Student Internships, Research Experience, Professional Development, & Other Opportunities

SPRING 2026
02/06/2026

Alleyah Britton (at right) is an undergraduate in the Department of Natural Sciences earning her B.S. in Environmental Science and serves as president of the Environmental Science Association - UMES Chapter.
“This summer (2025), I had the privilege of completing a 10-week internship at IMET - Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. I was honored to work in the UMCES Li Lab, focusing on microalgal biotechnology, under the guidance of Dr. Yi-Ying Lee. My project involved conducting Adaptive Laboratory Evolution (ALE) experiments to enhance high CO₂ tolerance in the marine alga Nannochloropsis oceanica.
This experience gave me valuable hands-on experience in experimental design and microalgal biotechnology. More importantly, it deepened my passion for environmental research and reinforced my commitment to addressing climate-related challenges through science.

Chelsea Wright (first student from the left) is an undergraduate in the Department of Human Ecology earning her B.S. in Fashion Merchandise and Design, and served a co-presenter and panelist before an audience of high school students, college peers, and faculty at the Maryland Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (MAFCS) Fall Professional Meeting held on November 14, 2025 at Morgan State University.
In the "My Life as a College Student" panel discussion, Chelsea along with fellow Human Ecology students Samaiah Davis, Aalayia Otis, and Ashley Williams shared personal insights into the college experience, offering valuable advice to high school students about the transition to higher education. Chelsea and her cohorts shared tips about time management, major selection, and professional dress and etiquette to help their audience navigate the challenges of college life and the modern workplace.
