The School of Music is a comprehensive music school that includes performance, scholarship, music education, and music therapy. We are a supportive and vibrant learning environment that empowers modern musicians.

The Sound of U • Our world-class faculty includes members of the Minnesota Orchestra and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and artists with extensive recording and commercial experience, including Hollywood films. • Our state-of-the-art facility includes an 1,100 seat concert hall, a 160 seat recital hall, electronic music studios, instrument collections, and a music library with more than 33,000 print books, 55,000 print scores, 50,000 audio and video recordings, 47,000 cds and 2,400 dvds. • Our innovative curriculum includes orchestras, bands, choirs, and improvised ensembles; jazz and popular music theory; global musical traditions; and chamber music. • We are immersed in a rich artistic community that includes two major orchestras, an opera company, an internationally renowned contemporary art center (with a new music series), as well as venues hosting pop, jazz, and world music.


degree options The School of Music offers undergraduate programs in the following areas:

BACHELOR OF MUSIC (BMUS) The bachelor of music (BMus) degrees are four-year programs of intensive study designed to prepare students for professional lives in music. BMus degrees are offered in the following areas, all of which require formal admission to the School of Music: Music Performance Music Education Music Therapy

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC (BA) The BA in music provides a solid foundation in musical principles while allowing room for exploration through elective coursework. These programs are excellent choices for students looking to double major in areas outside of music. Guided by faculty advisors, our BA majors bring an astonishingly diverse range of interests and perspectives to our vibrant student community. Applied Emphasis* Academic Emphasis *Admission to the applied emphasis program involves an application and audition, while there is no audition requirement for students interesting in pursuing the academic emphasis.

MINORS IN MUSIC Students pursuing a major outside of music are invited to add a music minor to their studies. The School of Music offers three minors: an applied music minor that requires an entrance audition and includes one-onone lessons on a primary instrument, an ensemble-based music minor that requires no audition (select ensembles require auditions for participation), and a world music minor that requires no audition and focuses on ensembles and music from all cultures. LICENSURE AND EQUIVALENCY PROGRAMS The School of Music offers the Music Education Post-Bac Licensure Certificate program and the Music Therapy Equivalency program for those students who have already completed a music degree with another emphasis but are now interested in entering into one of these two fields of study.

ensembles Each year, thousands of University of Minnesota students participate in School of Music bands, orchestras, choirs, and world music groups, performing everything from western classical literature to contemporary music, including newlycommissioned pieces, gospel, and international music. From our auditioned ensembles to the inclusive non-auditioned campus ensembles, these opportunities are open to all university students.

apply STEP 1: APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA Incoming Freshman and Transfer applicants must apply for admission to the University of Minnesota. (You don't need to wait for the result of your University application to apply to the School of Music.)

APPLY TO THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC For admissions consideration, complete your application at umnmusic.slideroom.com. Fall 2024 applicants to the following programs will also be automatically considered for music scholarships: Bachelor of Music (Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy) and Bachelor of Arts with Applied Emphasis. Your application will need to include: Applicant information Includes proposed degree plan, audition/ interview date, studio instructor preferences, musical and educational history, personal statements, and space to list musical accomplishments and goals. Two letters of recommendation (suggested) $50 Non-refundable application fee If the music application fee proves to be a barrier to submitting your application, please contact music@umn.edu to request an application fee waiver.
