After covering the Inchon invasion at the beginning of the
Korean War, Mr. Herman was named Far Eastern Bureau Manager in 1951. He reported the signing of the Korean armistice from Panmunjom, as well as the 1953 prisoner exchanges. In October of that year, he returned to theU.S. and •served as White HouseCorrespondent, aposthe held for two years.

ThereisnotmuchIcansayinregardtothe incredibleresponsewehavereceivedfromour alumni except --WOW! Our alumni now stretchtothefourcornersoftheworld.They rangefromFloridatoAlaskaandfromHawaii toMaine.Thereareveryfewplacesnowwhere our Sigma Circle alumnido not make adifference.Wearecertainthattheresponsetothis secondnewsletterwillbejustasimpressiveasit wastothefirst.
Lastfall,theSigmaCirclewasindeedbusy. WebeganwiththeFirstLookFairwhichgave the campus community a chance to discover the three hundred campusorganizationsin a festive,twodayoutdoorevent.Wecontinued tobalancethecircle'sactivitiesbyprovidinga tailgate party before the presentation of our forty-twonewlytappedmembersatthehome footballgameagainstNorth Carolina.
Withtheformationof"MarylandImages", a one day program for prospective students sponsored by the Admissions Office, a great numberofourcirclemembersareofferinga unique perspective of the university to high school seniors and their families. Truly, a rewardingexperience.
During our annual Pot Luck Dinner, we askedseveralofourODKfacultymembersto addressthetopic: "Lifeaftercollege--howto apply your leadership skills to the 'real' world."

This semester, which has only now moved intofullgear,beganwithour"WelcomeBack Brunch,"atwhichwesetgoalsfortherestof theyear.Inaddition,wehaveselected39new members, and we will be sending the largest contingency in the country to Birmingham, Alabama,fortheODKNationalConvention.
Also,forthefirsttime,wearepresentingthe "Top Ten Freshmen" and the "Sophomore LeaderoftheYear"AwardsattheThirdAnnualCampusAwardsBanquet.
And finally, there is our double header weekend of Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29. During this particular weekend we will help the University celebrate the 350th

WhenJohnBrooksSlaughtercametothe UniversityasitsnewChancellorinNovember of1982,hebroughtwithhimaplethoraof achievementsandhonorsthatrangedfrom "Who'sWhoinEngineering"to"Who's WhoinAmerica."
Atthattime,whatwasnotonhisvitawas "Member,OmicronDeltaKappa."That changedlastsemester.
Atlast,the50yearoldTopekaKansas nativeandoneofahandfulofBlackstoheada majorpublicuniversityhadbeenselectedinto oneofthefewhonorariesthateludedhis brilliantcareer.AndDr.Slaughterwasindeed honored.
Itwasagreathonortobeinductedinto ODK,"saystheChancellor."Iamveryproud ofODK'srolloncampusandpleasedtobe associatedwithsuchafinegroupofstudent leaders."
Sincetheageof14,Dr.Slaughterwantedto distinguishhimselfintheengineeringfield.In 1971heearnedhisPh.D.inEngineering SciencefromtheUniversityofSanDiego.Last October,hewasinductedintohishighschool's HallofFame,thefirstBlackandonlythe fourthpersontoreceivesuchanhonor.
Whatisevenmoreinterestingabouttheman ishowhecametobeinterestedinthejob. WhenDr.RobertGlucksternannouncedhe wouldbeleavingtheChancellor'spostitsent theUniversity'shierarchyscurryingforaformidablereplacement.Aftermuchtimeandlittleprogress,itwasbymereflukethatDr. Slaughterbecameacandidate.
WhilewaitingtospeaktotheMay1982 graduationclass,Dr.SlaughterwaschitchattingwithChairmanoftheBoardof Regents,JosephTydings.Tydingsasked
Slaughterwhathisplanswereforthefuture. Slaughtersaidsomedayhewouldwishtobe theheadofamajoruniversity.
Thatsomedaycamesixmonthslater.A luckybreakfortheUniversity,butDr. Slaughterconsidersitmutuallyso. "Itwasawonderfulopportunityforme,"he says."Itrepresentsanaturalculminationof mycareerasanengineerandanacademicadministrator.''
WhenhecametotheUniversity,Dr. SlaughterwasthedirectoroftheNational ScienceFoundation.Hewasfirstassociated withtheNSFin1977afterheservedthe UniveristyofWashingtonasdirectoroftheappliedphysicslaboratory.Hereturnedtherein 1979asacademicvicepresidentandwenttothe NSFonafull-timebasisin1980.
Dr.Slaughter'sresearchspecialtiesareinthe fieldsofelectricalengineeringandcomputer systems.Hewaselectedin1982intotheNationalAcademyofEngineeringandisa

WhatistoDr.Slaughter'sgreatcredit, however,isthetransitionthathehasmade withtheUniversity.Muchhasoccurredsince hehastakenofficeandthemediahasbeenattunedtoitall.Still,Dr.Slaughterhasn't falteredfromhisagendatowardexcellence withtheUniversity.
Inhisquestforexcellenceandimproved "qualityoflife"hefeelsthat"wemustopen ourdoorstocreateeducationalopportunities forawidevarietyofstudents,"asrecently statedinan"Ebony"article."Andwemust recognizethepotentialforexcellenceina diversestudentbody.Equalityandqualityare notmutuallyexclusive."
