PROGRAM DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Mary Dockter, PT, PhD, Physical Therapy As I am in the midst of my 10th year as Program Director for the Department of Physical Therapy (22 years total at the University of Mary) and during this time of New Year’s resolutions, I felt this was a timely and appropriate title to my update.

together in 1995. I know I speak for many of my deep gratitude for their tireless dedication, guidance, wisdom, and mentorship. Thankfully neither of them is going far and we certainly hope to continue to utilize their skills in some capacity in the coming years. We will keep you posted on some type of celebratory event in the near future thanking them for their service and wishing them well on their next phase. I look forward to hearing the many stories from Drs. Roller and Parker, faculty, friends, and alumni!

Looking back

Over the past 10 years much has changed, and much has stayed the same. I am thankful for a loyal and steadfast commitment from our team of faculty and staff. In a time in which most PT programs are struggling to fill open positions, we have been blessed with strong retention. Our 9- member faculty has an average length of service to the University of 15 years! Our program has grown from a cohort of 21 students in 1997 to our current status of 48 students/cohort. Additionally, the program transitioned from a master’s degree to a clinical doctorate in 2003, graduating its first DPT cohort in 2006. This makes for a bustling

The future builds on the foundation of the past.” Lailah Gifty Akita Certainly, the University of Mary Physical Therapy Program’s (U of Mary PT) story wouldn’t even have been started without the vision, perseverance, and hard work of our early leaders, Dr. Jodi Roller and Dr. Michael Parker.

As Dr. Roller notes in her comments, she will be transitioning into a new phase this summer retirement. It is fitting that Dr. Parker also announced his impending retirement as the two of them started their journey at the U of Mary

facility when all 3 cohorts are in session. The program has transitioned from its early days in Greg Butler Hall, to the Richard Tschider Center, to its current location in town.

Staying the Course "Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal." - Henry Ford As Dr. Roller notes in her comments, we are excited to move forward as the St. Gianna School of Health Sciences and with a mission focused on the dignity of the human person.

While this is a new name and mission, what hasn’t changed is our dedication to educating physical therapists who demonstrate courage in making ethical decisions, compassion in serving others, and are excellent clinicians. What also hasn’t changed is our sincere appreciation for our dedicated clinical faculty who continue to support and guide our students. As clinical education is almost 1/3 of the curriculum, we recognize our success has much to do with your time and efforts!

Visualizing the Future “The future depends on what you do today.”

Mahatma Gandhi While faculty are immersed in working with students on a day to day basis, and engaging in scholarship and service, we are also spending a significant amount of time planning for the future. The program moved into its current location in January 2014 with a plan to move back on to campus in the future. The University of Mary is embarking on Phase II of its Vision

2030 mission advancement plan with our new interprofessional space being a part of these efforts. We continue to work with University administration on planning and fundraising for this space that will bring PT back on to campus and interspersed among all program in the St. Gianna School of Health Sciences. While delivering a quality education program is always at the forefront of our efforts, faculty are ramping up for its next accreditation self-study and visit in fall 2022. As alumni, clinical faculty, students, and employers, know you will hold an integral role in that process. And finally, as faculty say farewell to Dr. Roller and Dr. Parker (at least in their current full-time roles), we look forward to the addition of a new faculty member who will join us in fall 2020. Closer to that time, we will make a formal announcement and introduce you to this outstanding clinician and future member of the U of Mary PT faculty team.

DEAN’S UPDATE SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES Jodi Roller, PT, DPT, EdD

Through a written request for donations as well as social media, PT alumni have likely heard that our school is in the process of becoming St. Gianna School of Health Sciences. It is our hope and prayer that we can generate the necessary gifts to renovate the space on campus that will house St. Gianna’s. We are also adding to those aspirations a new state-of-the art simulation laboratory that can be used interprofessionally. These are lofty but achievable bricks and mortar type goals, but St. Gianna’s is developing into much more than bricks and mortar. In the spirit of this modern-day saint, we have developed a new mission statement which is: Prepare health care professionals, anchored in moral courage, who respect and defend the dignity of the human person. This mission statement had as its origin the Pilgrimage to Lourdes just over two years ago.

