W ELCOME !

The Engineering Quarterly is published four times each year by the Hamm School of Engineering at the University of Mary. In each issue, we try to include articles from each of the engineering majors that we offer on campus: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management. The intended audience of the Engineering Quarterly is engineers, engineering students, engineering alumni, future engineering students, and people working in fields related to engineering such as science, computing, and mathematics.

In this issue of EQ we showcase our graduating class of 2023, our engineering award winners, scholarship recipients, some of the projects and activities our students and faculty have been working on this semester, and even a chat session I had with ChatGPT! Enjoy!

D R . E RIC G ARCIA , P.E. Professor Eric Garcia, who is a Civil engineer and the chair of our Construction Management and Construction Engineering programs here in the Hamm School of Engineering became a Professional Engineer, licensed in the state of North Dakota this semester. This entailed several steps including passing the professional licensure exam.

Professional development is an important aspect of teaching at the University of Mary and we are very proud of Eric’s achievement. Additionally, one of the requirements for ABET accreditation is instruction of our students by licensed professional engineers.

O UTSTANDING S ENIOR N OMINEES

The Hamm School of Engineering had three nominees for the University of Mary’s Outstanding Senior Award. This year our nominees were Mara Dalton, David Ruiz, and John Nauertz.

Mara is an excellent student both academically and as a person. She is always active in the classroom, asking good questions, answering tough questions, and leading groups during project Mara Dalton work time.

Outside of the classroom, you can usually find Mara working with her fellow classmates on homework and projects, and she is very often leading the discussion and further helping her classmates understand the material at hand. Her rapport with her fellow students is excellent, as evidenced by participating in and winning the 2021 Hook Variety Show, and also being elected to the Homecoming Court in Fall 2022. She has an outstanding command of her engineering courses and the skill set that comes along with it, as evidenced by receiving the 2022 Outstanding Civil Engineering Student Award (as nominated by the faculty of the Hamm School of Engineering).

All of this, combined with the unique formation that UMary provides, means that she will be a leader in the engineering industry when she graduates.

As a person, Mara is of a high moral caliber. She has exemplified what it means to be a student at UMary. Academically, she is outstanding, but she is also deeply tied to the Catholic, Christian, and Benedictine values of the university. To start, she has been a member of the University Ministry for three years. Aside from attending regular meetings and general membership responsibilities, she has gone above and beyond in service to UMary and the students of UMary. To begin, Mara was part of a team that has taken care of the Marian Grotto. She has run the sound system for masses and vespers, has assisted in liturgies by being a lector or sacristan, and has sang for Exultate and Monday Morning Mission. In addition, she has volunteered to help run the freshman retreat each fall. Lastly, she organized and ran a Women’s Night Event in Spring 2022. She has also represented University Ministry at several activity fairs and booths, including multiple SOAR events. Overall, Mara has been incredibly active in service to the university and its students through University Ministry.

Ministry, Mara has been involved in many other extra curricular activities, most of which have direct ties to volunteering or service, or bringing joy or faith to others. First, she has actively been involved in FOCUS bible studies and women’s groups. She has attended the March for Life, SEEK conferences, and Koinonia retreats. She has also participated in Day of Service each year and was a site leader for the 2022 Day of Service.

David is an engaging student who has demonstrated ambition, pursuing a minor in math on top of an already full course load of a Major in David Ruiz Mechanical Engineering. He has always been one of the most active in the classroom, asking good questions, in a fashion that welcomes discussion with the instructor and fellow classmates.

He technical and academic capabilities are evident with his recent passing of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam as well as making the Dean’s list on several occasions.

Outside of the classroom, David is usually working with fellow classmates working on homework or projects, as well as providing guidance to underclassmen on courses he has already taken.

David has also been very active within the UMary community in various capacities. In athletics, he represented the University as a Hockey Student Athlete, becoming a ACHA D2 National Champion and Academic AllAmerican in 2021. Recreationally he also participates in UMary Ultimate Frisbee. In addition, he was the University of Mary Mascot for two years. Through music, he has been involved with Steel Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, and Jazz Band. David has also gone above and beyond regarding his service to the UMary community, being voted by his fellow Peer Leaders as the Outstanding Peer Leader, for excelling in his position during Welcome Week. During his time at UMary he has volunteered over 140 hours to engage and welcome students to campus with enthusiasm and excitement. Furthermore, he has also been a Site Leader on UMary’s Day of Service at the St Bernard Mission School. Through his involvement across the university, his rapport with members of the UMary community is excellent, as evidenced by being elected to the Homecoming Court in the Fall 2022.

