The annual Student Fashion Show has had many formats and iterations, but has always served as a rite of passage for apparel design seniors. It is a chance to highlight the skills they’ve developed and celebrate their creative point of view.

The show marks the completion of their academic journey, and launches them into varied careers in the apparel industry. This exhibition highlights the evolution of the annual Student Fashion Show and captures the continuing creativity and innovation of our alumni in apparel design, costume design, fiber arts, and the multifaceted, interdisciplinary field of wearable products. Free and open to the public.

LOCAL HONEY | Evan has always been a creative spirit at heart. He is constantly looking for inspiration from anything and everything around him, fueled by excitement and a genuine love for design. The copious amount of movies and television he watched as a child were impactful to his development as a designer. There were many characters and fashion icons portrayed through the lens of their wardrobe, such as Cher Horowitz from Clueless and Grace Jones. Evan aims to design clothing as a tool for women to convey who they are through how they dress and present themselves visually.

Local Honey is designed for the iconic women of social media in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

These women shop locally and responsibly with brands who share their values. Evan created Local Honey out of his love for the Southwest in the 1940’s and 70’s, specifically, the imagery of cowboys and wild horses in the mountains. Evan is reinterpreting the style of the vintage Southwest into a modern day collection for Minneapolis in the spring, making the Southwest local and accessible. The collection is built on a monochromatic color story with simple silhouettes for each woman to find a piece she loves and add it to her current wardrobe. Local Honey is delicate and sweet with a depth of richness that comes from the intricate sewing and construction details paired with golden accents.

ELAINE | “Life is a fashion show” is what nine-year-old Spencer used to tell his mom when strutting through the local grocery store, and he wasn’t wrong. Throughout the past four years Spencer has learned that fashion is a powerful tool to communicate who we think we are and to explore who we aspire to be. Before the program, Spencer shied away from his “flamboyant” impulses both within himself and his designs. That is not the case anymore, he has fully embraced all things dramatic, colorful, sparkly and bold. He strongly believes that a little bit of sparkle goes a long way (but more is always better), and that when you have fun with your clothes it changes how you view yourself and the world around you.

Spencer recently built upon his design skills with an internship at Target and is excited to be joining the team as a designer starting this spring.

Spencer’s designed this collection, titled Elaine, for three generations of his family to connect and make memories through their clothing. The prints, colors, and shapes were inspired by modern children’s storybooks and these elements are repeated throughout the collection, allowing for discovery of how the garments relate to each other. During the creation of this collection Spencer enjoyed reflecting on all the happy memories he has made with his family.

RAINFLOWER | Whimsical. Playful. Soft. Sweetly detailed. These words inspire each new and unique look Stephanie creates. She has been a maker all her life, doodling since she could hold a pencil and experimenting through a variety of different mediums before realizing sewing to be her favorite. Some of Stephanie’s first creations were custom stuffed animals which she continues to make through freelance work. Today, most of her designing happens through fashion because she finds it exciting to play with the limitless details, silhouettes, and materials. Through design, Stephanie hopes to contribute to a more sustainable future in the fashion industry by inviting people to appreciate their clothing season after season.

Looking through fashion history with a nostalgic lens, her aim is to design for anyone who wants to express individuality through playful styles that break away from current trends.

Designed for spring, Rainflower draws inspiration from the styles of ancient China: loose fits, layering, and pleats, with decorative as well as functional ties, reminiscent of the past.

The collection was designed with the intention of layering as a key component so pieces could be added or removed for versatility as the weather changes. Rainflower is history refreshed like flowers after rainfall, blooming again and again.

RADICAL EXISTENCE | An avid writer, Wren discovered her love of apparel design creating characters in her stories and sketching their distinct styles. World travel and social justice are strong themes in her designs. Viewing the world through a queer lens, she strives to bring more LGBTQ+ representation as well as her other social activism passions into the spotlight with her designs. With this perspective in mind and a love for the Spanish language, Wren emanates the wanderlust drive she inherited from her mother and continues to seek out design inspiration by exploring the world.

With several confident plus-size women in her family, Wren dreams of providing aesthetics, support, and confidence to women outside of conventional US sizing. This drive has led her to design plus-size fashion and promote body positivity and diversity of all body types and identities in the media.

Pastel punk 90’s nostalgia meets retro pinup flair in Radical Existence, a custom fit line that shows not all plus-size bodies are the same and not all plus-size women want to blend in. Breaking the fashion rules that curvy women are not supposed to show skin, wear color, pattern, or volume is a small rebellious act to reclaim their space in the world. Heavily influenced by the body positivity community taking a strong stance on social media, Radical Existence supplies plus-size women with many of the statement pieces they cannot find elsewhere in the fashion industry.

