These words taken from the New Testament have been used for generations to emphasize the positive results of selflessness.

Most of the readers of this article have probably had parents, teachers, or religious leaders encourage them to apply this principle in their daily lives during their childhoods or adolescence. While most who have heard these words probably nodded in tacit agreement, too often they failed to apply such a potentially life-changing axiom in their lives on a consistent, daily basis.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the UMS-Wright culture has been the application of this principle in so many diverse contexts. In fact, the examples displayed by students, staff members, parents, and alumni are so numerous that determining the examples that are most profound would be impossible. The school has been blessed to a degree that is truly amazing because of the unselfish lives of so many servant-leaders who have UMS-Wright relationships.

Members of the UMS-Wright Parents’ Association devote countless hours of their personal time to support students and teachers in order to recognize achievements as they also raise funds to provide academic enhancements.

Each school year, members of the student body raise both funds and awareness for St. Jude’s Hospital as a tribute to the memory of a beloved UMS-Wright student Krisanna Roberts, who heroically battled cancer and inspired countless students and adults through her example. Historically, UMS-Wright parents and alumni have set the example for other community members by donating personal time and personal resources to help a wide range of worthy organizations that make the quality of life in Mobile better for all residents.

UMS-Wright faculty members dedicated to their profession and, more significantly, to their students have been a constant presence on the campus this summer. In June, training sessions to introduce the staff to their new MacBook Air devices began and continued throughout the summer as they prepared for the school-wide utilization of comparable electronic devices by these teachers and their students in the future. Each session was packed with educators eager to use their summers to strengthen their instructional skills. Just as many faculty members took part in exciting workshops introducing the implementation of STEM technology in science classrooms while science teachers conducted camps in which students actually used the STEM curriculum for summer enrichment.

Combined with the number of teachers who worked in their classrooms throughout the summer, the constant activity and enthusiasm of this passionate group helped to create a sense of anticipation for the start of the 2014-15 school year. These activities provided yet another example of how to devote one’s time and energy to help others.

So much has happened on the UMS-Wright campus since the conclusion of the past school year that an accurate description of the sense of the excitement which exists is difficult to provide for those who were not involved during June and July.

Hopefully all members of the school family will be inspired by the efforts of so many selfless educators and will dedicate themselves to being a blessing to others each day. By doing so, they will be amazed by the rewards they will receive as a result of putting the welfare of others first.

UMS-Wright faculty and staff demonstrate their dedication to others on a daily basis by eagerly taking any opportunity to extend their efforts beyond their professional duties to help both students and fellow educators. These remarkable individuals have helped create a culture in which it is the norm to give selflessly.

On May 22nd, Robert Hope, Chairman of the UMS-Wright Board of Trustees, made the following remarks to the members of the UMS-Wright Class of 2014.

Thank you Dr. Havard, parents, friends, faculty and staff, and certainly the Class of 2014. It is again an honor and a privilege to say a few words about this class that has 92 members, 43 young women and 49 young men. It is a very opportunistic class. Members of the Class of 2014 will attend colleges and universities all across the country. They will attend Tulane University on our Gulf Coast, the University of Wisconsin on the Great Lakes, Yale University on the East Coast, and the University of Southern California on the Pacific Coast. Two members of the class will attend, on merit scholarships, Penn State University and Tuskegee University as the first two UMS-Wright students to attend these great universities since the merger of UMS and Julius T. Wright in 1988. Members of the Class of 2014 were accepted to 71 different colleges and universities, and 85% of the graduates were offered merit-based scholarships totaling $8.5 million.

In academics, arts, athletics, and community service; the Class of 2014 has left a positive mark on UMS-Wright, and this is in large part due to the members’ ability to take advantage of opportunities. Opportunity is defined as “a situation or condition favorable for attainment of a goal.”

Opportunities are conspicuous all over the place here at UMS-Wright, and this class has taken advantage of them in part because of the excellent faculty and staff at this school.

It is imperative that, in order to be successful in life, a young person be prepared to answer the door when opportunity knocks. The faculty and staff of UMS-Wright have prepared this class to answer the knock.

Congratulations on successfully taking advantage of the opportunities that have helped you achieve your goals thus far. You have, both individually and as a class, achieved great successes; but obviously the road of life doesn’t end here. In fact, you are now setting out on an even more challenging time. Even with the bigger challenges facing you as you go forward in life, success will be dictated by your ability to create, recognize, and take advantage of opportunity. The only way to climb the ladder of success is to use the rungs of opportunity which will be available to you. So, to the Class of 2014, please remember these three facts about opportunity.

First, change will create opportunity. You are all about to go through one of the biggest, if not the biggest change in your life as you leave UMS-Wright and head off to college.

