COMMONWEALTH HONORS COLLEGE DISTINCTIONS Commonwealth Honors College recognizes the members of the class of 2023 for their progress toward completing the Honors curriculum and graduating with honors distinction. The Honors curriculum includes two components: first, General Studies—a course of study that encourages students to develop broad perspectives, and, later, Advanced Scholarship—advanced work that engages students in research and deep analysis. Honors students may complete only the first portion, only the second portion, or the full curriculum.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY HONORS Students awarded Multidisciplinary Honors undertake advanced research by completing four additional Honors courses, including an Honors thesis or project that is either outside of their declared major or that integrates two or more disciplines.

COMMONWEALTH HONORS COLLEGE SCHOLAR Students are awarded the distinction of Commonwealth Honors College Scholar (CHC Scholar) for successful completion of both the General Studies and advanced research portions of the curriculum.

GENERAL STUDIES HONORS Students awarded General Studies Honors complete five Honors courses designed to aid them in building the skills and knowledge to grapple with both the timeless issues of humanity and the current dilemmas facing our culture. Students earning General Studies Honors typically complete these Honors courses during their first two years and continue to meet university- and major-related requirements with high academic achievement. General Studies Honors is available to students who started in 2018 or earlier.

Anonymous Alumna Scholarship for Honors Students An anonymous sociology alumna from the class of 1954 created this one-time award for Honors students studying sociology and/or participating in community service learning through her estate. Having received a scholarship for her own studies, she was driven by an “urgent desire to help,” as she was once helped and in the hope of fostering a more just and equitable world.

Stevenson Diverse Healthcare Scholars Award Established by two graduates of UMass Amherst, this scholarship is designed to provide access for a Commonwealth Honors College student who plans to pursue a career in healthcare fields such as pharmacology, medical research, dentistry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or mental health. Tina BrownStevenson serves as a member of the Commonwealth Honors College Advisory Board.

Class of 1941 Humanitarian Award The Class of 1941 Humanitarian Award was endowed in 1991, on the occasion of the class’s 50th reunion, for Commonwealth Honors College students who share their commitment to world peace and furthering human progress. Award recipients are selected among junior and senior Honors College students who demonstrate academic excellence, document their community service, and submit an essay that recognizes the need for service beyond one’s self.

Cullen ’76 Scholarship Having served many years on the Commonwealth Honors College Advisory Board, alumna Nancy Cullen established this scholarship to encourage and reward the dedication and commitment necessary to be both a Commonwealth Honors College student and participant in the UMass Minuteman Marching Band. The scholarship is awarded annually to an Honors student who demonstrates outstanding scholarship while being an active participant in the marching band.

Evans Family Scholarship for Environmental Conservation Alumna Wendy Evans and her husband, Morris Evans, through the Richard and Rebecca Evans Foundation, established the Evans Family Scholarship for Environmental Conservation. This scholarship recognizes a Commonwealth Honors College student’s exemplary work on any aspect of the environment that is completed as part of that student’s studies, and encourages exploration of our environment on an academic level.

Frank and Helen DiGiammarino Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established by members of the DiGiammarino family, many of whom are UMass alumni, as a way to honor their parents, Frank and Helen DiGiammarino, for their commitment to academics and community service. Peter DiGiammarino serves on the Commonwealth Honors College Advisory Board.

This scholarship offers Commonwealth Honors College students the opportunity to participate in a new or ongoing community service or a community engaged research project during the summer.

Lang Global Scholars Award This award was established by donations from former and current students, colleagues, and friends of Professor Timothy Lang in honor of his retirement from UMass Amherst. The Lang Global Scholars Award supports students enrolled in the International Scholars Program who will be studying abroad in the next academic year. Professor Lang was the longtime director of Commonwealth Honors College’s International Scholars Program.

Lombardi and his wife, Cathryn, this scholarship provides renewable financial assistance to incoming Commonwealth Honors College students with interests in academic research and community service.

Marybeth T. Murphy Memorial Scholarship This award was established in memory of Marybeth T. Murphy, a 1983 graduate who studied landscape architecture with a major in environmental design.

