WELCOME NEW HAWKS!
Meet Dr. Anderson Heidi M. Anderson, a native of Gary, Indiana, assumed the presidency of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on September 1, 2018. She is the 16th leader of the 1890 land-grant institution in Princess Anne that opened its doors on Sept. 13, 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy initially under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. A three-time graduate of Purdue University in her native Indiana, Dr. Anderson came to UMES with nearly two decades of higher education leadership experience. “What I personally value about access, quality and opportunity – the tools that close the achievement gap – are at the core of my leadership,” she said.
Heidi M. Anderson, Ph. D. President of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore
She was previously chief academic policymaker at Texas A&M University-Kingsville from 2015 to 2017, where she managed a $35 million budget and directed 22 academic departments, 10 centers and institutes. She oversaw creation of new degrees in computer science, engineering and clinical mental health counseling. Prior to working in Texas, Dr. Anderson was chief academic policymaker at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia from 2013 to 2015. Between 2006 and 2013, she held various positions at the University of Kentucky, including professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, assistant dean for educational innovation, associate provost for faculty affairs, and vice president/associate provost for institutional effectiveness. Her classroom experience includes working as a professor and chair of Auburn University’s Pharmacy Care System Department and serving as an assistant professor in the University of Tennessee’s College of Pharmacy. She has served as President and vice president of the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Dr. Anderson earned her Ph.D. in pharmacy administration, a Master’s in education, and a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Purdue, also a land-grant university.

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE
Historic Highlights The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was originally established as the Delaware Conference Academy in 1886. Later, the Academy was supervised by Morgan State College under the name Princess Anne Academy or the Industrial Branch of Morgan State College. Subsequently, the Maryland Agricultural College, wishing to provide instruction for Negro youth under the provisions of the Second Morrill Act of 1890 and later acts of Congress, contracted with the trustees of Morgan College, the owners of the Academy, to provide the requisite instruction for Negro youth. By the Act of the Legislature of Maryland, one-fifth of the Morrill Fund and a small state appropriation were granted to the Academy. For the first 25 years, it was difficult, indeed impossible, to secure enough students beyond the high school grade to warrant advanced classes. With the improvement in public education and the establishment of high schools for Negroes, more educated students were recruited. In September 1925, the Junior College Department was established. The State of Maryland, in operating its 1862 landgrant program at the Maryland Agricultural College at College Park, which did not admit African-Americans, sought to provide a land-grant program for AfricanAmericans and assumed control of the Princess Anne Academy, renaming it the Eastern Branch of the Maryland Agricultural College. Control shifted from Morgan State College to Maryland Agricultural College over a period of years between 1919 and 1936. In January 1936, the College passed into complete control and ownership of the State, and the University of Maryland was designated as the administrative agency. Also in 1936, definite plans were laid for raising the status to a four-year college and the beginning of increased offerings at Princess Anne College. Four-year courses were established in Agriculture and Agricultural Education, Home Economics and Home Economics Education, and Mechanic Arts and Mechanic Arts Education; a two-year junior college course in Arts and Sciences was also established. 3
In 1948, the institution became officially Maryland State College, a division of the University of Maryland. However, resources and funding from the state remained limited, and the school did not grow much in size. In 1970, the University System of Maryland was organized, and on July 1, 1970, Maryland State College became the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Since 1970, UMES has grown to incorporate a wider vision of its mission. Recognized as one of the 13 University System of Maryland (USM) campuses, it is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
UMES TODAY UMES provides affordable access to higher education while developing innovative technology and research in key fields like agriculture, science, pharmacy, and engineering. CARS ON CAMPUS
On-Campus Parking Digital permits are available for purchase online via the parking portal and at the Student Services Center (SSC), Room 2150 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. We accept cash, check, money order, credit card, and Hawk Card. The annual permit cost is $60 for all students, faculty, and staff. Students may only register one vehicle for their permit. Permit sharing is not allowed and will result in a citation and fine. Vehicles must have a valid permit yearly from July 1 through June 30. UMES honors valid Salisbury University parking permits. Plates Out Parking will be “Plates Out.” When parking on campus, drivers must park with their license plate facing the driving lane so that it can be properly scanned. What that means to the campus: if you have a vehicle with one license plate, the back of the vehicle will need to face the parking lane – no backing in or pulling through. This will allow for greater efficiency in enforcement and avoid a no- plates out citation and fine.

Hawk Pack FAQs What is the Hawk Pack Program?
The program helps reduce the cost of materials, ensuring students conveniently receive all their required course materials before the first day of class.
How much does Hawk Pack cost?
The Program cost of $22 will be a per credit hour charge for courses you are enrolled in each semester. The cost is billed through your University of Maryland Eastern Shore student account and requires no direct out-of-pocket expenses for students.
What materials are included?
The Hawk Pack program covers all required course materials and will be provided to students in either a print or digital format based on faculty selection. Print materials can be reserved online through the Hawk Pack portal and either shipped direct to students or held at the UMES Bookstore for in-store pickup.
How do I reserve materials?
You will receive an email approximately one month prior to classes starting each semester with a link to access the Hawk Pack portal. There is also a link available on the UMES Bookstore website. Once you access the portal, you will be presented with the materials that are required for your classes, if they are print or digital materials, as well as any recommended supplies for the course. How do I purchase my course materials if I decide to opt-out of the Hawk Pack program?
While it is NOT recommended, students have the option to opt-out of this program by completing the opt-out form. Opting out means you will not receive access to your required course materials in a convenient package at a discounted rate. If you opt-out of the program you are responsible for purchasing all of your required course materials at the bookstore.

Only charges billed by UMES may be budgeted (off-campus expenses, etc., cannot be included) The University reserves the right to re-budget accounts as additional charges are incurred. (e.g., charges are added for meals, housing, etc., which were not originally budgeted.) Withdrawal from the University does not constitute withdrawal from the payment plan. Be advised the student is still responsible for any tuition and fees remaining on the account. To view Payment Plans: Visit -

If you register for a course, charges are incurred, and you must meet payment deadlines. If payment is not received in full or if you are not enrolled in a payment plan by the payment due date, your courses will be dropped. An overdue balance may prevent access to services, such as future enrollment and diplomas. Unpaid accounts are subject to collection procedures and will be sent to the State Central Collection Unit; a 17% collection fee will be added to the unpaid amount. State Central Collection Unit 1-888-248-0345 If you are no longer interested in taking a course or attending the University, you must officially drop the course(s) or withdraw from the Universtiy. Drops and withdrawals are prorated based on the adjustment calendar. All billing information (E-Bill) will be sent to your UMES email account. Keep your contact information updated to receive all communications regarding billing. You are responsible for all debts incurred, regardless of whether or not an e-bill is received or payment is to be made by a third party.