DOUBLE-KNIT DOUBLE-DOWN | Ray Myers started out making custom clothes from vintage fabrics through her own online store, never imagining she’d end up where she is today.

She currently works as a consultant to a company that makes wearable medical devices, after discovering the satisfaction that comes from creative problem solving in technical design. She’s on a team with a product designer and an electrical engineer, bringing her apparel design expertise to the table to help make their ideas a reality. She’s especially excited to be part of a new industry with real potential to help improve lives.

Out and proud, Ray has always loved to express herself through her personal style in fun, colorful, funky clothes. She believes that a smart business will appreciate their employees as individuals and make room for creative expression to be celebrated rather than feared.

She designed Double-knit Double-down to give people a way to put a little bit of their own joy into an otherwise standard work wardrobe, and to show that it’s not about how you look but how you perform.

ASCENSION | Emily Seifert loves creating apparel that embodies elegance, comfort, and versatility. She is drawn to relaxed silhouettes. Emily spent the summer interning at TLB Holdings, Inc. as a technical design intern. This internship showed her the relevance of fit within the production of apparel garments. Through her undergraduate research position within the Human Dimensioning Lab the interest of providing better fit flourished. This position helped her to realize that there is a need for improving the fit of personal protection equipment within the trade fields (such as construction and firefighting). She hopes to continue to explore these interests in graduate school at the University of Minnesota.

Ascension was inspired by Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Emily visited this breathtaking location last summer with her husband and sister-in-law. Featuring rich colors, reminiscent of the sunrise off of the ocean, the collection itself reflects polished sophistication. She created these pieces for women who want to feel casual and comfortable. Creating this collection took place during a difficult time in Emily’s life both physically and emotionally. Like the sunrise, she knows this too will pass onto the brightness of daylight. Emily is thankful for the overwhelming support from the faculty, as well as her husband, classmates, family, and friends.

ROAM | Lexine grew up in Iowa City with strong influences from her mother as an artist and her father as a mechanical engineer. From a young age she was exposed to both creative sensibilities, and technical ways of thinking and solving problems. She is excited by the unique opportunity that design creates to utilize these seemingly opposing skill sets.

She sees apparel design as the intersection of art and engineering. This space allows the opportunity to add value, ease, and happiness to people’s everyday lives. She focuses on creating clothing with an attention to detail that elevates everyday clothing beyond choosing between form and function. Most recently she’s explored clothing as engineering while working on the advanced space suit development team in her internship with NASA. Travel has always been a part of Lexine’s life, from studying abroad in the Indian Himalayas at 16, studying in Italy during her junior year, and traveling the US with her family since before she can remember. This line gave her the opportunity to leverage her design skills to solve a problem she knows intimately. Roam is a collection of pieces that can be mixed and matched so that the wearer can take a limited number of items with them and not look like they’re wearing the same outfit every day. The carefully curated textiles in this line allow the opportunity for functional travel clothing that isn’t all black. Practical clothing infused with thoughtful details come together to create a line of travel clothing that doesn’t look like you just hiked off a mountain.

V FOR VICTORY | Rachel has always been drawn to great stories and adventure whether in books, movies, or podcasts. The romantic allure of history has driven her pursuit to know more. An endless curiosity about why and how things work led her to constructing clothing and enjoying the way that figuring out the construction of a garment is much like solving a puzzle. Her introverted nature has influenced her enjoyment of independent pursuits and finding adventure wherever she goes, whether that’s with the people she loves or striking out on her own. These range from costume tailoring here in Minneapolis, to driving solo to Santa Fe to make elaborate dresses for outdoor operas. In her endeavors, she has learned that knowledge makes one powerful and doing things independently makes one free.

Over the summer Rachel interned for Target corporate and was inspired by all the working women that she interacted with. These women were strong and independent with an electrifying work ethic that stimulated Rachel to want the same for herself. Each of the women had intriguing backstories worthy of being told and Rachel concluded that with the right spirit, anything is achievable. In her line, V for Victory, Rachel uses her historical muse of the 1940s as a jumping off point. Each look is meant to make you want to know this woman and yearn to find out more about her. This line highlights the educated, career oriented, independent woman as she ventures out her front door and into her future.

TIDE | Emily Laurich is a visual artist motivated by the appreciation and preservation of an emotional experience. Six years ago, her lifelong love affair with music brought Emily to her first concert where she witnessed an auditory art transform into an extraordinary experience. Wanting to play a part in the thrill of it all, viewer-turned-documenter Emily began her photography career capturing local bands and national touring acts alike. With a desire for harmony in her life, Emily merged her love of music, photography, and apparel when she began designing custom pieces for musicians. She creates compositions that intertwine fashion and music and represent a culture of free-thinking, creative individuals.

