SPARK | As a designer and a r unner, Sar ah has always been interested in how innova-

tive and fashionable apparel can have a profound impact on an athlete’s perfor mance.

She’s a member of the Univer sity’s tr ack and cross countr y teams, and is hugely influenced by the her teammates--the dream-chasing, goal-cr ushing visionaries who inter act with the wor ld through athletics. Athletes like these are the “who” in inspiring her creations and whom she ultimately hopes will benefit from her designs. Sar ah also takes inspir ation from the human body—the movement, action, and functionality that allows athletes to pur sue doing what they love. Her inter nships at WSI Spor ts and Target, along with her wor k in retail at TC Running Company have refined her design skills and solidified her desire to continue her education in designing perfor mance apparel and spor t products.

The inspir ation for Spar k comes from the metaphor of fire and the duality that lies within it—seemingly opposite, yet both sides equally per tinent to spor t. The fir st aspect looks at fire as fuel, something that bur ns and power s goals and long-ter m visions for oneself. It is this passion that empower s athletes to per severe through obstacles and allows them to push past perceived limitations. The other side of the metaphor lies in the usage of flames or spar ks as an image for inspir ation, for spontaneity, for bliss, or for joy. This feeling lies in the r unner’s love of their spor t for the sake of the spor t— for what it is and not from what they get back from it.

WILD | Tr aveling the globe, meeting people from other cultures, and experiencing new

ways of life are what inspires Mikaela. In high school, a family friend and FIT alum aided Mikaela in developing apparel design technical skills. Later, wor king as an apprentice to a designer in Pr ague, Czech Republic, she fell in love with the design process.

Mikaela studied abroad in London and spent last summer in Vietnam for an inter nship with House of Gina Marie. These tr avels spar ked Mikaela’s passion for environmentally sustainable and socially conscious design. She hopes to design clothing in which women feel empowered to explore beyond the familiar and into the wor ld.

The inspir ation for Wild is rooted in Mikaela’s love for tr avel and the connection to the people and places she has been. It’s designed for the strong-willed female tr aveler s that have always sur rounded her. It’s a line for women to explore new ter ritories in comfor table and photo ready clothing. All of the fabrics used in the collection are made from natur al fiber s. The brightly colored and patter ned fabrics are sourced from a small village near Bhuj, India. They are created from 100% cotton and dyed with organic materials, giving a boldness and richness to the hues.

MELISSA (FEIDT) JERECZEK

to-wear, resor t and evening wear. Five year s ago, a job at a local custom performance-wear company became the catalyst for her star t in the fashion industr y. As the inter mediar y between customer and designer, she got to experience the design process fir st-hand and was inspired to retur n to the Univer sity of Minnesota to study apparel design. Last summer, Melissa had the privilege to inter n with Tar a LaTour where she lear ned couture bridal techniques and fabric manipulation. Cur rently inter ning with Primp boutique, she is exploring the entrepreneurial side of fashion through their Henr y + Mar tin line. As a designer, Melissa enjoys a chic-feminine aesthetic that highlights and celebr ates a woman’s body. Her inspir ation is dr awn from her experiences in dance, tr avel and love. After gr aduation, Melissa plans to pur sue a position that combines the creative design and buying avenues of apparel.

Oasis is a resor t wear collection for a woman in need of escape. A trip to Sedona, Arizona set into motion a line combining organic silhouettes and geometric contour s.

Inspired by the color s of red rock mountains, the flowing striations of Antelope Canyon and the textures found in the arid deser t, Oasis is a culmination of luxur y and free spirit. Copper and iron paints were carefully patinated onto lush silks for a refreshing twist on texture. Lofty chiffons, rich silk crepe and geometric lace blend together to create a reprieve from ever yday life - your ver y own Oasis .

LOU is a Spring/Summer line that blends inspir ation from Sophia’s tr avels to New Yor k City and London. It reflects the confident edge women in both places embody as they walk through the city streets. Designed to be combined with classic staples in one’s closet, Lou inspires innovative styling choices created by the wearer. In many of the gar ments, the thoughtfully chosen fabrics are able to stand on their own while being enhanced by Sophia’s designs and bold color choices. LOU is Sophia’s fir st complete collection.

JO | Wor king in design has always been the ultimate goal for Abby. She began her

love of ar t in high school while taking individualized fashion-focused ar t classes. She now brings her illustr ations to life through sewing. While studying Apparel Design and Retail Merchandising, she had the oppor tunity to study abroad at the London College of Fashion. The city’s street fashion and high end couture seen in her tr avels heavily influenced her style. Abby aspires to have her own clothing br and someday.

