I

n this part of the world, we are farmers.

We plant seeds, and we wait for them to grow.

It’s the cadence we know best – patience and faith; sowing the soil and praying for rain.

Eight and a half years ago, we embarked on “Vision 2030,” a comprehensive planning initiative that gave rise to a robust strategic plan for the University of Mary. Part of this process involved engaging with our communities to see how the university could more fully serve the needs of our region and beyond. What we kept hearing was that western North Dakota needed a school of engineering. At first it seemed that was a job for someone else – the University of Mary has always been known for our programs in health care, education, and the liberal arts, but engineering would be new to who we’ve known ourselves to be. Except the demand wasn’t just for more engineers! Companies were telling us they needed engineers who were culturally prepared and ethically sensitive, engineers who could be leaders in the workplace and among their peers.

Well, preparing servant leaders of moral courage is literally what we do! So we set out to break ground on a new School of Engineering, not knowing then how

long and difficult a journey it would be, requiring the help and support of all our friends and supporters. But by 2020 we had opened a new state-of-the-art engineering facility, and our students and graduates since have proven that they’re indeed very well-prepared and professionally excellent.

The demand and the interest for the kind of engineers we are graduating has been soaring, and by every measure our School of Engineering is a great success.

But we are farmers, and we like to see things through to the end. We knew that by securing a naming philanthropic gift for our School of Engineering, we could not only provide security for the School’s future, but also increase its distinction.

About ten years ago, I had the opportunity to meet Harold Hamm, the founder of Continental Resources. He was the first to seriously invest in the Bakken oilfield of western North Dakota, and growing up in rural Oklahoma, the farmer’s patience and perseverance are his own. But the “Bakken play” was even more than that: Harold is a visionary who believes in a culture of the possible, the same kind of culture that moved our Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery to start a small college on a hill, over 60 years ago.

The flourishing and prosperity of the University of Mary is directly tied to the flourishing and prosperity of North Dakota, and Mr. Hamm is one of the people we have to thank for North Dakota’s success in the oil industry and our overall economic stability and growth.

That’s why I am thrilled to share with you that our School of Engineering is now the Hamm School of Engineering, through a generous $10 million gift from the Harold Hamm Foundation. This

partnership allows the Hamm School of Engineering to continue to educate morally courageous and culturally prepared engineers for generations to come.

But this gift, along with an additional $2 million from Continental Resources to endow a Chair of Engineering, not only makes a great difference for engineering at Mary. The $12 million combined gift is a game changer for the university as a whole. It allows us to officially launch Phase II of the Vision 2030 Capital Campaign, which you can read more about on page 11 in this issue. Phase II includes plans for our Saint Gianna School of Health Sciences, Marauders Athletics, and a campus welcome center, all of which will deepen and unify our efforts to prepare students across the university who believe, too, in a culture of the possible.

The work we have ahead of us as we continue to bring Vision 2030 to life is important work, but it won’t be easy. We have the vision, but we cannot do it on our own. I give thanks to God for His goodness to us, to the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery for their sponsorship and prayers, and to you, our alumni and friends, who continue to pray for us and support us in so many incredible ways.

In this issue, you’ll also find the names of people who have helped us make this vision into a reality, and for them we owe a special debt of gratitude. On behalf of our students, thank you for supporting the University of Mary. Know of my prayers for you as we enter into the Easter season.

arold Hamm is passionate about education and the difference it can make in someone’s life. “I am probably inspired more by students than anything else,” Hamm said. “Students today spend a lot of time working hard to get the education they need to pursue their dreams. That’s very inspiring to me and hopefully, I can provide that same inspiration back to them. Education freed me up from the poverty cycle, and I want every person in North Dakota to know it can do that for you too.”

Hamm grew up in rural Oklahoma and went to work in the oilfields as a teenager. In 1967, at the age of 21, Hamm 2

established Continental Resources. This grassroots startup turned into one of the top ten oil producers in the United States lower 48. A national leader in promoting health, education, and energy industry advocacy, Hamm has devoted much time and resources to championing a healthy and secure future for all Americans.