Change can be uncomfortable and even frightening. Change can freeze people in their progression in life, and this can lead to missed opportunities. Arguably, there is nothing more damaging in life than a missed opportunity. The Class of 2014 should be confident that they are prepared for the change that is coming, and, as a result of that preparation, they will be ready to take advantage of more and bigger opportunities in college and beyond.

Second, never forget that, as strange as it may sound, failure also creates opportunity. We have all had failures in our past, and we will have more failures in our future. How we deal with the failures will help define our success in life. As the great industrialist Henry Ford put it, “Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.”

Don’t be afraid to fail because at some point in life you will, and when you do, be ready for the opportunity it creates.

Finally, YOU can make opportunity happen. Create opportunity for yourself! If opportunity doesn’t knock, then build a door so that it will. Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” Work to create your own opportunity and don’t sit and wait on it.

The Class of 2014 has reached an impressive goal here tonight. They have created, recognized, and ,most importantly, taken advantage of opportunity so far. I congratulate them on that. I know they will continue to take advantage of opportunity. So to the Class of 2014 I say, “You gotta bring it and you gotta bring it every day.” “It” is the desire, the determination, and the focus to better yourself in mind, body, and spirit. If you do that, if you really do that; you will have opportunity. You have proven that you know how to take advantage of opportunity.

Again, congratulations to the Class of 2014.

On September 23, 2011, UMS-Wright re-dedicated the historic Leatherbury Track as Galle-Leatherbury Track by opening the newly renovated facility for all to enjoy. Over 30 years ago, the Leatherbury family generously donated funds to complete the first track on what was then the UMS campus and is today the expanded campus of UMS-Wright. With the renovations in 2011 came the opportunity to add Coach Pat Galle’s name, as the UMS-Wright family wanted to express gratitude for the thousands of student-athletes he’s influenced throughout our school. To date, his teams have earned 62 State Championships in his 42 years as head coach of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams at UMS and UMS-Wright.

Every student at UMS-Wright, no matter what age, takes a turn running on the school’s track, and many of them find that they have a talent which will be fully realized under the tutelage of coaches such as Pat Galle. The new track will help current and future generations of UMS-Wright students reap the benefits and experience the fun of hard work and healthy competition.

The end of 2013 brought the conclusion of the Galle-Leatherbury Track Campaign - a huge success which raised $378,718.48! We would like to thank all of our donors, who are listed in the Annul Report, for their generous support.

Service Update During the 2013-14 school year, Middle and High School students amassed over 13,000 service hours sharing their time and manpower with a variety of organizations in our community. To name a few: At the Bay Area Food Bank, the 9th grade packed and sorted enough food to feed approximately 100,000 people. At Camp Grace, the 8th graders built and sold enough picnic tables, Adirondack chairs, and shooting houses to give $3,500 to Camp Smile and $3,500 to United Cerebral Palsy. The Key Club raised over $8,000 dollars for the American Cancer Society in support of Relay for Life. A Holiday Goods Drive collected items for Goodwill to support a variety of their programs including their Child Development Center, reading program, GED tutoring, physical therapy for children with special needs, camps, and job training. Our school hosted the Alabama Kidney Foundation’s Walk-A-Thon, an event that raised over $100,000.

The Optimist Club hosted parties and fun activities for Dumas Wesley Community Center several times throughout the year.

LOWER SCHOOL Within the Lower School, each grade performs at least one service project a year to support organizations such as The Salvation Army, the Ransom Café Annual Candy Cane Christmas, the Government Street Presbyterian Church Annual Coffee Club Christmas Party, Wilmer Hall, Westminster Assisted Living Home, Penelope House, and the Child Advocacy Center. During the holidays, they also collected over 685 pounds of food for the Bay Area Food Bank “Can Do Good” holiday drive.

community Dedication to service spans all ages at our school. From the beginning of K4, students learn the importance of service to the community – an emphasis that builds year after year with greater expectation of each student as they grow.

LOWER SCHOOL

Throughout the year, the Lower School Art faculty – Mrs. Holberg (art) and Mrs. Howze (music) work to encourage and develop skills in our youngest of students.

Students in all grade levels are able to showcase their talents in the visual arts through art exhibits and then in the performing arts through plays, choral performances and the annual 4th grade recorder concert. The Lower School Chorus, the Allegro Singers, also share their voices throughout the community and this past holiday season made a return trip to the Governor’s Mansion. Each of these carefully rehearsed performances and perfected works of art bring much delight to the students’ parents, grandparents, and special friends.

STUDIO ART

Four AP Studio Art students received scholarship money to enter the arts programs at the respective universities they will enter in this fall - Kaitlin Barker, Paiton Goodwin, Caroline King, and Payton Reedy.

