Where Are They Now? Former Student Bar Association presidents share why they look forward to coming back for Law Reunion Weekend in May.

“I have always believed that you make your own future. Since my time in law school, I have made my own path and in 2018, I opened Puzo Hernandez Law in Miami, Fla. My practice focuses on family law matters. My plans are to continue to grow my practice, to continue finding solutions for people facing difficult circumstances, and to ensure that I continue to develop the skills necessary to get my clients to a better place. Coming back to my Carolina Law reunion is a great way to reconnect and appreciate the school for helping me create the future I wanted.”

—Leslie Puzo ’15 Partner, Puzo Hernandez Law

“Immediately after law school, I clerked at the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and then was a litigation associate at Kennedy, Covington, Lobdell & Hickman in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1989, I returned to my hometown of Lillington, North Carolina and have been practicing law with my father and others since that time. In 2001, I added an LLM in taxation from the University of Florida Law School. I always look forward to reunion and the chance to reconnect with classmates and friends whom I have not seen in a number of years.”

—Al Bain ’85 Partner, Bain & McRae, LLP

"I have done a little bit of everything since leaving UNC Law: big firms, Fortune 250 companies, UNC System schools, and now running my own federal and state lobbying consultancy. Many of those opportunities led me to six years of service as a member of the NC General Assembly, and UNC School of Law prepared me for success at every stop. Having an opportunity to lead our state's future lawyers and jurists as SBA President at UNC was a high honor. I hold the friendships created while in law school among my most valued."

—Ed Hanes ’00 Federal and State Lobbyist Consultant

“While my path after law school is anything but traditional, I have found that the experience of law school continues to influence my everyday life. Rarely does a day go by that is not impacted by the knowledge and relationships begun at UNC Law. These reunions are a great excuse to reconnect with old friends and share the direction that life has taken us since graduation. I hope to see everyone there!”