Hamm is devoted to preparing the next generation of energy industry leaders, which is why the Harold Hamm Foundation has made a $10 million philanthropic gift to the University of Mary, along with an additional $2 million gift from Continental Resources. It is the largest donation in the school’s history

and believed to be the largest-ever charitable gift given for education in the footprint of the Bakken Shale Formation of western North Dakota and eastern Montana. $10 million from the Harold Hamm Foundation goes toward naming the Hamm School of Engineering, while Continental Resources has specifically earmarked the additional $2 million to endow a Chair of Engineering, naming it the “Continental Resources | Monsignor James Shea Chair of Engineering.” This gift also launches Phase II of the University of Mary’s $272 million Vision 2030 Capital Campaign. The goal for Phase II is $87 million.

“This gift is significant in so many ways,” stated Hamm. “We believe so strongly in the values and mission of the University of Mary and the leadership of Monsignor Shea.

Continental Resources is serious about oil and gas production in the Bakken, and to sustain that growth we need some of the best and brightest engineering graduates.

We believe Mary’s engineering program will provide some of the most well-prepared engineers in the industry. So, we see this as a long-term partnership for the viability of the economy in western North Dakota.”

In just five years since its beginning, the new Hamm School of Engineering has already earned a reputation for rigorous course work, innovation, and multidisciplinary experiential learning during all four years of study in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, in addition to programs in construction management and computer science. These gifts will help the Hamm School of Engineering attract and retain top faculty from across the country to teach in the program, as well as enable the school to purchase crucial pieces of laboratory and teaching equipment to give students a hands-on experience with the most modern tools, according to Dr. Terry Pilling, dean of the Hamm School of Engineering, who is excited about the naming of the school.

Q&A

with Dr. David Tamisiea Dr. David Tamisiea uses his legal and theological background and his love of learning to serve the University of Mary in his role as dean of the School of Arts and Sciences.

Q: What was your career prior to coming to Mary?

A: I was an attorney in Dallas, Texas, for ten years. I did mostly business litigation, and I had just become partner in my firm when I got this crazy idea that I wanted to go back to graduate school to study theology.

I was always interested in theology and philosophy, and I had gotten involved with teaching it informally.

I’d just gotten married when I left my law career to go to graduate school and become a professor of theology.

After beginning my academic career, I left teaching for a little while to move back to Texas and start the Saint Philip Institute for Catechesis and Evangelization as the executive director and founder. I missed being at a university, so I called a friend who was working at the University of Mary and got a job as a professor of theology in 2018. In the summer of 2019, I became interim dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, which eventually became a permanent role.

Q: How has your past experience helped you in your role as dean?

A: My legal background has helped a lot. As a lawyer, you’re required to communicate orally and in writing, and being a good communicator is important when you’re overseeing a lot of people.

Our school is one of the largest at the university, so it’s important that I’m able to communicate well to my faculty. Being a lawyer also helped me learn to multitask and stay organized, and that’s something I need to do as dean as well.

Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?

A: Number one is the relationships that I form with the people whom I work with, when we’re all working for a common cause. As dean, I get to lead those efforts and get us all rowing in the same direction so that we can accomplish the mission of the University of Mary and the mission of our school in particular, which is to awaken in our students a Catholic imaginative vision so that they begin to see the world with new eyes that are attuned to all that is true, good, and beautiful in the world.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of work?

A: First and foremost, I love spending time with my family. My wife and I have been married for around 19 years, and we have six kids — three boys and three girls. I love spending time with my wife and kids. I’m also an avid reader and love to learn new things. I played football at Notre Dame, and I still consider myself an athlete as well. I like to exercise and go to the gym, and I have a goal of running 100 races, and I’m getting close! I do 5k and 10k races, and I just did my first triathlon, which I trained really hard for.

Q: Your school has a wide variety of majors and specialties.

What is overseeing that like?

A: It’s very enriching to work with people who specialize in everything from mathematics to poetry. It fits in well with my love of learning, and it’s fun for me to be around colleagues who specialize in areas that I’m not a specialist in because I can learn from them and glimpse into their worlds and help them do their disciplines better.