He has been a role model for University’s Mission and Benedictine Values. David has represented the University of Mary Hamm School of Engineering beyond the university campus through his engineering internship experiences at Atlas Foundation Company,

Nutek Natural Foods, and most recently the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

John is an enthusiastic student. He is very active in class; answering tough questions, asking good questions, and leading groups during project work time; while keeping the mood lighthearted with several fun or sarcastic jokes peppered throughout discusJohn Nauertz sion. Outside of the classroom, you can usually find John working with his fellow classmates on homework and projects, and he is very often leading the discussion and further helping his classmates understand the material at hand, while also keeping their spirits up with good humor.

John has been very active with UMary intramurals, participating in flag football, coed basketball, co-ed volleyball, frisbee, and spikeball. This participation ultimately lead to him to work for UMary as Rec and Wellness Staff at the field house, where he helped to organize and run intramurals programs during his Junior and Senior years. In addition to his ties to intramural sports, John has also been involved with several other campus groups including Concert Choir for two semesters, Men’s Bible study since 2019, and a member of St. Joseph’s Men’s Hall during the 20202021 academic year.

John has served the University in several other capacities. As a freshman and sophomore, John was a tour guide for UMary and assisted in welcome week activities. He has participated in Day of Service each of the years he has been enrolled. John also served as the Student Government Ambassador for the School of Engineering from Spring 2021Spring 2022. His responsibilities in this role focused on student interaction and helping to make the engineering student’s experiences better by meeting with fellow students who had issues with the Engineering School and relaying those issues to Student Government for discussion. Finally, John is a member of the Knights of Columbus chapter at UMary.

In Spring 2021, he was elected as the Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus UMary College Council. During that period, he led the Knights membership to 500% of the goal.

He helped to organize, host, and run several events for UMary students.

The recipient of the Outstanding Student in Computer Science is Jenna Smith from Bismarck, North Dakota. Jenna is only in her sophomore year, but she has already shown that she is one of the finest students we have had in our program. She demonstrates a desire for deeper understanding of course concepts,

Additionally, she is a leader among her peers, cheerful and generous in helping others to understand course concepts. We are pleased that Jenna is part of our program.

This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Student in Mechanical Engineering Award is Cole Kitzenberg from Billings, Montana.

Cole is an outstanding student who pursues ambitious and creative design projects. Cole is a team player, has got a great disposition and actively seeks out opportunities to put his talents at the service of others. This was especially evident in his participation in the service trip to Peru in the Spring of 2022, where he built a chicken coop and adaptive devices and repaired a greenhouse and clinical equipment. Congratulations, Cole!

The recipient of the Outstanding Student in Civil Engineering Award is Paige Lang from Bismarck, North Dakota. In addition to her excellence in her coursework, her supervisors at her internships have given her nothing but glowing evaluations. Paige has been working as an intern for APEX Engineering Group for the past two years and plans to join them full-time when she graduates. Congratulations, Paige!

The recipient of the Outstanding Student in Electrical Engineering Award is Margaret Kuhar from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Maggie has not only excelled academically, but she has also been generous with her fellow students in her work as a peer tutor.

Maggie has accepted a position with Lockheed Martin that she will begin after graduating this spring. Congratulations, Maggie!

The recipient of the Outstanding Student in Construction Engineering and Construction Management Award is Benjamin Griep from Delano, Minnesota. Ben Griep will be the first student graduating the University of Mary with our new Construction Engineering degree. In addition to his excellent performance in the classroom, Ben has been part of the Knights of Columbus and for the past year he has worked at Titan Machinery. Congratulations, Ben!

S CHOLARSHIPS The winners of the North Dakota Society of Engineers Scholarships this year were Mechanical Engineering student Ariel Arriaga and Civil Engineering student Clare Pankratz.

The winner of the Dean’s Scholarship was freshman Computer Science student Tobias Callan.

2022 E NGINEERING G RADUATES From Buffalo, MN, Nathan decided to come to UMary because of the importance of faith, small class sizes and a more family-like feeling among the student Nathan DesMarais body. “When I was in high school, I was good at math and science so everyone would tell me that I would make a good engineer. I choose mechanical engineering because I was always interested in vehicles, ATVs, or anything with moving parts. I did a co-op with Bobcat during the spring and summer of 2022. I only did one internship and that was being part of the strategy team at Bobcat which dealt with big picture projects like future planning.

