the most of the fall semester, impacting the greater Maryland community! While students have been hard at work in their first weeks back on campus, families in Texas, Florida, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico remain focused on recovery from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. In response, ODK is proud to be leading Terps4Terps! Terps4Terps is a charitable effort dedicated to raising funds to support those members of the Maryland community that have been affected by these recent natural disasters. With the campaign nearing its end, ODK is primed to deliver more than $5,000 in relief funds to support our fellow Terps! Furthermore, we recently celebrated the 90th Anniversary of the Sigma Circle! Marking the occasion with an incredible night by the fountain, alumni and current students joined to honor Dr. Drury Bagwell, former ODK Faculty Secretary, with the Inaugural Distinguished Service Award, an award now forever-named in his honor! Looking ahead, the Sigma Circle is proud to be engaging the broader student body and campus community! On October 21st, in partnership with the Student Government

Association and Maryland Discourse, ODK is hosting the first-ever campus-wide Leadership Summit! Continuing efforts from last year, ODK will also be hosting an alumni panel for current members and will be volunteering to support local high school students as part of a growing resume review program. Today, the University of Maryland is thriving! No doubt, the strength of our campus is due in large part to the fearless leaders that compose ODK. As we continue on this journey in our 91st year, the Sigma Circle is prosperous and only growing larger! In the weeks and months ahead, we look forward to welcoming new members and embracing our alumni family as they return to campus! Together, the members of Omicron Delta Kappa’s Sigma Circle - past, present, and future - continue to serve as a beacon of light on campus! Message from the Faculty Secretary appy Fall ODK! As I sit here writing this article, I am filled with tremendous gratitude for the amazing things accomplished by this exemplary organization. We started the fall with three monumental efforts. First, we celebrated the significant history of the Sigma Circle at a glorious 90th anniversary event under a tent on McKeldin Mall. We were joined by generations of Sigma Circle members to celebrate 90 years of ODK, the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the ODK Fountain, and the excitement of seeing the newly engraved names of the most recently inducted members of the Sigma Circle. Over 200 alumni joined President Wallace Loh, National Executive Director Tara

Construction Park from page 2 TERP Classrooms. These special facilities, designed to enable students to Teach, Engage, Respond, and Participate, come in four different styles, all created with special educational principles in mind. Gorgeous in its design, Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center even hosts a stunning sculpture, “The Elephant” by Karel Appel, from The Phillips Collection.

Singer, and current members to recognize our inaugural Drury Bagwell ODK Distinguished Service Award recipient, the incomparable Drury Bagwell, who received the inaugural award and had it named for him on the same night! It was a magnificent and memorable evening! For more on the ODK 90th Anniversary Celebration, go to page 4. Second, following the tragedies of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, ODK was asked by President Loh to lead the way in student fundraising. The students creatively developed the Terps4Terps campaign focused on raising funds for UMD students who were personally affected by the hurricanes. Through Venmo and Launch UMD, the ODKers challenged other student organizations and alums to help out their fellow Terps in need by donating to the Student Crisis Fund. Third, we had another banner selections process the same week as the other two efforts were underway.

Seven honorary, three graduate students, and 334 undergraduate leaders applied for membership and were thoroughly vetted by a mighty, multi-hour effort of current ODKers. The results were a diverse group of 63 inductees. The exciting semester continued with two ODK lectures in the beginning of October. On October 6 we hosted Ben & Jerry's Jerry Greenfield followed on October 12 by Rep. John Lewis who authored this year's First Year Book, March: Book 3. We look forward to another amazing Homecoming Student Leadership Celebration on Saturday, October 28 in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp beginning two hours before the kick-off of the Maryland Football game. Hope to see you there!

“I want the Iribe Center to feel like Silicon Valley just hit College Park.” That’s what co-founder and CEO of Oculus VR, Brendan Iribe, said about the massive upgrade to the computer science department at the University of Maryland. With a good deal of construction still required to finish the project, the Brendan Iribe Center is influenced in design by headquarters of Facebook, Google, Oculus VR, and other tech industry leaders. The facility will inspire Terps

with an interest and aptitude for technology to make the “next big thing” to change our lives for the better. There may have never been a more exciting time to be in College Park than now, with all of these great additions to the University of Maryland. In not too long, these shining, state-of-the-art facilities will be just as special a part of the memories of future Terps as the current cornerstones are to our beloved alumni.