The Art Guild, spearheaded by its president Paiton Goodwin (12th), cleaned and repaired the existing mural in the second floor stairwell of Wright Hallway as its project this year.

FORENSICS

John Walker (11th) won first place in the Regional Coastal America Oceanic Contest held annually to promote an awareness of the vital importance of protecting the Earth’s waters. His graphite drawing of a storm moving from sea onto land is now on view in Washington, D.C.

Patrick Howze (10th) is the first student to advance to a national tournament, The National Catholic Forensic League, since the merger of Julius T. Wright and UMS.

CHORUS

The Wright Singers earned all Superior ratings at the State Choral Performance Assessment.

All-State Honors six students – Brock Hughes (12th), Bailey Sawyer (12th), Janie Chow (11th), Alaina Garsed (11th), Lydia Henry (11th), and Mary Elizabeth Howze (7th).

BAND

Straight Superiors in all areas (stage and sight reading) at the State Band Music Performance Assessment.

YEARBOOK 10

Yearbook pages were chosen for Herff-Jones’s design collection book, Discoveries, which is shown throughout the nation as an example of good graphic design, typography, theme development, and content.

DRAMA

Theatre Guild won six of 13 trophies awarded to our district at the State Theatre Festival including: State Championship in Studio Theatre with one All-Star Cast member, State Trophies for four duet performances in acting, and one in playwriting

COACH CURTIS Al.com recently named Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Terry Curtis one of the “five winningest” Active High School football coaches in Coastal Alabama, and he is currently fifth on the state list of active head coaches. In his 41 years of coaching, he has spent 25 as a head coach at Shaw, Murphy, and UMS-Wright since 1999. As he enters the 2014 season, his overall record is 244-76, with a playoff record of 54-17. In 14 of his 15 years as Head Coach at UMS-Wright, Coach Curtis’ teams have advanced to at least the Quarter Finals of the State Playoffs. During his 15 years at UMS-Wright, he has won five State Championships and compiled a record of 166-41, with a playoff record of 47-10. During his tenure as Athletic Director, 77 State Championships have been won by UMS-Wright Athletic teams. Throughout his career at UMS-Wright, Coach Curtis has been named the Alabama Sports Writer’s Association 4A Coach of the Year, the Mobile Register Coach of the Year, the Optimist Club Coach of the Year, and the 2012 ALFCA Coach of the Year. Coach Curtis is a member of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame, and the UMS-Wright Athletic Hall of Fame.

KNOWING HOW TO

WIN

A few facts you may know: Coach Curtis wears a straw hat to practice.

His practices are the same each day of every week.

On game day, he keeps his players in close quarters after the bell rings until warm-ups begin.

His Friday routine is always the same, including his pregame nap.

He surrounds himself with an excellent coaching staff.

He keeps the old school tradition of wearing a tie on the field every Friday night.

A FEW FACTS YOU MAY NOT KNOW: On the bookshelf in his office, he has a rock from each season he has coached at UMS-Wright.

He carries the same rock in his pocket all season for good luck.

He has worn the same shoes since 1999 when he started coaching at UMS-W, and he wears the same pair of socks every Friday night.

He loves Diet Dr. Pepper.

He and his wife Jeanie eat at the same restaurant every Wednesday night during a winning streak, and he eats the same meal each week. In 2005, he ate at Big Time Diner for 15 straight weeks!

He’s not superstitious, he just “doesn’t want to take any chances!”

He says “Un-be-lievable!” about a million times a game.

There are only seven people who have rings from all five of his championships. Can you name them? Coach Curtis has two former players on his coaching staff this year. Who are they?

Farewells UMS-Wright Hires Patricia Boehm as Lower School Principal Patricia Boehm joins the UMS-Wright family as the new Lower School Principal.

Her educational background includes a B.S. in Elementary Education from Miami University of Ohio, an M. Ed. in Elementary Education from High Point University in North Carolina, and an Ed.D., which is near completion, from High Point University.

She has extensive experience in teaching, curriculum development, teacher supervision, and technology applications. She has served as a teacher, lead teacher, assistant principal, curriculum and instruction specialist, and as Teacher Recruitment and Support Director for the Davidson County School District in North Carolina.

Boehm, along with her husband and two children, joined the UMS-Wright family in June.

Foy Hannum: Putting a Whole New Spin upon Lifetime Learning UMS-Wright Introduces New Academic Support Department UMS-Wright will implement a number of exciting additions to its academic program in 2014-15. One of the most anticipated additions is the new Academic Support Department.

The department is comprised of four fulltime faculty members who all have extensive experience and great expertise, and their efforts will certainly have a profound impact on the academic successes of all students.

