THE FUTURE BEGINS HERE

WITH GRATITUDE TO OUR DONOR COMMUNITY

2023 Donor Report

“THE

FUTURE DEPENDS ON

WHAT WE DO IN THE PRESENT.”

Dear Friends,

Once again, as we reflecton another year at UMass Memorial Health, we are incredibly grateful for the many powerful ways that you have helped us bring care and compassion to our community. As we look ahead, we are genuinely excited about the robust future of this incredibly important health care system as we implement real and tangible changes that will impact so many people in need.

Thanks to you, we are accelerating many initiatives and projects that will help advance care for so many. More than just ideas on paper or thoughts from a meeting, these are advancements bringing new care models such as Mobile Integrated Health to more communities, building stronger career paths for our workforce and providing enhanced care where needed, for those we serve in Central Massachusetts.

Without a doubt, none of this would be possible without the partnership and support of our generous donors. Because of you, we are reaching underserved children, adults and families to make sure that they receive the care they deserve. With your help, we will keep building our presence and outreach as we change the status quo and impact humanity to the best of our ability.

Thank you.

UMass Memorial Health

UMass

Hospital care can sometimes feel intimidating or overwhelming, adding undue stress at a time when the focus should be on healing. Thanks to the generosity of our donor community, we’ve been able to think creatively and expand our mobile health initiatives, improving the patient care experience and adding comfort and convenience to where it’s needed most.

THE FUTURE OF PATIENT THE FUTURE OF PATIENT EXPERIENCE

Yes, Doctors Do Make House Calls

The future of healthcare will see more patients safely receiving care at home. With Mobile Integrated Health, we provide outstanding acute, on-demand care to patients at home using highly skilled community paramedics, novel telehealth technology, portable diagnostics, and remote monitoring. Visits are made within two hours of a request, with most occurring within 30 minutes. Over 90% of Mobile Integrated Health patients can recover at home without requiring a follow-up emergency department visit in the next 72 hours. Thanks to The Francis A. and Jacquelyn H. Harrington Foundation and other generous donors this program continues to expand.

EXPERIENCE

Hospital at Home

Hospital at Home provides high-quality, hospital-level care to patients in the comfort of their own home. Clinicians make home visits several times a day, and telehealth technology transmits 24/7 vital information to the patient’s provider team. Studies show that Hospital at Home programs improve patient outcomes and increase patient satisfaction. Our Hospital at Home program has served over 1,500 patients since launching two years ago and is available in 30 communities. We are grateful to many generous donors for their support that helped make this program possible.

Elevating Critical Care

Thanks to the Fels Family Foundation, Harrington Hospital’s new ultra-modern intensive care unit expansion will increase critical care capacity, improve outcomes, provide the best patient and family experience and better utilize the advanced clinical resources of the UMass Memorial Health system. The expansion will increase capacity from six private rooms to eight, and double the size of each room. Each new room will accommodate one or two visitors and even allow a loved one to stay overnight.

“There’s been so much research about the value of family, physical touch, and improved outcomes with the full involvement of a patient’s care team."

The updated seven room intermediate step-down unit, adjoining the new ICU, will allow improved continuity of care as patients improve and are moved from the ICU.

Our commitment to building a healthier future begins with ensuring the health of children today. Pediatric care at the UMass Memorial Medical Center –Children’s Medical Center (CMC) supports the whole child physically, mentally and emotionally from the youngest patients in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to adolescents and young adults.

THE FUTURE OF HEALTHIER

A Focus on Foster Care

Thanks to the support from the Remillard Family Foundation, Charles F. and Beatrice D. Adams Charitable Trust and DCU for Kids, in 2024 the FaCES (Foster Children Evaluation Services) clinic will expand primary care, psychiatric services and occupational therapy for children in foster care homes throughout the region. In 2023, we completed over 700 medical visits for kids entering care and expanded our coaching support services to foster parents/caregivers. These caregivers are the most important support for these children, and we provided 230 of them with in-home peer support and group classes in over 375 sessions. Lastly, we were able to specifically address the educational needs of 43 foster children.

CHILDREN

CHILDREN

The Marianne Felice, MD Endowment for Adolescent Medicine

To celebrate her outstanding contributions to the fields of peditrics and health care administration, we established The Marianne Felice, MD Endowment for Adolescent Medicine—the firt major endowment for the Children's Medical Center (CMC). The clinical excellence and leadership that Dr. Felice established continues as we care for over 15,000 adolescents and young adults every year. This endowment will assist us in becoming a national leader in adolescent medicine, addressing needs such as eating disorders, behavioral health, and the transition from childhood to adulthood. This recognition is a fitting tribue to all her years of service to the CMC and UMass Memorial Health.

Bedside Care for Newborns

Thanks to the generosity of Barbara “Babs” Donahue, fie new compact workstations in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will allow the medical team to move seamlessly from bedside to bedside. These important additions to the NICU will improve bedside engagement with families by making this process not only more effective, but more welcoming. These workstations enable more and easier interactions with each family, creating a better and less intimidating way to discuss the baby’s health status, treatment, and care plan.

Thank you, Babs, for your incredible generosity for this gift and so many others over the years to help our tiniest patients in the NICU.

Bringing Joy to Children

You’ve probably heard that America Runs on Dunkin’. Well, we’re proud to say that our Children’s Medical Center runs on Dunkin’, too. Here are just some of the recent gifts from Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation that have made our kids smile and helped achieve better outcomes for pediatric patients:

X Marks the Spot

This “Connecting Joy” grant allowed Child Life at the Children’s Medical Center to upgrade Xbox gaming consoles. Along with the needed distraction from a hospital setting, this gives the kids an outlet to work on cognitive skills as they gain a sense of mastery and control.

