A Message from Dr. Charles B. Nemeroff Chairman, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences

As the year draws to a close, I must take a moment to hit “pause” and look back on the remarkable accomplishments we have witnessed in the last 12 months.

None of our attained major milestones in 2017 would have been reached without all of your continued support and generosity. It is my belief that all of you have closely followed the now oft-quoted biblical passage from Luke 12:48 “to whom much is given, much shall be required.”

Together we have implemented the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Interactive Screening Program for our medical students, gained approval from the state to build our new comprehensive behavioral health campus, improved our NIH research grant ranking among Departments of Psychiatry nationwide and held a very successful and growing golf tournament. In an increasingly challenging time for mental health, our ability to actionize these life-saving initiatives are made possible by your selfless contributions and steadfast belief that we are in pursuit of the same common purpose—transforming lives through teaching, research and service.

If I’ve learned anything in my 30+ years as a psychopharmacologist, it is that no one is immune to the weight of mental health disorders. While one in five people will suffer from mental illness, the other four will more than likely be affected by the detriments of depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and the other illnesses that grip our families, friends, communities and our nation.

However, I know that with your ongoing commitment, we will continue to fuel the scientific change that will propel the next generation of treatments and therapies into the clinics.

As you read this publication, I hope you will take as much pride as I do in knowing What You Helped Us Achieve in 2017.

Clinical trials are the backbone of evidence-based medicine.

Broadly speaking, clinical trials evaluate the safety and eectiveness of a medical strategy, treatment, or device. Moreover, clinical trials provide an opportunity for the general public to participate in the process of developing novel treatments for a variety of conditions. The results from these clinical trials provide the data necessary to assist in future medical decision-making.

2 new major initiatives:

The Psychopharmacology Mentorship Program

A privately funded program established to offer select junior faculty member(s) in the department the opportunity for formal mentorship under our world-renowned psychopharmacologist and department Chairman Dr. Charles Nemeroff.

The program is designed to span two years with no more than three mentees enrolled simultaneously.

At a time when the field of psychiatry is in the midst of a severe workforce crisis and 1 in 5 adults is afflicted by a mental illness, it is critical that we expertly train the next generation of leaders.

The Interactive Screening Program

The Interactive Screening Program is a confidential online service that offers students the opportunity to complete a questionnaire and submit it anonymously for review by a licensed mental health professional. The overarching goal is to prevent suicide on campus, and enhance student wellness by helping students identify—and do something about—stress, anxiety, depression and other issues that can interfere with academic, social and personal functioning.

The implementation of this program on the medical school campus was made possible thanks to your contributions to our 2016 Inaugural Golf Tournament.

Hosted Grand Rounds sessions given different by esteemed speakers from institutions around the world Psychiatry Grand Rounds Lecture Series takes place on the UM Miller School of Medicine campus. Each lecture is 60-90 minutes and presented by departmental chairpersons of prestigious universities, eminent scholars and distinguished professors from the most renowned medical schools and research institutes in this country and abroad.

Topics include the latest research results and most up-to-date advancements in patient treatment modalities.

Thanks to the continued support of The Lasdon Family Foundation, we were able to name the Grand Rounds this year and recognize them as the Cathy and Fred Seligman Grand Rounds.

Amplified Our Impact Each year, thousands of papers are published in various scientific journals across all medical disciplines. Papers published in higher quality journals acquire an impact factor, with impact being defined as ‘the extent to which research is cited in research publications by other researchers.’ Impact factors are dynamic and change over time as articles receive more attention.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has developed a system called i-Cite to index impactful, federally funded research. Federally funded research is known to be to be of the highest quality, because it is extensively reviewed by other experts in the researcher’s field, a process referred to as “peer review.” i-Cite compares the impact of all research articles to the average impact of federally funded research articles, with the 50th percentile being an average i-Cite score.

It is of substantial interest to examine the impact of work conducted at the Department of Psychiatry of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine to see just how influential it has become.
