We are glad you are joining us for Family Weekend 2012. UMW believes that when a student goes to college, the whole family experiences the transition. Because of this, we are especially eager to share with you the exciting activities going on at UMW. Family Weekend is full of opportunities to learn more about what your student experiences here every day: classes and interaction with faculty, club-sponsored programs, sporting events, and community programs.

Over the course of the weekend, we hope you will learn what life at UMW is like, and build memories to share with your family for years to come. Thank you for visiting the University of Mary Washington.

Important Notices Construction Please note that Campus Walk is closed between the Simpson Library and the Jepson Science Center due to construction of the new Convergence Center. Guests parking in the UMW Parking Deck are encouraged to take the Family Weekend trolley to move around campus on Saturday, Sept. 22.

Pedestrians are asked to bypass construction using the College Avenue sidewalk beginning at duPont Hall.

Dumpster Dive

Education Abroad Fair 1–4 p.m., Woodard Campus Center, Great Halleconomic cultural social Get a jumpstart on your study abroad plans and come to UMW’s Education Abroad Fair. Hop table to table and explore the variety of education abroad programs that are available to UMW students. Meet with UMW faculty members who lead winter, spring, and summer break programs.

Speak to UMW students who have returned from their programs abroad and are eager to share their experiences. Collect materials from visiting education abroad providers. Learn the ropes for planning your education abroad experience and link your destination to your academic goals, or attend a 15-minute seminar on program selection, scholarships, or financial aid. By the end of the fair, you will have made a giant leap toward your education abroad experience at UMW.

What is the d.o.t Campaign?

The d.o.t. campaign is designed to make the world a better place; socially, culturally, economically, and environmentally– by empowering individuals to do one thing. The campaign stems from the idea that small actions can have big impacts. When an entire community commits to personal sustainability practices, change is possible.

Parking Parking is available in the UMW Parking Deck, located on Alvey Drive off of U.S. Route 1, or in marked visitor parking on College Avenue or Double Drive. On Saturday, parking will also be available in Dodd Parking Lot, behind George Washington Hall on Double Drive.

Guests parking in the UMW Parking Deck on Saturday are encouraged to take the trolley from the parking deck to Lee Hall for registration and check-in. See the trolley schedule on page 5 for details.

Fireside Chat: Looking at the Emancipation Proclamation

The session will be moderated by Kenneth D. Machande, associate professor of accounting and management information systems, and followed with a Q&A session.

7–9 p.m., George Washington Hall, Dodd Auditorium Drawn from the popular book The Emancipation Proclamation: Three Views, this program marks the issuance of the preliminary proclamation in September 1862 and brings together three prominent authors to interpret, evaluate, and remember the Emancipation Proclamation at its 150th anniversary. To win this game you must calculate moves that involve eating a chocolate bar! The game, presented in general terms, will illustrate questions and techniques of combinatorial game theory. Documentary Film: The Angel of Marye’s Heights

2–5 p.m., Monroe Hall, Room 116 The documentary film highlights the story of Sergeant Richard Rowland Kirkland, otherwise known as “The Angel of Marye’s Heights.” Perhaps the most compassionate and heroic character of the entire Civil War, this lone Confederate soldier’s conduct has become one of the most touching and inspirational subjects ever to come out of the War Between the States. The film will run at 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m.

Tour of Brompton, Home of the UMW President Welsh Festival

Discussion of Digital History at UMW 1 p.m., Monroe Hall, Room 211 Join Jeffrey W. McClurken, associate professor of history and American studies, for a discussion about history and technology and its applications in the classroom experience.

Eagles Athletics

3–5 p.m., Brompton, 704 Sunken Rd. Described as one of America’s most historic houses, Brompton is famous for being at the center of the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and for serving as a Union hospital during the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. Throughout the years, this historic home and its grounds have undergone seasons of renovation and restoration under the watchful eyes of numerous talented specialists.

The home now serves as the official residence of the University president. President and Mrs. Hurley will be on hand to greet families.

ITA Regional Tennis Championships Saturday–Sunday, UMW Tennis Center Women’s Tennis will be hosting the ITA Regional Tennis Championships.

Process and Paradox 2–3 p.m., Combs Hall, Room 139 Join us for a lecture with Eric Standley, associate professor of studio art at Virginia Tech and exhibited artist, in conjunction with the Reinterpreting the Decorative Arts exhibition.

His innovative cut-paper drawing process took several years to develop. In this presentation, he will discuss the technical process and conceptual development that led to his current body of work titled Either/Or Decreed. Reinterpreting the Decorative Arts will be on display in the Ridderhof Martin Gallery from Sept. 7–Oct. 5, 2012. Preregistration required.

2–3:30 p.m., duPont Hall, Klein Theatre In poetic and forthright conversations, 11 women share moments of their lives that are seemingly uncommon, yet surprisingly familiar. One after another, they reveal their spellbinding secrets— secrets you will find amusing, heartbreaking, and sometimes bewildering. A striking play that will catch you by surprise, Talking With, by Jane Martin, is a triumphant celebration of being alive! Purchase your ticket at the Klein Theatre Box Office in duPont Hall. Cost: $5 UMW ID, $10 students/senior citizens, $12 all others.

Talking With Afterword 3:30 p.m., duPont Hall, Klein Theatre A post-performance discussion of Talking With will take place immediately following the 2 p.m. performance.
