LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Terp Alumni, As the University of Maryland Alumni Association celebrates its 30th anniversary, I’m proud to declare that the state of the association is stronger than ever. The Alumni Association, formed in 1989 through an act of the Maryland General Assembly, has a mission of service to both the university and its graduates.

Our success lies in the dedication of our current and past volunteer leaders. These alumni have given countless hours in service to our national Board of Governors and serve in leadership roles in our regional, affinity, special interest, college/unit and industry groups.

As of this year, we boast 60 alumni networks supported by over 450 volunteer leaders. The Alumni Association, along with our alumni networks, sponsored over 700 programs for our 377,000+ living alumni.

Our networks offer meaningful opportunities for alumni to connect with one another, and our volunteer leaders continue to build innovative and engaging programs, exponentially increasing the number of alumni we reach each year.

While we strive to serve alumni professionally and personally, we are also dedicated to advancing the university in the following ways:  Attracting the best and brightest students through prospective and admitted student programs;  Creating a culture of loyalty among our Student Alumni Leadership Council;  Using the power of alumni to promote legislative action and public financial support through the Terp Advocacy Network;  Elevating the university through our social media advocacy program, UMD Champions;  Promoting philanthropy among alumni and friends; and,  Serving the conference/meeting needs of the university, alumni and community at our state-of-the-art facility, the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

With the university’s support, our robust Alumni Association staff is excited to work with you to achieve even more this upcoming year.

EVENTS

Whether you’re interested in gathering at athletic events, coming back to campus or networking with fellow Terps, your Alumni Association hosts hundreds of events across the world and online each year.

TERRAPIN DISRUPTORS SILICON VALLEY In the third event of the Terrapin Disruptors series, alumni and friends enjoyed a TED talk-style program featuring alumni speakers sharing insights into the future of technology and business.

ALUMNAE LEADERSHIP PANEL AND RECEPTION IN NEW YORK CITY Alumna Cate Luzio ’97 hosted over 75 alumnae leaders at what was the largest gathering of its kind in NYC.

HOMECOMING More than 1,500 alumni and fans flooded the Riggs Alumni Center for our second annual Terp Beer Garden and Tailgate featuring the Terp Marketplace.

PENGUIN AND A MOVIE In partnership with the Maryland Zoo, 70 attendees met an African penguin and enjoyed a showing of “Happy Feet.”

This family-friendly event kicked off Homecoming!

“MEET MARYLAND” LOS ANGELES TERPS ALUMNI RECEPTION More than 100 alumni and friends gathered to hear exciting updates from Athletics Director Damon Evans and Chief Strategy Officer for Economic Development Ken Ulman.

FEARLESS CONVERSATIONS: AMERICA’S PLACE IN THE WORLD The Honorable James R. Clapper ’63, former director of national intelligence, and Shibley Telhami, the Anwar Sadat Professor for Peace and Development, led a fearless conversation in August on U.S. diplomacy, national intelligence and current events.

TIPS FROM THE TEE Over 75 Terp alumnae of diverse backgrounds gathered to learn golf and leadership skills from CEO and author Rose Harper as well as PGA-certified golfing experts.

TERPS ON THE HARBOR Boston-area Terps gathered for an evening of food, drink and networking at this second annual event. Participants heard from men’s soccer head coach Sasho Cirovski and Alumni Association Executive Director Amy Eichhorst.

TERPS ON THE BAY Alumni gathered at the Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis to network and hear from university experts about student research aimed at protecting the Chesapeake Bay.

MARYLAND IN MANHATTAN For the ninth annual event, five Terrapin Connectors were recognized and awarded before attendees mixed and mingled with Athletics Director Damon Evans and several team coaches. � GOLDEN TERPS 50TH REUNION Members of the Class of 1969 came back to campus to enjoy brunch in the Riggs Alumni Center and receive their emeriti alumni medallions before participating in the May Commencement ceremony. LESSONS FROM LENNY Authors Walt Williams ’92 and Tony Massenburg ’90 were joined by Gary Williams ’68, Christy Winters ’90 and Johnny Rhodes ’96 to discuss the legacy of basketball player Len Bias. Johnny Holliday moderated the event, attended by over 85 Terps.