Under the leadership of Sonya Yates, Academic Support Director and Certified Academic Language Therapist, this department will help the administration closely monitor the progress of all students and will work with classroom teachers to address any gaps in student achievement which are identified. One component of Academic Support is providing instruction for students with mild to moderate learning differences such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and academic issues caused by ADHD. These students possess ample ability to succeed in a rigorous curriculum and benefit greatly from the use of targeted instructional strategies and simple classroom accommodations. Academic Support will assist all students in reaching their full potential without the need to modify the school’s college prep curriculum or lower expectations for any students.

Another significant aspect of Academic Support involves a partnership with the Neuhaus Education Center of Houston, Texas, a national leader in teacher training and curriculum development. In July and August, the members of the Academic Support staff, along with language arts teachers from grades 4-8, took part in training sessions with staff members from the Neuhaus Center. All students in grades 4-8 will use Neuhaus Academy to improve their vocabulary skills in their language arts class. During the school year, Academic Support faculty will maintain regular contact with the Neuhaus Center and continue their training sessions. Academic Support is yet another means of improving instruction for all students and of ensuring that UMS-Wright remains in a constant state of improvement.

About a week after the UMS-Wright class of 2014 had received their diplomas and tossed their mortar boards and bouquets into the air, I spoke with friend and colleague, Foy Hannum, about her own graduation from almost a half century of teaching, the last forty-four years of which were at Julius T. Wright and UMS-Wright. She shared wonderful stories and insights about her decision to teach, her most vivid and important memories from her illustrious career, and the best advice she can offer to practicing and prospective teachers.

Foy Clark, the daughter of a GM automobile dealer and a house wife and voice major, grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, the eldest in a family of two sisters and a brother.

Quite precocious, she attended kindergarten at age four in a pre-Civil War Presbyterian Church. Her teacher would later point out that when the class painted outdoors in the cemetery next to the church, Foy always chose to sit upon the gravestone of President Woodrow Wilson (I surmise this to be an uncanny predictor that she would later receive a fellowship for study at Princeton as a Woodrow Wilson master teacher). With considerable pride, Foy notes she has been in school ever since she attended kindergarten at four. Her obvious affinity for teaching showed up early as well: her siblings and the neighborhood children became her first pupils at a schoolroom she ran in their house.

So, steeped in the lessons of southern history and influenced by a string of inspirational history teachers in high school ( “I never had a bad one,” she states emphatically), Foy naturally gravitated toward the study of history at Women’s College, UNC, and the University of South Carolina, where she earned a Masters with a concentration in South Carolina colonial history.

Fresh out of grad school in 1966 and married only two days, Foy began her first job in a public high school in Columbia at the height of racial tension over desegregation. She will never forget the first friend she made there, a black home economics teacher who arrived at school as early as she did. Nor will she forget trying to break up a fight between two girls and being thrown down the steps and banged up against the wall before her principal intervened, fussing at her for foolishly getting involved. While she may be small in frame and soft spoken, Foy Hannum has never lacked in conviction.

Nor has she been easily rattled in the fray.

Teaching, Foy will tell you, is not for the faint of heart or spirit. Nor, in her opinion, should it be for those who do not view it as a true vocation. She believes that the best teachers are those who are in it for the long haul, who recognize that it is a special calling, a profession more valuable than any other. There would be no doctors or lawyers without teachers, she points out as unequivocal proof that she’s right. Looking back on her career, she wouldn’t have done much differently. She wouldn’t have been a college professor, and she certainly wouldn’t have taught anything but history, most especially U.S. History.

Foy Hannum will quickly tell you that history is a “messy subject” requiring students to pull from multiple sources, to recognize that there must always be more than one way to approach a problem, that “there are no easy answers to hard questions.” Her great goal has been to keep her students’ minds open and cognizant using a variety of methods to teach critical thinking. Having students read a chapter and answer the questions is simply not enough. Her greatest reward has been to witness the “aha” moments when her students suddenly begin to make connections. An unexpected pleasure has been that the material has never grown old for her, that each school year she has discovered wondrous new perspectives on understanding the march of history.

No wonder she has inspired those she has taught.

Ask her students and they will tell you that Mrs. Hannum is impassioned about her subject. She knows the players in American history so intimately that she speaks of them as if they are old friends, describing them in ways that brings them to life. They understand the great privilege it is to have learned from a master teacher. A long string of accomplishments and accolades testify to her expertise: fellowships at numerous colleges, including St. Andrews in Scotland and at Harvard; a Friends of Fulbright fellowship to Japan; a seat on the Council of Basic Education for Independent Studies in the Humanities; inductions into Phi Alpha Theta history honorary, Who’s Who in American Education, and Cum Laude for faculty; the Claus Nobel Teacher of Distinction Award; APUS History Reader, able Leader, and Presenter. During her Stratford Hall

Fellowship delving into 18th century America, she slept on The Lawn at the University of Virginia and performed as a kitchen wench in Colonial Williamsburg.

