THIS MOMENT MATTERS

Welcome the stranger, feed the hungry, and care for the sick.

BECAUSE IT’S NOT

“WHO IS MY ENEMY?” BUT “WHO IS MY NEIGHBOR?”

As Christians, we face an urgent moral imperative to respond in love and compassion to the times in which we live—times marked by the greatest forced migration crisis since World War II. Times beleaguered by unchecked racism, sexism, and other systemic injustices; climate change; and increasing global inequity.

The United Methodist Church unwaveringly supports the inherent dignity of every human being. Called to action in “a time such as this,” we take courage in a God who bids us to not grow weary.

WHY THIS MOMENT MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER

Compassion, love, and welcome are longstanding values of the Christian tradition. And today, these gospel mandates matter more than ever.

Drawing from the fearless example of Queen Esther in the Old Testament, we believe that by God’s grace and prompting, we are being called right now to stand with our neighbors and to alleviate their suffering.

Make this moment matter. Respond in love now at giveumcmission.org/thismoment. Together, let us welcome the stranger, empower the next generation through education and job training, tend the sick, feed the hungry, and promote stability and peace for the suffering and displaced.

A Trusted Name in Disaster Response

In recent years, many millions around the globe have been devastated by severe weather-related disasters. Sadly, the most vulnerable often suffer the most acutely.

While UMCOR’s work addresses many key aspects of humanitarian need, disaster response is a hallmark of their mission. Thanks to people like you, UMCOR—a unit of Global Ministries—continues its legacy of providing life-giving financial assistance, training, and community collaboration to not only help people journey to self-sufficiency but also to empower their resilience when the next storm hits.

The time is now to respond in love and make this moment matter. Stand shoulder to shoulder with the marginalized and relieve their suffering by making a gift now at giveumcmission.org/thismoment.

Keep reading to learn more about five key areas of humanitarian need that demand our urgent response today: forced migration, food security and sustainable livelihoods, education, healthcare, and peace and stability.

1 FORCED MIGRATION

More people are forcibly on the move today than at any other time in history, fleeing acute poverty, war and civil conflict, and natural and humanmade disaster. U.S. governmental policies that fail to recognize the plight of people fleeing violence and persecution run counter to the inherent dignity of every person. We remain committed to providing refuge and offering support to people seeking safety and abundant life, and we celebrate the ways immigrants enhance our communities by driving growth and innovation.

Your Compassion Relieves Suffering

FOOD SECURITY AND SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

2

Feeding the hungry is a clear biblical imperative (Isaiah 58:8, Matthew 25:31-46). John Wesley, Methodism’s founder, emphasized the importance of living simply in order to help others and donated most of his income. We work with partners to improve farming and agricultural methods, increase crop yields, and boost nutrition—efforts more important now than ever given the elimination of USAID’s once key investment in the World Food Program. Similarly, we empower people for long-term success through entrepreneurial coaching and jobs training.

Your Generosity Saves Lives

As we work to alleviate hunger and malnutrition and train people for income-generating futures, you can improve people’s access to life-saving nutrition and sustainable livelihoods. To learn more about initiatives in these key areas visit giveumcmission.org/thismoment today.

For John Wesley, education is a conduit of God’s perfect grace and an essential component of human flourishing. For over 150 years, Methodists have prioritized educating leaders for the church and the world through the Board of Education, now the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Recent efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education undermine fundamental principles of justice and opportunity, disproportionately harming students from marginalized communities. Building on Methodism’s historic educational advocacy efforts, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking cycles of poverty and systemic inequity by continuing to work for educational fairness and opportunity and to empower the next generation of transformational leaders.

Your Faithfulness Advances Justice

As we continue advancing educational opportunities for all, you can help bridge the widening gap for communities struggling under slashed budgets and train today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders. Visit giveumcmission.org/thismoment today for updates on this essential component of human flourishing.

3 EDUCATION

4 HEALTHCARE

John Wesley took the health of the body seriously and worked to remedy the connection between poverty and poor health. But unfortunately, for millions of people today, even a minor injury or illness can be a death sentence without access to proper care. This tragic reality is now further compounded by the recent dismantling of USAID, which has catastrophically crippled global healthcare efforts. As a result, we are working harder than ever to provide accessible healthcare through our reliable network of health boards, hospitals, clinics, and volunteers.

Your Empathy Improves Lives

As we continue to improve the accessibility of healthcare for all, help connect marginalized communities to life-giving and life-saving resources. PEACE AND STABILITY

Corners of our world are under siege. While forced migration and the lack of accessible food, sustainable livelihoods, education, and healthcare all contribute to instability, there are places like Gaza, D.R. Congo, Ukraine, and Sudan experiencing devastating and ongoing bombardment and warfare. And once again, the dramatic reduction to U.S. foreign aid is exacerbating the suffering of people in these regions—evaporating, for example, U.S. humanitarian aid to Ukraine. In response, we will expand our efforts to assist Ukrainians and continue to support the people of D.R. Congo and Gaza and its surrounding areas.

Your Good Will Helps Heal

As we keep working to combat violence and instability in areas of global conflict, help keep humanitarian aid flowing to survivors. Visit giveumcmission.org/thismoment today for more information about what survivors in high-conflict areas need most.

“Let’s not get tired of doing good, because in time we’ll have a harvest if we don’t give up.”

– Galatians 6:9 (CEB)

In spite of these challenges, we must not tire of doing good. Because together, UMCOR and Global Ministries have been serving as a global voice of conscience for more than 200 years.

Founded in 1940 in response to the needs of millions displaced by World War II, UMCOR joined Global Ministries’ now 200-yearold legacy of responding to the unprecedented humanitarian needs of our neighbors around the globe.