Tide is Emily’s headfirst dive into the dreamworld that hosts all of her creative outlets.

By definition, the tide is the alternate rising and falling of the sea. This fixed transition between alternating forces is reminiscent of life itself. The ride of life guarantees up and downs, light and dark; Tide challenges the viewer to pursue what they enjoy regardless of where they are in life. In addition, the collection reflects its name through the use of textiles and color scheme. From hand-making textiles to transforming photographs into prints, Emily put a lot of herself into this.

CHIC CHICA | Ka Ying is a Hmong designer with a passion for creating variety in her designs. At eight years old she learned hand-sewing in Thailand, and later fell in love with designing. Motivated to chase her passion, she entered the University of Minnesota Apparel Design Program. As a student designer, Ka Ying has participated in local fashion shows and took the opportunity to study abroad in both South Korea and London. This international experience broadened her perspective and inspirations for her designs. Ka Ying’s style can be described as comfortable, fun, classy, and trendy. As a designer, her goal is to improve and promote diversity in the fashion industry by creating garments for a wide variety of audiences.

Chic Chica was inspired by the beauty of mixing color, texture, and shape. Ka Ying has always been drawn to women who are not afraid to express their true personalities. Chic Chica is a dynamic collection designed for the elegant, sexy, and edgy woman to mix and match while exploring her own style.

VEILE | Julia has a distinctive style and view of fashion. She looks at fashion as revolutionary. For Julia, clothing should be a work of art in and of itself. By combining draping and flat patterning techniques, she shapes and molds textiles in order to create interesting silhouettes. These skills assist in highlighting her unique concepts. Although Julia finds inspiration from a wide variety of sources, she is most inspired by her desire to make women feel powerful in their own skin.

Veile was designed for women who have no apologies to give the world. It was made for women who know exactly who they are and aren’t afraid to show it. These women know what they want and they aren’t afraid to take it. Each piece has a strong story that is highlighted by the textiles used within. There is the smooth texture of leather, the soft drape of wool, the shimmer off of silk, and the illusion given by sheer. Veile is all about enhancing perception of a woman’s power through clothing. Each piece is striking in its individual details and has an edge, just like the woman who wears it. Although Julia wants to empower, she does not want people to be afraid of the women she dresses. They should be fascinated, the way we so often are by danger.

DANGEROUS BEAUTY | Bebe is a first-generation, Laotian-American, gender-nonconformist whose preferred pronouns are he, him, his. The past few years have allowed him to grow tremendously; mentally, emotionally, and physically. He developed an appreciation and respect for his identity, which he once rejected. He is a much happier person now that he understands himself and his identity better, thanks to the support received from family, friends, and even strangers. His new-found confidence has allowed him to take risks in both life and in design, as they are intertwined aspects of himself.

Bold, daring, and sensual, Bebe’s designs have always been on the risque side. His garments are designed for confident people who enjoy dressing for attention. His collection, Dangerous Beauty, is based on the Femme Fatale, whose alluring beauty is equal to her level of danger. She is intelligent, cunning, and captivating; traits she uses to manipulate others to get what she wants. Taking feminine silhouettes and combining them with tailored elements, this collection is a fantasy wardrobe of dramatic flair and chic details.

JAUNTY | Alyssa’s dream of becoming a fashion designer started when she first discovered Vogue. Enchanted by the clothing editorials and the art, she was inspired to pursue a career in the fashion industry. As a designer, she aims to create women’s ready-to-wear clothing that make the wearer feel empowered. She focuses on creating looks that are sexy, strong, and confident. Alyssa is inspired by the structure of men’s clothes and adds feminine elements through fit, print and textural elements. Alyssa loves fashion illustration and ideation. Her goal is to become a trend forecaster.

Jaunty is inspired by the juxtaposition of the strong structure and classic look of men’s suiting from the 1920’s paired with beautiful lingerie. Women who represent Jaunty express themselves in a lively, cheerful, and self-confident manner. Fashion is all about having fun and expressing your personal style. This collection is created for women who aren’t afraid to be daring. A woman should not only feel confident, she should also feel powerful in these clothes.

NOT ABOUT ANGELS | Quinessa believes in using art as a liberating act. She is pursuing a Social Justice minor, and hopes to explore socially-conscious design by continuing her studies of social justice in graduate school. This pushes her to design garments that send a message or draw attention to various social issues. Quinessa’s top strength is communication, and both dancing and apparel design are ways to communicate with the body, which is why she chose these mediums to tell the story of this particular social issue.

