UMD’S VIBRANT ARTS & CULTURE HUB It gives me great pride to present The Clarice’s 2018-19 performing arts season at the University of Maryland, full of creative and educational events inspired by amazing classical and historical works as well as some of the world’s most thought-provoking contemporary artists. This season guide shines light on the wide-ranging and diverse events audiences have come to love and expect from the university’s performing arts partners.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about any number of projects: the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies’ artistic collaboration in the Triumph of Isabella, which brings 400-yearold Dutch artwork to life through exhibition and festival (pg. 5); the School of Music’s Kurt Weill Festival: Road of Promise, an oratorio which partners student ensembles with alumni to artistically recount iconic stories from Jewish scripture (pg. 6); and the Artist Partner Program’s Grammy-nominated visiting artist and jazz saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (pg. 13).

Please spend time exploring the guide to see how these entertaining and expressive art forms represent diverse cultures that come to life intellectually and artistically through investigation, interpretation, experimentation and technological advances.

Now in its fifth year, NextNOW Fest is the university’s creative welcome and welcome back for students and an open invitation to our friends and community.

Faculty Artist Series: Woodwind Faculty Showcase School of Music faculty collaborate for an evening of chamber music

Tyshawn Sorey, percussion (USA) MacArthur Fellow and composer/drummer Tyshawn Sorey weaves classical composition and improvisation in this performance that seeks to blur boundaries between the two. The Speed of Sound Sessions are a celebration of musicians who support and promote composers whose work was created in the 21st century and who respond to the contemporary world in which we live.

Music and spirituality are ever-present in trumpeter Sean Jones, who is hailed for his “virtuosity, musicality, and sensitivity” (Chicago Tribune). Among his many accomplishments are his tenure with Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he began his relationship with mentor Wynton Marsalis. Jones also serves as Artistic Director of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra and Chair of Jazz Studies at the Peabody Conservatory.

UMD Wind Orchestra A leading voice among collegiate ensembles in premiering new works for winds, the 10th anniversary season of the University of Maryland Wind Orchestra led

TEMPO

The School of Music’s Kurt Weill Festival opens with The Road of Promise, a semi-staged oratorio featuring the combined forces of the UMD Symphony Orchestra, the Maryland Opera Studio, the UMD Concert Choir and SOM alumni. Adapted from the original 1937 work, The Road of Promise is set in an Israeli synagogue and recounts iconic stories from Jewish scripture. Biblical scenes unfold through music and are set in motion by the Rabbi, whose narrative role is similar to the Evangelist in the passions of J.S. Bach.

This graduate student-led contemporary music ensemble focuses on cultivating new music experiences in the community both within and outside of the standard concert hall. Presenting music so fresh that the ink is often literally wet on the pages, TEMPO collaborates with composers to present the music of now. Mark your calendar for the spring TEMPO concert April 15!

Fall MFA Thesis Concert Original, compelling works from MFA Dance candidates.

Christine Hands’ highly physical dance theater piece, Hamlet, posits our hero in a dystopian future, exploring the human experience.

These 18 players are among the nation’s acclaimed Black and Latino professional solo instrumentalists and chamber musicians. With an electrifying and haunting program, featuring works by Shostakovich, Cassadó and Syrian-American composer Kareem Roustom, these cultural ambassadors share the journey of various communities from around the world who seek peace, harmony and refuge from hardship due to conflict.

Stew explores James Baldwin’s legacy in this music and theater experience created with long-time collaborator and co-composer Heidi Rodewald and an all-star band. Borderline Sébastien Ramirez and Honji Wang’s expanded choreographic language explores the tension of physical forces and social boundaries that reflect the reality of being tethered together in complex communities. The Odyssey — From Vietnam to America The Vietnam War’s legacy lives on more than 40 years after its end. Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated composer-performer Vanessa Vân Ánh Võ melds traditional Vietnamese instruments with spoken word and live media to explore the deeply moving story of Vietnam’s war refugees: “Boat People.” In this multi-sensory experience, she triggers memories of the ocean carrying them from Vietnam to freedom.

36th Annual Choreographers’ Showcase (DC/MD/VA) The Choreographers’ Showcase has become one of the DC/MD/VA dance community’s most celebrated exhibitions of established and emerging choreographic talent.

Established in 1983 by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the Showcase’s featured choreographers now number in the hundreds, and they are teaching and making dance in local communities and on stages across the globe.

The New Work Reading is the premiere performance of the winning piece of the Third Annual UMD Opera Composition Contest. The UMD School of Music’s Maryland Opera Studio and The Clarice’s Artist Partner Program established the UMD Opera Composition Contest in 2016 as part of their ongoing dedication to cultivating and performing new work that addresses socially relevant themes.

Grammy-nominated jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer Ravi Coltrane has over the course of more than a 20-year career recorded noteworthy albums both as a leader and a sideman, and founded a prominent independent record label, RKM. Ravi is the son of John Coltrane and multi-instrumentalist, composer and spiritual leader Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, but has established himself as a jazz luminary in his own right.

Kurt Weill Festival: Zaubernacht and Mahagonny Songspiel The Maryland Opera Studio juxtaposes two of Weill’s earliest works for the stage — Zaubernacht (1922) and Mahagonny Songspiel (1927). Zaubernacht is an enchanting chamber music and dance work featuring a fantastical story about two small children whose toys come to life as they’re sleeping. Mahagonny Songspiel marks the beginning of Weill’s collaboration with Bertolt Brecht. In this “scenic cantata,” Weill sets Brecht’s poetry to music in a fictitious town in an American desert.