The pilgrimage was entitled “Dignity of the Human Person” and emphasized the difference between respect for persons in Hitler’s Germany and in Lourdes. In Nazi Germany, human dignity was not valued (unless one was of the Aryan race) in order to advance the welfare of the State and develop a master race. Anyone who couldn’t contribute to the State of Germany was labeled an “unnecessary eater” and eliminated. In Lourdes on the other hand, the least of our brothers are treated with the

ultimate dignity and respect. With our new mission, we boldly state that St. Gianna’s School of Health Sciences is distinct from other health science schools. While we all have a mission to develop competent and caring health professionals, St. Gianna’s will have graduates who have been immersed in a culture that emphasizes developing the courage to defend our patients and their right to be treated with the respect they are due because they are human.

In the future, when rationing health care becomes a reality; when letting or helping someone die to avoid the expense of caring for them becomes more the norm, and where “reproductive rights” take precedence over basic human rights, our graduates will be the voice for those who cannot defend themselves.

It will be up to a new dean of the school of health sciences to shepherd St. Gianna’s into a new reality. After 25 year of service to the University of Mary, 15 of those as DCE and eventually Chair of the PT Program followed by 10 years as Dean, I will retire at the end of May. I plan to do some writing, reading, traveling, and watching my 7 grandchildren, none of whom live in Bismarck, in activities I’ve yet to see. I know I leave the school in good hands, and I will be forever grateful to the University of Mary and the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery for providing me with multiple opportunities to serve and to fill my life with rewarding relationships with students, faculty, alumni, and staff.

Clinical Education Updates Lauren Emmel, PT, DPT, PCS This time of year, as we reflect on life’s greatest blessings, we are thankful to our “extended” family who work hard to serve our students in the clinical education setting. Each year, we recognize a winsome clinical educator who has been nominated by our students or alumni and selected by the Directors of Clinical Education.

This year’s recipient of the Clinical Educator of the Year award is Katie Schlosser.

Katie is an alumna from the University of Mary’s DPT program in 2013. She is board certified as a pediatric specialist and holds certification in lymphedema management. Her continuing education has focused on primarily pediatric-related topics, but also includes pelvic floor dysfunction and serial casting.

In addition to educating DPT students, Katie demonstrates commitment to service through participation in Power of 100 Women, a member of “Friendship Park”, a group bringing an inclusive park to Dickinson, and the cofounder of a non-profit organization called Fishin for the Cure.

Katie models what she teaches to our students by witnessing her vocation and inspiring others to view the practice of physical therapy, “as the best possible setting for living a life of love and compassion as Jesus did.”

In the next 5 years, Katie hopes, “the families [she] support[s] will be able to play at Friendship Park and that [she is] able to continue to grow as a therapist, mother, and wife into a better version of [herself.”

SAVE THE DATE! Credentialed Clinical Instructor Program (CCIP) coming to Fargo, ND! The University of Mary PT Program is cohosting the CCIP course with the University of Jamestown at the University of Mary Butler Center located at 1351 Page Dr S #103 Fargo, ND. The course will be hosted on Thursday, May 7 and Friday, May 8, 2020—the perfect pre-con for Fargo Marathon weekend for all those of you who will be in the Fargo area for race day.

The course aims to equip clinical instructors to create the best possible learning experiences and environment for students in PT, OT, SLP, and other healthcare disciplines.

Carolyne (Kukla) Poepping (2013) and her husband welcomed their second child, a boy, Finn, on 9/21/19. He joins brother Bennett 2 years old.

Gina Gentzkow (2015) welcomed their daughter, Grace Lynn Gentzkow. Gina started a new position with BECEP Early Intervention.