Not About Angels is a commentary on racial violence and the trauma it inflicts on black youth. The dance follows a young girl watching the news, where she sees all of these people dying, people that look like her. In her dreams she is dancing with angels, who are these victims. In the end we see that the little girl never wakes from this dream, as she has become an angel herself.

UNTITLED | Through his four years in the United States, Charlie has learned a lot about race, religion, gender, sexuality, and mental health. He wants to present his growth through this final collection of his college career. On his journey to overcoming self-esteem issues and internalized racism, xenophobia, sexism, and homophobia, Charlie wants this collection to be an inclusive statement, made available to all kinds of identities in this society.

Inspired by nature’s colors, from deserts, plateaus, the ocean, and lavender fields, Charlie is designing with bright solid colors for the first time in his life. Looking at the beautiful colors and patterns of nature, he took a break from the busy world, from all the conflicts and competitions; and realized that colors can be a peaceful escape.

UNDERGROUND | Kelsey Lee is a Minnesota-based clothing designer with a focus on menswear. Her love of fashion started as a child through watching fashion shows and learning to sew and knit with her mom. Her dad always ensured that music was a big part of her life, which became a large inspiration of her aesthetic. Her menswear muses include The Beatles, David Bowie, and the more modern K-Pop boy groups, all fashion trendsetters of their time.

Kelsey is a strong proponent of the slow fashion movement and loves to add handmade elements to her designs. She finds value in the handcrafted, as opposed to the mass-produced, because the designer becomes a part of the object they are making, creating an emotional meaning beyond material.

Underground is a collection inspired by the motifs of consumerism and wastefulness carried throughout the Jim Henson movie Labyrinth. The main inspiration comes from a character who lives in a dump and literally wears all of her belongings on her back, most of which is just meaningless junk. These objects weigh her down, forcing her to live with the paranoia of losing them. Many of the textiles used in the collection were hand made using fabric scraps that Kelsey has collected over the years, things that most would consider garbage.

She hopes to bring new life to these forgotten objects through this eclectic line using spinning, quilting, braiding, knitting, and latch hooking techniques, bringing refinement to the concept of wearing “garbage”.

HOLLY’S COLLECTION | From a young age, Holly surrounded herself with various forms of art. Between taking local art classes, and creating through mixed media, Holly loved to express her creativity. Holly loves fashion and being able to show her style through her designs and make them come to life in a garment. Holly hopes to continue exploring materials to bring fun and innovative clothing to the future of fashion design.

Art has influenced and shaped who Holly is, and how she perceives the world. This collection pays homages to how drawing and painting have influenced Holly as a person and as a designer. Playing with texture and opaqueness and with an eye for color, Holly enjoys mixing and matching elements to tell a story through textiles.

BANANAS AND CREAM | Julie Anderson is a designer who strongly admires and pursues artistic approaches to design. As both a multimedia artist and designer, Julie focuses on the line between the two fields and blurs them together. A lover of color, nature, and all things out of the ordinary, Julie bends the practicality of what’s initially seen by the eye and brings it to an interpretive surface. In doing so, Julie hopes that her inspirations for anything that’s controversially beautiful, translated into art and designs, may provoke others to create as well.

Bananas and Cream displays a high fashion interpretation of beetles and similar bugs that exude intricate structures, colors, and patterns that are not traditionally viewed as beautiful. The concept for the line drew through the many travels and experiences that have opened Julie’s eyes to all unordinary beauties. Exhibited in shaped textiles which interpret shells, wings, and bodies of different insects; this collection is built for women with bold personalities who are looking to be seen in a different light to the world.

SURVIVAL | Caitlin Hartman has always been passionate about design and the environment.

Through her time in the apparel design program, Caitlin has evolved her understanding of fashion to include sustainability. While interning for a non-profit in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, she became interested in ethically made products. This experience inspired her to pursue a Sustainable Studies minor. Last fall, Caitlin studied at the Accademia Italiana in Florence, where she was inspired by her studies in art as a way to communicate.

This past summer, while interning in NYC, Caitlin began studying the relationship between our industrialized society and how it interacts with nature. Her collection, Survival, is inspired by the complexity of this relationship, illustrating through fashion how these opposing areas both compete and harmonize with one another. The goal of her line is to express the issues we see today with the struggle to find peace between development and the environment. In order to illustrate this complex relationship, the collection is composed of synthetic materials like vinyl, neoprene, and mesh in combination with livings plants. Her line begins with nature being very kept and in control, with function and structure as the main focus.