I like North Dakota a lot. The only downside I feel is the wind and I like that the professors are all social outside of class time saying ‘hi’ in the hallways or will take some time to talk to you if you run into them in town. Probably my favorite memory though was when I was a junior, I played in the student staff basketball game against Professor Garcia, and it was super fun to compete against someone that I was currently taking system dynamics with.

I did an internship every summer. I worked for a deep foundation contractor my first summer, a salt production plant my second, and the FBI in the Operations and Technology Division for my junior summer. The latest was definitely my favorite, I saw a lot of cool technology applications and learned about a few secret projects.

I think the people here are great, but it’s flat. So, so flat. I go skiing with my friends when I can and there’s not much good terrain for at least a six hour drive. My family is also back in Minnesota so I’d like to be a little closer to them, but I would be happy in Bismarck for a few years.

The engineering professors are all fantastic. On days when my classmates are hungry, I will bring them pocket cheesies (cheeseburgers) and sometimes offer one to the professor teaching the class if I have extras. It always gives them a kick and no one but Dayakar has tasted its glory. I hope to see this change before I graduate.

My future opportunities in Minnesota are ideal, since I can use the TS clearance from the FBI and get an immediate pay raise for having it for a government contractor.”

From Petoskey, Michigan, Gabriel decided to come to the University of Mary because it is a Catholic university that offers a 4-year engineering degree. “I decided to study engineering because I have Gabriel Brooks always been very interested in building things, especially different types of structures. Structural engineering has been my interest since I began my studies at the University of Mary and I have not altered my course since then. I’ll be graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering and I have taken some structural electives during my time here which have already proven very useful in my engineering endeavors.

I did an internship at OHM Advisors in Michigan last summer where I did a lot of construction inspection and supervision, and I learned a lot from that. Bismarck and North Dakota in general is a very unique place. I wasn’t sure what I thought when I first came here, but I have grown to love it, and it has become home.

My wife and I have decided to remain in Bismarck for the time being. I have been working in the structural engineering division at Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services (AE2S) part-time for a while now and I will begin working full-time as soon as I graduate.”

From Bismarck, Jonas chose UMary because it allowed him to continue his college career in engineering while staying in his home town. “I chose engineering because as a Jonas Mitzel kid I always liked to design different things and as I grew up I found myself always trying to come up with

solutions to problems in the world. I chose civil engineering because it involves infrastructure which is always going to have a high need.

I interned at Houston Engineering in Bismarck for three summers where I did surveying, AutoCad, and construction observations.

These taught me lots of valuable information that set me up to actually being hired by Houston following my 3rd summer with them. It was very beneficial for my career to get in the door early with this internship.”

I love Bismarck, ND. I was born and raised here. As someone who loves hunting and fishing, North Dakota offers many opportunities to experience some amazing outdoors adventures. I also loved my professors here at UMary. Right away it was rough adjusting to the certain schedule and different teaching styles, but I built great relationships with my teachers and they were always available to help with anything I needed. I have many fond memories of my professors here and will remember them for years to come. My plan for the future is to stay in Bismarck for a while as I have a great job lined up with Houston Engineering.”

I ended up in Civil Engineering because I was fascinated by structures and stability, and after my internship in land development realized that I really liked civil work. I interned for two summers at CORE Consultants, Inc. in Englewood, CO. I really enjoyed my time there because it is a great company with great people. They also really wanted me to get a lot out of the internship and learn so I was able to dabble in a lot of different things.

My view of Bismarck and North Dakota has changed a lot! I hated it freshman year because it was quite the change from Colorado, but I have learned to love the simple and slow pace of life in a smaller town and the people here are so nice! I really like how small the program is and that you get to know your professors. I also liked having adjunct professors for some variety and to learn from their areas of expertise.

From Maple Lake MN, Jackson decided to come to the University of Mary because of the large Catholic community. “I choose Mechanical Engineering because I have a Jackson Gallagher passion for CAD and the design process. While taking classes I had the great opportunity to work at Bobcat in their Design Engineer Co-op position. My favorite year at college was freshman year because of the community that I found and the personal growth that I was able to achieve.

From Spooner, Wisconsin, John decided to come to UMary because his Catholic faith is important to him.

“My older brother came here before me, and we have an old John Nauertz family friend who was a nursing student back in the day. I always enjoyed math, science, and logical reasoning and took an environmental science class in high school which I highly enjoyed that led me to being interested in civil engineering. I enjoyed my classes and stuck with it.

I did two internships during my college summers that were both located in Bismarck.

The first was for Houston Engineering as a surveying intern. The second was with Apex Engineering as a transportation intern. I particularly enjoyed the transportation internship because I got exposed to software used in the industry and learned a lot about the construction field.