Professional Updates ReeAnn (Mehus) Sadowsky (2019) started work at the Bone and Joint Center in Dickinson in June, to start their new therapy department. She married Austyn Sadowsky on 8/24/19.

Rebecca (Frickey) Kopplow (2017) married Jake Kopplow on 8/10/19. Rebecca joined HealthQuest Therapy in December 2018.

Ryan Malm (2015) married Carlie on 5/11/2019.

Ryan started at the Bone and Joint Center in Bismarck, ND in December 2018.

Madison (Klatt) Westby (2019) married Seth Westby on 6/22/19. Maddi started at Spooner Physical Therapy in Phoenix.

Mandy Peerboom (2017) was recently engaged to Brent and joined Reclaim Health (Mees Physical Therapy) in Lincoln, ND.

Sadie (Gjermundson) Dale (2019) started a Physical Therapy Department, at Elbowoods Memorial Health Center, on the Fort Berthold Reservation in ND.

Class Updates Matthew Gallegos, SPT, ATC Class of 2020 President “IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!” **Epic guitar solo** The class of 2020 has reached the climax of our epic adventure at the University of Mary. The journey in total thus far has encompassed hundreds of combined study hours, dozens of examinations, and 24 weeks of clinical experience across the nation, with only 10 more weeks standing between us and our doctorate degrees in physical therapy. This last academic year of 2019 has kept us third-year students plenty busy finalizing research, completing community and international service projects, and preparing to pass the National Physical Therapy Exam.

Just under half of our class was fortunate to spend 10 days in Guatemala this last summer providing pro bono physical therapy, while the remaining class was blessed with the opportunity to split into groups of community projects that addressed various needs such as providing awareness on sex-trafficking in ND, adaptive golf with individuals having disabilities, and once again putting on the Go Baby Go project in collaboration with the U of Mary engineering program. Many students also attended the 2nd annual North Dakota Student Conclave hosted by the North Dakota Student Special Interest Group (NDSSIG) at the University of Jamestown.

Another accolade added to our class resume was the initiation of the Catholic Medical Association student group at the University of Mary. The process was headed by one of our

classmates, Emma Ulmer, and was created with the intent of uniting students of various health care majors so that we could learn more about our interdisciplinary interactions and discuss faith-based issues facing the medical world today. Lastly, to close out our education, we’ve also been given the opportunity to obtain professional certifications such as LSVT and SFMA to aid our development into our careers.

Since embarking on this journey together in 2017, we have become more than a class – but a family centered on one vision of excelling as physical therapists and pushing each other to our greatest potential. It has not been an easy road, but it will continue to be a worthwhile one. As we conclude our time at the University of Mary, I intend to also use this newsletter to extend on behalf of the class of 2020, our sincere gratitude for all the unconditional support and patience we’ve received over the last 3 years as we completed our doctorate education. Thank you!

Alex Poland, SPT Class of 2021 President The Class of 2021 is back, and ready to take on another semester of instructional learning! It is evident that a tremendous amount of personal and professional growth has accumulated among us in the last several months. This past summer, we celebrated with our family and friends as we received our white coats prior to departing for our first clinical rotation. Our white coats signified not only the accomplishments we have already achieved, but also represent the future clinicians we one day will be. We have become truly grateful for the opportunity to develop grit and a growth mindset in order to best serve those in need.

This was apparent during our first clinical rotation, as for the first time, we were able to apply our acquired knowledge towards treating actual patients in a variety of settings. Our love for service, however, has not stopped at the clinic door. Our class has continued to be active in our shared goals of community, advocacy, and volunteering.

In September, many of us attended the ND SSIG Student Conclave in Fargo in which we learned a lot about residency programs, starting our own clinics, and how to make the most of our clinical rotations. For the first time in October, our department celebrated a professional clothing swap, which fostered community in a fun, fashionable way.

In November, we celebrated our second annual Friendsgiving Dinner, which left our bellies full of delicious family recipes and our hearts full of thanksgiving for one another. We also celebrated the newly named St. Gianna School of Health Science in remembrance of St. Gianna

who dedicated her life advocating for the dignity of the human person.

