GIRLS HEALTH EDUCATION EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM
UNATTI FOUNDATION | 2021 GHEEP REPORT
OUR MISSION
The Unatti Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides comprehensive programs for girls in Nepal who live in vulnerable situations. Through academic, health, and life skills education, Nepali girls become enlightened, empowered leaders who are inspired to give back, benefiting the girls' communities and future generations locally and around the world.

WHY GIRLS The Unatti Foundation is committed to uplifting the lives of all of Nepal’s children and sees a particular and urgent opportunity to effect change by specifically supporting girls and young women. Educated girls are more likely to remain in their home communities than their male peers. This commitment to local stability and education self-perpetuates progress — it's a ripple effect manifested through decreased poverty, more self-reliance, more cooperative policies and higher educational rates among subsequent generations. In these vulnerable situations and populations, investing in the advancement of girls and women very directly results in community enrichment and elevation.

Our GHEEP workshop teachers travel around Kathmandu as well as to rural areas outside the Kathmandu valley. These teachers are social work student interns from the Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management. Through Unatti’s partnership with the college, these students can earn academic credit while being trained and while teaching the menstrual workshops to the community. Each year Unatti Foundation trains 15+ health worker, many who have stayed on an become workshop team leaders supporting and advising younger inters as they enter into the classroom.

Key Collaborations Unatti Foundation has a close partnership with the School of Social Work at Kadambari Memorial College of Science and Management. We underwrite the training while providing the health workers the opportunity to conduct fieldwork and collect data. The social work field is new in Nepal, so our partnership with social work students is an innovative and sustainable method that also allows students to receive academic credit for their participation. We are also working with local schools to train teachers to provide menstrual education to their students.

WHAT MAKES THIS PROGRAM UNIQUE GHEEP is unique for a number of reasons. It was suggested and initiated not from foreigners, but from local Nepali women who saw a critical need for menstrual education. The partnership to recruit and train health worker interns from a nearby college to lead the menstrual workshops has already been established. These health workers are Nepali and can thus provide menstrual education in a manner that doesn’t require translation across language or cultural barriers. Last of all, the Unatti Foundation has been part of the Bhaktapur community for 20 years and is thus already familiar with its leaders and schools.
