t's the 10th Anniversary of Maryland Day! The University of Maryland's extremely popular open house will be held Saturday, April 26, and this year there will be something very special. University Dining Services will distribute 50,000 cupcakes on Hornbake Plaza. Folks are already hard at work baking chocolate, red, gold and white cupcakes to be assembled to form the university seal and, (continued on page 2)

hannon Auxier has been a leader from the first day she arrived on campus, entering Maryland as a member of the prestigious honors program and being actively involved as a member of the University of Maryland Dance Team. During the next few years at Maryland, she continued her involvement in these activities and took on greater leadership roles as well. She served as an Honors 100 Section Leader and Student Coordinator and later was both a teaching assistant and research assistant in her major. She became the Co-Captain then Team Captain for the University of Maryland Dance Team. She has served as the Vice President and then President of the

hat a great year we’ve had so far! As always, ODK has been involved in many aspects of campus life and we have more plans for the remainder of the year. The Calvert Cotillion was our most recent success. Thanks to our Calvert Cotillion Chair Shannon Auxier the event was great! ODK members turned out

in large numbers and continued to make it a spectacular tradition. Our Fall and Spring selection meetings were very successful. We received almost 200 applications each semester and selected an impressive group of leaders. Special thanks to all our faculty, staff and alumni who participated! Furthermore, our Vice President Jesse Chen led a great group of ODKers in the selection process of the ODK Top 10 Freshmen and Sophomore Leader of the Year. The recipients will be announced at the Annual Awards Banquet in May sponsored by the Office of Campus

Last year’s event drew more than 77,000 visitors to the campus, and this year’s open house promises to be even bigger and better with 400 free, interactive events across the campus. Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Shannon has also committed herself to the Relay for Life, a campus event that raises funds for the American Cancer Society. In Fall 2007, Shannon was selected as one of the Spirit of Maryland winners. In ODK Shannon has been a very active officer serving as the Chair of

the Calvert Cotillion Planning Committee. This year’s event, cosponsored with the Senior Council, was the most successful Cotillion in recent memory. As a member of the ODK Executive Board, Shannon is always the first to volunteer and never skips a beat. You can always count on her to take care of every detail in any task she undertakes.

I also hope to see each of you at Vice President Clement’s breakfast reception at the start of the day. This is the 10th anniversary of Maryland Day and it looks as if it will be the best ever. PLANNING FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS By Devin Ellis rovost Nariman Farvardin has only been on the job since July, but has tackled the awesome task of creating a new Strategic Plan for the University to cover the next ten years with energy and ambition. The document, which will lay out a vision for how the University will break into the ranks of the Top Ten over the coming decade, will include some significant changes. I have been privileged to sit on the Steering Committee for the new

plan along with the Vice Presidents, a handful of Deans, faculty/staff, and an undergraduate student Senator. The document has been broken into several major segments covering general education (CORE), graduate education, international programs, research and development, the surrounding community, faculty and staff, among others. A significant amount of work has gone into creating each of these segments by specially assembled subcommittees, and the first draft has been submitted to the

University community for review and feedback. Over the next two months further drafts, incorporating the comments and ideas from across the community will be created. The goal is to present the finished plan by the end of the semester. I hope you will take a few moments to visit the strategic planning website at www.sp07.umd.edu and offer your feedback on Maryland’s future!

ODK WALKS FOR THE HOMELESS By Diana Bernstein & Adam Cohn n the early hours of the brisk morning of Saturday, November 17th, a group of ODK members congregated at the College Park metro station. Bundled up in coats and scarves, we made our way down to the National Mall where we were joined by thousands of other participants of the annual Help the Homeless Walkathon. For the past 20 years, the Fannie Mae Foundation has sponsored the annual walkathon to raise funds and awareness to support the homeless population in the Washington metropolitan area. Through 2007, the event has cumulatively raised more than $62.5 million for local non-profit organizations that help homeless people work towards living independent lives. This wonderful service experience also opened an opportunity to tour our nation’s capital. Together we appreciated the scenery along the Potomac River and even stopped for a photo with an honorary ODK inductee, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his famous pup, Fala. Aside from taking in the sights, we had the chance to know each other on a more personal level.

Upon returning to the mall at the conclusion of the walk, we were greeted by Mayor Fenty of Washington, who shook hands with volunteers and thanked everyone for their contributions. With our t-shirts in hand and

Darius Rucker performing in the background, we walked back to the metro feeling fulfilled with our participation and efforts. Next year, we hope to have an even bigger turnout for this amazing event.