One. One & One is masterful dance that is as emotionally vulnerable as it is frank about the dissonance that we sometimes feel in a world of multiple personal, existential and spiritual possibilities. Noura Mint Seymali (MAURITANIA) Noura Mint Seymali’s quartet is built around a deliberate return to Moorish roots, led by the raw music of the azawan, an ensemble of traditional instruments in Moorish culture. The Left Bank Quartet presents the music of 20th- and 21st-century Polish composers, familiar and unknown. The program is balanced

by Beethoven’s masterful Great Fugue, a work whose revival was championed by Polish violin virtuoso Henryk Wieniawski.

Their name means “give/take” in old Ukrainian. Presenting fundamental elements of Ukrainian “ethnic chaos,” this quartet from Kiev bends genres with new music influenced by traditions from across the globe. DakhaBrakha’s dramatic show is filled with explosive harmonies and thrilling vocal effects.

While deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture, the band’s compositions are influenced by sounds from Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditions.

With a score that brilliantly combines elements of opera and musical theater, Kurt Weill’s Street Scene is recognized today as one of his masterworks. Set in a crowded tenement in New York City in the 1940s, the Maryland Opera Studio presents this opera portraying life among a diverse group of working-class immigrants and the climactic events of one sweltering summer day. Based on a story by Elmer Rice with lyrics by Langston Hughes, Street Scene addresses issues around social justice, race and relationships.

The Artist Partner Program encompasses the Visiting Artist Series, NextNOW Fest, National Orchestral Institute + Festival, NextLOOK partnership and the MilkBoy ArtHouse partnership.

Part of a major public research university, we are committed to providing opportunities for artists to develop new work that addresses the challenges and opportunities we face as a campus and community.

The Artist Partner Program curates multi-arts performances and festivals with artists and creative innovators from both around the corner and around the world. Dedicated to creating performance and learning opportunities for students and our community, this work also shines through in artist residencies, workshops, masterclasses, K-12 student matinees and artistic exchange. With a strong belief that artists can be catalysts for community change, leadership and empowerment, the Artist Partner Program extends the academic learning and cultural opportunities for UMD students, as well as enhances the artistic ecology of the community that surrounds and supports the university.

MILKBOY ARTHOUSE

A partnership with MilkBoy Philadelphia, MilkBoy ArtHouse is a local crossroads for dynamic entertainment, inspired social gathering and creative dining in downtown College Park. In addition to presenting select Visiting Artist Series performances at this restaurant and performance venue, we partner with campusand communitybased organizations and curators to present interactive, engaging and unconventional programming.

VISITING ARTIST SERIES serves as the cornerstone

of the Artist Partner Program. Each season this series brings regional, national and international artists to the UMD campus through six performance series: Dance, Theater, Chamber Music, Global Music, Jazz and the Speed of Sound Sessions, which champions the music of composers from the last 10 years. Beyond the stunning work these artists bring to the stage, they are also committed to extensive campus and community engagement creating exciting connections and opportunities for students and community.

MICHELLE SMITH PERFORMING ARTS LIBRARY

The Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL) at the University of Maryland is a lab of inspiration for faculty, staff, students and community. As the central home of music, theater and dance materials on campus, it also houses a variety of Special Collections in Performing Arts of the University of Maryland Libraries, preserving performance, education, recordings and scholarship.

MSPAL strives to re-imagine the library experience, coming to life through pop-up performances, plays, musical events and lectures. This season The Gallery at MSPAL will feature a new collaboration in partnership with the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies’ International Program for Creative Collaboration & Research. Art, technology and history come together in this exhibition featuring an adaptation of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s (London) Triumph of Isabella exhibit including a 1,244-foot painting and showcasing costumes and recreations from the famous work created by UMD design students.

The library is for everyone! Explore the archives, borrow a book, talk to an expert archivist or find retreat at one of the bestkept secrets on campus.

The School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) advances and transforms the research and practice of the performing arts through its commitment to excellence and innovative education. TDPS educates artist scholars to be active leaders, who influence and expand the practice and social impact of theater, dance and performance studies.

ENGAGEMENT: ON CAMPUS AND IN THE COMMUNITY

The performing arts at Maryland are committed to connecting to faculty, staff and students across the University of Maryland campus as well as members of the surrounding local community. Our campus and community engagement programs facilitate interactions with artists, scholars and community leaders that are focused on the creative process and research, rather than just product and performance. Strengthened by partnerships with campus and community entities, these engagement programs provide opportunities for our audiences and students to exchange ideas and actively participate with artists and, ultimately, connect the performing arts at Maryland to the larger campus and the local community.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

By creating opportunities that explore arts leadership, management and entrepreneurship, professional development programs are designed to equip artists and educators to be at the forefront of their fields. Programs like NextLOOK, in partnership with Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier, provide time, space and funding for artists to develop new work and receive audience feedback as part of the process. Masterclasses and guest teaching by visiting artists give students direct access to national and international touring artists, while Concerts in Close Quarters takes those artists to residence halls for intimate performances, followed by conversation.

ACCESS & PARTICIPATION

Through attendance, inquiry and sometimes even stepping on stage, we create performing arts-based activities for people of all ages to demystify the creative process and encourage curiosity. Students and local community members are invited to perform alongside professional touring artists, and our K-12 Student Matinee series gives school-aged children the chance to experience the performing arts while learning about what it takes backstage to put on a show, all for free.

Programming focused on the Latino/a communities near the campus include field trips to The Clarice, workshops taught by dance and theater students, after-school arts experiences and family art days with national and international visiting artists.

ARTS CITIZENSHIP

We are committed to bringing voice to issues of social change by viewing them through the lens of performing arts and creative response. Through public conversations like Do Good Dialogues and Opera Resonates, we facilitate collaboration between campus and community organizations focused on unity to co-curate events that bring people together. These programs make it possible for students to be responsive through creative expression to issues in the community and across campus that arise throughout the academic year.