TERP ENTREPRENEUR ALUMNI NETWORK LAUNCH This spring we celebrated the launch of our newest alumni network at the UMD Startup Suite in Diamondback Garage and the new College Park WeWork. Over 150 alumni enjoyed a startup expo and remarks by Sam Medile ’80, CEO and founder of Off Campus Parking LLC.

FEARLESS CONVERSATIONS: GLOBAL HEALTH STORIES The School of Public Health (SPH) in partnership with the Alumni Association hosted an engaging conversation about the launch of SPH’s Global Health Initiative and to hear stories from renowned faculty and current students.

ALUMNI ADVOCACY PROGRAMS This past year we engaged over 80 Maryland state legislators through in-district meetings and events to advocate on behalf of UMD, including Terp Advocacy Day and Terps on the Hill. We also launched a new online advocacy engagement platform.

TERRAPIN TASTE FEST This inaugural Baltimore event featured 20 alumni-owned food and beverage vendors, along with activity stations and entertainment for the whole family.

EXPANDED PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS This past year we hosted over 50 professional programs to help alumni boost their careers, including C-suite and industry networking groups, business leader meetups, career bootcamps and “Mornings with Maryland” networking events at companies with a high concentration of Terp alumni.

VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to our 450+ volunteer leaders who make our organization great, including our 110 new volunteer leaders who started service in the 2018–19 year.

REGIONAL NETWORK EVENTS TERPS ON TAP–DC NETWORK Terps in DC met for a Maryland craft beer tasting, hosted by Fritz Hahn ’98, Washington Post reporter covering bars, drinks and nightlife.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY TRIVIA NIGHT Terps gathered at 7 Locks Brewery in Rockville for food, drinks and UMDthemed trivia. HOWARD COUNTY WINE AND PAINT NIGHT The Howard County Alumni Network and the College of Education network co-hosted this event where alumni painted a picture of Testudo while enjoying food and drinks and networking.

 DO GOOD EVENTS Terps are bold, innovative, smart—and generous. Every April, alumni unite to Do Good in their communities. This year, 574 Terps participated in 12 events across the nation: SEATTLE TERPS WITH REBUILDING TOGETHER SEATTLE

ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN ALUMNI NETWORK ANNUAL SUMMER BBQ The network held its eighth annual summer BBQ for alumni and their families as well as students to celebrate at their largest event of the year.

 VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE More than 80 alumni network leaders came back to campus for professional development, networking and celebration. The event, which included tours of the new Cole Field House and a radical brainstorming activity with the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, was awarded the Silver award for Alumni Relations: Creative Strategies for Engaging Volunteers by District II of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

ACADEMIC NETWORK EVENTS COLLEGE OF EDUCATION “EDUCATOR APPRECIATION” HAPPY HOUR 25 Terp educators attended a happy hour at Terp-owned 7 Locks Brewing.

GYMKANA HOME SHOW AND PRE-SHOW RECEPTION The School of Public Health and the School of Public Health Alumni Network co-hosted this second annual show and reception.

STUDENT AND RECENT GRADUATE ENGAGEMENT

TERPS UNDER 30 In its second year, more than 150 students and alumni attended this TED-talk style event featuring alumni speakers in the fields of education, engineering and business.

The event was the recipient of the national CASE award for Outstanding Student Advancement Program.

STUDENT ALUMNI LEADERSHIP COUNCIL The SALC hosted, co-sponsored and participated in 71 events during the 2018–19 academic year including Terps Under 30, Advocacy Day, Table for Terps alumni dinners and Bend & Bagels, all under the guidance of director Lauren Norris ’11, M.A. ’16, winner of the national CASE ASAP award for Outstanding Adviser.

RECENT GRAD EVENTS • One World Happy Hour: Nearly 100 recent graduates gathered at the One World Observatory in New York City atop the World Trade Center.