ADAM CHEPENIK – NEW REGION II DIRECTOR By Joe Williams At this year’s ODK National Convention, Adam Chepenik ’04 was elected one of three Region II Directors. Adam will be taking over Regional duties that were previously held by Joe Williams ’06. Adam is currently attending Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts, but when he was at Maryland, he served as the President of the Sigma Circle. Adam is one of three Regional Directors who oversee and manage

over 70 ODK Circles in the Northeast. Duties include maintaining contact with Circles, writing a quarterly newsletter, chartering and re-establishing new Circles at universities, and serving as a liaison with the National Headquarters. Adam was elected during the National Convention which was held in Atlanta Georgia in late February. Every two years, ODK holds a national convention with Regional meet-

ings occurring in the off years. Highlighting this year’s event was a series of discussions and meetings among ODK students, faculty and staff from all over the country. Joe Johns, a prominent CNN correspondent based out of Washington, DC, was a keynote speaker during the convention.

CANDIDATES ON CAMPUS HUCKABEE, CLINTON AND OBAMA ADD UM TO THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL By Lauren Effron or most college students, Monday means back to the daily grind of class and note taking, but for tens of thousands at the University of Maryland, Monday, February 11th meant skipping class. Word got out over the weekend that presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was coming to campus to speak in the middle of the afternoon and nothing – not even waiting for hours in blistering cold temperatures and ice to get in - could hold some students back from catching a glimpse of Obama. Originally scheduled to be in Cole Field House on campus, the event drew such enormous student support through Facebook invites and group announcements that the event was moved to Comcast Center. It was estimated that upwards of 18,000 people attended the event. The energy was just as intense as a Maryland vs. Duke basketball game, complete with the wave started by a small group of students behind the stage, chants of “O-BA-MA,” and boos rang out when the crowd realized yet another guest speaker – not Obama – was approaching the stage. Obama covered the usual array of topics from health care, to the Iraq War, and education. On education Obama said, “I don’t know about you but I think it’s about time we make college affordable for everybody,” he added, “We’re going to have a $4,000 tuition credit – every student, every year – so that young people aren’t burdened by debt.” But that break is no freebie; Obama told the students that he expects something back in return. “You’re going to have to participate in community service, national service, work in a homeless shelter, work in a

veteran’s hall,” he told them. “We’ll invest in you, you invest in America, together we’ll march forward.” Obama struggled to be heard above enormous amounts of cheers and applause as he said, “We cannot afford to wait. We can’t wait to fix our schools; we can’t wait to fix our health care system. We can’t wait to send our young people to college instead of to prison; we can’t wait to stop global warming; we cannot wait to bring this war in Iraq to a close. We cannot wait.” Maryland’s campus was bombarded with campaign stops over the course of a weekend from other frontrunners in a post-Super Tuesday dash to the finish line of the presidential race that the Maryland, Virginia, D.C. primary had expected to provide. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee gave a speech in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union to a crowd of around 1,000 people on Saturday, February 9th.

Huckabee courted a young crowd by touching on subjects ranging from education and the economy to illegal immigration and faith, according to The Diamondback. Huckabee mentioned his own tuition woes as a student and jokingly said he was considering appointing Chuck Norris Secretary of Defense. In his attempt to shave some skepticism on his chances to secure the candidacy, Huckabee told the audience: “I did not major in math - I majored in miracles.” Chelsea Clinton was met by dozens of Hillary supporters as she stumped for her mom in the food court area of the Union the following Sunday morning, but the audience held more adults than students. Complete with a live garage band to play at her entrance, Chelsea hosted a one-hour long question-and-answer session and addressed issues ranging from the war in Iraq to fiscal responsibility to gender equality, according to The Diamondback.

ODK Alumni Updates “Bootie” Cosgrove Mathers ’77, has taken a big step in retirement in Ocean City – she is learning to cook!!!! And, rumor has it that she is a cross between Paula Deen, Rachel Ray, and the Naked Chef!!! [Who knew Bootie could cook!!!]

Bruce Berlage ’’56, was awarded the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Distinguished Alumnus Awards by the University of Maryland Alumni Association. Gordon England ’61 has served as the 29th Deputy Secretary of Defense for the past three years. Recently his wife Dorothy was seen in the press christening the USS New York, a new ship crafted with scrap steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center. Pedro Wasmer ’62, was awarded the Tyser Gottwals Award by the University of Maryland Alumni Association for unique and significant service to the university. This major award was presented at the annual Alumni Gala.

