FALL INDUCTION

THE PURPOSES OF THE OMICRON DELTA KAPPA SOCIETY

1. To recognize those who have attained a high standard of efficiency in five areas of collegiate activities (Scholarship; Athletics; Campus or Community Service, Social and Religious Activities, and Campus Government; Journalism, Speech, and the Mass Media; the Creative and Performing Arts) and to inspire others to strive for conspicuous attainment along similar lines.

2. To bring together the most representative students in all phases of collegiate life and thus to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate interest.

3. To bring together members of the faculty and student body of the institution on a basis of mutual interest and understanding.

REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT SELECTION INTO OMICRON DELTA KAPPA

1. Junior, Senior, or Graduate Student standing.

2. Rank in upper thirty-five percent of respective class.

3. Receive a minimum number of activity points.

4. Distinguish themself in one of the five areas of leadership.

5. Be of unquestioned good character.

6. Receive a positive membership vote of seventy-five percent of the active circle present and voting.

REQUIREMENTS FOR FACULTY, STAFF, ALUMNI, AND HONORARY MEMBERSHIP

Individuals who have achieved distinction in their own field of expertise, or who have rendered remarkable and significant service to causes may be elected into Faculty, Staff, Alumni, or Honorary membership in Omicron Delta Kappa. Qualifications should include exemplary character, scholarship and intelligence, service and leadership in campus or community life, good citizenship, and fellowship and consecration to democratic ideals.

Dr. Jerry Lewis

Ms. Anika Darbari

Dr. Jerry L. Lewis leads the University of Maryland’s Academic Achievement Programs, overseeing the Summer Transitional Program, the Intensive Educational Development Program, and five federal TRIO programs. With more than 43 years of higher education experience, including over 40 years in TRIO, he is the founding author of UMD’s Talent Search, McNair, and Educational Opportunity Center programs.

Dr. Lewis has been a national leader in the TRIO movement, helping to establish MEAEOPP and the Council for Opportunity in Education. He has testified before Congress on behalf of TRIO and has secured more than $27 million in grant funding at UMD.

A celebrated educator and advocate, Dr. Lewis has earned numerous awards, including the Walter P. Mason Award, the Chancellor’s Minority Achievement Award, and the University of Maryland President’s Medal. He is also a Lifetime Member of MEAEOPP and a member of the Maryland Hall of Fame for his service to low-income and first-generation students.

Dr. Lewis holds degrees from Creighton University, the University of Maryland, and Howard University, and also maintains a civil law practice in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
