I am certain that your time at the University of Maryland has been filled with fearless ideas, friendships and opportunities. As president of this great university, I want to express my hope that you have explored new areas and discovered new talents. The world is waiting for you to share them. As you move beyond the campus, I hope you will remember the intellectual curiosity and drive that inspired your time here. Graduating does not mean that learning has come to an end. Speaker Biographies

REHAN STATON STUDENT SPEAKER Getting up at dawn every day to ride a trash truck or refurbish dumpsters to help support his family before attending classes at UMD, Rehan Staton would repeat a famous mantra from Muhammad Ali: “Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” And he didn’t quit. Despite facing obstacles that could have wilted anyone’s determination, Staton used the energy he once expended on martial arts tournaments to earn a history degree and propel himself instead toward a legal career. Growing up in Bowie, Md., with a loving and supportive single father, Staton overcame negative expectations such as hearing someone say he was more likely to end up in jail than a college classroom. Although he once dreamed of becoming a professional boxer, rotator cuff injuries derailed his athletic pursuits. Instead, after graduating from high school, he got a job at a trucking company, hauling trash and painting dumpsters. His co-workers had a simple message: Don’t stay here with us. Go to college. “If it wasn’t for them,” he says, “I wouldn’t have gone to college.”

Staton enrolled in 2014 at Bowie State University, then two years later transferred to UMD, succeeding with a 3.84 GPA. Up at 4 a.m. each day to ride a truck or paint, Staton would listen to self-recorded versions of his notes before going to school, and then return to work after class to finish his shift. “UMD changed my life forever,” he says. “It was the greatest decision of my life.” In addition to making the Dean’s List every semester at UMD, Staton also served as president of the History Undergraduate Association, the Department of History representative for the College of Arts and Humanities Dean’s Advisory Board and the student representative for the College of Arts and Humanities Dean’s Cabinet. He was also given the 2017 Office of Multi-ethnic Student Education Academic Excellence Award. Staton is currently weighing several job opportunities and plans to attend law school in the fall of 2020 and represent ex-convicts and death row inmates. “I want to advocate for those incarcerated who have experienced injustices and whose voices are often suppressed,” he says.

JOHN B. KING JR. COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER The life story of John B. King Jr., the 10th U.S. secretary of education and president and CEO of The Education Trust, is a testament to the power of an excellent education and great teachers. Both of King’s parents were career New York City public school educators. They passed away from illness by the time King was 12 years old. King credits his New York City public school teachers — particularly at P.S. 276 and Mark Twain Junior High School — for saving his life by providing him with rich and engaging educational experiences and giving him hope for the future. King began his career as a high school social studies teacher in Puerto Rico and Boston, Mass., and as a middle school principal, before becoming the first AfricanAmerican and Puerto Rican to serve as New York State education commissioner. He went on to be U.S. deputy secretary of education, overseeing all policies and programs related to P–12 education, English learners, special education and innovation. In tapping him to become secretary of education, President Barack Obama called King “an exceptionally talented educator,” citing his commitment to “preparing every child for success” and his lifelong dedication

to education as a teacher, principal, and leader of schools and school systems. King now leads The Education Trust, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to identify and close opportunity and achievement gaps, from preschool through college. King holds a Bachelor of Arts in government from Harvard University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, as well as a Master of Arts in the teaching of social studies and a doctorate in education from Teachers College at Columbia University. He serves as a visiting professor at the University of Maryland’s College of Education and is a member of several boards, including those for The Century Foundation, The Robin Hood Foundation, Teach Plus, and The American Museum of Natural History. He also serves on several advisory boards, including former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative, The Rework America Task Force, The GOOD+ Foundation’s Fatherhood Leadership Council, and The National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement at the University of California. King lives in Silver Spring, Md., with his wife (a former kindergarten and first-grade teacher) and his two daughters, who attend local public schools.

Doctoral Degrees The doctoral degree is the most advanced earned degree conferred by American institutions. There are two distinct types: the practitioner’s degree and the research degree. The first type represents advanced training for the practice of various professions, principally doctor of audiology, doctor of medicine, juris doctor, doctor of pharmacy and doctor of veterinary medicine. These degrees do not involve the completion of original research by the student. The University of Maryland, at the professional school in Baltimore, awarded the first two dental degrees on March 9, 1841.