She even worked as a research scholar at the FDR Presidential Library where she handled Dorothea Lange’s famous photography of the Great Depression.

No matter where she goes in the world – the London Tube, the airport in Fiji – it tickles her that she always runs into young people she has taught. She regrets that with retirement and after this year’s juniors, she will lose that special connection. She will miss the excitement of starting over again each fall and embracing the challenge of individualizing instruction to suit a class’s personality.

Probably the very best part of teaching at the same school for forty-four years, she muses, is that some of her best collegial friends were once her students. She notes what “a unique experience” it has been “to watch Frances [Rouse], Meridy [Jones], Molly [Nordmann], and Amanda [Inge] grow up to become my colleagues, to teach their children and watch them grow up.”

She values the close relationships she has made with fellow teachers who have hung around. “I am glad that Woody and I stayed in Mobile.” So are we.

Lest you think that she is really going into “retirement,” Foy will continue to better the community on the History Museum Board, in the All Saints vestry and choir, on the board of Wilmer Hall and Murray House. She may even develop her master’s thesis on South Carolina’s colonial history into a longer piece, or perhaps co-author a book with Woody about the Episcopal Church in American history. In the meantime, she’ll continue to be devoted mother to her daughter, Ari, and grandmother to Ellie, 10, and Allen, 6, attending their performances and special events at UMS-Wright.

And so the past gives way to the present and future. Foy Hannum leaves behind a legacy of excellence and an unprecedented dedication to our school. No words can adequately thank her for her service. The best we can and must do is to follow her example so that we may ensure a healthy and prosperous future for our alma mater .

Watching the transformation of the students from the time they enter as 6th graders and leave as young men and women at the end of their 8th grade year. Knowing that I played even a tiny role in their lives makes me happy. what is your favorite memory - working with students? All of the service days hold favorite memories because I get to see the students out of their natural environment, the classroom. Leaders begin to emerge, and it’s often the students one would least suspect. The students’ faces light up as they are helping others, and then they come back to school and get to share their experiences. It’s at that moment when you realize they understand how blessed they are to attend UMS-Wright.

These faces are quite often the first that students see as they jump out of the car in carpool line or as they walk through the doors of Wright Hall or the E.A. Roberts Building. These faces belong to three special ladies, who dedicate their days and often their evenings to our students, whether good or bad, they are there to celebrate or simply to listen. Their guidance and support for the individual student as well as a classroom full of students has been remarkable. Many of you have been fortunate enough to work with these ladies. In case you’ve not had the privilege, let us introduce Mrs. Schoenvogel, Mrs. Stewart, and Mrs. Jones.

You are most proud of our students when? When a student who has been struggling with a class comes up to me and shows me a good grade. The student is beaming and so proud of his/her accomplishments, and it just makes me feel like a proud “Mom.” Then that one good grade begins a chain of even more good grades. The whole demeanor of the student changes into a positive one, and this can be seen in every aspect of the child’s life. It’s nice to know that I can be the cheerleader in these students’ lives.

From pairing my child with the perfect “buddy,” to giving out candy bars with messages of encouragement, Mrs. Stewart was amazing at dissipating the fear normally found with transitioning from another school. I am still in awe at how she could answer my e-mails before I even finished writing them!! Having students that are struggling and being able to help guide them through a problem and find the answer. Seeing that sense of relief on their faces is one of the many things that mean the most to me.

You are most proud of our students when? They are giving it their all and being kind to each other. Bucket Fillers!

Why is UMS-Wright special to you? UMS-Wright is my home!

I am a graduate and loved this school as a student and am blessed to have the opportunity to continue to love it as a faculty member and parent!

Blair has been a blessing both to our family and to our UMS-Wright family.

She is an advocate for each child with whom she works and each is acutely aware that she is in their corner. As a result, she has a remarkable degree of trust and rapport with our children.

The programs that Blair has introduced to the lower school at UMS have made a tangible positive difference in the classroom and on the social dynamics of the students she counsels. Our children are growing up in a unique time. They have to navigate unchartered waters, technologically and socially speaking. Blair meets those challenges head-on while bringing a basic sense of kindness into how she approaches her job. It is clear that she loves what she does and that she loves our children. Mrs. Meridy Jones – Upper School Education: B.S., University of Alabama | M. Ed., University of South Alabama When did you begin your career at UMS-Wright?

