NEUROLOGY EXPERTS FOCUSED ON YOU
Accomplishments 2019-2020
10 Key Accomplishments For the University of Miami Department of Neurology, our goal is to be a leader in neurological care, discovery and teaching. We have had many accomplishments over the last year that have allowed us to get closer to that goal and transform lives for many of those suffering with Stroke, Headaches, ALS, Parkinson’s, MS, Alzheimer’s and Memory Disorders, Epilepsy, Brain Tumor and other neurological disorders.
We want to share some of them with you:
Superior Clinical Care 1. The Department has expanded to include 85 clinical and research
2.
faculty in 14 divisions. Physicians offered advanced medical care closer to home conducting 41,759 patient visits at more than 10 clinical and 6 hospital locations in South Florida, extending the power of academic medicine into our communities. We also expanded our multi disciplinary care model to encompass not only ALS, but also Charcot Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease and other neurogenetic disorders, as well as Epilepsy, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Brain Tumor and Multiple Sclerosis. Physicians lead and serve at many centers of excellence including:
• Part of the NIA 1 FL Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center • A Joint Commission Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Primary Stroke Center at UHealth Tower and Jackson South; • Awarded AHA GoldPlus and Target Stroke Awards for JMH • A Level 4 Epilepsy Center recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers; • A designated Parkinson’s Disease Center of Excellence by Parkinson Foundation; • An ALS Center of Excellence recognized by the ALS Association • An MS Center of Excellence designated by the National MS Society; • A Muscular Dystrophy Association designated National Car Center; • A FL DOH Level 1 Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital
Superior Research 3.
The Department is ranked #18 in NIH funding; had 206 active awards; had $19.8M in total research funding, which represents 43% of total departmental revenue. 10% of the faculty ranked in the top 50% of research scientists and more than 50% of faculty have research funding. The Department has maintained more than $15M in research funding, per year, for the last 5 years. Faculty published 324 peer reviewed publications.

Continues to lead collaborative research initiatives such as:
• The Brain Endowment Bank (a NIH NeuroBioBank); • The NINDS StrokeNet and NeuroNEXT clinical trial networks • Growth of the NINDS/NCATS Create Consortium (Clinical Research in ALS and related disorders for Therapy Development) which focused on therapy development for ALS and related disorders; • The Florida Stroke Registry funded by the Florida Department of Health; and • The McKnight Brain Institute exploring age-related cognitive decline, 1 of 4 in the nation
5.
Continued stem cell treatment research in patients with Alzheimer’s disease as well as research in biomarkers to more easily diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. We also participated in a stem cell delivery trial for patients who had an ischemic stroke.
Superior Research (continued) 6.
7.
Lead International scientists and collaborators in studying the pre- symptomatic phase of ALS; identifying the first biochemical biomarker of pre-symptomatic disease and beginning the development of the first ever ALS prevention trial. Also started an industry partnership to bring groundbreaking clinical trials to patients with ALS and myasthenia, including gene therapy studies for patients with genetic forms of ALS. Was among the top enrolling sites in the game-changing industry funded DAWN trial whose outcomes were published in New England Journal of Medicine and discovered that patients with acute stroke, who had been last known to be well 6 to 24 hours earlier, had better outcomes for disability at 90 days from mechanical thrombectomy than those receiving medical management alone.
Superior Community Service and Education 8.
Chairman, Dr. Ralph Sacco, M.D., M.S. served as President of the American Academy of Neurology 2017 – 2019 and was elected to the National Academy of Medicine.