• NetWorkout Series: This event series encourages recent alumni to attend a workout class together prior to a happy hour or brunch featuring a guest speaker on the topic of healthy living.

FAMILY WEEKEND LEGACY DINNER Our inaugural Family Weekend Legacy Dinner was attended by more than 150 multigeneration Terps and their families, including current UMD students.

ALUMNI ADMISSIONS SYMPOSIUM In the program’s second year, alumni from Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia gathered at the Riggs Alumni Center to hear from the Alumni Association, Undergraduate Admissions, and the Office of Student Financial Aid on tips for becoming a competitive UMD applicant.

COMMUNICATIONS AND ONLINE PROGRAMS

M BOOK The 2018–19 academic year saw the relaunch of the M Book as a guide to the student experience with a traditions overview and UMD bucket list for all first year students.

The book received the 2019 Grand Gold CASE Circle of Excellence Award in the Design: Multi-Page Publications/Folders category.

GOLD DIGEST Part of our new strategic communication strategy, the GOLD Digest caters to 70,000+ graduates of the last decade, highlighting campus news, job opportunities and fun quizzes.

INSIDE THE SHELL This year all members began to receive a monthly email alert showcasing the rewards of their membership, including new member events and benefits.

VIRTUAL PROGRAMS WEBINARS This year, 615 people participated in free Alumni Association webinars, including ones on these top five topics: • The Art of Presence • Career Transitions: How to Change Lanes or Advance Forward With Ease • Web Trends for 2019: What You Need to Know • How Networking Can Lead to Business Success • S elf-Leadership and Happiness TERRAPINS CONNECT Over the past year Terrapins Connect, our exclusive mentorship platform, continued to be a draw for personal and professional development, attracting 2,546 alumni and 2,477 students. ALUMNI MARCH MADNESS The Alumni Association partnered with the University Libraries and University Archives to host a fun alumni March Madness competition highlighting notable alumni. It received over 10,000 votes over the course of two weeks.

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES AND MEMBERSHIP

BIG TEN ALUMNI RELATIONS CONFERENCE The Alumni Association hosted over 70 colleagues from 13 Big Ten Conference schools to share best practices, exchange ideas and enjoy professional development sessions.

AFFINITY PARTNERS THE HOTEL AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND In 2019, The Hotel at The University of Maryland became the official hotel of the University of Maryland Alumni Association.

The Hotel will be hosting events for alumni, offering discounted rates for room reservations and is serving as a presenting sponsor of Homecoming.

HEALTHY BALANCE BLOG In partnership with the University of Maryland Medical System and the University of Maryland School of Medicine, this blog posts monthly content ranging from what to include in your lunchbox to ways to alleviate stress.

ALUMNI AWARDS AND RECOGNITION A CELEBRATION OF TERPS More than 260 alumni and friends joined us in celebrating seven outstanding awardees at our inaugural marquee event, A Celebration of Terps: Featuring the Maryland Awards, hosted at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

MEMBERSHIP 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND ALUMNI ASSOCIATION To commemorate this milestone, we kicked off a months-long celebration with a membersonly breakfast on April 27, attended by more than 150 alumni. We continued with a “then and now” spring membership campaign, which attracted 1,705 new members. The celebration will continue through the end of 2019, including a special 30th anniversary Homecoming Alumni Tailgate.

TERP DEALS We relaunched our online rewards program for members with a new partner, Alumni Access. Since the relaunch, more than 1,900 members have used the program to save more than $8,130 at 150,000 restaurants and retailers nationwide. TERPS AT THE ZOO Members were invited to an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoo’s Great Cats exhibit, led by Great Cats and Bears Animal Keeper Katy Juliano ’14. LIFE WALL SEARCH Thanks to students from the Honors College’s Entrepreneurship & Innovation Program, lifetime members can now easily locate their names on the Frann G. and Eric S. Francis Lifetime Member Wall via alumni.umd.edu/lifewall.