1981. I received a phone call from Gus Hamner, who was Headmaster of Julius T. Wright (where I graduated from in 1976) after I graduated from college. He said, “Now that you have graduated: 1. Congratulations and 2. I have a spot waiting for you!”

What is your favorite part of your job, overall?

There are so many favorite things about my job that I can’t name just one! As someone once wrote: “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.” I truly feel that way. I love the connection I feel with my students and their parents, and there is nothing like the feeling of walking in my office and having students waiting to talk to me.

What is your favorite memory – working with students?

I love those light bulb moments when a student makes a positive choice and the pieces make sense; I love hearing from former students and maintaining the relationships we built so long ago. One of my favorite visuals is when I have a group of students sitting in my office discussing whatever is on their minds with me - from college to course selections to TV shows to boyfriend situations to prom outfits!

You are most proud of our students when…

When they “play the game with honor” and realize that a pattern of small positive choices made now will become large positive choices later.

I love it when they are proud of themselves for a choice they made, and they share it with me.

Why is UMS-Wright special to you?

UMS-Wright is special to me because it is HOME. This place is in my heart and soul, and I take personal ownership in it. When I simply hear the words “UMS-Wright” or see those words in print, I feel as if someone is referring to a family member!

Every time I see Mrs. Jones in the hallway it makes me want to smile. Her good attitude is contagious and inviting; she is one of those people who you see and immediately think “I’d love to be friends with her.” She is such a light and makes everyday at UMS brighter.

We are proud to introduce a new comprehensive education program.

STEM

STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy.

Over the summer, a series of STEM Camps were offered to give students a preview of what to expect this year. Students from all three divisions of the school participated in team-based missions and hands-on activities, such as engineering, robotics, and building with Legos. The learning modules used in STEM and demonstrated at camp promote the use of problem-solving and investigative skills and require students to work together, ask questions, observe, and reach conclusions. Parents were also invited for an informational session where they were able to ask questions and experience the STEM lab for themselves. Almost 200 students participated in the camps over the course of two weeks.

UMS-Wright has teamed up with Pitsco Education, a leader in providing STEM-related educational products, to spearhead the effort in the Mobile community to focus on STEM-related studies as well as those soft skills such as communication and teamwork that are essential to success in the modern workforce. Students will learn using STEM techniques starting in Kindergarten and will continue more focused and developed efforts in the later elementary, middle school and upper school grades. Kindergarteners will be introduced to STEM concepts through play, while middle school students will rotate through twelve interactive lab experiences during the course of the year. STEM-related fields represent critical career opportunities for students.

We firmly believe that using STEM education will equip our students with the necessary skills to be successful in their career and to be leaders in their community.

Students will not only be introduced to critical academic concepts, but they will also have the ability to apply the knowledge learned to real-world problems and experiences. In addition to acquiring knowledge and skills, students will also further develop their “soft skills,” such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. The new STEM education curriculum will affect students in all three divisions of UMS-Wright.

As early as K5 students will be introduced to STEM concepts through play in a program called “STEM in the Gym.” Students in the lower grades will be introduced to “Early Structures,” “Early Simple Machines,” and “Simple Machines.”

In grades 3-5, Pitsco Mission Labs will be utilized in the science curriculum as will “Lego Robotics.”

Modular STEM/science labs have been installed in the middle school classrooms.

The 2013 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on November 1, 2013. We were proud to honor the 2013 inductees: Adam Hardy ’00, Randy Koffler ’68, Terry Curtis, Forrest Crabtree ‘97, Alice Johnston Parker ’00, and Forress Rayford, Jr. ’03. Each of these individuals was recognized for outstanding contributions to the UMS and UMS-Wright sports programs as well as their athletic successes in college and their careers.

The 2014 Arts Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on February 13, 2014 in Dunlap Auditorium. Each inductee gave a speech of inspiration to the student body. We are thrilled to announce Howard M. Schramm, Jr. as our 2014 Alumnus of the Year. He graduated from University Military School in 1960 followed by Washington and Lee University in 1964 and the University of Alabama Law School in 1967. After law school, Schramm began his career with Turner Supply Company where he remains today as Chairman of the Board and CEO. His tenure there was interrupted by two years of service in Vietnam with the United States Army. Schramm has continued to share his time and talents with UMSWright throughout the years. He has served on the Board of Trustees, the Academic Boosters Club, and also as the voice of UMS-Wright Homecoming. He has been very involved in the Band, Choral, and Theatre departments since the early ‘80s. Schramm’s current civic involvement includes serving on the board of directors of the Mobile Carnival Association Board, the Hearin Carnival Museum, and the Sons of the American Revolution. Schramm and his wife, Beth, have two children, both graduates of UMSWright and four grandchildren.

