ven if you were not able to watch the exciting debut of Head Football Coach Randy Edsall during the Maryland v. Miami football game, you surely heard the national uproar regarding the new “Maryland Pride” uniforms. When the Terps emerged from the Gossett Team House, they were covered from head to toe with the Maryland State flag. The wild helmet featured the black-and-yellow check- A Maryland football player shows off new uniform honoring the Maryland ered pattern on one side State Flag. Unlike old uniforms, the Maryland Pride uniforms were missing the players’ names on the back. Coach Edsall commented on this, saying that it was more important to see the school’s name. or a few days this August, University of Maryland students wondered why three of the marble stones on the famous ODK Fountain in the heart of campus were missing. The solution to this mystery is that the names of the Fall 2008 through Spring 2011 inductees were being engraved. Now that the stones have been replaced, all the names of Newly engraved names on the ODK the inductees of the Fountain. Sigma Circle since it’s inception in 1927 are currently inscribed in stone for all to see. This includes almost 4,000 Maryland Terrapins to date. There is a rich history behind the Fountain, beginning when former Faculty Secretary Drury Bagwell envisioned the creation of a permanent memorial to the University of Maryland ODK leaders. Report, and 36th in the World by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Our status as a world-renowned university can be linked with many of the changes happening on campus. The university is expanding with the construction of a brand new physical sciences building for the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, the opening of Oakland Hall which is a brand new suitestyle residence hall on North Campus for sophomores, and our brand new all-you-can-eat dining hall called 251 North. Maryland is also making strides towards becoming more environmentally friendly with the commitment to building LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings and green roofs on a few campus buildings, including the dining halls and the Stamp Student Union. Of course the beginning of a new semester means the start of the application and selection process for ODK. We reached out to the most talented student leaders by tabling at the First Look Fair, sent

out information on listservs across campus, and by word of mouth as well. With our largest application pool ever with over 250 applications, we are excited to honor another outstanding group of campus leaders committed to the university, and the Fall 2011 initiates will be initiated in early December. As you saw on page 1, the football team debuted one design of their new Under Armour uniforms in the season opener victory versus Miami on September 5. Despite Mother Nature’s attempt to wash the students out of the stadium, not even the downpour kept us from enjoying the game; the student section remained packed until the conclusion of the game. It is the remarkable school spirit and pride that really sets our university apart from other schools and has our strong alumni base coming back to campus to cheer on the Terps. We hope we were able to join us on campus for the Homecoming Game and for those of you who graduated in the past three years, your names are now on the Fountain! Go Terps!

New Uniforms from page 1 and designed by Under Armour, whose founder and CEO, Kevin Plank, is a Maryland alumnus and former UMD football player. Although the flag-emblazoned uniforms have been worn for the first and last time as they have been auctioned off, Maryland players have taken the field each week in one of four different jerseys, four different pant styles and two variant helmets. Each

of the new designs was exciting. We plan to support our team with as much pride as the uniforms showcased. Whether or not you liked the new uniforms, one thing is for certain: It’s not about the uniform, but the team wearing them. And that team started the season, on the national stage, with a win!

Message from the Faculty Secretary By Brooke Lecky Supple, Ph.D., Sigma Circle Faculty Secretary Hello ODK! am delighted to be writing to you in my first semester as Faculty Secretary. As you saw in the last newsletter, my esteemed predecessor, Dr. Jim Osteen, retired in May and I took over as the new Faculty Secretary this summer. He left me very big shoes to fill, but I am so excited to work with the most important leadership honor society on campus! As you can see from other articles in this issue, we had an eventful summer on campus. We had three stones engraved on the Fountain and now all those initiated from 2008 through 2011 have their names engraved on the ODK Fountain. Pictures are now up on the website, but please visit the Fountain and take a picture next time you are

on campus. This fall I am so fortunate to work with a fabulous group of ODK Officers! Led by President Melissa Nathanson, we are looking to improve the selection process and enhance the sense of community among current ODK members. We had our first online selection process this fall, eliminating the use of tons of paper and saving dozens of trees in the process! Stay tuned for news about our continued efforts. In addition to the exciting efforts of ODK, the campus has had a lively start this fall. We weathered a hurricane and earthquake on campus in one week, debuted a new football uniform that made national news, and beat the University of Miami at our first sell-out football game in several seasons. In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11, over 1,000 members of the campus community participated in a Walk for Remembrance at the labyrinth in