This scholarship serves as a tribute to her and her commitment to public art. Friends and family established this scholarship to support Commonwealth Honors College students pursuing landscape architecture who share Marybeth's ideals.

Kenneth L. O’Brien Scholarship Established by UMass Amherst alumnus Peter Bloom in honor of his cross-country and track coach, Kenneth L. O’Brien, this renewable scholarship is awarded to students with outstanding academic records who are also dedicated to endurance activities. Mr. Bloom has served as chair of the Commonwealth Honors College Advisory Board.

Oxford Summer Seminar at Trinity College Scholarship This scholarship was established to provide travel scholarships to Commonwealth Honors College students who have been accepted to the Oxford Summer Seminar held annually at Trinity College, Oxford University.

Selection is based on a combination of financial need and academic merit.

Lawrence Payne ’77 Public Service Scholarship Endowed by the class of 1977, this award commemorates Lawrence Payne, a classmate who graduated with Departmental Honors in political science. Lawrence Payne was serving as special assistant for U.S. and Foreign Commercial Services when he died in an April 3, 1996, plane crash in Croatia with Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown. The award recognizes a senior Commonwealth Honors College student who has demonstrated a strong record of public service.

Howard H. Quint Memorial Prize in Honors This award is endowed in memory of the founder of the Honors Program who also served as chair of the history department. Recipients are selected jointly by the Department of History and Commonwealth Honors College.

International Scholars Program Founded and administered through the International Programs Office and Commonwealth Honors College, the International Scholars Program provides a vehicle for students who wish to focus on international study over an extended period of time. It is intended to enhance international study and provide an academic and cultural context for students’ experiences abroad. The program’s curriculum consists of two preparatory courses in the sophomore year, study abroad in the junior year, and a senior cross-cultural re-entry seminar. Recipients of Presidential Scholarships

William M. Bulger Presidential Scholarship This scholarship was established in honor of the former president of the UMass System to provide recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding student on the basis of both merit and need. Eligible applicants must be firstyears, sophomores, or juniors enrolled full time at a UMass campus, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.25. They must also be residents of Massachusetts. This scholarship is open to all majors and is renewable for up to three years.

Grace K. Fey Scholarship This scholarship was established in honor of the former chair of the UMass Board of Trustees to provide recognition and financial assistance to an outstanding student on the basis of both merit and need. Eligible applicants must be full-time sophomores at a UMass campus, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5. They must also be residents of Massachusetts. This scholarship is open to all majors, with preference given to mathematics, sciences, and nursing.

James J. Karam Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2013 by James J. Karam. Mr. Karam is chairman and founder of First Bristol Corporation, a regional real estate firm. His current and past professional and civic affiliations are extensive. He is on the board of directors of the largest community forprofit health care system in New England, Steward Health Care System, and was formerly chair of the UMass Board of Trustees. He also serves on the board of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate in Boston, and is an alumnus of UMass Dartmouth.

Robert S. Karam Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2001 to provide financial assistance to motivated UMass students from the country of Lebanon and/or alumni of B.M.C. Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts. Robert Karam, a 1967 graduate of UMass Dartmouth, is a principal of Karam Financial Group, located in his hometown of Fall River.

Devoting much of his time to serving the community, he served as chair of the UMass Board of Trustees and the Board of Trustees of Southeastern Massachusetts University, as well as on the UMass Memorial Health Care Board of Trustees.

Recipients of National Scholarships and Fellowships The Office of National Scholarship Advisement, a campuswide program housed within Commonwealth Honors College, assists students throughout the university who seek to compete for prestigious national scholarships and fellowships. Commonwealth Honors College recognizes the students who have received such awards in the past year.

DAAD Scholarships and Grants (German Academic Exchange) Provides support for one to two years of study at a German university for U.S. and Canadian students in their final year of college.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by the United States Congress in 1986 in honor the 1964 presidential candidate and former U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. The Program's goal is to provide a continuing source of highly-qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in those fields.

Fulbright Scholarship The Fulbright U.S. Student Program expands perspectives through academic and professional advancement and cross-cultural dialogue. In partnership with more than 140 countries worldwide, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds. Program participants pursue graduate study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.