Bradley Byrne ‘73

Alumni Profile Congratulations to Representative Bradley Byrne ‘73 who was elected to represent Alabama’s First Congressional District in Congress! He was elected in December 2013 to complete the term of Congressman Jo Bonner. Byrne was born and raised in Mobile where his family has lived since his great-great grandfather, Gerald Byrne, settled in Southwest Alabama in the 1780’s. He attended University Military School and graduated in 1973. While there, he earned the rank of Captain, served on the Cadet Staff and the Battalion Review Staff, and was a member of the Key Club. He also sang in the Chorus and played football. He commanded the Best Drill Company in the Brigade his senior year. He continued his education at Duke University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy and History. In 1980, he graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law. For his continued support to UMS-Wright, Byrne was named the 2008 Alumnus of the Year. Byrne served on the Alabama State Board of Education, in the Alabama State Senate, and as Chancellor of the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education prior to being elected to Congress.

During his time in Congress, Representative Byrne has continually fought for the people of Southwest Alabama. He has been assigned to committees that directly benefit his district. Given the numerous challenges facing the nation’s military abroad and the importance of shipbuilder Austal USA to the community, Congressman Byrne asked for a seat on the House Armed Services Committee.

Byrne also serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources, which puts him in a strong position to look out for the interests of coastal communities, like the Red Snapper season and oil and gas production in the Gulf. Finally, Congressman Byrne is Alabama’s only member serving on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, an assignment that is personal to him given his prior work on the State School Board and as chancellor of Alabama’s two-year college system.

While much of his time on these committees and in Congress has focused on major issues impacting our country, like illegal immigration, the crisis in Iraq, and continued budget deficits, Congressman Byrne worked to include language in the National Defense Authorization Act, which supports the Littoral Combat Ship, built locally in Mobile. He is fighting to expand the drastically shortened nine-day Red Snapper season by extending our state waters and giving more control to Gulf States in the process. Congressman Byrne continues to push the Federal Highway Administration to move the process forward on construction of a new I-10 bridge over the Mobile River.

Congressman Byrne has been married to his wife, Rebecca, for 32 years, and is the proud father of four children: Patrick, Kathleen, Laura, and Colin.

What was your first job?

Ever? Washing boats at Grady Marine. Out of college? Management training program with Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, NC.

What was the “Aha” moment that pushed you to pursue your idea and become a full-time entrepreneur?

My second job was with a small, entrepreneurial wealth management firm. While I was working there, not only was I heavily involved in all aspects of the business - from sales model to HR policies- I had also started a small e-commerce site with some buddies from Vanderbilt. I loved the experience I got in both, especially taking an idea from concept to operating company. It was awesome, and I knew then that I was likely going to build my career in that type of environment.

After five years of working, I decided to go back to business school at UNC Kenan-Flagler with a focus on entrepreneurship. I got involved in the entire startup ecosystem while there, spending time working on both the operations and investment side of building companies. Through my work with a digital health startup, I found a disturbing stat that showed active play plummeted from a peak of three hours a day at age nine to only 43 minutes a day by the time kids reached age 14. The fact that kids weren’t playing in the traditional sense really bothered me. Play was such a critical part of my childhood- from team sports like basketball to creative games like dungeon chase in the neighborhood. All of those providing such great experiences as a kid.

At about the same time I found that stat, I came across some exciting technology that led me to begin playing around with new ways to use that tech to spark more excitement for kids to get out and have fun. I got great feedback and was having a blast working with kids, parents and coaches in an effort to tackle this massive social and economic problem. I knew then that I was doing something special. After securing some small startup capital and getting the buy-in from my wife and family, I went all in.

What is the most interesting thing you have experienced through your career path?

If you asked alumnus Coleman Greene ’00 what he would be when he grew up, entrepreneur was not top on his list. After receiving his B.S. from Vanderbilt University, Coleman spent the first part of his career in financial services, working in both sales and management. He started in a management training program with Wachovia Bank before taking a role with a private wealth management firm that had recently spun out of Merrill Lynch. There he not only helped manage the firm’s existing $800 million in assets, but he also successfully built up his own book of business.

In 2008, he realized his entrepreneurial passion for bringing ideas to life when he launched his first company, Dore Duds. He then pursued an MBA from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler, where he was president of the Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club and a Carolina Venture Fellow with Parish Capital.

Greene is now the Founder and CEO of Sqord, Inc., his newest entrepreneurial venture. He and his wife, Courtney, have three children: Caroline, Mac, and Elizabeth.