A Kid’s Best Friend

As one of 43 in-resident facility dogs funded by Dunkin’ Joy In Childhood across the nation, Valentina, our canine caregiver, received significant support though the “Dogs for Joy” grant program. Research shows that animal-assisted therapy can lower stress and anxiety levels, decrease blood pressure, increase patient mobility, and reduce pain perception.

Hello, Googly Eyes

Thanks to support from Dunkin’ Iced Coffee Day, Robin the Robot, with her googly eyes and cheery personality, is putting our kids at ease. This human-assisted artificial inelligence-based companion eases anxiety and loneliness among hospitalized children. Like a reallife Pixar character, Robin recognizes children’s emotions, responds based on stored memory, and explains medical procedures in childfriendly ways.

New Waiting Space for Children with Behavioral Health Needs

Nearly 20 years ago Dorothy “Dottie” Lurier, and her late husband, Howard, made a generous gift to the Emergency Care campaign, helping renovate the Emergency Department while creating a dedicated Pediatrics emergency care space.

Fast-forward 20 years, and we suddenly had the challenges of a global pandemic, the isolation that led to increases in behavioral health needs, and the ever-increasing social media impact on the mental health of our youngest patients. To meet these new challenges, Dottie once again offered her generosity, funding renovations that provide pediatric behavioral health patients and their families and guardians with a dedicated quiet, private space to await treatment.

UMass Memorial Health not only operates within the confines of its hospitals but also xtends its reach beyond those hallways to connect with individuals within their communities, meeting them at their points of need. This contributes to the general wellbeing of the community by bringing a greater focus to issues including safety, mental health, preventive care, substance abuse and homelessness.

COMMUNITY C THE FUTURE OF A VIBRANT

The Road to Child Safety

Safety Quest, an innovative mobile classroom, is now educating school children throughout central Massachusetts thanks to a partnership with Fundación MAPFRE. Our goal is to prevent the leading cause of childhood death: injuries that occur in the home and outside in neighborhoods.

“ We are proud of our partnership with UMass Memorial Medical Center - Children’s Medical Center. The Safety Quest program provides a unique and exciting safety education experience. Using the appeal of video games, these children are learning to be more aware of their environment and make choices that will help them remain safe.”

COMMUNITY

Fuller Foundation Offers New Hope

The George F. and Sybil H. Fuller Foundation funded a pilot program for the UMass Memorial Health Diabetes Center of Excellence, focusing on young adults ages 18-26 who may be less attentive to their diabetes care. Patients meet monthly to identify and address clinical, psychological or socioeconomic barriers to care.

Removing Barriers to Care

Bank of America, with its support of the Road to Care mobile clinic, is helping adults experiencing housing instability receive vital care. The Worcester Public Library recently experienced an influx of individuals seeking sheler in the library during the day. Noting that these individuals also had medical needs, the library’s social services liaison reached out to UMass Memorial Medical Center for help. Support from Bank of America allowed UMMMC’s Road to Care mobile clinic to offer a weekly clinic for these individuals at the Worcester Public Library. With services covering common medical illnesses, mental illnesses and substance use disorders, this initiative overcomes typical barriers to receiving care and reaches those who are truly in need.

Every patient appreciates a great caregiver—the individual who cared for you during a hospital stay and stayed by your side to help you heal. We are honored to have these caregivers among us, and with the generosity of our donors, we are able to help caregivers build their future here as they fulfil career goals and advance their skills.

WORKFORCE THE FUTURE OF OUR

Inspired Care from Inspiring People

A former day care teacher whose experience saving a toddler from choking led to a career in nursing. A former nursing home caregiver who stabilized a patient during a blizzard and is now studying to become a Registered Nurse. A patient care assistant who helped a patient with Parkinson’s Disease regain her mobility, and another who helped a patient with a neurological disorder regain her dignity—both now studying to become nurses. These are the inaugural Couillard Scholars, receiving tuition support for nursing studies through the generosity of a donor family in honor of their mother/grandmother who began her nursing career at Memorial Hospital.

A Key Player on the Surgical Team

Surgical Technologists play a vital role in the operating room: they support surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses and other surgical personnel. Thanks to support from donors, our caregivers can now pursue training as Surgical Technologists through the Frontline Scholars Program. Offered in partnership with Lasell University, this course of study allows caregivers to become certified o fill this high-demand position t UMass Memorial Health.

Advancing Our Workforce, Advancing Care

We are grateful to the many donors who support workforce development at UMass Memorial Health. These programs not only advance the careers of our caregivers, but ultimately lead to better patient care by supporting a better trained, more highly skilled workforce. We are continually strengthening our workforce with initiatives such as the Medical Assistant Registered Apprenticeship Program, training caregivers to become Certified Medical Asistants. In addition, the generous support of Richard Caparso is providing the pathway for pharmacy careers, and the George R. Wallace Foundation is supporting professional development in the areas of trauma, behavioral health and nursing.

They are selfles, they are dedicated, and they are without a doubt crucial to the success of UMass Memorial Health. Our volunteers mean the world to us, advancing our mission with the mantra of Get Creative. Have Fun. Do Good. Across the organization, you’ll fin them out in front and behind the scenes, supporting our programs and participating in the Rodman Ride for Kids, Derby for Drew, golf tournaments, and many more. We are grateful for their spirit and kindness.

THE FUTURE OF OUR

Tiny Footprints, Huge Impact

Celebrating the tiniest miracles and those who’ve left imprints on our hearts, the annual Tiny Footprints 5K unites families and caregivers from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to support one another, cheer on the graduates, remember infants who left this world too soon, and ensure the continued success of the NICU. This is one of the longest standing community fundraising events along with Links to the Future and Derby for Drew.
