work, and exude contagious enthusiasm. Here at Maryland, I am studying Mechanical Engineering and Economics with a minor in International Engineering. Outside of classes, I am active in the Women in Engineering Department, Engineers Without Borders, and the Student Government Association. I treasure the supportive, collaborative culture here and enjoy giving back on campus and in the College Park community.

Despite the new traffic patterns, buildings, and sports opponents, the energy and pride on this campus are a constant that continue to make me a proud Terp!

This semester has gotten off to a great start with circle-wide events, an ODK-sponsored lecture, and selections and tapping. We are focusing on strengthening the Sigma Circle community by building deeper relationships between current members and with alumni.

We look forward to the remainder of the semester’s social events, com-

munity service, and Induction Ceremony. Particularly, we are excited for the Homecoming Student Leadership Reception on November 7th. Please join us before the football game for this annual event which will be held in Cole Field House for the final time this year! It is always a treat for current members to meet and connect with our incredible alumni!

One of my favorite parts about ODK is that it connects people who would not otherwise cross paths. We come from different pillars, corners of campus, and decades to celebrate and practice leadership among truly inspirational individuals. The rest of the officers and I are elated to lead the Sigma Circle in another year of growing and supporting leaders among leaders.

Message from the Faculty Secretary Hello ODK! Welcome back! side from the near miss of Hurricane Joaquin and the torrential rains that made for a wet Family Weekend, it has been a mild fall in College Park.

The campus is busy with new students and new construction. Construction for the Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center is heavily underway on the Mall and along Campus Drive. The Hotel at the University of Maryland is rising quickly on Route 1. See the article on The New UMD for more updates.

The project includes six new collaborative classrooms and new office space for the American Studies department, Olen said.

Over on North Campus, the University broke ground on A. James Clark Hall and began renovations for Cambridge Hall this summer. Clark Hall, which will expand space for the Clark School of Engineering, and especially the bioengineering department, is going up near the current Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building and is expected to be completed in Fall 2016, according to The Diamondback. Cambridge Hall is getting new building systems, bathrooms

This fall, we had a record-breaking selections process. 397 undergrads applied to the Sigma Circle and 52 were selected, along with one graduate student, two faculty/staff, and four alumni. Our fall induction ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, December 6 at 3:00 pm in the Memorial Chapel, followed by a reception in the Colony Ballroom. All are invited!!

Thanks for the outstanding response to our ODK Alumni Involvement Survey that recently went out. We have gotten great feedback about mentoring, offering internships, job shadowing and getting more involved as alums of the Sigma Circle.

We will be back in touch with those who expressed interest in different

types of involvement.

We hope you will come celebrate with us at the Homecoming Student Leadership Reception on Saturday, November 7th from 1:30-3:30 pm in Cole Field House before the Terps take on Wisconsin.

It promises to be a wonderful reunion – and our last in Cole before renovations begin for the new football practice facility.

And with this university’s largest individual donation, construction will begin on the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science and Innovation in late spring. The building will house instructional and research space for the College of Computer, Math and Natural Sciences and the Clark School of Engineering, Olen said, taking over parking lot space across from the engineering fields, on the other side of Campus Drive.

“The new academic buildings show not just a commitment to state of the art buildings, but that the University is focusing on teaching its students to be leaders in the largest growing fields….that will be so important moving forward,” Ronk said.

By Emily Schweich, Sigma Circle Officer t’s been a busy fall for the Omicron Delta Kappa Sigma Circle. After many members graduated in the spring, the Circle has worked hard to recruit new members and engage old ones.

On September 24, the William L. Thomas ODK Lecture Series cosponsored the Voices of Social Change lecture featuring feminist and civil rights activist Angela Davis. Davis spoke to the audience about black solidarity, police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement.

This year the Sigma Circle received a record number of 397 applications. At a six-hour selection meeting on September 27, members and voting alumni selected 59 new members, who were tapped in October and will be officially inducted at a ceremony on December 6.

LEADER To celebrate the end of fall selections, the Sigma Circle held a welcome back happy hour at Cornerstone Grill and Loft on September 28 for members and alumni to reconnect after the start of the new school year.

A NEW PAGE IN LEADERSHIP FOR THE SIGMA CIRCLE

By Ian Moritz, Sigma Circle Officer his summer, the Omicron Delta Kappa Sigma Circle joined “The New York Times inLeadership” program. The program provides the opportunity to engage in structured leadership discussions and personal reflection, as well as a medium to give back.

The primary section of the program is The Daily Article, which develops a conversation around critical leadership practices from recently published New York Times articles.

For example, on September 14th the daily article was: “Panel Studying Racial Divide in Missouri Presents a Blunt Picture of Inequity” by Monica Davey. The New York Times inLeadership develops a discussion around this article by linking to studies, highlighting similar current events, and asking challenging leadership questions. This particular article focused on topics like stakeholders, limits of authority, the media and the message, and engaging in uncomfortable discussions.