I really enjoy the people of Bismarck and North Dakota as well as the summer and fall weather. The winter can be a bit rough with the frigid wind, but it’s a relatively small price to pay for great people and great views. I really enjoyed the vast majority of professors who taught me. They genuinely tried to make the class as personal as possible and I was comfortable talking with every one of them, which is something that cannot be said for other larger schools. In terms of a funny story, there was one time I went to Buffalo Wild Wings and I didn’t see Professor Waldenmaier there. Lol. I have accepted a job working for the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) as a transportation engineer. I’m really looking forward to getting into the work force full-time after spending the last 16 years of my life in education. I hope to one day obtain my PE for transportation and eventually

I am hopeful that after I finish school, I will be able get a job in Colorado at Lockheed Martin or Ball Aerospace.”

From Valparaiso, Indiana, Taylor came to the University of Mary because he wanted to go to a Catholic Engineering school that was affordable and away from the influPierre Miller ence of Chicago. “I chose electrical engineering because my dad works as a master electrician, so I have always been around electricity, and I have always found it very interesting. I worked the summer of 2021 with my dad as an electrician, which technically does not count as an internship but I learned a great deal of troubleshooting tactics during that summer that I otherwise would not have learned. I also had an internship at Stantec this last summer.

Aside from the extreme winters and wind, I love Bismarck. I have enjoyed the majority of my experiences with the engineering professors in my time here. One of my fondest memories was in Power Systems with Fr. A, which has been by far my favorite engineering class, where I found a homework question that was not assigned, but I thought it was interesting, and I brought it to class, and we spent the next roughly two class periods geeking out over the question, that was a turning point in my college career that really propelled me into the world of power systems engineering. For the future, I have a plan as an EIT Substation Designer at HDR based out of their Minneapolis Office.”

From Bismarck, ND, Parker came to UMary for wrestling and the start up of the engineering program. “My brother is an engineer and I really liked what the job entailed.

Parker Wahl I worked for Falkirk Coal Mine by Underwood, ND, for three summers and was a surveyor the first summer and an AutoCad Tech the second two summers. I really like ND and how its growing. I thought the professors were good specifically the Garcia brothers and not being able to tell them apart the first two years. I have job lined up at Lowry Engineering after I graduate and I am currently working as an intern there.”

From Bismarck, ND, Taylor decided to come to UMary when he was offered a scholarship to play football with the engineering program just starting up. “I decided on an engineering degree beTaylor Morrison cause I enjoy solving problems and creating things. And I chose civil engineering as I had originally wanted to go into environmental engineering, and I learned that environmental engineering was a subsection of civil so I moved to that degree. The next two summers I interned at Moore Engineering as an engineering intern/RPR. The Moore Engineering internships were my favorite as I learned the most about design and how the process of projects work.

Bismarck is my home and other then the never-ending winters, it’s the place I want to stay and eventually raise a family here. My professors have been amazing, while I was in football, they were very accommodating of my ever-changing schedules. They helped me out when I was struggling, and they also knew how to crack a joke to lighten the mood.

After graduation I plan on starting my career at Bartlett and West here in Bismarck as a water resources engineer.”

I took an internship with Resideo, a spinoff company of Honeywell Home, working as a power supply test engineer on their latest thermostat PCB. Currently, I am undertaking a Bobcat co-op in their manufacturing strategy team staging the layout for a future quad weld cell project at the acceleration center. Bobcat has been much more preferred to Resideo, although, a certain pandemic may have greatly contributed to this opinion.

Bismarck, ND, has been a pleasant place to live. It’s not terribly far away from where I grew up but just far away enough to where I am not dependent on parental control. Bismarck is my home and will be for some time.

I do intend to leave this city to settle down elsewhere with better job opportunities for my field of interest. The professors were great.

I loved all my professors, one funny story was in our Dynamics we had to build catapaults, and during testing if we were able to hit Dr. Garcia in the forehead with a raquetball at 10 yds we would get extra credit. We missed by a couple inches but another group hit and it was hilarious. Another funny story would be when we worked with Dr. Carrico to prank the other Dr. Garcia, we all swapped out our midterm tests and handed in random pieces of paper then walked out and gave our real test to Dr. Carrico. Dr. Garcia then sent us a scalding email talking about failing us all and that we were done for, and scared us all real good with that in revenge. Thankfully he didn’t fail us. I plan to get an Engineering job in North Dakota but dont have anything lined up yet.”