TERPS HELPING TERPS By Matthew Swetz ’18 his semester, ODK Sigma Circle pioneered a University of Maryland campus wide effort to raise funds for the University’s Student Crisis Fund. In early September, Sigma Circle members were taken aback at the destruction of Hurricane Harvey and began working on possible initiatives that could help those in need. During this initial planning, Hurricane Irma began to form in the Atlantic and those involved quickly realized that this effort needed to be bigger and broader than initially imagined. After some deliberate planning with other student groups, and with the support of

T

University President Wallace Loh, the Sigma Circle executive board decided to raise money for the University’s Student Crisis Fund, a fund that offers support to students who face sudden, unanticipated financial hardship. The outcome of this initial planning is Terps4Terps, an ODK-lead, University-wide initiative aimed at raising money for fellow Terps who have been impacted by disaster. Terps4Terps is broad reaching. By establishing direct lines of communication with major stakeholders and groups on campus, ODK is enabling such groups to raise funds as a part of

the greater university. Terps4Terps is also agile. Donations to the Student Crisis Fund can be distributed to those in need within days of receiving a request. Additionally, Terps4Terps is unifying; By coming together as a campus to help those of us in need, ODK is fostering a sense of community. Terps4Terps collected donations on two different platforms Launch UMD, a university operated crowdfunding platform, and Venmo, a money transfer app. By providing access to emergency relief aid, ODK hopes to give help to Terps who need it most.

Adwoa considers being on the BSOS Dean’s Student advisory Council (DSAC) to be one of the most remarkable experiences of her time at Maryland. Her experience in BSOS allowed her to be an advocate for BSOS students and to build confidence in her leadership abilities. Her favorite ODK memory happened last year on Maryland Day. It was her first time watching the kids swim in the fountain and collect plastic turtles. Being a part of ODK gave her a chance to make Maryland Day a fun day for the children. In her free time, she loves reading African literature. “It helps me stay connected to my culture and learn more about history in different African countries.” She recommends everyone should read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi! After this project, she worked with high school students from Terp Young Scholars in their three-week course on environmentally conscious behaviors. Following that Innovation+Sustainability project, she helped lead a three-day design thinking workshop with Tribe, a group of five non-speaking autistic young adults at Growing Kids Therapy Center. This enriching experience taught her empathy and patience from a new perspective. The Center for Social Value Creation and Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship are two meaningful things that Sarina has been involved with on campus. Her experiences working with these special creative teams have inspired her to pursue her interest in education. Participating in Social Innovation Fellows and serving as Peer Innovation Coach has encouraged her to engage in the social impact space and reimagine education. Her favorite thing about being in ODK is meeting people who dedicate their time and energy to a variety of interests and organizations. “It is awesome getting to know these people better at different events on campus, like volunteering on Maryland Day!” In her free time, she enjoys dance fitness, reading books, and listening to music. She loves going to Daybreaker events and supporting the LiveItUp community as a Morale Officer.

He is most passionate about the work he does with the Student Government Association as the Director of Governmental Affairs. Advocating for students at all levels of government is something he views to be really important and is something that brings him joy every day. Khetarpal’s favorite thing about being involved in ODK is having the opportunity to interact with leaders from across different majors. Before ODK, he felt it was natural to only see what leaders in the fields of Government, Politics, and Business do. Since joining ODK, he has learned that leadership is not only unique to just one field, but also an attitude that can be found in successful leaders of any field. In his free time, Khetarpal likes to read, watch TV, spend time with friends, and drive -- he particularly views driving as a necessary activity for unwinding and relaxing.

LEADER Daniel Ogunlowo This summer, Ogunlowo was a Summer Analyst with J.P. Morgan, a financial services firm based in New York. This was his second summer with the firm, and he is pleased to return as a full time employee Daniel Ogunlowo, a next year. On senior Finance major campus, from Melville, New York Ogunlowo is a Resident Assistant (RA), which he finds to be his most meaningful and impactful involvement. Ogunlowo is happy to start his third year in this role this year because as an RA, he has been able to guide, mentor and work with freshman and sophomore students on several personal and academic issues. He finds the opportunity to play such a big role in the lives of young students to be a huge blessing. Ogunlowo was just inducted into the Sigma Circle last semester, so he is excited to meet more people and make more memories this semester. He says that being surrounded by such high-achieving and dedicated students is truly an inspiration. In his free time, he loves watching soccer and reading books.

