fancifully decorated tables and a majestic, red carpet gracing the entrance, the evening had a star-studded feel. I would like to extend a special thank you to Ms. Joanna Shieh, Calvert Cotillion Chair, for her terrific work in helping to plan what was truly a magnificent evening. February also marked the beginning of the selection and tapping season for the Society. We received over 220 extraordinary applications this semester. The circle worked diligently and welcomed an outstanding Spring 2011 class, including President Loh! The Society is also busy reviewing applications for the Top Ten Freshmen and Sophomore Leader of the Year awards. These stellar leaders will be recognized at the University Awards Banquet in May. This semester marks a time of transition for the Society as we congratulate Dr. Jim Osteen on his retirement. Jim has graciously served as

Faculty Secretary of Omicron Delta Kappa for the past ten years. His exemplary leadership, committed service, and captivating energy contributed tremendously to the success of the Sigma Circle and it is with a warm and thankful heart that we wish him all the best in his retirement. Sustaining this trend of exemplary leadership, Dr. Brooke Supple, Chief of Staff to the Vice President for Student Affairs, will become the Sigma Circle’s next Faculty Secretary. The Society is thrilled to welcome Brooke and we wish her continued success! Finally, I invite each of you to join ODK this Maryland Day (April 30th) to take part in “Fun at the Fountain.” Why not cool off at the foot of the Omicron Delta Kappa Fountain and reunite with ODK alumni? I hope to see you there! Respectfully yours, David Nelson President

Osteen Retires from page 1 calm, steady grace, Jim consistently offered sound direction and guidance. When asked what advice he would give his successor, Jim responded, “Enjoy every minute. Enjoy the students and the time spent working with them.” For the tireless effort you have

demonstrated in your work here at the University and with the Sigma Circle, we thank you dearly, Jim. Your dedication to student development has left a lasting impression on this Society and this University. We wish you the very best in your retirement!

geniality and diligence, all qualities that are required to advise students who are “leaders among leaders”. The ODK Sigma Circle is proud and thrilled to welcome Dr. Brooke Supple as our new Faculty-Secretary.

Message from the Faculty Secretary By Sigma Circle Faculty Secretary, Jim Osteen Greetings from College Park! This will be the last “Greetings from College Park” you will see from me in the ODK Leader. As reported elsewhere in this newsletter, I am retiring from the University at the end of this semester. I have enjoyed over three decades of association with this great University and 28 years of involvement with the Sigma Circle, the last ten as the Faculty Secretary. What a great experience it has been. On this occasion I would like to take the opportunity to thank a few people. First, I am grateful for the continued support of Vice President Linda Clement for the work we do in Student Affairs with ODK. Dr. Clement, has recognized the importance of honoring student leaders who distinguish themselves during their time at Maryland. She has provided significant resources to support our outreach efforts to ODK alumni. I am indebted to Dru Bagwell, the former Sigma Circle Faculty Secretary. I have appreciated the chance to follow in his footsteps

because he was a terrific role model for how to do this job. His vision for the ODK Scholarship Program and the ODK Lecture Series has set a course for us that will continue for years to come. And, I am also very thankful for the good work that the Sigma Circle student officers have done over the years. The opportunity to work with such bright, committed, and competent student leaders for this past decade as the Faculty Secretary has been a wonderful experience – one that I will cherish for many years. I am grateful for the tireless and professional work of my assistant, Zimri Diaz. Zimri, like Jillian Martin, Marie Jenkins, and Brenda Salas in previous years, has made everything work on a day to day basis. From preparing tapping materials to proofreading newsletters and everything in between, such assistance is priceless. Thanks to Dr. Bill Fourney, who has served as the Faculty Advisor for ODK during my entire term as Faculty Secretary. He and the other Voting Faculty in the Sigma Circle have been wonderful advisors and mentors for the student members and have given their time and energy generously. And, lastly, I am very appreciative of the loyal support and assistance of

3

ODK alumni. Over the years, ODK alums have served as active Voting Alums in the Sigma Circle, mentored our students, offered suggestions for new initiatives, and overall been extremely supportive of ODK. I am also indebted to the financial support of alums. Through your generous gifts over this past decade, we have doubled the funds in our foundation to underwrite the scholarship and lecture programs. I look forward to a wonderful future for the Sigma Circle under the guidance of my successor, Dr. Brooke Supple. Brooke has been a terrific campus citizen and active supporter of ODK for many years, having served on the ODK Lecture Committee and helping with ODK receptions at Homecoming. She brings new energy and commitment to taking ODK to the next level at Maryland. It would be great to see as many alums as possible at Maryland Day on April 30th. Please stop by the ODK Fountain to say hello if you can. Thanks for everything. Jim Osteen Sigma Circle Faculty Secretary

AN EVENING TO REMEMBER By Joanna Shieh On February 19, Omicron Delta Kappa and the Senior Council hosted a treasured Maryland tradition, the Calvert Cotillion Senior Formal. This year’s theme was “Red Carpet Affair” and featured a night of glitz and glamour, complete with gold stars,

Oscar trophies, and a red carpet. A Walk of Fame featured Maryland stars such as President Wallace Loh, Gary Williams and Connie Chung. Seniors had the opportunity to take home photo memories of the dance by pos-

ing with fun props at the photobooth. With the generous help and support of the Maryland Alumni Association and Pepsi, seniors had a night to remember.