Q: What’s your message to Arts & Sciences alumni who read this?

A: Come back! We’d love to see you. Share with us your stories about what you’re doing with your lives, in your vocations, your families, and your work, because that’s ultimately what we’re aiming for. We want to help you discover your vocation, live it to the full, and go out and change the world.

Q: What is your vision for the future of the School of Arts and Sciences?

A: First, we want to grow our programs and enrollment so we can reach more students and change more lives. We will also continue to be creative in developing new programs and new ways of doing things, always striving for excellence in all that we do and making sure that everything we do is rooted in prayer.

We aim to cultivate in our students a philosophical habit of mind that has the capacity to grasp the whole and begin to have a wise understanding of things through the teaching of the liberal arts.

My family loves college football, and my kids participate in a variety of sports, which I enjoy watching. The youngest is six and the oldest just turned 17, so we stay pretty busy with their different games and meets.

University of Mary alumni Mat Charley and Joe Berger started playing music together while students at Mary. Now they’re part of a band that is gaining recognition worldwide.

M

at Charley, ’16, wanted to be a musician from a young age. He started playing violin around the age of six and writing songs when he was 13.

When he graduated from Bishop Ryan High School in Minot, North Dakota, 6

he went to the seminary in St. Paul for a year to discern the priesthood. But not long after leaving seminary, his music dreams took him to Los Angeles.

“I was trying to make it happen and do music, but I had no money, no contacts,

a car that didn’t work, and a terrible apartment,” Mat said. “After a year there, my mom and sisters convinced me to go finish my college degree and leave Los Angeles.

I ended up enrolling at the University of Mary for the spring semester to get a double major in theology and Catholic studies.”

Shortly after arriving at Mary, Mat crossed paths with Joe Berger, ’16, a track and field scholar-athlete who was studying business administration and marketing.

“I thought he looked really cool,” Joe said.

“So, I walked up to him and introduced myself. We became friends and stayed in touch, but it wasn’t until our senior year that we started playing music together.”

Once they started playing together, they quickly realized that their music had potential. “One of my friends was out in Los Angeles and knew someone who was setting up a showcase,” Joe said. “That’s when we thought, ‘let’s see how seriously we can take this.’” They spent some time in Los Angeles writing and recording songs and networking, which is when they realized they needed a lead singer.

“Strangely enough, we ended up finding our lead singer on Instagram,” Mat said.

Mark Race is a vocalist from Durham, England. They thought it was a long shot when they invited him to meet them in Los Angeles, but after a few Facebook messages between them, Mark was on the plane to meet Mat and Joe just ten days after their initial outreach.

“We clicked immediately,” Mat said.

The next step was picking a name for the band. “We had a list of probably over 3,000 names,” Mat said. “We wanted a word that didn’t really mean anything, with no prior association, so we could make it about us. We also wanted it to be one syllable. We came up with the name Raynes because Mark had a friend named Rain, and we changed it a little. But ultimately, a band name really means nothing, you know; it’s not like ‘The Beetles’ is a great band name. It doesn’t matter what you call it as long as people recognize it.”

Now the men of Raynes have their sights set firmly on the future. They signed a publishing deal with Sony Music a few years ago and have recorded multiple songs and a mini album. Raynes performed on the British television show “Walk the Line,” Simon Cowell’s newest show, right before Christmas 2021. “We got contacted by a casting director out of nowhere,” Mat explained. “We were named runner up for the night we were on; it was really fun to be performing on a big stage like that.”

The band looks forward to recording more music, performing, and hopefully going on tour in the future, but the pandemic has hindered their ability to get together with Mat in Arizona, Joe in North Dakota, and Mark in the UK. Despite the distance, they were able to put together an EP that they all recorded separately while in lockdown, which Mat produced.

You can find their music on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, YouTube, or anywhere else you stream music. Mat recommends you check out their song “Lemon Drop,” and Joe recommends “Collapse.”