Sabina Mazzanti Baker ’78, and her family have moved “home” to Kennedyville, Maryland. Luis Luna ’78, continues to work as Assistant Administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, spending weekdays in Washington and weekends at home in Salisbury. He also travels a great deal throughout the country

Kim Dawson Aluisi ’80, is continuing to concentrate her Maryland law practice in the area of family law. Her son is now a sophomore at UMCP bringing back to Kim lots of great memories of her own years at UMCP. Tim Andreadis ’81, served as the Chair of the prestigious High Power Microwave Systems and Effects Conference of the Directed Energy Symposium last March, 2007.

Rick Inguanti ’79, as Rick Adamson, continues to freelance on-camera, voiceover, audiobook narration and corporate branding & training projects in the NYC tri-state area and internationally from his home NJ studio. With a wife running for town council and three boys always hungry, he hasn’t been pursuing theatre so much lately. He’s glad to hear that his buddy, Larry Kirsch ’79, may be eastbound again! On a visit to campus last year, he took the time to visit the ODK fountain.

Robert Vincent, II ’82, is a Commander in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Navy. Currently, he is an Appellate Military Judge at the United States Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals.

Lou Magazzu ’79, has resumed his private law practice in Vineland, NJ, and continues his position as President of the New Jersey Association of Counties.

Michelle Friedman ’84, is a counseling psychologist who lives in Slingerlands, NY. She is employed by R.G. Psychological Services, PC.

Lt. Gen. James Clapper ’63, was awarded the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Maryland Alumni Association. Edward Robert Smith ’75 has been the manager of Homeland Security Projects for the Federal Government during the last 5 years. Previously, he served as a professor of microbiology at several colleges and a researcher in vaccine development.

Sheryl Wengel ’84, is working as senior partner with Saterfield and Associates executive search firm. She is a seasoned recruiter with 20 years of relevant experience and success in marketing and sales for Fortune 500 companies in consumer package goods, durables, and banking. Dr. Caryn Brenner Williams ’84 and Dr. Ron Williams ’85, continue their busy lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Caryn is still working with FairCode (reviewing hospital charts) and at Hershey Medical Center, where she teaches. Ron continues to be in demand as an expert in adolescent and childhood obesity. He also works as a hospitalist and the program director for the Med/Peds Residency program at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and in his spare time he is working toward his black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

LEADER Julia Young Brubaker ’89, is a "stay-at-home" mom who is busy with volunteering at her three sons' schools and has recently launched a website for her new business: hand made photo note cards and enlargements of butterflies, flowers, snowy streets, and anything interesting found in nature. Dawn Nichols ’92, purchased another home about two miles away from her prior home in January of last year. Her husband Joe Shultz came up with a new kitchen and bathroom design, and they entered a four month renovation process. They moved the entire family on the first of June and spent six weeks unpacking and adjusting to a newborn (Eva), a new toddler (Emma) and a new home.

Dr. Ken Brown ’93, was selected as one of the “Forty Under Forty” list which honors the most influential people (under 40) in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor. He was honored for his work introducing new technology in the classroom, service learning projects for students, and work with local non-profit agencies. [Congratulations Dr. Ken on this well deserved honor!!] Dana Lowenstein Weinstein ’93, married fellow Maryland Alum, Ken Weinstein, and recently had a son -Nathaniel (Nate) Pierce Weinstein. Suzana Pereira ’95, with her family (husband Nuno, daughter Natalia who is 6, and son Danny who is 4) moved to a new home on the water in Edgewater over the summer. Jeffrey Smith ’95, has accepted a new position working within the administration of Mayor Sheila Dixon of the City of Baltimore. Jeff serves as the Executive Liaison for Public Policy with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development (MOED).

LEADER Randy Katz ’98, is a federal prosecutor in South Florida and enjoys being able to make a difference and working in public service. He was promoted to the Economic Crimes Section of the U.S. Attorney's Office, where he prosecutes securities fraud, health care fraud, wire fraud, computer fraud, and also prosecutes child exploitation cases and works with many child victims. Christina Maria Lagdameo ’98, was awarded the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award by the University of Maryland Alumni Association for distinguishing herself as a young graduate both personally and professionally.

