TOGETHER IT'S POSSIBLE

A TRIBUTE TO THE POWER OF OUR DONOR COMMUNITY

2022 Donor Report

Thank You

Dear Friends of UMass Memorial Health,

A hospital system is only as strong as the people and the community that support it. We are grateful and proud to report that your continued commitment to UMass Memorial Health has allowed us to thrive as a vibrant and innovative healthcare provider to the Central Massachusetts community.

As we enter another year, it’s clear that COVID-19 will be with us in some form as we navigate the days and weeks ahead. As you know, this continues to have a great impact on patients, staff and the healthcare community in general. We are ever thankful to all those who face this challenge with continued endurance, spirit and compassion.

As you’ll see from the pages that follow, your generosity is making a true difference in the lives of those in need, enabling us to create and sustain tangible programs, services and innovations that impact the quality of life for children and adults. These are just a few examples of how, with your help, we are able to elevate the level of clinical excellence that saves and improves human life while never forgetting the importance of looking into the eyes of our patients and letting them know that we are here to help, to heal and to never let them feel alone.

Time and time again, day in and day out, your partnership with us demonstrates that together, anything is possible.

Thank you.

Robots

can do amazing things. This one makes hospitalized children smile.

Thanks to generous donors like you, UMass Memorial Medical CenterChildren's Medical Center is the first children’s hospital on the East Coast to use Robin the Robot. Standing 47 inches tall, Robin uses artificial intelligence to connect with kids for fun, comfort and medical education. Robin interacts in multiple languages and is available daily to support kids.

“Hospitalization can be stressful and even frightening for children. It’s no secret that our patients have suffered more in recent years due to increased isolation. Robin is a unique way to address separation and connect with kids.”

“We are doing what we can to help every member of our Central Massachusetts community access competent and compassionate health care in their greatest hour of need.”

This Bank Made a Life-Changing Investment

Many thanks to Rollstone Bank & Trust for a gift to help expand palliative and complementary care resources for patients with cancer at HealthAllianceClinton Hospital’s Wellness Center. This increases access to cancer prevention and care for the most vulnerable and medically under-served populations.

Completed in 2021, the Wellness Center is a 14,000-square-foot facility created to offer innovative, complementary cancer care for the “whole patient.” Currently offering physical therapy, financial counseling and mammography services, the program plans to expand to include counseling, case management, support groups, massage therapy, acupuncture and yoga during 2023. These programs enhance the quality of life, improve health outcomes, and reduce side effects for patients living with cancer.

Imagine the Most Advanced Baby Monitor You Could Ever Envision

Every day, Children’s Medical Center (CMC) caregivers are treating dozens of patients in its Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. Since 2014, the center has used a video camera system that enables family members to see their loved one when they can’t be there. Video monitoring reduces anxiety and brings great comfort in times of work, illness, and COVID-19 restrictions.

As this technology has advanced, the CMC is now upgrading to the new AngelEye system, allowing families to talk, read, and sing to their child remotely. Clinicians can send secure messages to parents and guardians, and the unit offers access to a library of educational videos.

Special thanks to Erla and Kevin Mallett, longtime donors to the CMC and Marlborough Hospital, who made a very generous donation to help purchase these AngelEye units.

“Having a newborn or a child in the hospital can be incredibly stressful. We hope that our random act of kindness provides peace of mind to all those parents, grandparents, and siblings who are missing their newest family member.”

Together, We Are Caring For Your Caregivers

Lifting those who uplift us

For almost three years, our caregivers have been at the frontlines of fighting the battle against COVID-19, working long hours caring for sick patients who were often isolated from family and friends. As we slowly emerge from the pandemic, our caregivers continue to face new challenges that keep our hospitals at full capacity.

Our All Hands on Deck – Caring for the Caregiver campaign recognizes their dedication and sacrifice and shows these selfless individuals that they are appreciated by the community. Because of all of you who contributed to this campaign, we were able to provide morale-boosting activities including start-ofshift coffee and donuts, baseball game tickets, team building activities, raffles and family activities culminating with Family Fun Day at Polar Park.

Considering the immense challenges from an ongoing pandemic, patients with greater need than ever before, capacity issues and more, we feel incredibly grateful to live in a community that supports its health care workers. With your generosity, we can continue to bolster the people who take care of us every day.

