguably the most well-known martial art in America, many of those who haven’t personally experienced the sport are still ignorant about the rules and unaware of the similarities between it and muay thai.

For the last decade, Sugg has practiced the art of taekwondo off and on, but recently she has been serving as an instructor at TopKick Martial Arts to impart her wisdom upon the younger students.

“Taekwondo in Korean actually means hands, feet and mind and definitely there’s a huge focus on kicking technique, but like other martial arts there’s also the focus on values,” Sugg said.

When she was a toddler, Sugg watched her father earn his black belt in karate - which she says is very similar to taekwondo. This inspired her to pursue the sport when the local TopKick opened. Presently, she has earned her own black belt, but continues to practice and enhance her skills.

“I am [a] first degree black belt,” Sugg said, “at TopKick, if you work another three years and train, you can test and earn your second degree black belt which is kind of like getting another black belt [and] just shows that you’re more proficient.”

Just as Neff has to cautiously determine her next moves, Sugg must do the same. While sparring within TopKick, she has to pick and choose her methods of attack to simultaneously break down her opponent while protecting herself.

“My personal favorite is probably the tornado kick which is just a spinning jump, roundhouse kick,” Sugg said.

This powerful spin allows Sugg to deal one swift blow to her adversary, scoring a potential two points in the match for the spin and hit. This maneuver occurs quickly and independently, unlike the punishing sequence of blows that Neff deals to her opponent.

Although the sports are different on many levels, Sugg and Neff both face similar challenges in their separate fields of martial arts and they both must practice frequently to maintain their skills. n 26

n 2014, 27.61 million American children played either baseball or soccer where as only 3.69 million children participated in martial arts according to Statista, a leader in statistical data gathering. There are numerous styles of martials arts, ranging from taekwondo to muay thai, but few non-participants actually understand what any of the styles are. Root forms of taekwondo have existed for upwards of 2300 years in Korea, but the art has only been practiced in its modern form since 1955 according to research done by Michigan State University.

Oppositely, muay thai has a much cloudier history due to various ancient battles in Asia which destroyed historical records, but it is commonly agreed upon that the art originated as a close combat technique for the battlefield according to muaythai-fighting.com. The first recorded usage of muay thai for sport was over four centuries ago in 1584. Although these two art forms are classic and have been used for many centuries, they are still practiced today and comparisons can be drawn between the practices of senior Maddie Sugg and junior Brittany Neff who compete in taekwondo and muay thai respectively. n [Story by Campbell Niehaus]

SPORT MUAY THAI TRAINING SINCE AGE 7

rittany Neff has had a great deal of experience in her martial arts fields as well. Despite being nine inches shorter than Sugg - a fact that would be disadvantageous in many other sports like basketball - Neff has found multiple martial art fields where she can consistently compete.

While Sugg’s proficiency has been measured through her progression to her black belt, Neff’s achievements are centered around head-to-head matches. Although it can be difficult to find other mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters to match-up against, Operation Octagon - an MMA promotion company in DC - and Neff’s gym have helped her find competition in both of her martial art fields - muay thai and MMA. However, since she was not allowed to fight muay thai officially before the age of sixteen, she has competed in just one official competition which she won.

“I started with muay thai when I was seven, then I switched to MMA when I was twelve,” Neff said. “MMA gave me that boost of confidence to help me really come into my own. [It allowed me to] be confident about my ability, [and to] have pride in my stature.”

In muay thai, the body parts traditionally represent the weapons of war. The style of fighting is purely stand-up but is just as physical as other martial arts.

“Muay thai is the art of eight limbs, so we use elbows, punches, kicks, [and] knees,” Neff said.

While small on the outside, Neff packs a huge punch. Literally.

“When I fight muay thai, clinch is my first thing to go to.

I come in with a jab, and then a hook, and when I come in with my hook, I grab the back of [my opponent’s] neck, cross my hands on the back of her neck and start going with [my] knees,”Neff said.

This technique must be executed to a high level in order for Neff to best the best. Neff’s move of choice - while effective in her own martial art field - differs drastically from the precise kicks required from Sugg in taekwondo.

Whether you are motivated to master muay thai or attempting to tackle taekwondo, extreme dedication is required and both Brittany Neff and Maddie Sugg have demonstrated the benefits of their hard-work through their accomplishments. n 27

SUMMER

s soon as Memorial Day begins, the joyful screams of neighborhood kids pierce the air as local pools are ambushed in a celebration of the the inaugural day of pool season and the arrival of summer.

Their safety lies in the hands of the community pool lifeguards. Junior Matthew Faber and Senior Caitlin Campbell are two FHS students that spent last summer lifeguarding and will do the same this year.

Both of the lifeguards worked at pools in the South Riding and Aldie area. Faber worked at the Highland Hills pool next to Little River Elementary while Campbell worked as an assistant manager at the Greenstone, Carver, and Nettle Mill pools in Stone Ridge. Both had to attend rigorous training in order to acquire the skills necessary for the job.

Faber’s training consisted of two classes: CPR & first aid training as well as water training.

“Water testing was insane because you had to swim six laps without touching the ground or stopping in an olympic size pool,” Faber said.

Campbell also had to go through similar training, but her water training involved activities such as grabbing bricks from the bottom of the pool and going through potential scenarios she might face while on watch.

While neither of the two have had to

give CPR, Faber has helped an injured swimmer.

“We once had to call the fire department because a kid fell down the slide and cut a big gash in his head,” Faber said. “[Blood] was flowing pretty bad and I had to hold his head together because [the gash] was that big.”

Campbell rotates between three pools, but is frequently posted at Nettle Run-a small, one-guard pool that requires her to manage all the kids on her own.

“You have to tell [the kids] to get out [during break] and I have had to send people home all the time. It sounds mean but I have to do it,” Campbell said. “We always also have those rowdy kids who get in fights and talk back, but it’s fun because by the end of the summer you know all the kids and they come up into your office and it’s nice.”

Despite the difficulties, both Faber and Campbell find lifeguarding extremely rewarding.
