THEORYVS FACT ByTERRYPILLING
“Thoughfaithisabovereason, therecanneverbeanyrealdiscrepancybetweenfaithandreason.SincethesameGodwhorevealsmysteriesandinfusesfaith
hasbestowedthelightofreason onthehumanmind,Godcannotdenyhimself,norcantruth evercontradicttruth.Consequently,methodicalresearchin allbranchesofknowledge,provideditiscarriedoutinatruly scientificmannerdoesandnot overridemorallaws,cannever conflictwiththefaith,because thethingsoftheworldandthe thingsoffaithderivefromthe sameGod.Thehumbleandperseveringinvestigatorofthesecretsofnatureisbeingled,as itwere,bythehandofGodin spiteofhimself,foritisGod,the conserverofallthings,whomade themwhattheyare.”
–CatechismoftheCatholicChurch
ThecatechismoftheCatholicChurchstates thatthereisnoconflictbetweenfaithandreason–theyaresimplydifferentpathstotruth. Similarly,thereisnoconflictbetweentheory andfact.Theyaremerelydifferentpathsto knowledge.A"fact"isknowledgederived fromdirectobservationwhilea"theory"is knowledgederivedfromapredictivescientific ormathematicalmodel.
Somethingthatbecomesveryclearwhen scientistsandengineersspeaktothegeneral publicisthatmanypeoplehaveafundamentalmisunderstandingofwhatwemeanbythe terms‘theory’and‘fact.’Thisseemstocome fromthecolloquialuseoftermsandsometimesleadstomuchconfusion.Ithoughtit mightbehelpfultoexplainwhattheseterms meantousasscientistsandengineers.
A fact issomethingwhichisdirectlyobserved.Inotherwords,somethingeveryone fromexperimentalscientiststochildren,to cats,canknow–sincetheyobserveitdirectly withtheirsensesorscientificmeasuringinstruments.Forexample,thestatement:“the bagofwasabialmondsfelltothefloorwhen mycatpushedit”isanobservedfact–both me,andthecat,sawithappenandcanagree thatthisisafact.
Ontheotherhand,a theory providesan explanationoffacts:itisthereasonwhythe almondsfell.Theoriesarebasedonfundamentalscientificprinciplesandcanbeusedto predictfutureeventsanddiscoverpreviously unknownfacts.Atheoryanswersthequestion “why?”.
Scienceistheartofcorrelatingandexplainingthefactsaroundus.Tomakesense outofthepatterns.Catsknowfactsbutonly humanscanappreciatethereasonsbehindthe facts–onlyhumanshavetheories.
Discoveringnewfactsisfunandexhilarating(watchachilddoingitandyou’llwish youwerethem),anddiscoveringthereason forthosefacts,thetheorybehindthem,is justasexhilarating.Factsarecorrelatedin ourmindsandpatternsamongthemarediscoveredwhichsometimessuggestadeeper, causal,relationshipbetweenthemor,inthe caseofatheory,acommonexplanationof them.Thereisnoconflictbetweentheoryand
fact.Theyaren’tthesamething.Oneisan observationandtheotherisanexplanation,a cause,areasonbehindthefacts.Itseemsthat theconfusionamongnon-scientistswhich conflatestheoryandfactresultsfromthecolloquialmisuseoftheterm“theory”whenone means“hypothesis”.
An hypothesis isanexplanationthathas notbeentestedenoughtobeshowntobeaccuratelypredictive.Itisaneducatedguess. Manyhypothesesarewronginthatafewsimpletestsshowthattheydon’twork:theremay bealogicalfallacysuchasmistakingcorrelationandcausation1,apredictionthatdoesn’t cometrue,oranewfactisobservedthat doesn’tfitwiththeexplanation.Forexample, Icouldhypothesizethatmypoorgradesare causedbytheprofessorbeinginabadmood andthenthenexttestIgetagoodgradeeven thoughtheprofessorisstillinabadmood. Myhypothesisfailed.Ontheotherhand,a veryfewhypothesesworkwellforalongtime afterrepeatedtestsandeventuallybecomeelevatedtothestatusoftheories.However,ifa factiseverdiscoveredthatisnotexplainedby ourcurrenttheory,thetheorymustbemodifiedorreplaced.Thisdoesn’tmeantheoriginaltheorywaswrong,itisstillpredictiveof manyfacts,itisjustincomplete.Newton’s theoryofgravitywasreplacedbyEinstein’s theoryofgravity,butbothstillexplainwhy myalmondsfelltothefloor.
Thetheoryofgravityiswellestablishedto thepointwherewenolongerhavetoperform theexperimenttobeconfidentintheresult. Whydoesn’tmycatgetthis?I’veexplained ittohimahundredtimesyethestillinsistson performingthesameexperimentrepeatedly withmybagofwasabialmonds.