David Marks ’95, continues to work in Washington, DC, on the staff of the National Mike ’91 and Rhonda Newton Smith ’92 & children Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study coast of South America; Cape Cod; Commission. Last year, David took weddings in Baltimore, New York, his family (Stephanie and son and Connecticut; the Shenandoah Nicholas) to Walt Disney World. Valley; and a trip to a Dominican retreat house deep in the Virginia woods!! But, he still found time to continue his work with the FBI, producing the Director’s interactive town hall meeting that was seen by 10,000 employees around the world. In April 2007, Ann started Collaboration Communication, a marketing and communication firm serving health care, public health, and social service clients. Ryan Spiegel ’00, married Rachael Golden on October 14, 2007. A huge wedding was a typical “Ryan Production.” Who else but Ryan would get married under a Chupah, in a Masonic Lodge, with a gospel choir performing, and serving a special drink called a “Ryan-Tini”, which was an “Extra Dirty Olive Martini”!!! Ryan also was elected to the City Council of Gaithersburg, Maryland, winning 56% of the vote!! [Congratulations to a former ODK President, a great person, a consummate politician, and a true leader.] [An historical note - Ryan’s great grandmother, the late Henrietta Spiegel, was initiated into ODK in 1989, and was the oldest graduate from the University of Maryland in its history!]

Adam Lilling ’00, is practicing law at Morrison & Foerster in McLean, Virginia and is engaged to be married to Catherine Hershey. Larry Long, Jr. ’00, has been working since September, 2007, as a Territory Manager for Medfusion, a medical practice industry. Kelly Newsome ’00, living in New York City, has expanded her corporate law practice into non-profit representation, which she really enjoys. Phil Barnes ’02, is in his 5th year as Director of Bands & Orchestras and Music Department Chairman at Rockville High School. In January, the RHS Marching Band was selected to represent Montgomery County in Governor Martin O'Malley's inaugural parade. In May he was named a Class Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars. Phil has been selected to conduct the Montgomery County Junior Honors Band in January 2009. Angela Andreae Tuell ’02, was recently married on August 11, 2007. She now lives with her new husband in Indianapolis, IN where she is the media relations manager for Crowe Chizek and Company LLC. Her husband, Brian Tuell, works for the federal government and was transferred from Tennessee to Indianapolis. Sara Zailskas ’02, switched to trade magazines after a couple years in newspapers as a copy editor. She is now an assistant managing editor for Reed Business Information in Oak Brook, Ill., and lives in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood.

Javits Fellowship to continue her graduate studies at Stanford University. Since graduation she was worked for Teach for America in the San Francisco Bay Area, and worked for non-profits in New York City and China. Danielle recently completed her first year of the Ph.D. program at Stanford and spent the summer working in South Africa. Deanna Bridge ’04, is working as a Physicians Assistant in a family practice office in Pennsylvania. She is involved in state society in a leadership position and mentors students. Patrick Grzanka ’04, reached ABD status in August 2007 and plans on graduating with his PhD in American Studies from the University of Maryland in May 2009. For the past year he has also served in several directorship capacities for the Honors Humanities Program at UMD. Becky Zonies ’04, traveled around the world (literally) as a Resident Director for Semester at Sea. She returned home to the University of Maryland and is now the Assistant Director of the College Park Scholars - Life Sciences Program. Trish has been working in news since she graduated from UMD in May of 2005. While she is not looking forward to leaving the sunny weather of the South behind, she can't wait to be back in the Northeast...and to make a few visits back to the University of Maryland as well. Sakisha Jackson ’06, is still working at PWC (IT audit), and is enjoying herself. She is in the process of applying to law school. Jeannette Lopez ’06, will be graduating from Cornell University in May of 2008 with her Master of Industrial and Labor Relations. She will be beginning her career as an Assistant Human Resources Manager for General Mills in Murfreesboro, TN. Jesse Fox ’07, moved to New York and is now running the booking department of a small music media firm, Organic Entertainment. Kurt Pfund ’07, spent his senior year on a Study Abroad adventure based in Tuebingen, Germany, which allowed him to explore new parts of Europe and the Middle East. Now, he is pursuing academic and spiritual adventures, beginning with an M.Div at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary outside of Boston. Alana Williams ’07, recently moved back to the area to take a position as an Army Contractor working in the Contracting Office of the Army Research and Development Lab. She is happy to be back in Maryland and look forward to participating in ODK Alumni Events!

Linda Clement, Vice President, continues to provide excellent leadership for the Division of Student Affairs at

Maryland. She and her husband Peter look for every opportunity possible to visit their daughter Kristen in New York City where she is establishing herself as a designer.

Brooke Supple is now Dr. Brooke Supple, and husband, Matt Supple has started down the same road, beginning the doctoral program in College Student Personnel last fall.

Marsha Guenzler-Stevens, Director of Activities, and Warren Kelley, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, have headed up an initiative to better serve veterans returning to campus following service to their country.

Dale Vander Wall, has officially assumed the Director of Operations position at the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language and is now responsible for the human resources, communication, and information management functions of the Center.