Jo is inspired by Abby’s tr avels, life experiences, love of music, cur rent style, and the strong women in her life. Made to make women feel beautiful and powerful, the line uses movement, texture, and tr ansparency to create unique layered pieces that are both light and feminine..

YU | Sydney Moustakis has always been inspired by the endless possibilities in apparel

design and the ability to create the things that she imagined. Her schooling has invoked a passion for tailored womens-wear with an edgy flare. Sydney spent a semester studying at the London College of Fashion and a summer inter ning for House of Gina Marie where she wor ked in Vietnam. During her time in Vietnam she lear ned about the production process and the ar t of building valuable relationships. Through her education she has gained an appreciation for the buying process and a love for creative design. She hopes to wor k in one of these fields after gr aduation.

Life is full of moments that make us laugh, make us cr y, or make us incredibly happy; regardless of which it is, all make us grow. The small things seem to matter less and we discover who we want to be. YU aims to celebr ate the confidence this process brings us.

Fashion gives people a voice. Having the ability to por tr ay who you are through what you wear is a special thing and YU gives an individual voice to women who are bold, not afr aid to be themselves and have the drive to achieve big goals.

AT NIGHT | Dr awing, painting, and fashion illustr ation have been Madelyn’s passions

since childhood. After growing up in a small Wisconsin city where many dressed the same, she was enticed by fashion’s power for self-expression. Her creative interests led her to study fashion design at the Univer sity of Minnesota where she has fallen in love with the creative design process and has continued to develop her fashion illustr ation skills. Madelyn strives to create gar ments that reflect the beauty she finds in the wor ld around her. She plans to pur sue a career designing women’s wear after gr aduation.

At Night contains sleek designs in smoldering hues that reflect the fier y, cloud streaked sky after an evening stor m. Using bold style lines and silhouettes that accentuate the body, Madelyn invites the young women she designs for to stand out and live life with passion.

BLOOMSBURY | Though she hails from the Midwest, Marina Qualey’s hear t it is in

London. Inspired by the sophisticate, she aims to reinvent classics and create polished, timeless collections of cor por ate-casual wear for the moder n young professional. With strong creative focus and constr uction skills, Marina’s designs are best described as soft and str uctur al. Marina’s aesthetic is simple-chic, effer vescent with elegance, and yacht-ical. She harbor s feelings of pleasure from a tailor-made specialty cr aft and the pur poseful, under stated design elements that they’re anchored on. Marina studied and inter ned in London and dr aws inspir ation from the sophisticated European women she encountered. She also was a design and mar keting inter n for Gina Moorhead, lear ning small business, design, and networ king on an inter national level through tr avels to Vietnam.

The Bloomsbur y collection, created for Fall of 2017, was inspired by the metropolitan lifestyle of the chic, confident Londoner. The concept for the line drew greatly from the color stor y of the European cityscape and the details in the architecture. The collection utilizes textured wool suiting, cotton shir ting, and distinctive pinstripes for a cor por ate casual look that is eye-catching and dur able. Relaxed silhouettes, soft dr aping, and subtle details make this line perfect for the stylish woman in tr ansit, either on her way to wor k or across the wor ld.

We’re All Mad Here was inspired by Kina’s love of Alice in Wonder land as well as themes dr awn from fair y tales. Kina designed the collection based on Alice in Wonder land’s color s, char acter por tr ayals, and abstr act shapes. The collection is designed to be wor n off the r unway to gr and events like galas, award shows, and other red car pet events.

is the driving force that pushes society fur ther. The same could be said of Aaronn’s aesthetic. The ebbs and flows of militar y, mar riage, fatherhood, and loss have shaped Aaronn’s designs as he evolves in new directions. He designs high-end streetwear with a focus on menswear, but blur s the line between masculine and feminine societal nor ms.

An Ode To Saoir se is inspired by a stor y Aaronn wrote about a man who risks ever ything for something he loves and pays a higher price than he anticipated. The stor y and the line pay homage to Irish folklore, militar y life, and dealing with loss. From beginning to end the line represents a tr ansition from playful naivety to a dar k encumbr ance and results in open vulner ability.

MISFITS, TROUBLEMAKERS, AND RENEGADES | Sinéad is recognized by her peer s for her appreciation of bold prints, unabashed love of color, and the over the top style she utilizes in her designs and day-to-day lifestyle. Raised in a household fueled by adventure and nourished by ar t, Sinéad always dressed to the nines and decided to pur sue her love of fashion through the study of apparel design. Ar med with scissor s and thread, she seeks to create size inclusive looks for playful and daring people with vivacious attitudes and under lying confidence. Ultimately, she aims to create clothing that will spar k joy in the wearer ; an unfaltering aspir ation that has held tr ue since she fir st cut up Barbie’s ball gown.