The startup path has opened up some amazing opportunities and learnings along the way. There are a lot of highs and lows as part of that process, some maybe more interesting than others. I think the one that stands out as my most interesting experience came during the 2013 summer.

That summer, Sqord was selected to participate in a program called Techstars. This particular group provides investment capital and hands-on mentorship to young technology companies. They have locations across the world and are considered to be the best at what they do- Sqord was selected as as one of 10 companies out of over 900 applications. We participated in their Chicago program, and the group requires that you move the company in order to get full access to their network.

That meant in order to participate in this intensive four-month business bootcamp of sorts, I had to move away from my family while my wife, who was pregnant with our third child, and twins stayed back in North Carolina. On the one hand, I was incredibly homesick and missed my family. But on the other hand, I was around some of the best and brightest people I’ve ever met, all that were doing /have done amazing things.

This was all taking place in one of the greatest cities out there. Overall, it was an amazing experience, but my wife probably remembers it a little differently...

What advice would you give yourself in high school?

Hug your teachers - what they do is amazing. Be curious in everything - ask more questions and try to learn inside AND outside of the classroom.

How do you feel UMS-Wright prepared you for both your personal and professional life?

“Play the game with honor, in our work and in our play.” That discipline of setting high goals for yourself and relentlessly pursuing them while also making sure you never lose sight of what really matters. I think UMS-W does a great job of instilling that approach in their students and is something that will set students up for success at home and at work.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

My Dad had a lot of great one-liners, kind of Eddie Greene-isms. Some of them were sports related, like “tape up your ankles and go.” Some of them a little bit more random, like “find your rut and get in it.” All of them, though, were centered around the importance of hard work and perseverance. I think those two traits will take you far in whatever career you pursue in life.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Good question. I think it was a lot of the standard stuff like a lawyer or doctor with a few stretch dreams of playing pro hoops. I guess the closest I was to really being excited about a career was as a doctor during my glory days of being a Science Olympian (that’s right) in 5th grade.

I was big on knowing all the bones. I could name them all and had a little mini skeleton (still in my mom’s attic) that I would practice on. But that faded pretty fast, I think. Aside from loving to draw/doodle and being my dad’s tinkering sidekick on projects around the house, there certainly weren’t any indications I would end up being an “entrepreneur.”

On September 25, 2013, Walt Holman ’50 received the Buz Buszek Memorial Award, which is the most prestigious award that the International Federation of Fly Fishers bestows upon an individual. Walt is a retired professional engineer and lives in Madison, Al with his wife, Gennie.

Roland Rush ‘51 recently had back surgery, but he is still looking forward to working in his daylily beds.

W. Earle Smith, Jr. ‘52 has retired as a Navy Captain after serving 35 years in the Navy. He graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1957.

Richard Murray ‘53 states he is enjoying good health. He and his wife have six grandchildren out of school and working and eight still in school.

Joe Eskridge ’65 is enjoying his retirement from Wika Instruments as National Sales Manager.

Suzanne Jones ’97 married Ty Prince in December 2013. In May, she was elected president of the Jr. League of Knoxville.

Marty Irby ’97 is currently working in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill as Press Secretary for Congressman Ed Whitfield, Chairman of the Energy and Power Committee, from the First District of Kentucky. In addition, he handles all legislative animal welfare issues for the Congressman and is working on passing the PAST (Prevent All Soring Tactics) Act, HR 1518/S 1406. The bill is designed to stop abuse in the Tennessee Walking, Racking and Spotted Saddle Horse breeds. He was also recently featured in The Huffington Post and on Dateline Australia for his work in ending horse abuse.

In May, Dr. Russell Geisenheimer ’97 graduated from William Carey University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. He previously received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Spring Hill College and his Master’s in Medical Science from Mississippi College. He will begin his residency in family medicine in late June at Northeast Regional Medical Center in Missouri.

He won the Outstanding Junior Researcher of the Year, which is given to the one Assistant Professor in the Business School who has the best overall publication record for the 2013-2014 academic year. He also received the Outstanding Publication of the Year, which is given to one professor in the Business School who has the best single journal publication for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Ashton Creel ’10 has been accepted into the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Master of Science of Health Administration program. This program is ranked fifth in the nation, and only thirty applicants were selected.

Andrew Long ’10 is a senior at Auburn majoring in Civil Engineering. He got married on June 8, 2014.

Creative team names, colorful uniforms, and lively team members gave the crowd lots of kicks. Team We got ‘99 problems but pitching ain’t one won best uniform, but they couldn’t take the heat and lost in the semi-finals. The red team’s Bruner Binion kicked one over the heads of the outfielders on the green team to bring home Jay Davison and Cliff Kennedy to win the championship 6-5. The competition was fierce!