“Thank you so much for creating and organizing the Family Fun Day at Polar Park! My kids and I had SO much fun! My son loved the batting cages, my daughter loved doing cartwheels on the field, and I won a raffle! We hope this is an annual event."

A Profession and a Purpose: Advancing Nursing Careers

Recruiting and retaining the best nurses is a priority at UMass Memorial Health. That’s why we are so grateful for donors like the family of the late Rachel Couillard. By establishing the Rachel Couillard Nursing Scholarship Fund, the family created a legacy that honors their mother and grandmother and supports nurses.

In 1927, Rachel Couillard graduated from Memorial Hospital Training School for Nursing. She worked at Memorial Hospital for six years before leaving the profession for marriage and family. Said one family member, “She always respected the nursing profession and would love that a future generation was receiving nursing scholarships in her name.”

The Rachel Couillard Nursing Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for UMass Memorial Health patient care attendants and licensed practical nurses to obtain training to become registered nurses.

“By reducing the cost barriers of nursing education, funds like these allow UMMH to develop a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Thoughtful gifts like the Rachel Couillard Nursing Fund are an investment in our caregivers and in the future of the nursing profession at UMMH.”

Innovative Training Sets a New Standard

To address the nationwide shortage of health care workers, HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital (HAC) is leveraging a generous grant from the Hahnemann Trust Foundation to support its efforts in workforce development.

This grant has equipped a new Simulation Center on the Leominster campus, providing the opportunity to practice critical thinking, clinical decision-making and psychomotor skills on patient simulator mannequins in a safe, controlled environment, without potential risk to actual patients. It is a highly efficient and cost-effective means of both individual and team training, and has been shown to enhance patient safety and optimize outcomes.

In addition, a portion of the grant will allow HAC to establish a Professional Development Training Fund which will bring subject matter experts to offer courses in the Simulation Center. The offering of free, on-site certification is a vehicle for HAC to differentiate itself from competitors in the hiring process while aiding in the retention of our current workforce to provide the best care for our community.

“We planted 2,290 flags outside the Medical Center to mark the deaths of the people we lost in Massachusetts to opioid overdose in 2021.”

Together, We Are Building a Healthier Community

The Kraft Family kindly brings us a different kind of victory

A cutting-edge asset to our local community, The Kraft Community Care in Reach® mobile clinic will allow our caregivers working in addiction services to meet patients where they are in the community in shelters, encampments and food pantries. The program offers free, private and accessible care to patients who might not otherwise seek health care.

The Kraft Community Care in Reach® mobile clinic was made possible through the generosity of the Kraft Family Foundation, The Kraft Center for Community Health and our shared commitment to serve the people of Central Massachusetts, especially our most vulnerable populations.

3,000+ Encounters 900+ Individuals

Care provided by our street team May 2021 – December 2022

“We feel a special commitment to this town. Part of the responsibility of people who have been fortunate is to make sure everyone has access to good health care.”

Community Care in Reach® is a mobile health initiative with other mobile clinics in Boston, Brockton and Western Massachusetts.

Through the Road to Care Mobile Addiction Service, the team has provided life-saving Suboxone treatment and Narcan distribution to patients from the most underserved and vulnerable populations. The team has also addressed issues like infections, diabetes and other chronic illnesses, hepatitis and HIV, in addition to injuries, prenatal care and mental illness.

The First Ridesharing Service of its Kind Thanks to CVS Health

Lack of transportation is often a main barrier to care. Children whose families lack transportation access are less likely to receive preventive care and more likely to miss medical appointments, contributing to poor health and avoidable hospitalizations. Thanks to a grant from CVS Health, we are piloting a rideshare transportation program to provide families access to transportation to and from their medical appointments at no cost.

CVS Health funded our pilot project to demonstrate the effectiveness of a rideshare transportation intervention in improving access to care for pediatric patients. Funding will be used to support patient screening, scheduling rides, ride costs and evaluation of the program.

This will be the first ridesharing service in Central Massachusetts offered by a healthcare system.

The UMass Memorial Medical CenterChildren’s Medical Center serves more than 68,000 children from Worcester and surrounding communities. A majority of our pediatric patients come from low-income households.