Misfits, Troublemaker s, and Renegades is inspired by the moder n gir l gang movement trending in pop culture. Sinéad stays tr ue to her rebellious outlook while stepping out of her comfor t zone to explore new techniques. She strives to constr uct str uctured and detailed gar ments that strike pride in the wearer and encour ages them to embr ace their power, as well as their sexuality. The feminine details and light color palette seek to contr ast, yet compliment the provocative edge and ser ve as a reminder that one’s softer side doesn’t compromise one’s strength.

ZHE | Kyrie is passionate about approaching design with intention. Her focus is on

technical design with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Kyrie’s other skills include patter n making, gar ment constr uction, and fit assessment. Caring deeply about the stories that come along with a gar ment, she is creative in her approach to sustainable fashion. She gets excited about creating affordable, beautiful clothes for ever yday people that are based on principles they can suppor t and feel good about. Reusing and recycling fabrics and findings is one of her favorite ways to implement sustainability in her designs.

Zhe is a clothing line made of reused materials. Designed for genderfluid, androgynous, agender, or otherwise non-binar y identifying per sons, Zhe is based on the concept of blur ring the lines between tr aditional feminine and masculine styles. Non-gender and genderfluid per sons deser ve the chance to express their gender and per sonalities however they feel comfor table. Clothing gives us all the oppor tunity to show the wor ld the best ver sion of our selves, and that should not be dependent upon our gender.

malistic designs. The inter section of the r ur al natur al environment of their youth and the urban city life as an adult inspires Megan’s designs for a r apidly evolving wor ld. As an inter n with Iris Color Studio Megan assisted in custom textile dyeing projects for the National Galler y of Ar t, the Cleveland Museum of Ar t, Tar a LaTour, and the Minnesota Oper a. Megan has also recently attended and presented a self-adjusting closure design at the Inter national Symposium on Wear able computer s in Heidelberg, Ger many with the Univer sity of Minnesota’s Wear able Technology Lab. Megan’s future goals include fur ther explor ation and schooling in technical and functional design with interests in wor king with protective clothing and fitting the human for m.

Aves is a line that combines luxurious wools and crisp cottons tailored for young professionals. The clean, polished looks are inspired by the sleek, powerful silhouettes of birds of prey and the bold, captivating color ation of songbirds. Custom hand dyed shir t panels, neutr al wools, and subtle details combine classic tailoring techniques with a moder n cut. This fall line is designed for the stylish urban commuter looking to make a statement both in and out of the office.

INNIT | Willis Batz-K amby is a Minneapolis Southsider whose passion for apparel de-

sign began in the late nineties with a backwards cap and a pair of Reebok sneaker s. His costume bin, the cr adle of his mismatched per sonal style, outlasted the nineties and now ser ves as a major inspir ation for his bold and vibr ant collections. A lover of prints and patter ns, Willis uses recognizable silhouettes and relatable images that invoke a sense of nostalgia and playfulness among his target mar ket. Willis tr anslates his charismatic and humorous approach to apparel design into fun and youthful collections. Along with his knowledge of pop culture and the streetwear industr y, his tr avels through Europe and his Color ado roots act as a catalyst for his collections in an attempt to design comfor table and stylish clothes for the adventurous souls of the millennial gener ation.

Innit is Willis’ love letter to his ten year old self, inspired by the vibr ancy and magnetic lure of his favorite city in the wor ld; London, England. Constant exposure to maps, tr ansit poster s, classic football shir ts, and late night pints helped to create this line of retro spor t based streetwear. Anchored in knit tops, denim bottoms, and printed outerwear, this collection of mismatched menswear is built for young city dweller s and misplaced mar auder s who aren’t ready to grow up just yet.

ETHEREAL | Gathering most of her inspir ation from video games and television, Sar ah specializes in cosplay (costume play) gar ments that emulate fictional char acter s. She designed and sold costume accessories for near ly 10 year s before tr ansitioning her reach to a more alter native mar ket. She is driven by her interest in Japanese street fashion, strega and alien goth styles, as well as a plethor a of other unique genres r anging from fair y kei to ghost aesthetic. Wor king with difficult and original fabrics to see how far she can bend the laws of fashion is one of her strengths. Sar ah’s audience can look forward to seeing a blend of Japanese influences molded with ar tistic ver ve represented in her gar ments.

Ethereal focuses on unique fabrics and high class cosplay. Each dress is its own original red car pet look for costume enthusiasts and celebrities alike. Much of the collection dr aws inspir ation from famous cosplay designer s like Yaya Han, Lisa Lou Who, K amuiCosplay, and Jessica Nigri. Colour and spar kle are an impor tant theme in this 5-piece line, where costumer y is incor por ated into elegant gowns that allow the wearer to embody their fantasy, if only for a night.
