Brooke Gladstone, author of “The Influencing Machine” 4 p.m. / Hoff Theater, stamp student union

The First Year Book program will host Brooke Gladstone, author of “The Influencing Machine,” which tells a history of journalism in a graphic format. She argues that the “media machine is a delusion,” comparing it to a funhouse mirror that reflects, in part, ourselves.

Operation 1856: UMD’s Largest Zumba Class 6–7 p.m. / Cole Student Activities Building

This Latin-inspired dance workout, taught by Campus Recreation Services student instructors, is a fitness party for people of all ages and skill levels.

Nearly 900 people came out last year, and in 2012, the goal is 1,856 participants, based on the year of the university’s founding. Wear athletic shoes and workout gear. No gym membership required.

The Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) offers the latest installment of its weekly “Digital Dialogues” lectures. THATCamp is an open, inexpensive meeting where humanists and technologists of all skill levels learn and build in sessions proposed on the spot. Amanda French will speak on the “unconference” trend and its place within digital humanities and education.

Numerous studies reveal that older adults who engage in creative activities can slow down the aging process by maximizing the use of their brains and bodies. Join Rinde Eckert, creator of “And God Created Great Whales,” as he talks about the process of making a work about a composer who is slowly losing his memory. Other panelists are David C. Driskell, distinguished university professor emeritus of art at Maryland; Sharon Simson, research professor in the state Department of Health Services Administration’s Center on Aging; and poet A.B. Dr. Thomas J. Fogarty is an internationally recognized cardiovascular surgeon, inventor, entrepreneur and vintner. He is a member of the Inventors Hall of Fame and the National Academy of Engineering.

Shannon Dooling’s “Like a Unicorn in Captivity” is a response to and an interpretation of the work of writer and aviator Anne Morrow Lindbergh. In “A World Apart ...