Among All Our New Ideas This One is the Freshest

Because of your donations, the Food is Medicine program recently expanded to the UMass Memorial Medical Center - Children’s Medical Center and to HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital (HAC) Fitchburg Campus with its Food Rx FARMacy program.

Your support helped launch food programs including the Fresh Connect pilot, currently underway at the Cancer Center and the Children’s Medical Center, which gives Fresh Connect debit cards to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. The first cohort of cancer patients have completed their initial 6-month program, with some expressing a strong desire to continue, stating that the program was “hugely beneficial” in increasing their access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

At HAC, patients with food insecurity are given tokens to purchase produce from Growing Place’s fresh mobile food market, as well as working with Growing Places to register for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and home delivery of fresh food. Our community garden, planted in 2021, continues to grow healthy produce seasonally for a patient food pantry.

And the Food is Medicine cookbook gives patients easy recipes for cooking and preparing fresh produce. We continue to reach out to eligible patients to encourage participation in the program, and we are planning to expand the program into new locations and clinical areas.

Overall Food Is Medicine results to date:

275 eligible patients have been approached about the program

27% have elected to participate

Together, We Are Investing in the Future

Creating a legacy, creating an impact

Endowments at UMass Memorial Medical Center have a powerful and lasting impact, ensuring continuation of top-level care and expertise which defines the entire organization. A very special endowment, the Bob Quinlan Breast Center Endowment Fund, will now support the newly-named Bob M. Quinlan, MD Breast Center at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

A heartfelt effort from Dr. Quinlan’s friends, family, former patients and colleagues made this possible as they created a lasting tribute to his 35 years at UMass Memorial Medical Center, including his roles as chief of Surgical Oncology and director of the Comprehensive Breast Center. Equally important, Dr. Quinlan was a beloved leader, mentor, teacher and colleague. Patients said that while Dr. Quinlan cured their breast cancer, he also took care of them. When Dr. Quinlan retired from surgery, he took on a new role as the first patient experience officer at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

The Quinlan Endowment will provide perpetual income to support patient needs at the Quinlan Breast Center. It will directly impact breast cancer treatment now and in the future and will serve as a fitting tribute to Dr. Quinlan, ensuring that care inspired by his special expertise and empathy continues in perpetuity.

We thank the supporters of this endowment and all endowments, whose vital contributions will be felt by generations to come.

“Bob Quinlan was an exemplary surgeon, bringing expertise and compassion to his breast cancer patients while inspiring his colleagues to strive for the best treatment possible in serving the countless women impacted by this disease.”

A Gift to the Future

With a selfless commitment to the future of UMass Memorial Health, these individuals demonstrate the true spirit of generosity and make a real and lasting impact on the health and well-being of the community we serve.

A gift to UMass Memorial Health from your estate is an investment in the future health of Central Massachusetts. We have resources which can help you make a planned gift from your estate to benefit UMMH or one of its member hospitals. For further information, please contact us at 774-443-GIVE or give@umassmemorial.org.

David Grenon

A Worcester native and retired business leader, David Grenon and his late wife Rosalie have a long track record of providing generous support to many local charities. When Dave named UMass Memorial Health in his estate plan, he did so with the intention of securing the future of healthcare in the region and to honor Rosalie.

“I am happy to support UMMH and its mission to provide the best health care for everyone in Central Massachusetts. My family has always received outstanding care from the physicians and caregivers, and through this gift, our family seeks to ensure that UMass Memorial is able to provide everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, access to this same level of care.”

Jon and Mary Ann Shakour

“In making our modest gift to UMMH, we would like to thank, not only the current staff of the hospital, but their predecessors from Memorial Hospital for the incredible caring of our families over the past ninety years! We could not have made it without you both - and humbly, we thank you all!”

- Jon and Mary Ann Shakour & Families

Zach Zaborny

Zach was born at UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC) 14 weeks early and spent his first six months in our NICU. This fall, 32 years later, he returned to the NICU to say “thank you” to the caregivers who took care of him when he was born, and to announce a planned gift to UMMMC through his estate plan.

“I believe that UMMMC saved my life when I was a baby, and I am happy to show my gratitude by including the hospital in my will.”

- Zach Zaborny