Finally, many of us have found creative ways to share our time and joy with those in the community by volunteering at the University of Mary Day of Service, at the Designer Gene Buddy Walk, the Alzheimer's Disease and Out of the Darkness Awareness Walk and with Ministry on the Margins. We look forward to 2020, as we will continue to dive further into new domains of learning in pediatrics, geriatrics, and orthopedics.

Kiersten Sabolik, SPT Class of 2022 President The class of 2022 has survived our first semester! What a whirlwind it has been. From anatomy, to goniometry, to documentation, the amount of knowledge we have gained after just one semester is mind blowing. After adjusting to the pace of classes (Dr. Allen did say he was very worried about us after seeing our stress level on the first day of class), 48 of us managed to make it to Christmas break, smarter and more excited about our futures helping others.

The community within our cohort has continually grown over the few months that we have been together. A diverse class all the way from Lithuania, New York, North Carolina, and all throughout the Midwest, we have all found great friendships with each other. Besides the many hours each week we spend together in the classroom, you can also find us together studying, at coffee shops, bible studies, at Friendsgiving and other holiday gatherings.

Having such a supportive and fun community of fellow learners has been a real blessing.

We can also be found giving back our time and talent volunteering in the community. I was blown away by our efforts during our winter clothing drive this October. The first-year

students scrounged up enough gear to top the second year’s haul, winning us a potluck lunch.

But more importantly, we greatly surpassed our goal bringing in over 3000 clothing items to help those in need stay warm this winter.

We participated in U Mary’s Day of Service and have volunteered at the Designer Genes Buddy Walk, Interview days, the Bismarck marathon, and are looking forward to more opportunities in the upcoming year. We are excited for the upcoming year of growth and knowledge as we continue our journey towards becoming DPT’s!

CLASS of 2020 SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECTS GO BABY GO Valerie Javernick and JaNae Pahlen, SPT This summer, a group of 3rd-year physical therapy students collaborated with engineering students from the University of Mary to modify battery-operated, ride-on toy cars for five local children with mobility-related limitations. The Go Baby Go project mission was to increase a child’s ability to move, learn, play, and interact with other children in his or her environment.

With the help from local pediatric physical therapists, the physical therapy students identified five local Bismarck and Mandan children and their families that would benefit from a ride-on-top toy car to increase the child’s mobility and accessibility to his or her environment. The students raised funds for the project with help from sponsors Kupper Chevrolet of Mandan and received a donation from ND Life Skills and Transitions Center.

The Go Baby Go project gave the students an opportunity to apply their physical therapy knowledge to modify and adapt each car to fit each child’s needs specifically. For example, the students took measurements of each child in order to design and modify the car seat to fit the child’s body. The car seat was reconstructed to include a five-point harness, lateral supports to promote independent sitting as needed, and a high backrest for safety. Each car seat was designed to account for future growth spurts so that parents could adjust as needed.

The physical therapy students learned about the engineering aspect of the project. The students worked together to rewire the cars to allow the parents to use a remote control to assist the child with navigating and controlling the car safely.

The cars were modified with an adaptive button or joystick that the child pushes when he or she wants to move. Every detail of remodeling and decorating the car was specifically catered to the child’s mobility needs and unique interests and hobbies. From “speedy” hot rod cars featuring Baby Shark, Frozen, Minnie Mouse, or dinosaurs, to the project’s first-ever two-seater car fit for the farm life, each child’s and family’s unique story was maintained front and center during the process.

On August 1st, the students successfully presented the cars to children and families. It was a day filled with many smiles and laughter as everyone watched the kids use their own power mobility devices to interact and play with their siblings, parents, grandparents, and friends.

This community service project was a success as seen with the impact the modified ride-on cars had on each child’s life to promote independent mobility in his or her environment.

