Ever wonder about what happens to the students you’ve come to know in Klein Theatre after they graduate? Whether it be on the stage, backstage, in the box office, running a theatre, or in a variety of other professional endeavors, this is our way of letting you know what some of them have been up to since leaving their UMW home . . .

After graduation, Ryane Nicole Studivant ’03 completed the acting apprenticeship at Walnut Street Theatre, then immediately took a contract as a “Player” at Barter Theatre in Virginia. These two programs continued Ryane’s love and education for both acting and theatre administration. She spends her career pursuing musical theatre performance while also working as an arts administrator. Ryane is a member of Actors Equity Association and counts as her favorites roles in Avenue Q, Aida, Legally Blonde and the 10time Barrymore-nominated, highly acclaimed production of The Color Purple in Philadelphia where she resides with her husband, Ian. She recently played her dream role of Mama Rose in Gypsy at Gretna Theatre. While at Mary Washington, Ryane was the assistant stage manager of Baby, Cabaret, and Approaching Zanzibar, stage manager of Ring Round the Moon, performed in The Caucasian Chalk Circle, A Wonderful Life, Blithe Spirit, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and The Laramie Project. Ryane also worked in the department in both the box office and the management office.

After graduating with degrees in theatre, PK Hensel ‘96 and Taylor Dupuis Hensel ’98 remained in Fredericksburg while PK worked as the scene shop supervisor for the department and earned an additional degree in historic preservation at Mary Washington. By the year 2000 they had married and moved to northern Virginia and then Savannah, Ga. Later, they moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where Taylor attended UNC to become an operating room nurse. They had two children and PK combined his love of technical theatre and historic preservation to get a master’s in architecture from NC State in 2020. Today, Taylor is an operating room nurse manager at UNC Chapel Hill and PK is an architect in Durham, NC.

During his time at Mary Washington, PK worked as an electrician on Baby with the Bathwater, served as production electrician on Cloud 9, assistant stage manager for The Fairy Garden, Chamber Music, and The Shadow Box, assistant lighting designer for Picnic, and the lighting designer for The Taming of the Shrew. He also worked in the department as a scene shop assistant.

Taylor supervised props for Antigone, was the sound engineer for The Fairy Garden, Chamber Music and Inspecting Carol, lightboard operator for Waiting for Godot, on the run crew for Into the Woods, carpenter for The School for Wives and Six Characters in Search of an Author, and designed sound for Picnic. Taylor was the sound designer for Cloud 9, and traveled with the MWC production for performances in London. She also worked for the department as a scene shop assistant.

Scholarships change lives. Create your legacy with an IRA Charitable Rollover Gift. Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from your IRA to support UMW Theatre. Satisfy some or all of your required minimum distribution for the year. Reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions. Make a gift that is not subject to the deduction limits on charitable gifts. IRA ROLLOVER 70 ½ or older direct up to $100,000 For more information on how you can create a legacy for our students, contact: Jan Clarke at (540) 654-1118 or jclarke@umw.edu or Gregg Stull at (540) 654-1980 or gstull@umw.edu. 4 4 4 4

Acknowledging the AcknowledgingLandthe Land

We acknowledge the Native American people who lived along the Fall Line of the Rappahannock River, on whose home we are gathered for this performance. The Manahoac, Rappahannock Tribe and Patawomeck Tribe of Virginia are the Indigenous peoples of this unceded land. We honor their resilience, their fight for rightful recognition and tribal sovereignty, and their connection to the land on which we are grateful to gather, to teach, to learn, and to create theatre.

Gifts to UMW Theatre (since April 2023)

Our heartfelt thanks to friends who make generous gifts that provide scholarships and other educational opportunities for our students.

IDEAS IN PERFORMANCE

On March 1, 17 theatre students enrolled in THEA 435: Ideas in Performance will embark on a 10-day research trip in New York, NY, where they will interview theatre professionals, network with alumni, take master classes, and experience a diversity of plays and musicals both on and offBroadway.

Thanks to support from the Undergraduate Research program at the University of Mary Washington and our donors, these students will get a first hand look at what it means to be a working professional in the American theatre as they engage their research and consider their own emerging careers.

Join on this journey by following us on Facebook where the students will be sharing their experiences throughout the trip. You will experience their joys, their frustrations, and their discoveries as they make their way in the Big Apple.