The program also has sections that include insights from business executives, thoughts from scholars and practitioners, current leadership events, and detailed case studies.

At first, many experienced leaders, especially those in the ODK community, may overlook the benefits from discussion on current events as they relate to leadership.

However, this program adds much more; for instance, it offers a fresh method to self reflect and a chance to give back.

Oftentimes, we lead without taking time for reflection. But reflection is essential to improvement; it allows us as leaders to think critically, analyze our experiences, and find areas of improvement. Educator John Dewey once said: “We do not learn from experience … we learn from reflecting on experience.” New York Times inLeadership develops the essential reflection aspect of leadership; it challenges us to be introspective,

go beyond the obvious, and ask ourselves tough questions.

With the leadership practices that we have learned, absorbed and experienced, we have valuable knowledge that can benefit our community.

Sharing our experiences is one way to give back, and we can do that through providing thoughtful responses to challenging discussion topics. Another way to give back is to use case studies provided by the program that offer an experiential learning opportunity for students interested in enhancing their leadership abilities.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT TERPS AFTER DARK? s you may have heard in the news, the University of Maryland has started serving alcohol in the stadiums this fall.

Championed by student leaders and supported by the University’s Athletic Council, this is a one year pilot program designed to improve the fan experience, increase game attendance, and decrease tailgating. The University is taking the money that is being raised through selling alcohol and investing it back into alcohol-prevention efforts on the campus – Terps After Dark, a six week late night programming series. The idea behind Terps After Dark is to provide fun opportunities and alcohol-free events on the campus, primarily focused on

freshmen. Each weekend for the first six weeks of school featured about seven to 10 activities designed to go late into the night. Every week’s activities began Thursday night and ended Saturday night.

Coordinated by a committee composed of staff and students, the series of events featured a wide variety of opportunities. Highlights ranged from Bubble Ball (imagine playing soccer inside a giant plastic bubble with only your feet sticking out), a Dive-In movie (watching Jurassic World in an inner tube in the outdoor pool) and a Silent Dis-Glow (envision a silent rave where everyone is wearing headphones and dancing to the same music but there is no sound) to exciting

events like the Trevor Noah Comedy Show, free food at the dining hall, and the NextNow Fest at the Clarice.

The attendance at most events exceeded all expectations – demonstrating that students do want fun, alcohol-free, late night entertainment.

Part of the reason this initiative was created was to increase the awareness of students of all the great things to do on-campus, and trying to address concerns about the pilot program to sell alcohol in the stadium. By all accounts, this inaugural Terps After Dark program was a huge success!

James Bond, an ODK Voting Alum, introduced Amy Liang, a current member, to the University Student Judiciary and played a huge role in Amy choosing to attend UMD! Dina Broydo and Liya Ai, both current ODK members, were freshmen year roommates in LaPlata Hall.

Although they’ve now moved to an apartment, they still live together!

ODK SUMMER EXPERIENCES

By Brogan Sheehey, Sigma Circle Officer uring summer break, ODK members made great use of their free time when classes weren’t in session. From traveling the globe to testing out future career paths, Sigma Circle members accomplished quite a bit!

Kayla Coutts spent part of her summer break studying in Cape Town, South Africa. From tutoring younger students to climbing the Lyon’s Head Mountain, she certainly made the most of her study abroad experience!

abroad in Alicante, Spain, where she worked on completing her Spanish minor and practicing the language as much as possible, especially with her amazing host family. She also had the opportunity to travel around the Mediterranean region on the weekends. In all, it was “un verano muy especial” (a very special summer).

Critical Language Scholarship Program. She intends to work abroad in the infectious disease field in the future, so acquiring language skills is essential. Avan can wholeheartedly say that this was her most memorable and eye-opening summer yet!

Over the summer, Dina Broydo worked at Grant Thornton LLP as a Forensic and Valuation Services Intern. Over the course of 10 weeks, she got to experience the work of a forensic accountant, visit five different Grant Thornton offices, and explore the charms of Baltimore City and DC. The summer was definitely a success, as Dina will be returning to GT after graduation as a Forensic and Valuation Services Associate.

Amy Liang spent her summer working in the Technology Consulting branch of the SC&H Group, and loved every minute of her experience.

He enjoyed the challenging projects in a changing industry, meeting up with ODK alumni, exploring restaurants in different parts of the city, and watching American Pharaoh win the Triple Crown. He also took a road trip to Purdue University and talked up the Terps Men’s Basketball team 172 days in advance of Purdue coming to the Xfinity Center!

Experiences continued from page 8 found time to travel. Highlights included a road trip with her family around Scotland and England and visiting Facebook Headquarters and catching a glimpse of Mark Zuckerburg!

This summer, Austin Trupp worked as a director for Brainy Camps through Children's Hospital, which is a set of camps that brings together kids with various chronic health conditions to give them a full, normal camp experience. This was Austin’s sixth straight summer working at these camps, and he had an absolute blast!

Alex Wilson found time during his summer for both work and travel.

When he wasn’t working in his internship for Point72 Asset Management, he did a cross-country road trip from Maryland to California and back. In all, the trip took 19 days and Alex got to see 24 different states.

For part of the summer, Ori Gutin interned with the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), which

LEADER is a non-partisan environmental think-tank in DC. He also interned with GreeNEWit, an energy efficiency company in Howard County, MD. His responsibilities included managing a weekly climate change newsletter with an audience of 4,500+, writing research papers, and even creating materials for educating students aged K-5 about sustainability.

This summer, Emily Schweich worked as a general assignment intern at the NBC News Washington Bureau. Highlights of her internship included witnessing the Supreme Court's Obamacare decision, chasing John Kerry down the hall to get his thoughts on the Iran nuclear deal, working with the Nightly News senior producer on an investigative story, and producing her own story for the NBC News Contributor Network.

John Ford ’64, was the proud recipient of the Neumann University Presidential Humanitarian Award.

This award is given to an individual whose life reflects a commitment to serve humanity and empower the underserved in our society; devotion to religious and family values; dedication to excellence; value for philanthropy and giving back; willingness to take risks in the pursuit of vision; and a demonstrated value for education and a positive intellectual life. John is founder and principal of John C. Ford Associates, consultants specializing in organizational development and communication which includes seminar development, delivery and executive coaching. John and his wife, Sandra, reside in Manhattan, where he served as a member of the parish council and is a lector at Holy Trinity

Greg Hollen ’76, was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of North Texas (UNT) Business School, at the annual Business Gala there, for efforts in the Professional Leadership Program (PLP) Mentoring Program.

This program provides professional mentors for over 125 junior and senior student leaders on the UNT campus; the group meets weekly to cover many aspects of the career experience.

The University President, Academic Vice President, and Dean of the Business school were all on hand for this recognition, given only twice before in the twenty years of the program!

*Rick Jaklitsch ’79, was selected by The Daily Record to receive the 2015 Leadership in Law Award. Twentyseven members of the legal community throughout Maryland were recognized for their outstanding work.

Nominations were received from The Daily Record's readers in addition to area law firms, bar associations, chambers of commerce and the business and legal communities at large.

Nominees were asked to complete an application that outlined their career accomplishments, community involvement and mentoring activities that would distinguish them as outstanding leaders in the law. An external panel of judges and a representative of The Daily Record reviewed the nominations and made the selections. The Daily Record launched the Leadership in Law Awards in 2001 as a way to recognize the outstanding work being done by members of the legal community throughout Maryland.

Myriam Leger ’87, is happy to report that her daughter is a member of the freshman class of UMD this Fall 2015 and is a Banneker Key Scholar in the Honors College. Myriam is looking forward to her getting acquainted with ODK and its tradition of excellence.

demonstrated through professional accomplishments, community leadership and mentoring. Nearly 400 were nominated for the statewide honor.

Nominees were asked to complete an application outlining their educational and career history, professional and community involvement, corporate and nonprofit board memberships, and mentoring experience. A panel of judges comprised of business professionals and past Maryland's Top 100 Women winners from throughout Maryland reviewed the applications and selected this year's honorees.

Robert Gagnon ’88, was shocked and pleased to be named one of the initial ten UMD alumni to have been inducted into the University of Maryland Clark School of Engineering Distinguished Alumni in the Department of Fire Protection Engineering. He served as an adjunct lecturer there for 18 years, edited the 40th and 50th Anniversary Fire Protection Engineering History Books, established a scholarship in the Department and issued 40 scholarship awards to students, wrote four fire protection engineering text books, served as President of the University of Maryland Engineering Alumni Chapter, and served as President of the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers. Robert is retired but performs some consulting and expert witness work, as well as constantly updating new editions of his books.

Lisa Carchedi ’89, is the Chief of Staff at Seton Shoal Creek Psychiatric Hospital. She is working in the psychiatric emergency room and doing research in Team Based Learning.

Christina Martin (DiNunzio) ’02, was waving her Maryland flag during the NCAA Tournament last spring and her neighbor came down to ask if she had gone to Maryland ...

Christina assured her with a yes. Her neighbor’s husband, Don Willis '62, had also attended Maryland.

Christina was so excited to have another Terp on the street! She was even more excited to find out that they both are members of Omicron Delta Kappa. What a small world to live in Indianapolis, IN and meet someone who just lives four houses down that also shares their love for the Terps! Now they will both be flying their Maryland flags proudly!

LEADER came back to campus this past fall to recruit, she was able to see her name on the fountain for the first time!

She is also working hard towards a double degree--M.B.A. and MS in Global Supply Chain Management!

*Alden Gross ’05, and fiancée Ruth are now engaged. They were on a family vacation to Norway, and went on a grueling 14 hour hike to Trolltunga, near Odda, featuring icy terrain, steep rock climbs, waterfalls, and majestic views. Alden took her out on the end of a 7 meter rocky plank jutting from a cliff face 700 meters high. She said yes!
