To stabilize the rear of the rifle, Bill installed an XLR Industries Tactical buttstock. The lightweight buttstock features QD flush cups on both the left and right sides, an ambidextrous cheek rest and a mount point for a monopod. The stock can be adjusted for length of pull, cheek rest height, recoil pad height, and even up to 10 degrees of cant.

We asked Bill about what glass he chose for his RPR. “I figure that especially when shooting at distances of 1,000 yards and beyond, the glass you use is probably equally as important as your ammo and barrel,” he says. “I’ve had the pleasure of trying out a few high-end scopes in my time and found out quickly, yes, you do get what you pay for. But also, at the upper echelons, the law of diminishing returns runs strong. I wasn’t looking to break the bank with my build… I already went far past my budget by acquiring the Proof barrel. I decided to go with the SIG Sauer Tango6 5-30x56 scope because it combines the performance I was looking for with the limits of my budget.” The scope sits in a Midwest Industries 34mm Heavy Duty zero-offset scope mount.

Bill invited us to head to the range to shoot 100-yard groups. We immediately noticed that the Proof Research carbon fiber barrel made us look like better shooters than we usually are by good by giving us consistent, hole-on-hole groups. Our best group was 0.147-inches with Nosler Match Grade 140-grain Custom Competition. We also noticed that the carbon fiber barrel cools down a lot faster than the factory steel barrel. In fact, the barrel could be touched after a few minutes after shooting. A coolershooting barrel equates to better accuracy and a longer lifespan.

After a day of not running and gunning—more like sitting and gunning—with Bill, we came to fully appreciate his RPR. It’s a basic build in a way, and yet has some very nice touches. “After building plenty of ARs, it was refreshing to work on a different kind of rifle,” Bill says. “However, even though it’s a completely different animal, it did feel somewhat familiar to me, probably because of the fact that many AR parts fit on this rifle. I’ve got to hand it to the designers at Ruger. They made a precision bolt-action gun that even a hyperactive shooter like myself can sit down and enjoy.”

03 Clean the Tip It’s important to remember to clean the tip often with a brass wire brush, especially before you begin stippling.

Melted plastic can stick to the tip, causing debris to be inadvertently applied to your frame. Pieces of burnt plastic can accumulate and give off more fumes than you want as well.

A quick brushing on the tip is good enough, especially when the tip is still hot. Do this with each tip.

The Tips

Mark Your Pattern

We’ll be using three different OTD tips in this guide. The narrow 20LPI Finish Tip is designed to apply finishing edging and borders. The round 16LPI Waffle Tip provides fast results and can be used in multiple ways to vary the amount of grip desired. The arched Cutting Tip can be used for borders or flattening material and removing raised portions. Its angle provides an easy way to cut straight lines.

In this example, we are going to stipple a pistol frame. After making sure our firearm is unloaded, we removed its slide so the frame is easier to work with. Using a permanent marker, we drew the borders of where we intend to apply stippling. Don’t worry; markings from markers such as a Sharpie can be removed with rubbing alcohol.

02 Define the Borders Using the Cutting Tip, we went over the borders that we drew with the marker. This is optional depending on what look you’re going for, but we like having a defined border. It makes it look neater and makes it easier to see what areas to stipple. The act of stippling is about observation and feel. Don’t over-do it. You can always go back and apply more heat and pressure if you feel that your first pass is too light.

This narrow tip allows us to apply a 20LPI of stippling along the curving border that the circular-shaped waffle tip that we will use later on won’t be able to fit. In the tighter areas we apply the tip twice in anticipation of places that the waffle tip won’t be able to access.

05 Bulk Stippling The 16LPI Waffle Tip is great for making quick work of larger spaces. Back before the advent of these specialized tips you had to stipple each point individually.

Now, with 16LPI of points, you can canvas an area in no time. Some people like to make their stippling lined up nice and neat, while others like to randomize their contact points. You can cover up any missed or bald spots by touching the surface again.

ave you ever wanted to just bust out of work after a hectic

workweek and hit the open road to do some exploring, far away from civilization as you know it? That’s exactly what Jim and Olivia did. Seeking both decompression from a stressful week and the excitement of a new adventure, the two set out to the extreme south end of Arizona, a place that neither had yet experienced.