Although neither Mat nor Joe were music majors at Mary, they see the value their education gives them each day as they work to grow their fanbase and write more music. “My marketing background comes in handy when it comes to the business part of the band and getting our name out there, which I think is pretty cool,” Joe said. Mat said he draws from the things he learned in theology and philosophy classes when he is writing music.

For Mat and Joe, the cherry on top is the people they impact with their music.

“We get a lot of messages from people to whom the songs we write really matter, whether it got them through a hard time or whatever it may be. It’s nice to know that it’s bigger than just hanging with your friends making music,” Mat said.

“There’s a feeling that you get when you’re creating music, and it’s indescribable,” Joe added. “I want other people to feel that feeling that we get. I want them to feel how we’re feeling when we’re creating it; that’s the best part.”

urt Snyder, ’91, ’06, had hit rock bottom. He had dropped out of college after just one year of failing every class. He had gone to college to wrestle — but his addiction had gotten the best of him. “My addiction really destroyed something I loved in my life … I loved wrestling, and I remember walking away from it feeling just tremendous regret.”

He was living in San Antonio, far away from his home state of North Dakota.

That’s when his brother-in-law reached out to help him find recovery. It was through

his brother-in-law’s encouragement that Kurt was able to start going to addiction counseling — counseling that eventually saved his life and helped him overcome his addiction. About a year after that, his brother-in-law died by suicide. “It was really devastating; he was like a brother to me,” Kurt said. “Here’s somebody that saved my life, and I really couldn’t do anything to help him at the time.”

Kurt decided to move back to North Dakota to help take care of his nephews. It was at one of their wrestling tournaments that Kurt ran into Milo Trusty, a legendary Marauders wrestling coach. “He came up to me and said, ‘I know you; I remember you. You were a good wrestler. Don’t you have some eligibility left?’ and I said ‘yes, but I was a bad apple.’ But he sparked something in me,” Kurt said.

After he died, Kurt knew he had two options. He could either fall back into his old ways or step up and fill the shoes of the man who had done so much for him.

Kurt wanted to go back to college to become an addiction counselor, but he needed to know if he could handle classes and assignments before Kurt even thought

about trying to wrestle again. So he took a semester at Minot State and got straight A’s.

“I sent Milo a heartfelt letter, saying I think I could be a good influence on the team, I have tremendous regrets, and I would just like an opportunity.” Milo gave him that chance, and at the age of 30, Kurt enrolled at Mary and joined the wrestling team. “My teammates called me ‘gramps,’” he joked.

At the end of the season, Milo could take 12 people to the national tournament — ten to compete and two alternates. To Kurt’s surprise, Milo chose to bring him as an alternate. “He said to me, ‘you’ve earned this.

You’ve given to me every bit of your efforts this year, and I respect that,’” Kurt recounted.

He went to nationals with the team, and another guy ended up getting hurt, so he got to wrestle. He lost his first match. “That night I called my counselor in San Antonio, and he told me to grab the Bible in my hotel room and look up 2 Timothy 1:7, which says ‘For God has not given you a spirit of cowardice, but of power and love and self-discipline.’ So I just said that over and over again,” Kurt remembered.

The next day, Kurt wrestled some of the best he had in his life and ended up winning seven matches in a row to get third place. “I had one

good day, and it was that day,” he said with a smile. “It was incredible.”

He didn’t wrestle the next year, but he helped coach the team as he completed his degree in addiction counseling.

“I felt like I was somebody who was thrown away at one time, but then I was given this community at the University of Mary that supported me in incredible ways. Mary gave me more than a chance to redo my college athletic career. I was successful; I was valued. I reclaimed my life,” Kurt said.

After graduating from Mary, he began his career as a licensed addiction counselor, most of it at Heartview Foundation in Bismarck. Eventually, the role of executive director opened, so he went back to Mary for his master’s in management.

Now he helps those struggling with addiction to find recovery like he did. Heartview Foundation is a nonprofit that provides treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

“People walk through our door, and they’re so broken. But everyone who works at our facility realizes: that’s somebody’s person; that’s somebody’s loved one. It’s Continued on page 10

He’d had a hard life, but Mary was a great community of support to help Kurt have a second chance. The discipline he learned on the wrestling team helped him practice discipline in other aspects of his life.

He didn’t have the best wrestling season — he was hurt all the time, and he didn’t have a winning record — but he showed up every day, he didn’t quit, and he didn’t use drugs or alcohol. “I showed up and did the best I could do one day at a time,” Kurt said.

quite the responsibility to be trusted with helping them through some of the toughest times of their lives,” Kurt said.

“But there’s nothing more powerful than to be a part of someone’s life from when they are hopeless and desperate with little reason to live to when they find hope again. It’s incredible to be a part of.”

During his twenty years at Heartview, their staff has grown from eight people to 125, yet the need for addiction counseling has grown even faster. “Between April of 2020 and April of 2021, 100,000 Americans died from an opioid overdose. That is more people than the city of Bismarck. That’s a fully loaded jumbo jet crashing every day with no survivors. That’s how many people are battling addiction,” he said.

Even though they continue to add more services, more staff, their waitlist never changes. “It’s disheartening that we can’t

get ahead of it at all,” he said. “But we’re trying. We have a job posting for an addiction counselor that we never take down. I’d interview and hire anybody that comes around for that. I could double our services if I had the staff.”

One new initiative he is excited about is a grant with the Bismarck Police Department and the Sanford ER that allows them to build a bridge to put their staff in the ER when people are brought in with a drug overdose.

Instead of just giving them Narcan and “throwing them on the street,” Heartview staff can help them find long-term treatment.

Bachelor of Science in

ADDICTION COUNSELING

The University of Mary’s addiction counseling program helps students understand addictive behaviors in society, so they can positively impact and drastically change the life of someone with addictive behaviors. Through their coursework, students learn about the dynamics of addiction while they develop the skills necessary to plan treatment and coordinate care for those they serve. In addition, our program integrates internship hours into the curriculum, which assists students as they seek licensure

after graduation. Students can tailor their degree to include a minor in addiction prevention, criminal justice, or psychology. A new program at the University of Mary, the bachelor’s in addiction counseling is offered in an online format, and can be completed in as few as 2.6 years, depending on transferred credits.

There are many initiatives and services Kurt would like to start if he had the staff. In order to do that, North Dakota needs more addiction counselors. “Job Service just testified on January 20, 2022, saying that in the next ten years we will need 147 new addiction counselors.

Right now, we only gain about ten a year.

That’s not enough. We need more people to choose this profession,” he said.

One way the University of Mary is helping address that shortage is through an online addiction counseling program, which Kurt is excited about. “We opened a location in Cando, ND, and part of making that successful is helping our staff there grow into those positions and go back to school. But in Cando, where do they go?” he said. “Online addiction counseling programs allow people in rural North Dakota get the education required to fill those needs.”

Kurt and his wife, Lisa, have two boys, Jack and Will. The boys don’t wrestle, but they both enjoy basketball.

Lisa is a pediatrician, and the couple believes strongly in giving back, especially to the University of Mary.

“I don’t know if I could give back enough to really make up for all that I was given,” Kurt said. “I was given so much, so to give back to Mary just makes sense.

You want to give back when you find a new lease on life. It’s just the right thing to do. Mary has been there for me at every turn. I’m so grateful.”

I

n 2014, the University of Mary embarked on “Vision 2030,” a comprehensive strategic planning initiative, unanimously approved by our Board of Trustees. We engaged all of Mary’s constituents to think and work alongside us — alumni, current students, faculty, administration, community members, parents, donors, and trustees, which gave rise to a new, robust strategic plan. We are humbled that we not only reached but surpassed our fundraising goal of $96 million for Phase I of Vision 2030.

It was a lofty goal, and thanks to thousands of generous donors, friends, alumni, and

others, in just over three years, our Phase I contributions reached an incredible $100,912,768! God has truly blessed the University of Mary!

The University of Mary intends to do nothing less than help transform the world by the transformation of lives. We celebrate the completion of Phase I and look forward eagerly to what Phase II will bring through its four pillars.

WELCOME CENTER

I

n the spirit of our Benedictine hospitality, the University of Mary plans to create a Welcome Center to greet visitors as they come to campus. The proposed Welcome Center addition on the east side of the Benedictine Center for Servant Leadership will be the beginning point of prospective students’ time on campus. As one of the first buildings you encounter upon arriving on campus, the Welcome Center serves as an introduction to the Mary community for prospective students and parents touring campus for the first time. First and foremost, the center will be meant to shower

he facilities envisioned in the Athletic and Master Landscaping Plan serve not merely the winning of championships but also the formation of character and the building of community. The desire for a new football stadium on campus includes plans for scholar-athlete academic support and additional classroom space for the entire university community. KEVIN FREBORG, ’87, retired from his 34year career in the federal government’s Inspector General community. For the past seven years, he served as finance operational manager for the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General.

Kevin currently resides in Eagan, MN. JESSICA GIBSON, ’03, and her husband own Rocky Mountain Shirtworks, LLC, in Laramie, WY. SHEENA HERRMANN, ’05, and her husband, Hagen, welcomed a daughter, Clara, in 2020. Sheena is a band teacher at Saskatoon Public Schools.

NATALIE (NAGLE), ’10, ’13, and Nick Jung were married on September 25, 2021, in Pierre, SD. Natalie works in public health and her husband is a certified registered nurse anesthetist.

CARRIE SCARR, ’10, is a writer, illustrator, and YouTuber. She writes about frugal living on her blog, and posts YouTube videos to @FrugalCarrie. She lives in Bozeman, Montana. She recently published her first book, “136 Frugal Ways to Save the Planet.”

SARAH (NELSON) KJOLHAUG, ’16, married Christopher on October 5, 2019. They are proud parents to Edison Lee, born September 15, 2020. The family lives in Duluth, MN, where Sarah is an occupational therapist.

PAIGE (RISING) SNYDER, ’18, works at St. Mary’s Central High School in Bismarck, ND. Paige and her husband Jordan welcomed their first child, a son, Ezra Paul, on January 9, 2021.

JOHN SHAKAL, ’18, and his wife Rachel have three children, Benedict (3), Avila (2), and Joseph (5 months). John served as a FOCUS missionary for three years and is now the director of outreach and evangelization in the city parishes of Chippewa Falls, WI. ALYSSA HAPPE, ’18, and her husband, Andy, had their second child, Grant Leo Happe, on November 4, 2021, joining big brother, Luke.

Alyssa was recently promoted to lead clinician at Primary Health Care in Des Moines, IA. LIZ, ’18, and SAM RAZINK, ’19, were married on August 29, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Parish in Mandan, ND after meeting five years earlier in the University of Mary’s Rome Program. Sam accepted a new job at Sylvan Learning of Bismarck in 2021. Liz works for Bobcat in Bismarck in the sourcing department.

KATHERINE (WILSON), ’18, married COLTON FORD, ’19, in the summer of 2019. After finding out they were pregnant with twins, Lucia and Damian, they moved to Washington to be closer to her family. They moved to Bismarck in November 2021 after giving birth to their third child, Zelie.

MARY (GORECKI), ’19, and her husband, JOSE JIMENEZ, ’19, were married in 2020 and are now both teachers. Mary works at Light of Christ Catholic Schools in Bismarck, ND. MIKAYLA (LINDQUIST) ANDERSON, ’21, moved to Shreveport, LA, after marrying Trevor Anderson on October 6, 2020. Trevor is an air traffic controller at Barksdale Air Force Base. Mikayla is employed at Revision Marketing Group as creative lead for graphic design and website development.

JENNIFER ILLICH, ’21, was promoted from the director of operations to the executive director of FirstLink. FirstLink answers the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, 211 phone lines, and contract agency phone lines for the entire state of North Dakota.

MELISSA (MILLIREN), ’21, and MICHAEL ANGSTEN, ’21, were married in 2021. Melissa accepted a new job as an operations administrator at BNC National Bank-East Main Bismarck.

JACQUELINE TONG, ’21, was promoted to accountant at the City of Irvine in California. She is married to Eddie Choi.