A Spring 2017 graduate of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, Adam Berger, Spring Adam will be 2016 Inductee and building upon Spring 2017 Graduate his B.S. in of A. James Clark Bioengineering School of Engineering by earning a MD-PhD degree from Harvard Medical School and MIT. Asking Adam what he’s been up to since graduation and how ODK has impacted his post-grad journey, he responds “The week after graduating, I took a summer road trip with some of my classmates for a few weeks, hiking many miles through 6 national parks and driving over 6000 miles. It was a great experience, allowing me to disconnect and unwind before my next journey! I am now a student once again; this time, in an MD-PhD program joint between Harvard Medical

School and MIT. I have enjoyed everything I have learned so far, and I am excited for the many years of continued education, research, and experience that lie ahead. Between long hours in the classroom and lab, I have also been finding time to run and bike around Boston; I even learned how to sail on the Charles River! To me, ODK has impacted my post-grad life by encouraging me to always strive to be the best leader possible. I try to lead through exemplary action, but also know when to let others, who may have more expertise than me, step up to the plate. I think that this balance is something that I learned from the many great leaders (students, faculty, and staff) that surrounded me during my time in the Sigma Circle. To them, I owe much gratitude for the delicate balance in leadership that they showed me.” Grace Cha

Yet, before Grace began her journey into the corporate world she knew she wanted to participate in something meaningful and challenging first. Demonstrating her commitment and enthusiasm for leadership, Grace spent this past summer residing in a teepee as a camp counselor to school-age kids: “Throughout high school and college, I loved to tutor and mentor young students. Their enthusiasm for learning and open-mindedness was a reminder to keep an open perspective in my own life. After graduating, I decided I wanted to spend a summer fully dedicated to children. Having never gone to a summer camp myself, I worked as a camp counselor at Camp Nor'wester in the San Juan Islands of Washington. I was responsible for 23 Mariners - all 10-11 year-old girls. The experience was incredible. I could see the impact that staff members had on campers. We played a role in their engagement in nature and the development of their relationships with each other. It was also a huge learning opportunity for myself as well. I learned how to lead my campers in group discussions on their code of living at camp, and how to bring those values after their summer in their daily lives.”

In New Orleans, I served as an AmeriCorps volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and helped build houses in Katrina-ravaged communities. The experience was a profound one that challenged me physically and inspired me to continue a career in public service. Due to my AmeriCorps experience, I was able to secure a NYC Service Fellowship position, where I’m helping manage AmeriCorps volunteers all across the city of New York. ODK has

been an essential part of post-grad experience. One of the first people I talked to when I moved to NYC was a fellow ODK alum (shout out to Ian Moritz) and it has been so reassuring to have a network of support no matter where I am in the country. PROFILE: ODK STEWARD OF THE FOUNTAIN By Phil Aronson y name is Philip Aronson. Most of my friends and fellow ODKers know me as Phil. I began my freshman year at Maryland in 1971. With the Vietnam war still raging, the anti-war movement was in full swing. This was a turbulent time on many college campuses and Maryland was no exception. My first exposure to any kind of "leadership" was listening to the anti-war advocates who spoke to students regularly gathered in front of McKeldin library. Not surprisingly, I joined a fraternity and began to focus on my studies. I had yet to develop any leadership skills. Then, I met my friend and mentor, Dru Bagwell, and things began to change. I became active in Greek Life and several other student groups in which I served in various leadership roles. In the early 1970's, the Sigma Circle was far from the strong and vibrant organization that it is today. As some of you may know, Dr. Dru

M

ODK Phil Aronson with former Faculty Secretary, Dru Bagwell, at the ODK 90th Anniversary Celebration

Bagwell made it his goal to revitalize the circle and make ODK, and its mission, vision and values, a fundamental part of campus life at the University of Maryland. As a student who played a small part in this resurgence, my initiation into the Sigma Circle of ODK (and later on having my name inscribed on the fountain)

were proud days indeed. Following graduation, I was honored to be asked to serve as a Voting Alumni for the Sigma Circle, which I viewed both as a commitment and as a way of giving back. Giving back, I think, can be accomplished in a few of different ways. Time and money are two of them. As a young working guy, I was lucky enough to have a schedule which allowed me to leave work and get back to campus in time to attend ODK meetings, which I did. Selection meetings, which in those days were held during the week, were the most important. I also went to initiation ceremonies whenever I could. Some forty plus years later and happily retired, I still attend ODK meetings and programs on a regular basis. After I retired, it was time for me to give back in that other way. So, after just enough "friendly encouragement" from Dru, I made my decision and became a Steward of the Fountain.