This is the third year the Go Baby Go project was active at the University of Mary. The project is student-run with the guidance of faculty members Dr. Heather Lundeen, physical therapy, and Rodrigo da Costa Aparecido, engineering.

31:8 PROJECT AND LITERATURE REVIEW Shanon Lene, SPT Several students in the Class of 2020 partnered with 31:8 Project in data collection and creation of a comprehensive literature review on human trafficking and pornography. Human Trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery mediated by supply and demand. Freedom is taken from victims, and are moved by means of violence, coercion, deception, servitude, and other slavery practices. As health care providers it is important that we are knowledgeable and aware of trafficking victims, as these individuals are visiting healthcare

providers at least once during their captivity and aren’t recognized as victims. These students collaborated with Professor Amy Hollar at the University of Mary who is currently on the Board of Directors for 31:8 Project. 31:8 Project was founded in 2010 by Stacy Schaffer and their main goal and focus is to advocate for victims of human trafficking by providing education, conducting research, create curriculums and collaborate with other people and organizations.

GUATEMALA SERVICE-LEARNING EXPERIENCE Drew Olson, SPT This past August 21 third year physical therapy students and Dr. Missy Taylor traveled to Guatemala to embark on a service- learning experience. Our first stop was San Lucas Toliman. During our first day, our group took a boat ride across Lake Atitlán which included stops in three cities: San Antonio Palopo, Santa Catarina Palopo, and Panajachel. We had lunch, did some shopping, and enjoyed the culture experience of Guatemala. While in San Lucas Toliman, we worked with 3 therapists from Big Stone Therapy and provided physical therapy services to individuals in the surrounding communities. We also spent a day at Hospital Monseñor Gregorio Schaffer in San Lucas where residents of the community where able to

come and receive physical therapy services. It was a great opportunity and pleasure to work with these individuals and give back to this wonderful community. While in San Lucas, we had the opportunity to enjoy the community including eating an enormous amount of rolled ice cream, renting out a soccer field to play on, enjoy the town public square, attend a coffee

plantation demonstration, and go on a 4am hike to view the sunrise.

Next, our adventure took us to Antigua where we teamed up with the God’s Child Project which is a group founded by Patrick Atkinson from Bismarck, ND in 1991.

Our main objective during our time in Antigua was to build houses for families in need. We split up into teams and were able to build 4 houses in 3 days. We all improved on our saw, hammer, and concrete mixing skills during that time. After completion of each house, the groups were able to present the house to the family along with a magnitude of gifts that were purchased from our groups fundraising as each family began life in their new home. While in Antigua we each stayed with a host family and were able to enjoy their company and

hospitality. Our fun in Antigua included hiking an active volcano, zip-lining, shopping, and nightly visits to a variety of restaurants.

Our last stop was to Hope Haven. While there, we were able to learn more about the mission of Hope Haven and assist them with teaching their employees manual therapy techniques, adjust a stander for a child, and organize their wheelchair supplies. We ended our day at Hope Haven with an impromptu wheelchair basketball and baseball game.

Overall, the trip was very successful for all. We would like to thank Big Stone Therapy, the God’s Child Project, Hope Haven, Dr. Missy Taylor, and all those who helped our group with fundraising. The class of 2020 looks forward to future students experiencing this fantastic trip for years to come!

CHRISTMAS COIN DRIVE Renee Oelkers, SPT The Second Annual Christmas Coin Drive took place December 9-13th. Coins were placed in jars dedicated to each faculty member. The faculty who had the highest dollar amount contained in their respective jar had to wear a Santa suit during finals week to spread Christmas cheer.

This year it was a close race between Dr. Missy Taylor and Dr. Jason Hogan, ultimately it was Dr. Missy Taylor who raised the most money and wore the Santa suit during finals week.

Thanks to the contribution from students and alumni, over $375 was collected and put towards Christmas gifts for a local family in need. Following the Benedictine value of service, students and alumni are excited to

continue this tradition of raising money for gifts for those in need each year.