Upon first coming to North Dakota, a couple things surprised me. First, the cities are so far apart and there are so few cities. Secondly, I have never been in such a windy place as North Dakota. Bismarck is welcoming community, and everyone here are very kind. All the professors I’ve had for my courses were extremely helpful and supportive. They were always there when help was needed.

My plan for the future includes working for a civil engineering company that specializes in either foundations or structural engineering.

I was a seasonal project inspector for the State of North Dakota Public Service Commission, which was technically not an internship but was related to the engineering field. I would say my favorite was Titan Machinery because I was able to continue work into the school year.

I like Bismarck and I really enjoy North Dakota because of all the hunting and fishing there is to do here. I liked the professors.

They were always willing to answer questions and usually very understanding. I have no future plans yet as I am still trying to figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life. I have jobs lined up for the summer and next fall but nothing after that as of now.”

Environmental Engineering and Sustainability is becoming extremely important for engineering companies across the country and the world as regulatory bodies introduce sustainability and environmental regulations for civil engineering projects. This has lead to an increased demand for environmental engineers and the Hamm School of Engineering is responding to this demand. In 2020, the University of Mary made the decision to move the Computer Science department from the Gary Tharaldson School of Business to the Hamm School of Engineering.

Along with the move, we have also been realigning the curriculum itself to be more engineering centric.

The Computer Science graduating students are not only proficient education in different programming languages, but students also have a great education in mathematics, physics and engineering.

This year we added a new ethics class, ENR471-Engineering Ethics with Catholic Studies, to compliment the existing professional ethics course, ENR470-Engineering Ethics. ENR471 brings principles from the classical philosophic tradition and Catholic moral theology to bear on engineering ethics cases. ENR471 is cross-listed with Catholic Studies and is an elective for completion of a Catholic Studies major or minor.

In ENR471 students dive in to topics such as the parts of a moral act, conscience, the virtues, and Aquinas’ hierarchy of law as ways of understanding the ethical dimensions of contemporary engineering practice. In collaboration with the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery and the Theology Department, this class also incorporates the Benedictine values of the University of Mary and principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Thus ENR471 provides an opportunity to integrate broader formation at the University of Mary with professional practice.

The topic was Chapter 31 from the Rule of St. Benedict. The chapter describes the qualities and duties of the “Cellarer” in a monastery and the sisters wanted the students to discuss various aspects of that role and how the duties and personal attributes relate to their future careers as engineers and leaders.

The students were very engaged and their comments and insights were thoughtful and often profound. It is a great pleasure to hear the thoughts of these humble and deepthinking graduates who, only four years ago, were such completely different people. It is impossible not to be proud of the type of person who we are sending out into the world from this school. They will certainly have a positive effect on their coworkers and their communities.

The North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers (NDSPE) hosted a “Discover Engineering” Day at the Kirkwood Mall on Saturday, Feb 25, to introduce children to engineering-related topics and activities.

On Thursday, March 30, over 80 students, grades 6 through 12, from the area schools and home school organizations, converged on the University of Mary Hamm School of Engineering for our Emerging Engineers event.

We also had students that came from far enough away that they arrived last night in order to participate today.

Finally after cooling for several hours, the bronze casting is removed from the mold halves. The casting consists of multiple parts connected by the network of runners used to distribute the bronze to the individual cavities.

The Parts will have to be separated manually through machining.

This year we began a new tradition of having a spring alumni event in addition to the alumni event that we have in the fall.

The difference is that, in the spring event, we invite our current graduating class in addition to our alumni.

The plan is to induct our current graduates into to our ever expanding group of alumni and to allow them to meet, greet, and network with our past graduates. This will allow our new graduates to make some valuable contacts and hear some real world advice, as they enter the workforce, from the seasoned veterans.

One aspect of our engineering program that differs significantly from most schools across the country and the world is our freshman courses. As you probably already know, we issue each of our freshmen students a laptop running Ubuntu Linux when they start our program. The laptop is pre-installed with much of the software they will use throughout their degree and it is theirs to keep. They are introduced to the features of the laptop in their ENR 101 and ENR 200 courses in the Fall semester of their freshman year where they learn LATEX typesetting, Excel spreadsheets, CAD, and resumé building.

In the Spring semester of their freshman year they become much more familiar with the inner workings of their laptop and how to use it for computer aided measurement, data collection, networking, and command line computing in a Bash terminal. It is our contention that being adept at powerful modern computing methods will help them in both their education and their careers regardless of which branch of engineering they choose. Out of curiosity, I decided to question ChatGPT about the particular command line computing tools that we teach the students in this freshman course and find out if any other schools also use these methods. Here is a transcript of my chat session:
