THE NATURE OF THINGS: WORKS by BARBARA FONTAINE-WHITE & HERSHALL SEALS

September 6-21 | 9 AM-4 PM

BAUGH CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTS | ART GALLERY

RECEPTION Thursday, September 7 | 5 PM

The Nature of Things is an exhibition featuring works by artists Barbara Fontaine-White and Hershall Seals. Two diverse bodies of work that push the boundaries of the expected and challenge nuanced engagements with the natural world. Their use of materiality to explore concepts disrupts the act of seeing the objects as their materials or as the things they resemble, and offers new ways of thinking about the relationship between people, art, and nature.

BAUGH PERFORMANCE HALL

Husband-wife duo Samantha and Ruben Balboa are joined by pianist Michelle Schumann in this concert featuring works for soprano, viola, and piano. This anticipated event will present colorful, enigmatic, and gripping works by traditional and unexpected composers.

TIME AND PROGRESS

A show of over 100 letterpress posters by Louisville, KY based designer and printer Brad Vetter. These concert posters—commissioned by musicians like Chris Stapleton, Death Cab for Cutie, and Noah Kahan—span Brad’s 10+ years as an independent artist and designer. Brad creates relevant and contemporary poster work while still using the centuries-old letterpress printing process. This is a refreshing look at contemporary work that recalls the context of old wheat-pasted letterpress advertising one would have seen on a street corner or posted on the side of buildings at the turn of the century.

BITS AND PIECES

Artist and educator Lauren Yandell will showcase two bodies of work that she creates simultaneously. The series of mixed media drawings focus on representing her concerns and experiences getting through daily life, using repetitive motifs to create visual representations for those ideas. They are tedious and take a while to complete. Her collages explore natural elements and environments and allow her to experiment with color, texture and composition. The improvisational aspect of the collages is a nice counterbalance to the methodical practice of the drawing series but working between the two series is a unique conversation in how one informs the other.