HOMERUN HEROES PROJECT Kelly Bosch, SPT The 16th annual Homerun Heroes event will take place on January 26th, February 2nd & 9th this year! With a little help from Physical Therapy Students, children of all abilities are given the chance to play baseball. We will work in stations to work on hitting, throwing, and will finish the day with a friendly game! This event gives me a glimpse into exactly why I wanted to

pursue Physical Therapy. It gives us a chance to give children the opportunity to participate in a sport that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to due to safety. You will walk away each day knowing that you made a difference in someone else’s day. Now that is why we want to be Physical Therapists!

NORTH DAKOTA STUDENT SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP Drew Olson, 2019 ND Core Ambassador Ben Porter, 2019 NDSSIG Treasurer The North Dakota Student Special Interest Group and Core Ambassador had another successful year with student involvement.

Together, we held our second annual North Dakota Student Conclave in Fargo, ND. Roughly, 100 students and professionals attended the event. Students from the three PT schools in ND along with students from the PTA program from Northland College were in attendance. This was a great event with fantastic speakers for students to learn from along with network with students and professionals from the area. The NDSSIG board would like to thank all our sponsors and professionals who helped make this event possible. If you are an

alumnus who is interested in speaking at a future conclave, please do not hesitate to contact the NDSSIG group! The current plan is to host the 3rd annual Student Conclave in Grand Forks, ND next year! We were also able to hold three National Advocacy Dinners where we had the opportunity to listen to Chris Kraemer discuss advocacy and how students can get involved from a state and national level. It was a great year for student involvement through volunteer work, pub nights, and interest in national conferences. We look forward to the year 2020 to be another successful year of student involvement and advocacy.

SPTA UPDATES Maddie Moore, SPT This winter season, the U of Mary PT department came together and hosted a clothing drive, entitled “Moving into Colder Weather.� With all of us knowing how cold and unbearable ND winters can be, we set out to gather as many articles of winter gear that we could in order to provide for the less fortunate of our community through Ministry on the Margins. This clothing drive consisted

of a competition between the first- and secondyear classes, along with additional help from the U of Mary campus as well as several PT clinics in the area. Our initial goal was to gather 300 items, yet we surpassed this goal by tenfold; we were able to gather more than 3,000 winter items!!! This was incredibly exciting and will definitely be carried on in the future.

Parker Research Colloquium will be held on Friday, April 24, 2020 on the University of Mary campus. The Colloquium will be offered on the campus of the University of Mary in an environment that will offer many opportunities for interprofessional communication among all attendees. The Colloquium is an interprofessional event featuring student representatives from the University of Mary School of Health Sciences Programs in Athletic Training & Biomechanics, Bioethics, Exercise Science & Clinical Exercise Physiology, Occupational Therapy, Graduate Nursing, Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, and Speech and Language Pathology. The purpose of the Colloquium is to celebrate the scholarship of discovery as our students’ present current and new knowledge in their respective field of study.

Dr. Missy Taylor

Dr. Taylor lead her first student group to Guatemala in August and will be presenting a poster presentation at CSM on behalf of her student research group titled “The Effects of Jaw Clenching on Dynamic Postural Control in a Patient with Multiple Sclerosis”.

Dr. Donald Allen

In October 2019, Don attended his first Educational Leadership Conference in Bellevue, WA. He presented a poster on “Physical Therapy Student Perceptions of Human Anatomy Education Delivery Modalities” with Jodi Roller, Bethany Briggs, Kaari Burbach, Trenda Hoemberg, Chloe Sandberg and Jenny Schaetz. The poster received an Education Influencer Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation by the Physical Therapy Learning institute.

He is now a member of the Finance Committee of the APTA, ND, and is currently running a LSVT BIG course for seven current third year students.

Dr. Jason Hogan

Jason Hogan received his Doctor of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma in May 2019. He successfully defended his project entitled “Factors affecting frequency of school-based delivery for students with disabilities: Retrospective analysis of the School Outcome Measure” in April 2019.