the Garden of Reflection and Remembrance. Each person walked in honor of someone who lost their life on 9/11. Dr. Loh also held a beautiful, memorable ceremony on McKeldin Mall just below the ODK Fountain on the morning of September 12. Several hundred students, faculty and staff were moved by Dr. Loh’s remarks, music performed by our students and faculty, and prayers for peace from our Chaplains. All in all, it was a very fitting tribute for the campus. As always, please keep us informed of any changes to your contact information and provide us with updates about your lives. Visit www.odk.umd.edu to update us electronically. Enjoy the remainder of the fall and we hope to see you at Maryland Day 2012 on Saturday, April 28, 2012!

NEW RESIDENT HALL AND ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT DINING HALL OPEN ON CAMPUS By Lisa Davies, Sigma Circle Ritualist Oakland Hall, a 700-student residence hall, and 251 North, an “all-you-can-eat” dining hall, opened in the Denton Community to an excited student body this fall. Both facilities were much needed due to the increase in students in the past few years and are unlike anything the university has ever seen. Oakland Hall is a state-of-theart facility for mostly sophomores,

with almost all semi-suite style rooms, including two double-size bedrooms connected by a bathroom. Each floor is complete with two study lounges, two entertainment lounges, and laundry facilities. All of Oakland Hall has air conditioning, and students are allowed to have microwaves in their bedrooms for the first time. “We haven’t had a new residence hall built at the University of Maryland since 1982

ODK Executive Board Members celebrate the Fountain engraving What does your name on the Fountain mean to you? Lisa Davies (Ritualist): I’m leaving my permanent mark on Maryland! Christina Buckless (Vice President): I’ll be a Terp forever! Melissa Nathanson (President): Part of me will always be in the heart of campus. Robbie Rosenthal (Scholarship Chair): It’s my opportunity to leave my legacy on this campus. Scott Shuffield (Secretary Treasurer): My time at Maryland has been “set in stone.” Michele Fried (Historian): Dreaming of seeing my name etched into the ODK Fountain since 9th grade…I felt incredibly proud of my hard work and achievements. What was your reaction to seeing your name on the Fountain? Christina Buckless (Vice President): I almost cried! I took a picture and first, sent it to my parents, and second, put it on Facebook! Lisa Davies (Ritualist): I was so excited! I took a ton of pictures! Fountain Fun Fact: 4 out of 9 executive board members have swum in the Fountain!

with New Leonardtown, so this was definitely something that we needed on this campus,” said Resident Hall Association president, Corie Stretton.“We’re really excited to see that it’s finally happened.” 251 North is in the center of the Denton Community, surrounded by Denton Hall, Elkton Hall, Oakland Hall, and Easton Hall. The main part of the dining hall is a large room with food stations and seating. In the entrance to the main area is a coffee/ice cream bar called Cool Beans. A separate entrance leads to the 24 Shop, a 24-hour convenience store that students are now calling the “D-Con.” Since the dining hall is all-youcan-eat, students now have “meals” added to their dining plans that are

specifically for 251 North. To regulate traffic to this dining hall, “meal” use is limited so that students can only eat there once a week—or use 11 points on their dining plan if they want to go again. When asked if this meal system will eventually be universal across campus, Stretton said, “It is not the plan to my knowledge. We get a lot of positive feedback about the à la carte menu from a lot of students, so we think is good for them to have both options available.” The University will evaluate the effectiveness of 251 North at the end of the school year, but for now it remains the talk of North Campus.

Fountain Engraving from page 1 tiers to represent the five areas of campus involvement honored by ODK: (1) scholarship; (2) athletics; (3) campus or community service, social, and religious activities, and campus government; (4) journalism, speech, and the mass media; (5) creative and performing arts. It serves as a tribute to ODK leaders as well as a symbol of unity on campus. Names are usually engraved every two to three years on alternating slabs. The Fountain was originally intended to mimic the Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. Most people don’t know that the metal bars placed between each stone slab were initially installed to serve as “speed bumps” to deter skateboarders from attempting to ride down the Fountain. It also prevents chipping of the stones.

4

Former Sigma Circle Faculty Secretary Jim Osteen, who worked on campus for 32 years, commented on the significance of the Fountain to the Sigma Circle and ODK as a whole. “I think the Fountain is a wonderful addition to the campus landscape. It is a site that draws lots of people every day to sit and enjoy its beauty. It also represents the important areas honored by ODK and is a terrific recruitment tool for the Sigma Circle. Students learn about ODK from the first tour they take on campus as high school students because the Fountain is there.” We invite you to come see the newest names engraved on the Fountain. You can also view photos of the stones at www.odk.umd.edu.

TWO ODKERS WIN THE SPIRIT OF MARYLAND AWARD By Jennifer Cohen, Newsletter Editor The five female and five male finalists lined up on the field during halftime at the homecoming game. They had all been nominated for the award by faculty members, written numerous essays, and gone through an interview. They had ridden in the Homecoming Parade the day before around campus. Finally, the winners were announced. The Spirit of Maryland winners for 2011 are Lisa Davies and Robbie Rosenthal, who are two members of the ODK Executive Board this year.

ODK: What does the Spirit of Maryland award mean to you? Lisa: “I really like being involved on campus and I get a lot out of that, but it’s really nice to get recognition for loving Maryland.” Robbie: “It means having all of your hard work pay off, and knowing that even though you did things that were tough at the time it was well worth it. Being the Spirit of Maryland is more than just winning the award, it’s knowing that you represent what it means to be a Terp. “

ODK: What do you like most about UMD?

Lisa: I like that anywhere I go I can always meet someone that I get along with. I always find people who have similar interests as me and I can connect with, but at the same time there are new and interesting people that I can learn from. Robbie: You can get involved in anything that you want to and have the opportunity to grow inside and outside the classroom and do whatever fits you best. No matter who you are, there is something here for you.

ODK: What are you involved with on campus? Lisa: The group I am most committed to on campus is the Mighty Sound of Maryland. I am also involved in ODK, Maryland Images Campus Tour Guides, Honors Ambassadors, the Writing Center, Pep Band, University Chorale, and Intramurals. Robbie: I am a Founding Father of Beta Theta Pi and I am involved in ODK and the University Student Judiciary. I am also a Resident Assistant, a staff member of the College Park Scholars Public Leadership program, and a Teaching Assistant for Federal Semester.

ODK: What’s your favorite Testudo on campus? Lisa: My favoriteTestudo is

6

the one on the football field. Before every football game, after the football players run out and rub his nose for good luck, the band also gets to rub his nose for good luck. The band and football players are the only ones who rub his nose before games. It gets me psyched for the game. Robbie: My favorite Testudo is the one in front of McKeldin because it’s the original one and it has such long lasting tradition. Plus, you get to overlook the mall while you’re rubbing his nose. I think it is one of the centerpieces of our campus and is a place I go to if I need a little good luck on an exam.

ODK LECTURE SERIES Laughing at Our Differences featuring Josh Sundquist- Oct. 18th Josh Sundquist is an inspiring comedic motivational speaker, one-legged Paralympic ski racer, and author. In “Laughing at Our Differences,” students were able to witness Josh’s unique speaking style and hilarious stories about his own life and emotional experiences. It was a motivational and entertaining speech for all. This event was sponsored by SEE, Stamp and was the ODK Drury G. Bagwell Lecture.

First Year Book Lecture – Oct. 26th The First Year Book program brought in Mr. David “Sonny” Lacks, Henrietta Lacks’ son, for an inspiring lecture on the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It detailed the story of how sixty years ago scientists at Johns Hopkins University used the cells of Henrietta Lacks—a poor, black woman—for research without her permission. Although her cells have helped develop drugs for diseases such as polio, cancer, and hemophilia, her story sparked controversy about ethics in the medical profession because she was not compensated for them. The speakers talked about how ethical practices in medical research can be prevented today, and it was an enlightening lecture for the students, professors, and residents in attendance. This event was sponsored by the First Year Book program and William L. Thomas Omicron Delta Kappa Lecture.