Although not a lot of time was spent planning the trip because of work, Jim was able to take off on a Thursday afternoon to cram in some planning and prepping and make an early Friday morning start from their home in Santa Barbara, California. The first stop on the nearly 800-mile round-trip expedition would be El Cajon, California. Then, after visiting friends, Jim and Olivia hopped on I-8 and headed east.

“I didn’t know the area at all but found some 4×4 trails on my topo maps with some cool-looking topography, so we headed that direction,” Jim says. “After searching the trails and it being almost dark, we found a great spot that had a fire ring, but it looked as though no one had been back there in quite some time. We set up camp, cooked some dinner, and relaxed by the fire, watching shooting stars and constellations. There was no moon that night so we could see perfectly.

“The next morning we explored the surrounding area, which proved to be pretty interesting. I knew there was a prospect mine at the end of the wash, but we found that there used to be a structure just across from camp that was littered with old cans and artifacts from a lifetime ago. We had no schedule, so we packed up and headed east toward Yuma, stopping at a rather well-known hot spring which we thought we might take a dip in. It ended up being so packed that we decided to keep trekking.

“We stopped in Yuma for gas and to grab lunch in the Old Town, where we ended up walking around and checking out the area for a little longer than we should have; this is what caused us to get to camp way too late. After that we hit the road, with it approaching evening and us still being

“After the drive through Ajo to see the Double Arch, we headed toward the more remote sections along a series of 4x4 trails that take you south and west across the park and then back out through the north. Along this route you’ll see a lot of really amazing scenery, mines and old cattle camps.

“The area is vast and the terrain varies quite a bit. We continued north toward the edge of the monument, where we were to camp on BLM land, and stopped at a few more cattle camps and ranches. One that stood out was Bates Well Ranch, which was founded in 1935 by the Gray family and was operated and developed by Henry Gray until he died in 1976. The Gray family started ranching here before the park was ever established, and they were allowed to continue to do so. The ranch houses are still mainly untouched, and you are able to walk around and get a taste of a lifestyle long lost.

Jim and Olivia found an ideal way to get away from it all. The trip from Santa Barbara to Yuma and back took a total of four nights and five days to complete and sounds as fun as it looks. Adorned with plenty of deep laser etchings and extremely detailed Cerakote work, this rifle has a powerful, exciting look.

Battle Arms Development went for a cohesive theme to focus on rather than simply throwing a bunch of parts on a gun. The result is a sharp-looking rifle that’s upgraded with an assortment of high-end parts that work in sync with one another. Like the other build, it may not look like it, but this Tread also makes use of most of its original parts, including upper and lower receivers, bolt carrier group, barrel, low-profile gas block and three-prong flash hider.

Battle Arms Development added SIG’s Romeo5 Tread red-dot optic as well as M400 Tread adjustable flip sights, along with a collection of their own proprietary accessories.

Although there are many additions on this Tread, it remains lightweight and feels like a rifle that maintains all of its utility.

“So by the final day of SHOT, I was thinking I needed to make some more of them. I ran around that last day talking to suppliers and trying to put together a plan.

Then I took it to the NRA show to see what the general public thought. It was a huge success. I was doing interviews trying to talk about Tailhook braces and the hosts wanted to just talk about the bolt pistol.”

Gear Head Works may be known for its successful line of Tailhook pistol braces, but the company actually got its start making aftermarket parts for bullpup rifles like the IWI Tavor and Steyr Aug. Paul fills us in: “We have been doing that for years as I love bullpups and there wasn’t any good aftermarket support for them. Most people think all we do is arm braces, but it isn’t what got the company started. The Tailhook concept rolled around in the back of my head for a long time along with the rest of them. So I kept working on the designs and even made two entire pre-production runs of the Mod 1 before it was made public in 2017. It was a long time in development with lots of investment in all the testing and patent protection.” Something that few know is that Gear Head Works also does design and consulting work outside the firearms industry. Paul explains: “We’ve designed and produced automated machinery for various industries to help streamline their operations and reduce costs. We don’t do as much of that anymore since the Tailhooks have kept us so busy.”

“One” is a bold and unique name for a gun. Just how did Paul and the crew come up with the pistol’s name?

He tells us: “On the way home from NRA, we spent a lot of time brainstorming over what to call it. There must have been over 200 suggestions with the crew in the truck on that ride back. The name still wasn’t settled on, though. As time passed, we kept working on bringing it to production and finalizing design tweaks. Every so often we would discuss names again. There were always
